We're still decades away from island nations disappearing due to global warming.  I don't think anyone expected nations to be wiped out by 2020 and the article clearly didn't make that claim.
So sea level is rising about a foot every ten years, then?

Much less.  3.3mm per year (which converts to less than 1.5 inches per decade if the rate stayed constant)
....
So why not just say "thousands of years" instead of "decades"?

The Maldives could be gone by 2100.

global cooling is the big threat.
lol ok.  moving on.

I thought I only had 10 years to move away from the coast? Obama even is trying to help people who need to leave the coast by buying a house on the water. This is why Michelle Obama is so oppressed, she is being forced to live in a multimillion dollar mansion on the water that will flood in a dozen years, while trying to satisfy her obligations under a Netflix deal estimated to be worth 9 figures, all for doing nothing other than divide the country apart over 8 years.
Come on now, you are better than this.

Really?

If that's so scary a future the property values in the Maldives should reflect it. There should be some really great deals down there.

Hmm....

https://www.primelocation.com/overseas/property/maldives/

$6.5M? 15.0M?

I guess not.

Really what you did in your argument, when you were caught with the scary "decades" lie, was babble "Maldives." So now you are literally trying to argue that 10 inches change in sea level will sweep away the Maldives. Next you are going to say (hurricanes! West Antarctica peninsula! Acceleration! Oh My!!!)

How about just be honest, and say "thousands of years? Or maybe hundreds in some very low lying areas."

You wouldn't get my complaint then about the misrepresentation, and I know you'd love to just move on to why the real threat is global cooling.

I wonder if he intentionally picked a house built above water that probably has a life span of 10-15 years or just googled 'expensive property maldives' and rage posted without even thinking.

Does everyone remember how, young stupid Bernie Bros like me were saying that Biden is a weak candidate doomed to fail?

Well, here come the Trump ads, just as expected.

Heres one of the new Trump ads: The Bidening: Take The Test November 3rd
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ro0b4RJWTQ

I'd link to more of the Trump ads but I don't want to watch them or link to them... I think one, we get the idea.

His base will eat that shit up. Well, the hidin'Biden strategy can only take him so far.
Most competent campaigns could perform better against Trump. Let's see what Biden has in store.

I'm not saying the ads are great, or that they will even resonate with everyone. But Biden is gonna get pummeled. I think we should just get ready for 8 years of Trump.

All thanks to the DNC stealing the primary from Bernie for Hillary before the 2016 election and Biden during the 2020 election. And yes, I understand that the mainstream opinion is that Bernie lost and that there was no Shenanigans, but I don't really believe that. At the very least the DNC sabotaged Bernies chances instead of being neutral.

I guess we're now waiting for Biden to make some ads.

To be fair, Sanders is the one who is driving the platform and the party. Democrats think Clinton lost the election in 2016 because she lost the Bernie bros, and are overcompensating this time around.

Okay so "imminent danger of the island going under in decades" doesn't translate into lower real estate values?

How about you explain why ten inches higher water would erase the Maldives "in decades"? Your words, not mine.

Okay so "imminent danger of the island going under in decades" doesn't translate into lower real estate values?

How about you explain why ten inches higher water would erase the Maldives "in decades"? Your words, not mine.

People are short sighted that's why.

Where I live a bridge that was just being repaired admitedly didn't even take into account sea level rise. Everyone just went along with it because it would be too much work, apparently.

While I personally believe in less conservative climate change scenarios, If we take the US assessment it's between 1 and 4.3 feet. Many potential IPCC models put the mean change in 1.05 all the way up to 1.56 meter range. (5.11 feet max) for the year 2100.

I believe it will be worse than that. All these results have been watered down by politicians.

I live very close to the water and the real problems don't begin when my property gets underwater. The real problems begin when the high tide will make me unable to drive in or out of my house for hours at certain times of the year or when there's a storm. So even now I'm affected by sea level rise. Every extra inch makes the problem exponentially bigger.

For the maldives for example, if your house floods due to excessive rain, that extra inch or 2 would be the difference between all your furniture getting destroyed.

Also there is extra erossion that could wash away a lot of properties. Saltwater intrusion into freshwater, potentially destroying the water supply, especially in places like islands. (Many islands store rainwater, but even for those who do, there is fresh groundwater that would become saltier and worse for water uses they put it to, like growing plants)

Anyway, year after year, we see the projections getting higher and the rates increasing. Also sea level rise won't magically stop at the year 2100...
A lot of people are interested in leaving behind a legacy. If I had the money to build something, I'd want generations of people to enjoy it and change it to something better.

...

How exactly do you expect to fight climate change without vast government takeover of the energy sector causing prices on virtually all goods to skyrocket and disrupting the economy?

You know, private sector innovation is probably the best way for someone to engineer solutions to climate change because capitalism will always force innovation, granted there are incentives. I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to the government subsidizing private firms for the sake of development of green technology. Tesla is government subsidized, for example.

So far the liberal proposals I've seen thus far are "feel good" policies like banning plastic straws, which do absolutely nothing for climate change, or entering global agreements like the Paris Accord which, if all emission goals were met, would hardly do anything for global warming by most estimates.

Looking a bit further, it seems that $5M will buy you a tiny island, double that for an island with a house. But what you are buying is a 50 year LEASE from the government. You cannot own it. If the 50 year lease was previously executed, then from that person you could buy the remainder of the lease.

I'm finding it a bit difficult to worry about these people losing their investment due to random climate variations. They are literally building and selling without such concerns. Now, why should we care?

ur argument that people buying luxury homes in maldives is evidence that scientists are wrong about the country being at risk of disappearing 80 years from now is beyond stupid

when u build a house without a foundation exposed to the ocean you are really lucky if u get 15 or 20 years out of it

obv an incel like u wouldnt care about future generations since reproducing isnt an option but most ppl do give a shit that family is able to live a happy life after they are gone

You miss the entire point. THEY'RE BUILDING! They are building with whatever level foundation they think is adequate. If what they are doing is inadequate, that's their own "beyond stupid" not ours.

And people are buying what they build. At extremely high prices. A 1 bedroom condo... 3.5M...

Obviously the dictator strong-man running things there doesn't care enough to force the regulations to require 15' of dirt above sea level. Note the dirt is free, just scoop it from the ocean.

Now why is their negligence your and my problem ?

Not sure why this thread devolved into personal attacks for some reason. Not really something that we try to promote doing in this area of Bitcointalk. Say what ya want, but ya can get called out for it.

Back to the subject though: It is a pretty fair point to bring up the fact that rich people continue to buy up oceanfront homes while preaching about how all of that is going to be underwater soon.

A fair criticism to that line of thought is -- well yes, soon could mean 100-200 years though and no one buying a home is going to care about that sort of timeline if they just want to enjoy it.

The TV ratings for the DNC are way down this year and the ratings decline has accelerated as the week progressed. The DNC also had to duplicate enthusiastic voters on their live stream, presumably because they were unable to find 30 voters who were excited to vote for Harris/Biden.

The Maldives is a pretty unusual geological formation, containing almost 1200 islands or "mini-islands."

It's considered relatively safe from tsunamis but got hit hard in the 2004 tsunami, 3-5 meter water height. Water swept right over most everything.

Looks like the main business is tourism, and that's largely scuba diving.

This island nation doesn't need a world wide crash green program to lower the sea water levels, they just need good engineering and building design. But unlike most places, they really seriously need that.

Here's the tsunami.

It could be a fair point if spendulus was arguing in good faith, but he isn't.  Agree the personal attacks don't help anything.
