BitShares PTS (formerly ProtoShares)

ProtoShares uses a new Momentum Proof of Work (POW) algorithm that is designed to be GPU and ASIC resistant.
http://invictus-innovations.com/s/MomentumProofOfWork.pdf

There's a $5000 bounty for anyone who can prove it is vulnerable to GPUs or ASICs.

As well as being an altcoin, ProtoShares is a way to own BitShares before they are launched. When BitShares is launched, its genesis block will award one BitShare for every ProtoShare held.

The client should connect to the network automatically but if you have trouble connecting, try opening the debug window console and type these commands,

addnode 162.243.54.126 add
addnode 37.139.29.236 add
addnode 64.90.183.137 add

Mining

In the Settings menu, you can choose to mine 1, 2, or 3 processes.

You can also use the debug console to start mining.

setgenerate true 1
setgenerate true 2
setgenerate true 3

After 4 or 5 minutes of mining, you can type 'getmininginfo' to see the hashespermin rate.

Note there is a 3 process maximum because of memory limitations on the win32 client. You can run a second or third instance of the program if you want to try running more processes.

FAQ
Q: I've set mining to start but my hashespermin shows 0, why?
You'll need to wait 4 or 5 minutes before that figure shows something meaningful. In the meantime, you can check on your CPU/Memory usage - these should be higher than usual if you're mining.

Q:Why is my win32 client crashing?
This happens because too much memory is allocated. If you type 'set generate' or 'set generate -1', this is likely to run too many threads, try to allocate too much memory, and crash. Use the settings menu to start mining or type 'set generate 3' - where 3 is the maximum. To run more threads, you need to start another instance of the client.

Q:How do I start another instance of the client?
You need to use a different port and data directory, here's a sample command line -
protoshares-qt.exe -port=5672 -datadir=C:\dataalt2

Q:Why would I want to be involved in another one of your coins after the MemoryCoin debacle?
This isn't my coin, I was just contracted to get it up and running with a basic client. As far as any altcoin has an 'owner' - that would be Invictus Innovations, who have bigger plans for it. This whole thread is an unofficial information thread to distribute and gather information about ProtoShares launch and mining.

Please keep discussions on-topic. Off-topic and inflammatory posts will be removed.

If you have problems with ProtoShares network discovery add node cryptoseed.cloudapp.net to params of the wallet, example:
Code:
protoshares-qt.exe -addnode=cryptoseed.cloudapp.net
or to protoshares.conf, example:

Code:
addnode=cryptoseed.cloudapp.net

For everybody behind crazy firewalls use:
Code:
protoshares-qt.exe -connect=cryptoseed.cloudapp.net:80

Edit: cryptoseed.cloudapp.net it's an DNS name for old 168.63.12.227 node.

Yes - someone hopped in and started mining while we were doing last minute testing so Invictus has declared it started.

Warning to all: Max limit is 3! Do NOT attempt to set it higher!

Mine crashed with three error dialogs at once when I tried setgenerate true 4...

Seems like I found a block!

Someone want to post a good node IP. Mac clients haven't found the network yet.

What's a decent hashespermin? I'm seeing like 10 which seems awfully low.

This is true on the win32 client - more than 3 and it tries to allocate more memory than possible and crashes. Shouldn't be an issue a 64bit client. With the 32bit client, you can run multiple instances and set each to 3 processes. Gains probably won't be linear though.

What's a decent hashespermin? I'm seeing like 10 which seems awfully low.

On an i7 3770, 8GB RAM
With one instance running(3 processes), I'm seeing 13 h/m
With two instances running(3 processes), I'm seeing 9 on each, for a total of 18 h/m

I reckon about 1 every two seconds, and with a more efficient implementation, I reckon that could be improved to 1 per second.

how to run multiple instances on windows?

You just need to specify a different port and datadir - here's the command line,

protoshares-qt.exe -port=5678 -datadir=C:\dataalt
