I don't understand this question.

You can't plug USB 3.0 cables into USB 2.0 ports, if you meant that.

I don't understand this question.

You can't plug USB 3.0 cables into USB 2.0 ports, if you meant that.

Why not? Is not USB 3 still using the standard Type A connectors? The techs are listed as cross compatible. The only catch is that usb type b 'plugs', i.e.,usb 3 mini b and usb 3 micro b will not fit into usb 2 micro and mini b receptacles.

His question though seems to be about his USB 3 ports 'edit' on the pc side not picking up the device.

A partial answer;
The port should not matter as USB 3 is backwards compatible with USB 2 devices. But, if you have a USB 2 port, try plugging it into there and see if the computer reconizes it then. What OS are you running?

If you're not excited by the idea of being an early adopter 'now', then you should come back in three or four years and either tell us "Told you it'd never work!" or join what should, by then, be a much more stable and easier-to-use system.

That is what I meant. USB 3.0 cables does not fit into the mini USB 2.0 type B connectors of the FPGA boards.

aye, i get what you are saying. my wording was a bit off too.
From what we know his OS should not detect the device any differently on either port on the pc side right?

Yes. In order to connect the FPGA board to an USB 3.0 host (A type connector) an USB 2.0 cable has to be used.

A new software release has been published (release 120126, download from http://www.ztex.de/btcminer). New features are:

  • Faster Bitstreams
  • Stale reduction by long polling and block monitoring (works also if the cluster is connected to local Bitcoin server only)
  • 60% faster FPGA configuration on USB-FPGA Modules 1.15x
  • Frequency scaling steps reduced from 8Mhz to 6MHz. This allows better frequency optimization.

In order to avoid compatibility problems the new 6Mhz firmware (which also defines the bitstream) is named ''ztex_ufm1_15d2.ihx''.

Clusters can be updated by the command

Code:
java -cp ZtexBTCMiner-120126.jar BTCMiner -m p -pt ztex_ufm1_15d1 -f ztex_ufm1_15d2.ihx

In single board mode only the parameter "-f"' has to be changed.

See http://www.ztex.de/btcminer for details.

For backward compatibility the package still contains "ztex_ufm1_15d1.ihx" 8MHz firmware (and bitstream).

In a few cases the 8Mhz bitstream is faster than the 6Mhz bitstream, e.g. if the board achieves 208 MHz but not 210 MHz. But on average the 6MHz firmware is a little bit faster because it allows better frequency optimization.

The old 8MHz firmware/bitstream will be removed in future versions.

I couldn't run the boards at the USB3.0 port. Got an error when i tried to upload the firmware. 2.0 works fine. Anyway, i connected them to my home PC. The other problem i ran into was the placement of the heatsinks (1.15d). One unit is acting very strange. While the other one runs stable @ 200 MHz (max error rate 0.82) the other board clocks itself down to zero.  Huh I remounted the heatsink about 20 times. Can this be a cooling problem ? It also gets pretty hot compared to the other heatsink  Undecided

Spent more than six hours to connect two boards... sometimes life fucks you pretty bad. At least one is running

Edit: Thanks for the new version ! Works great.

Which error message? Which OS? It is probably an OS/driver issue since USB 3.0 should be downward compatible.

The other problem i ran into was the placement of the heatsinks (1.15d).

See http://www.ztex.de/usb-fpga-1/usb-fpga-1.15.e.html#hs for mounting instructions.

Usually this is caused if the PSU is to weak or not fast enough. Please send me the logs / output per email. (Also the USB 3.0 errors).

Possible. Avoid unmountig. What kind of pads do you use? (I only shipped two of them)

Quote

Hot compared to the 1.15x FPGA board or hot compared to the heat sink of the other 1.15d FPGA board? In the latter case this indicates a problem.

I warned you that cooling the 1.15d boards is more difficult.

