I will go for ripple if you intend for a long term like waiting for more than  year. Ripple would be the best choice for this. I don't expect all will agree though but when you think of the future of the coin and its usage in the financial institution, its ripple that will be used as its proven to be better than swift already. i would suggest you to invest half ot the money onto bitcoin and 3k into monero or other proven altcoins. ANother 3k i would invest into some decent icos which have an promising future

$12000 is a big amount to invest but I would suggest you to invest 2000$ each in six coins so that your investment will be diversified. First of all do yourself some research of top 50 coins from coinmarketcap list then decide what is best for you. I have some good coins list you can check. You can consider  DeepOnion, Bitcoin, Waves, Stratis and Xmr. There is always risk in any investment. Invest that you can afford to loose.

As you have little to no knowledge about cryptos I wouldn't suggest you going in to ICO investents as finding the right ICO that isn'T scam nowadays is really hard. Especially for a beginner. Stick with the gold & fuel; bitcoin and Ethereum. These are the only 2 that can be guaranteed to not lose you money.
