The argument for DRK being a scam is the instamine argument. Because the formula that specifies the block reward is a function of the difficulty (the higher the diff, the lower the reward), and the difficulty being low in the beginning, a large amount of coins were mined within the first day or two before the difficulty caught up with the hashrate. It was an unfortunate incident as the instamine accusations have been following DRK since then. The developer (eduffield) even suggested and started a poll whether an "airdrop" should be issued that would disperse 2 million coins to everyone in order to dilute the effect of the first days' mining. This imo shows that the instamine was not intentional by the devs. The community didn't think such an airdrop would make any sense as the instamined coins were already long gone and distributed in the first months when the coin's value was very low. Can't say everyone who mined in the beginning sold though, as there were a lot of people mining. The airdrop idea was then soon abandoned. And funny enough, no one gave a shit about any instamine when the value was low, everyone could've bought a large amount very cheap. The crying started only after the price started to rise and people thought they missed the train. Here is a post about The Birth of Darkcoin by the dev. It was January 18, 2014 and I had everything ready or so I thought. I announced the launch of Darkcoin (XCoin at the time) on BitcoinTalk. We launched later and immediately got stuck on block 42, I was new to the Bitcoin codebase and wasn’t sure what I missed so I announced we’d relaunch later. When we relaunched we had a rush of miners join causing a huge spike of coin production without it being able to adjust the difficulty quick enough, we just ended up spilling out coins. Retargeting happened every 576 blocks and could only increase the difficulty by four times, so it took about six retargets to get to a difficulty that was near 2.5 minutes per block. Later on, after the difficulty evened out we realized that there was a serious problem with the block reward calculation. You can see people discussing the problems here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=421615.120I soon fixed this issue at block 4500, but none of us realized the amount of coins that had been issued at the time. At that point we didn’t even have a block explorer yet. BUMP~! Bitcoin has about TWO years "instamine" before known by the public. Bullshit - news about the coin's launch was spread, people just weren't interested until later. There's a difference between that and a coin being launched with hash ready to be immediately pointed at it, scooping up loads of high value blocks, before changing the block reward so subsequent miners don't get anywhere near that amount. Nowadays, hash is ready to be pointed at any new coin, and LOTS of it - you can't compare Bitcoin's launch to this. These days (since late 2013) people are F5'ing the ANN section with their miners ready to start mining early any coin just in case, that's what happened with DRK as well. And just like with Bitcoin, some people weren't interested until later. There were at least 100x if not 1000x more people mining DRK in the beginning than there were for Bitcoin, so in that sense, you can't compare their launches. |

DRK is based on Bitcoin which is a whole different game than finding fundamental issues on cryptonote. The coin as a coin will never have an issue unless Bitcoin's code is found to be problematic. The anonymity "module" can have bugs or holes, but these are fixable - and such issues have been found and patched in the past (and more can be in the future). DRK is new and that's to be expected. So, from my perspective, there is nothing worrying here. If there was anything really serious (like in the BTC code), the entire BTC ecosystem would go down. The instantx module might present new weaknesses, allowing new vectors of attack, but that too can't compromise the btc-code that runs the coin at a core level. Anonymity is a serious business. Any bugs or holes need to be found, fixed and the technology be given the general nod for DRK to be taken seriously. The process of hardening the code to possible vectors will probably be a long-drawn process. However that won't be a blocker for adoption for 90-95%+ of the cases. Per my analysis concerning anonymity adoption, the two largest target markets for anonymity are - those who know that their Bitcoin expenses can be tracked but do not desire to be tracked in this way by third parties (DRK is adequate for this - perhaps except very significant adversaries like the NSA) - those who have an issue of using Bitcoin in their country because their country is actively enforcing a Bitcoin ban by monitoring traffic from the network and data from the blockchain (it might be a future issue - especially in countries where local fiat that is devaluated fast is dumped in favor of crypto for wealth preservation purposes). The vast majority of such countries do not have NSA-level capabilities, thus they wouldn't be able to initiate a crackdown on DRK users. But it would require a method of effectively obfuscating IP traffic of the users so that the government of a country cannot see that its citizens are transacting with Darkcoin. It shouldn't be observable (for a government) even as a pattern of network communication. Remember: What was transacted (DarkSend mixing) is irrelevant if the government can see that you are even using a cryptocurrency when you weren't supposed to (due to the ban). ip obfuscation is already implemented in drk. |