Thank you for your time. USB issue is solved with the other computer. I ended up gluing down the heatsinks with cementit. Works very well for the working unit but it has something... let's say "final" in it. I have to check the psu tomorrow. I'm not saying this is your fault, just try to find a solution. A 120mm fan should be good enough for two boards. I run Win 7 btw

Both heatsink have been mounted with the same glue. One is working at 204 MHz the other has 100% error rate at 6 MHz. I fear that fpga is dead. Must have been a monday chip  Cheesy

Why you did'nt use the adhesive pads delivered with the boards. They have an Aluminum carrier.

Try out the "ztex_ufm1_15d1" firmware of the new release.

I'm sure it is no Monday chip. All FPGA boards are tested and AFAIR the FPGA boards you got have even been tested with the BTCMiner. Give me the last 3 digits of the serial number (you see it if you start the FPGA board in single mode with no firmware in EEPROM or with closed jumper). I will complete the number (as proof that it has been tested) and tell you which BTCMiner ran on this board.

I did use the pads first but i ran into the same problems. 1.15d1 won't help. I also think that this i not a thermal problem. I tried it with everything possible. 6 MHz at 100% error rate that's a joke. Even with an improper heatsink the board should do 100 MHz and that heatsink fits perfect, it's flat and down on the chip.

At least it does something  Grin

I did use the pads first but i ran into the same problems. 1.15d1 won't help. I also think that this i not a thermal problem. I tried it with everything possible. 6 MHz at 100% error rate that's a joke. Even with an improper heatsink the board should do 100 MHz and that heatsink fits perfect, it's flat and down on the chip.

I'm quite sure that I tested you boards with some BTCMiner version. I asked you for the serial number in order to verify that.

There a a few possible reasons:
  • The FPGA has been damaged by overheating (I warned you that these devices are more diffucult to cool)
  • Something with the power supply is not correct. Switch the Experimental boards and try out another power supply. Make sure that I send you Experimental Boards 1.3 (1.2 are to weak).
  • Almost impossible: The bitstream does not work on your FPGA for some reason. This can be excluded by sending me the serial number.

FPGA damage is the most realistic thing in my eyes. The rest is working. I did not run them without heatsink but sometimes shit happens... who knows. That's life. Another lesson learned. I play around with older miner versions. Perhaps something helps.

Check the things about the power supply as I wrote: Swap the Experimental boards and try out another power supply. Make sure that I send you Experimental Boards 1.3 (If I accidentally delivered a 1.2 board this explains it.)

If you try out older versions you will run into some trouble because old BTCMiner versions does not accept the new Firmware you installed in EEPROM.

Easiest method: Power-on with closed jumper and try it out in single board mode, see http://www.ztex.de/btcminer/

If you want to install old firmware: Power on with closed jumper, remove jumper and install the Firmware using the old BTCMiner version.

Red n white corner throws the towel !  Cry

Edit: It was a thermal problem ! In an act of frustration, i took some weight from my dumbells and put them ontop of the heatsink. All or nothing ! At 5 Kg it stopped at 168 MHz with 7 Kg it mines at 210 MH/s. Sick shit  Grin

A testing release of BTCMiner has been published: http://www.ztex.de/btcminer/ZtexBTCMiner-120130.jar .

The bitstream is a bit faster again and should achieve 210 MH/s on average.

The package contains 3 firmwares for LX150 FPGA Boards:

firmware filefrequncy step    note
ztex_ufm1_15d1.ihx8 Mhzstable
ztex_ufm1_15d3.ihx6 Mhzexperimental
ztex_ufm1_15d3a.ihx  4 Mhzexperimental

(In order to avoid conflicts with old bitstreams the new 4/6 MHz firmware has been named ...d3)

I am happy to report that the 15d3a bitstream works for me now. I didn't try the 15d3 bitstream.
The 15d3a starts at 200 MHz, then goes up to 204, then 208, then 212 (error rate > 1%), then back to 208 (error rate < 0.1%), seems to stay at 208 now.

Cool! Thanks!

Note that this is NOT with the Xilence cooler, but with a 12 mm high VGA cooler from China via eBay for $2.79 (including shipping). Yes, it does have a fan.
It gets warmer than the Xilince cooler, but I can still touch it and leave my fingers on it without feeling pain. Like a warm coffee mug.
