Developer Note March 30, 2014

Source: http://educoin.cc/developer-note-march-30-2014-2/

Where we are today
Forum / Community
- Our main forum is up and running. During the first two weeks, the forum settings made it difficult for newbies to post. This has been fixed.
- The main developer, Satoshi Edumoto, has started his ground game. Last week he joined several bitcoin meetup groups in the US, pseudonymously of course. If you are in the NYC, Boston, or San Francisco area you may soon cross paths with him! Be sure to increase EduCoin awareness at the meetups near you!

Exchanges
- EduCoin is currently listed on one US based exchange, CryptoAltex. We tested out the engine on 3/17 and it works well. While this does not count as our endorsement of the exchange, we can definitely say this exchange offers the only opportunity to buy EDU at 1 satoshi. Market volatility will soon takeover and the 1 satoshi price point will be history.
- EduCoin is marching up the voting polls at Mintpal, a high volume exchange based in UK. Mintpal has a growing alt-coin following and with its sleek interface and customer support, may one day overtake Cryptsy.
- EduCoin is currently 4th in the voting poll at Allcoin, a relatively unknown exchange but it appears to have a strong Chinese customer base.

Media coverage
- The EduCoin dev team has connected with a diverse number of journalists who cover cryptocurrency on twitter. The dev team will not be pitching stories to any of them directly (as this is frowned upon) but will post press releases and commentary periodically. Connect your twitter network with either the EduCoin twitter here or the main developer here.
- China tech news giant Hexun, one of the largest independent online financial websites in China, recently published an article detailing EduCoin and its potential to contribute to China’s massive higher education needs by 2025.
- A cryptocurrency blog called Cryptoarticles has posted a write-up about EduCoin. Thank you jdebunt and mshanti for the coverage.

Educational Crowdfunding Proof of Concept
Based on the crowdfunding discussion at bitcointalk, we have an exciting development for the community. We informed crowdfunding company Pave about EduCoin and the potential to help organizations like them integrate bitcoin/educoin for donations. They declined. One of our devs thought of the idea to create a proof of concept. We are proud to announce a teaser to http://www.educoin.tips (in beta only)

What we are working on. Please help!
- The educoin subreddit needs moderators and a design update. To become a mod, the requirement is that you have posted at least 5 times with more than two replies in each post. When you meet the requirement, contact the current mods for a tryout. As for the design, the dev team really likes r/Murraycoin’s subreddit format, but any clean header will do.
- This week’s focus is to continue voting at Mintpal (because volume) and Allcoin (because China). We are 2~3 weeks away from getting listed but this could always accelerate!
- Anyone interested in making EduCoin (EDU) graphics? Here are the primary bitcoin templates:

@iceker  Thank you for sharing information about EduCoin in China. We can really see the global potential for EduCoin being used by students everywhere, including by Chinese exchange students here in the US.

I am pleased to report that EduCoin is already on BTC38's radar.  BTC38 is a large altcoin exchange in China.  After emailing their editors, we noticed they posted a forum link for EduCoin in their feed.  See here  http://www.btc38.com/altcoin/   Direct link appears here http://www.coin38.org/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=5076

We agree with you that visitors to this forum should concentrate on voting at either:
https://www.mintpal.com/voting  (because of high trading volume, reliability)
https://www.allcoin.com/vote    (because of China)

I have vested interest in this coin (I have personally mined some). I dont intend to criticize/troll, just some reality check.

Coin has great potential but what is telling is
  • the low network hashrate  - 50MH/s at last check
  • forkpool controls more than 70% of network hash at last check
  • low difficulty - 0.3

I dont know if getting on major exchanges would bode well for the coin at this stage  - may be the case if it creates demand etc but the fundamental questions:

  • What does it mean for the coin for forkpool controlling 70% of network?
  • Can we consider a change to innovative algo (X11)? This may give the coin an edge - scrypt copycats are too boring for the early adopters (miners) especially with asics around the corner. X11 will be the algo for the summer - watch
  • The devs seem to be trying their best at publicity etc but what else can be done to ramp this up? Education has great potential, especially when you think about all the people/charities around the world who have an ear for education

My 2 cents

I was hoping it would get down to 20 MH/s before the block halving. We all know once it halves the pom poms are coming out.

can someone help me with my wallet, after opening it stays blank and says educoin wallet not responding. also tried to re-install the wallet without success.
yesterday I had an power down in my house so maybe it has something to do with that.

please some help I have a lot of coins in my wallet and I don't wanna lose them!!

