I think you just might need a little patience 

Hover over the little icon in the bottom right, it will show you the block count or how far behind it is. Unless it gets stuck at a block, it is still synchronizing.

What do you see when you open the wallet and go to help -> debug window -> console -> type getblockcount and hit enter?

Current block should be 172,866

Since the Emercoin Team publishes technical articles into Russian, there is no person translating these into English, so the DAO Hacker Scandal made many people lost their money, after this event people have remembered this article, but it was too late!

Yes, I hope so. It would be great to see EMC on Polo. I know from my own experience with NAV that exchange admins can be hard to deal with some times.

Jason's response pretty much sums up the Poloniex situation. This is not something the Emercoin team is actively pursuing. However if community members are interested in seeing EMC there, feel free to promote it and see what you can do.

There are several exchanges Emercoin is traded on and I don't believe the absence of an EMC/BTC market there is a restricting factor for growth.
