just go with Bitcoin. if you still want to get into Altcoin make sure you divide what percentage of each coin. of course, Bitcoin who gets the most part of the division.
but it would be better if you go with the small amount because of you new in this case, learn and go gradually.

I can probable that you can find out a coin 100% safe but many coins are 90% safe when you invest in it like: bitcoin and ethereum. With bitcoin and ethereum you just need to hold in the short time to see good result. But with other coins then It depend on coin which you want to invest, your investing strategy and your analysis, any coin you have to wait 5 - 6 months even 1-2 years but any coins you only need 1 -2 week.
Litecoin is a good coin which is in top 10 coins you should own. I think Litecoin will soon reach $1000 in next year 2018.

Actually if you want to invest  $12000  in long term then i will recommend you that please invest in bitcoin or hold it for long term. I think bitcoin is the king of digital currency and bitcoin's future will be awesome. If you ask me how safe it is? Then i will say noting is 100% safe in online and nothing is permanent here. That's a really really big money you want to invest. I suggest that you invest in bitcoin and ethereum for 2-3 years, it will surely give you a nice profit afterwards. But be in mind that only invest on what you can afford to lose.