I am so disappointed to see no one responding to the last 4 other requests in this thread to help them get their wallets going. Are you all that busy or too self centered to care about helping your community. You have people that are trying to be apart of this growing and potentially amazing addition to the education industry and you shoot them in the foot by leaving them in silence.

I was one of the very first adopters to this coin and I have had the same issues with my wallet. I've tried opening the old wallet that worked perfectly fine on my laptop and it completely locks up after loading index and goes blank. I redownloaded the wallet to my miner rig and it's loading up but just not syncing. I've moved my .conf file to the roaming folder and nothing is still working.

If you seriously can't take two minutes to help people if you have the knowledge to do so, it shows the community is weak and will not last when you have to train "noobs" to come on and be apart of this revolution. Lets get someone to answer these wallet issues, I know there have been more than just the 4 issues in this thread.

This is much more important than "voting".

Thank you so much for your support Bit_Happy. Very much appreciated and excited we have some people in this community that understand the viability of a digital currency, it's wallets & technology is so much more important than voting on exchanges! Good grief. Smiley

Okay guys, I finally got my wallet to work after hours (& a couple days) of tinkering and working through some issues.

Currently my laptop still will not load the wallet but freezes and eventually says, "Not Responding." Luckily I had my miner to work with and another Desktop. The wallet is currently working on my Miner in my basement just fine.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some random steps that I took that any of them could have been part of the solution:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. I turned off the real-time protection from Windows Microsoft Security Essentials. I then closed and restarted that program. (after it was fixed, this was turned back on)
2. I deleted every file I could find that was downloaded from the wallet.
3. I reinstalled the wallet (did this 3 - 4 times) and one thing that may seem silly I made sure my .conf file was not being recognized by Notepad and was just a white icon instead.
4. I copied the .conf file into my Roaming / Users directory which will you find in your Readme file. For those of you that might have a hard time finding it, unhide you hidden directories in your user subdirectory so that you can find it by using properties and unhide.
5. I then went to my folder where the EDUcoin-qt file was and right clicked, ran as administrator.
6. After a few moments it started downloading blocks, I let it finish until the wallet was good to go.
7. It was at this point that I copied my encrypted wallet.dat file and renamed it to wallet.dat and renamed the one in there as default_wallet.dat. When I backup my wallets I always use the name of the coin plus the date of the backup. For instance EDUcoin-Wallet-3-31-14.dat then you rename it wallet.dat. It had to take awhile to rescan the encrypted file and now I have all my EDU coin back.

If you are having wallet issues please send me a private message here or @ reply me on Twitter @webaddict. I'm willing to do what I can to help you, I don't think you'll find much help around here but we'll get that changed, I can promise you that! Smiley

For those of you hopelessly obsessed with exchanges, please give this some thought and quit thinking the end goal or the current goal is getting on these places. The first and most important goals is defining rules, uses, associations, organizations, marketing this coin to students, teachers, schools, financial aid representatives, scholarship websites, community education programs, elementary faculty, high school faculty & counselors, University counselors, School related websites, Directories and large companies that are doing business in EDU. Build the real business and the exchanges will come. If you're looking to sell this now you don't understand the potential of establishing EDU as a medium for students around the world to interact with every learning institution, training facility & websites around the world.

Let's work together at this point instead of driving voting on exchanges for brainstorming the first points of attack that can be the most influential and monumental to this industry.

I'd like to see sites like Lynda.com accepting EDU coin for people to get online training and education. Then I'd like to see other novel uses but lets start coming up with ideas to spread this coin around the intertubes instead of worrying about a silly exchange until we have at least 10 - 20 roots (adopters) down in the ground. Find and create believers, fund them with EDU coin, develop point of sale, blockchains & novel apps to use EDU coin.

Where's our EDU Scholarship Faucets?
Where's our EDU learning games to earn EDU coin?

