My group just had a discussion on a contingency plan due to the introduction of Baikal N and impact on difficulty/profitability in coming weeks once these miners hit the streets. Baikal confirmed to one of our members that shipping starts in 1 week.
We predict a bloodbath in the cryptonite world - similar to what happened in LBRY, SIA, BlakeXXXX, Skein coins because of A3s, Baikal B's and X10s.
Monero will try to resist by forking but Baikals are FPGAs and can be upgraded (unlike hardcoded ASICs, that probably explains why Bitmain is not even in play for a XMR ASICs).
While the group will likely invest in "a batch" of Baikal Ns, we have decided to upgrade our power infrastructure in the GPU farms and go all out on ETH (both AMD and NVIDIA farms), assuming that Dagger coins will still remain profitable (and Casper is still a year away). This is like going back to our mining strategy circa 2016.
Also, to continue expanding the SHA256 and L3+ farms as 1st priroty... and halt ALL GPU projects for now until the battleground settles...
Given... still a strong BTC value beyond 2018, its important to remember that accumulation of BTC is still the main objective of long term mining, regardless of what alts/coins that we mine.
In these turbulent times... I want to quote Phil's analogy "... As I see Bitcoin as the super highway and alt coins as taxis and trucks needed to move transactions..."
Good luck and great mining to everyone.
The only way to properly "resist" would be to fundamentally change algo and pick something like x16r which constantly changes. I can only hope for Monero that they always had the option to easily switch to MoneroV as emergency procedure... But to be properly asic resistant they'd need a more fundamental change. I like your approach though. Re-trench, focus, hodl! Can they increase the memory usage requirement faster so that only big memory card can run. That will increase the cost of FPGA or ASIC miners.

Phill i have a question for you,i follow your threads and most of the time you say that you either point your rigs towards nicehash or you mine zec but dont see you mentioning mining other coins that bring more profit like signatum bitcore and raven durring that period. So i was wondering is there some special reason behind that like you think zec will be huge or you just dont love shitcoins Work to change coins and holding the coins is a bit too much. I have mined other coins and I hold a bit. But frankly I do a lot of stuff that consumes time. Most all my holdings are in btc. and at this time I am more in cash then other coins.

We will probably try to go riser free for any future additions or upgrades, but having the USB ports does eliminate one possible point of failure with the current riser setup, so this does have some appeal just for that (a + for high capacity too).

Love it. Just love it. I should have more XMR than I do... Go buy some! There's about 2 dozen projects I want at the moment.. Monero team will change POW algo at every fork to fight ASICs https://getmonero.org/2018/02/11/PoW-change-and-key-reuse.html"...Patches will be available for the following software: zone117x's pool, Snipa's pool, Lucas Jones' CPU miner, wolf0's CPU miner, ccminer-cryptonight, sgminer-gm, xmr-stak, xmrig-nvidia, wolf-xmr-miner...."

I agree with this strategy, our fam is at 11ghs eth and 450ghs blake b2 dual mining verge mostly rx cards , were not buying any more hardware, i think the strat now is to accumulate low priced coins and wait a few months for the landscape to settle. we are working on improving cooling, 20k btu lowe power split ac systems for around $2399 each , that way we can dual mine all summer and hold a ton of verge, dgb and sia with our A3s its a bad time to expand even gpu operations since no one knows if supply will even out when the next gen nvidia cards come out in April. Infrastructure investments always pan out mo matter what i have found its a good call

Seems odd that Baikal would release a FPGA miner at this point, everything else they have done to date was ASIC.

Yeah but maybe they want to chase the forks with firmware updates as FPGA can be programed fairly easily . This would prove interesting game to see how many forks kill the miner or does the miner hunt done and kill the coin. Also I have 3 simple mining accounts 20 rigs among them directed to 4 nicehash addresses. there is no freaking way I can track all of that unless I do 1 coin. the addresses are for multiple people I have deals with. I have many deals that the other person pays power and gets ½ the coins I provide the gear. it works for both people even with a 1080ti paying only 2 bucks a day. 2 in a rig = 4 bucks x 30 = 120 that is 60 usd each every month. the owner me paid for a rig . the power guy pays about 10kwatts a day or 300 kwatts a month here in NJ it is 30 in the winter and about 50 in the summer so 7 months of 30 = 210 + 5 months of 50 = 250 power total is 460 but earning 60 x 12 = 720 so pay 460 in power and earn 720 in coin for the host. me Pay 2k for the rig and earn 720 each year seems like a bad deal for me but with sales of rigs and timing upgrades I make out. As the 2k gets spent 1 time and gear rotates with sale of it. so 2 k can earn me 720 for 4 or 5 years. and many days 1080ti's earned 6, 7, 8 ,9 even 10 dollars which really make good money for me and the host.

Seems odd that Baikal would release a FPGA miner at this point, everything else they have done to date was ASIC. I think their earlier models were already FPGAs - I recall flashing older Minis to add algos and profit-switching using the supplied serial cable. I have a few Minis with old v1.1 firmware version that only mine X11 when I got them (end-2016?) and after flashing them, they can mine X11, X13, X14, X15, Qubit, Quark algos, just like subsequent models like Quads and A900, A2000. The Giant series started the inclusion of the other funky algos we know today. I rather get Baikals due to the multi-algo features VS Bitmain's ASIC single-algo miner = value for money. FPGA is a good differentiator for Baikals - Baikal should stick to FPGA miners since they got well-known because of that. The older Minis, Quads and A900s are still hard at work mining X13 - they consume very little power and we just left it alone doing its thing at one corner of the warehouse. The Baikals have good quality parts and build and I have no issues getting help from tech support if needed. They even sent me spare Pi controllers, cables, etc.

I have a lot of accounts like this: It is 1 omen gamer pc with 11 months on warranty paid for with sales of some 1070tis. So even though it was 2325 - 195 in coupons net 2130 that 2130 is rolled back from the 1070ti sales. So it is roi already. and it now earns 122 a month 61 for me and 30 for host after he pays for power. This business model works and is why I can sell gear on this site at really good prices over and over and over and over again. As I am in sales as much as I am in mining. Or maybe more in sales then mining Except for Nov 2017 and Dec 2017 where mining profits were huge

I may be shifting to sha-256 once I get some dragonmints and maybe avalon 841s you must be enjoying now the advantage of having solar power hehe..... that's the way to go..

Do note that all of the algorithms the "mini" was ever able to mine are PART OF the X15 algorithm (all of the X-series algos "include" a specified number of different algos used in series in a specific order on the datastream - and the "higher number" ones are the same as the earlier ones with certain algos added). Ditto the "mini" derived models like the Quads and the A900 and A2000. I've always thought, based on relative hashrates for some of the algos, that they used an ASIC but allowed the controller access to "input" and "output" taps at the borders of each X15 component algo (or at least the ones that were used independently).

Thanks Phil, With summer heat coming and uncertainity about future mining, I think I will get rid of some GPUs as some people with better facilities than me seems still able to expand, considering current unavailabilities! In Europe, you cannot find a brand new RX570 under $400 currently, and you have to be lucky. And used ones are at the same price. You US guys can actually get better deals with Ebay than us!
