Get Donator status by donating 10 BTC

A number of years back, when BTC was still around $200.00, I signed up to this forum and it never would allow me to access it. Instead, everytime I tried to log on it would say some garbage about "You have been guilty of (something or other) and must pay the satoshi gods xxxx amount of satoshi".  

It wasn't much and I thought maybe someone one the same IP range as me had done something to deserve this so I paid - nothing. Still everytime I would come and try to login same thing. I would pay again and still same thing. I finally quit trying.

That was back in February 06, 2015 when I registered. It wasn't until the past month that I came back and tried to login and it actually allowed me.

Anyone know just WTF was going on back then?

Afaik It is a fees that you should pay because you have an "evil ip" (or a word similar to this)
It is related to the domain ip range that you create your account with.
I will give you an example : one of your family member or a neighbour with a quite similar ip joined the forums and got banned. Your ip will get evil points, so once you create an account, you cannot use the forums until you pay that fees.
Now for your situation, may I say that you paid the amount and you didn't wait until the transaction gets confirmed?

Well that is what I initially thought back then as well. So, of-course I tried changing my IP many times (successfully) and it still said that to me. So I thought it to be strange to block an entire 'B' block (if I got that right - about 65k or so) just because of one person.

I am fairly certain that wasn't the case either. Back then it seemed as though a BTC transfer was a whole lot quicker (and I know a hell of a lot cheaper) than they are today, maybe because there was not nearly as many trying to go through. Regardless, I tried, gave it about a week or more, pissed off whenever I would go to Google something and it would direct me here, where I knew I couldn't log in. I would eventually return and try again but same thing. Finally I gave up and never clicked on a Google result that had BitCoinTalk as the result.

Now, after more than two years I finally decided to click on one of the links and try to log in (still had my name and password stored in Chrome) and just like that ... I was no longer evil.

Can someone list more details on advantage of donating ?  There must be a reason why people donated 50 BTC.... Whats the value add ?

No adjustment needed, it has been discussed that it's fixed rate and will never be changed. It's also unfair to those members that paid the same price before but their advantage is bitcoin isn't that expensive way back then. But it has been decided that no change in the pricing.

In that case no-one in their right mind would donate enough to have a donor status

Well years ago if somebody donated 10 bitcoins at $1 each and in return received donor status for a total of $10 it seems fine.

In todays day and age nobody will donate 10 bitcoins at $12,000 each and in return receive donor status for a total of $120,000.

Yes we can't do anything with it anymore, the decision is final and before the forum is being supported through donation's but now it has ad slot so whether no one will donate the forum will continue.

I clarified. It's 10btc. What's not to understand? The price was 10 bitcoins back in the day and won't be changed due to it being unfair to those who donated at the time.

I think getting donor status is not on anyones mind any more. Just not worth it and nothing to gain.

Users wish to have a donor status down to their profile, but what they need to spend makes them leave of its own. We can't say it is not worth it and nothing to gain, because among the entire list of users in the forum if you go through the list of donors it is very small in count. Being one among them will probably get you priority in forum related activities. We might be not aware about those.

The donation amount was not 10 dollars but 10 bitcoins. The price was in bitcoins so that's what people paid. We can argue all day long about how fair/unfair it is or whether donators will be annoyed if it was changed but it's irrelevant as theymos has said he won't lower the price. It would be much simpler to just create additional Silver and Gold membership levels instead with additional perks and fix the value in fiat and then they would become the new vip/donator ranks and no one can complain then.

Yes that would be far better idea. The list is too long and outdated. Having 'Donor' next to the avatar is good.

If anything, something like today's equivalent to 1 month of hosting would be an appropriate amount of money to be considered a donator.

Not sure this is a good idea... A lot of account farmer here are ready to pay for ranking increase for earn by lucrative signature campaign or for build up some kind of scam. Better if things remain same as now.

it makes sense only if "donator" is no longer seen really as "donator" but "old user" or "bitcoin pioneer"
it differentiate users who were here soon enough so that 10 btc were worth 1 month of hosting

that makes sense. and even that would be much more (in fiat) now that it was before as I'm sure the forum is bigger now and needs a much bigger server