Sincerely your brother in EDUcoin arms,
webaddict

P.S. I believe in 3 coins in the market - Bitcoin, POTcoin & EDUcoin. These coins all have their place, niches and power. I can assure you this coin has so much potential that some of you that look at it as a fly by night better take this seriously, much more to come! Smiley

bvault, thank you for your balanced and informative comment. Open discussion of good ideas moves EduCoin forward. Please consider joining our developer’s section at http://forum.educoin.cc/  if you wish to participate further.

In regards to X11 we’ve looked at the main discussion at the litecoin developers forum here:  https://litecointalk.org/index.php?topic=18166.0

We are leaning toward Coblee’s viewpoint at the moment. Switching to X11 would more appealing if there was solid consensus.  And if/when that becomes the case, then litecoin should be the first mover to change.

The EduCoin developer’s intent was to deploy proven tech over trendy tech, and we know that this has caused some individuals to label EduCoin as just another clone.  There is truth to that, but it’s okay as long as EduCoin is a just another clone that works well for education. We are interested in moving cryptocurrency forward eventually, but right now we are more focused on moving education forward. We can't do that if we create/fork a new class of crypto that only Vitalik Buterin can understand.

Second, in regards to our low nethash, forkpool, and difficulty, it is way too early in this coin’s lifecycle to see it as anything more than a temporary condition. EduCoin is in the stealth phase, and the reality is that we are not on campus yet, let alone schools or educational institutions anywhere. Also, since our scope is not as a general use crypto like many of the 270+ altcoins, we don’t have the broad support of as many miners. The solution to this is to gain more support from college students, because it is a key demographic open to adoption and ready to discover novel use cases (I will elaborate further in a later developer's note).

With that said we appreciate the support we have right now and welcome participation in any of the discussion forums. Just so this post does not get too long, I will address any points I've missed along with other updates in subsequent posts.

Change the X11 itself doesn't help much, the currency like the DOGE, AUR doesn't have to be what X11 algorithm, which it doesn't matter, is the main purpose and role of EDU, but also did not care about the miners more or less, the key is to make the students accept the EDU let the school to accept it EDU, to make EDU work, rather than the so-called speculation, the major trading platform as the goal, is for the purpose of profit, should pay more attention to is the coin of special and practical value.

This! @Webaddict, you wrote the most important point in this forum about EduCoin thus far. Thank you very much

We're quoting the key part as a list in case it gets missed. Webaddict summarizes the broad potential for EduCoin in this very large and influential "niche". The education sector is actually enormous as we all know*, and with EduCoin, we can start meaningful progress in education for everyone--ourselves, our children, our friends, and maybe some of our co-workers too.

To do list by category:
1. Define rules (how our community works as a team)
2. Identify use cases (e.g. How can EDU be used?)
3. Market EDU to everyone (students, teachers, companies, etc.)
4. Build startups, apps, and services

With regards to point 4, we have already built a crowdfunding demonstrator in http://educoin.tips.  We took a standard crowdfunding framework and applied dogecoin's generosity to it. If you take a look at it, you might be able to see how one day students can simply put up compelling profiles about their educational goals/talents and get EduCoin "tips" to pay for school.  Dogecoin has really mastered it, and it can definitely be applied to EduCoin.

What ideas do you have? There are lots of miners here currently, but surely some of you are students and some of you are entrepreneurial!  Share your use cases and business ideas here or at other EduCoin forums.

Voting still continues... Part 9  Cheesy

I keep checking Mintpal and EduCoin is moving up the list. We need to get on at least Mintpal. Once EduCoin gets listed there, then more people will know about it too.

Not being on a big exchange is the main reason why EduCoin is currently not listed at Cryptmarketcap, Coinmarketcap, Cryptocoincharts, etc.
This makes EduCoin more or less invisible to A LOT of everyday cryptotraders.

Those of you Mintpal voters please continue voting! And if you haven't tried Minpal, now is the time to sign up!

Let's keep voting!

That's great. I see you made a request on Cryptmarketcap too. They actually only list if they receive feedback from users.

Everyone who reads this and has twitter, be sure to tweet @Cryptmarketcap and post this message:
