Just a word of caution, I woke up to 1 dead R9-290 this morning after mining scrypt-jane, the card was only 1 week old.

It may just be coincidence but If you look back through this thread a few people using the same card have noticed problems afterwards.

I've managed to take mine back and have traded them both for 2 r9 290x's now.

If they show up "DEAD" it doesnt actually mean that your card is broken, you know that right?
Means it has been unable to function, so CGMiner stops trying and calls it DEAD.
Mostly it's because of insufficient power, but there are some other reasons for it...
Try lowering the intensity a little bit, or if u have underclocked your GPU add like 0.010 VDDC to it.

Anyways if ur card shows up DEAD, just restart your PC and start mining again

No the card was dead as in not working anymore will get thrown in the bin. I tested it and the place where I bought it from tested it when I took it back.

My PC wouldn't power up with the card in it's slot and power is not a problem I have a 1000w seasonic and 2 cards only pull around 630w full system.

I had an XFX r9 290 that I had in for about 3 days in December and I tried mining TIX (another scrypt-jane).  It failed and reset my system everytime the driver loaded from then out.  How to RMA it.  Just curious what brand you had this happen with?

It may just be a coincidence, as it wasn't running more than 2 days before it failed.  It's replacement has been running for about 2 weeks on normal scrypt without a hickup and 24 hours on scrypt-jane just fine.

It was the Gigabyte Radeon with the 3 fans on the front.

It seems strange that mining a different type of scrypt would cause any problems but I know of at least 2 people in this thread that have had issues with their R9 290's

It obviously has an effect of some sort which is why people are all getting 20%-40% less hashing speeds than they normally would.

I just took mine back to the local pc shop they tested it and took it back no questions asked thankfully.

seems a little low, but not that low.  I would have expected it to be closer to 15.

I also get about 200Khash lower with my Sapphire 290.  I thought this was just the was the was "jane" worked on all cards.  Are the 290's the only ones that are slower with this scrypt?

No I think all cards are slower it is just that a couple of people have reported problems with the cards afterwards with R9 290's
