My threadripper is due on tuesday.

if i get it i will post a movie of it running.

I hope to do 24,000 hash at under 200 watts.

this is the 3970x.

Looking forward to your super rig Phil.

I am itching to get similar rig or two going.

Would you be considering liquid cooling or a special casing for the rig?

If I provided you good and useful info or just a smile to your day, consider sending me merit points to further validate this Bitcointalk account ~ useful for future account recovery...

Super.... default AMD fan will do?

Will you run this CPU hard or just optimum so that no need for liquid cooling?

For such an expensive CPU -- custom cooling worth it?

I have found  a slight underclock and a few less cores really makes the gear more efficient .

I am going to try this cooler

The power function is geometric so the math will always favour underclocking to some degree.
But, IMO, underclocking a TR is like detuning a Ferarri, it just doesn't seem right. Neither was
designed with efficiency in mind, just performance.

So far 26700 hash rate at 170 watts a mixed underclock

or 27600 hash rate at 223 watts stock settings.

temps are 71c on under clock
temps are 80c on stock.

26700 is about $1.38 a day
27600 is about $ 1.45 a day

24 x 170 more like 24 x 200 = 5 kwatts which means 50 cents at ten cent power

24 x 223 more like 24 x 250 = 6kwatts which means 60 cents at ten cent power.

it is a no brainer to run it at the under clock ⏰ I earn 88 cents a day vs 85 cents

plus gear is quieter and cooler 😎

the be quiet air cooler does the job

Been down clocking for an hour or 2.

gear was set at

freq 4000 volts 1.4   hash was 27600    watts were 223
freq 3700 volts 1.3   hash was 27100    watts were 205

freq 3500 volts 1.05 hash is    26200    watts are    127!!!!!

will run at this setting for a while    now add you small cpu and chips set  you go to 150  that is 3.6 watts at 10 cents = 36 cents unit is earning about 1.36

net is very close to a dollar a day.

now this is a costly build

I got a lot of deals to buy it
I had parts
I sold parts.

I lost         23000 xmr hash and some gpus
I get back 26100 xmr hash

power on the old gear was more then 1500 watts 4 gpus 4 cpus it mined at a loss
power on this gear is 150-160 watts   1 cpu mines no cpu mines it mines at a profit.

this is a one shot deal for me.

although I am really tempted to buy the big beast  3990x.

Just sell everything that mines to get it.

I did a youtube video  which is loading really slow.

You can see the build.

And listen to it it is pretty much silent.

So At 150 watts 26200 hash  = 175 hash a watt   to be fair I have tried to get good numbers on down clock.

at 250 watts      27600 hash  = 110 hash a watt   to be fair I have not tried to get good numbers on over clock.

Sorry about loading time youtube is really slow with up load.
It is about 7 minutes long I am up to 94%
Build is finished other then adding some feet to the oak slab and a tiny bit of wire management.

You will also need a 64GB fast usb drive, to store LTC blockchain. Snapshot of LTC blockchain is available from jsteafnop MEGA account.

No more. Update software at SD card and USB drive with blockchain. This is only for Apollo batch 2.

For Apollo batch 1 you will need to update MCU also (batch 1 MCU has only 256MB RAM, full node needs 512MB RAM wich batch 2 has).

Anyway, Futurebit sells an upgrade kit for Apollo batch 1 for only a few bucks.

Is it worth mining with GPUs any more? I was thinking of maybe building a mining rig, but it seems like it's not worth it anymore. Am I wrong?

this is an alt coin question it belongs in the alt coin section

at $1 a day it would take what 3000 days or 5 +years to pay back ? i suppose you mine to hold and wait for stuff to rise.  A tr hear or there to diversify cant be a bad thing but gpus give me more options like the raven fork or other things to mine ,  there are just not enough cpu coins out there to justify it imo.  All my cpu rigs have gpus too, i say throw a few gpus on with the TR to maximize the rig power be damed, mine something you expect to skyrocket in the next few years, new forks etc whatever and just wait.

back in 2013 at one point i was doing that and i have 70k or more vertcoin and expcoin or something along with over 1000 ltc but i dumped my coins low when things crashes and my gear too.  Im not doing that again

It was not 3k for me.

I sold off:

 threadripper 1920x with mobo  6k hash.  250watts
 Ryzen 5       3700x with mobo  6k hash.   125watts
 Ryzen 5       3800x with mobo  7k hash.   125watts
                                              19khash.  500watts

I have threadripper 3970x         27khash. 250watts.    4  parts purchased were:

3970x   -------------------1900
aorus 500gb ssd ---------  130
Asus mobo trx40 --------   450
be quiet cooler ----------     90
total ----------------------  2570 + 180 tax =.

 $ 2750
       77 discount on mobo
   2673
     160 discount on thread ripper
   2513
       60 discount on threadripper
   2453
       26 discount on aorus
   2427
5 discount on be quiet cooler

2422 net
1422 from sale of 3 pc's\

1000 is true tax basis of this unit. not 3000

so for 1000.

I get newest thread ripper with 3 year warrranty
New mobo with 3 year warranty
New ssd with three year warranty
new air cooler that does cool unit off with 3 year warranty and fans are all that can break under 20 seconds to replace.

so I get 8k extra hash and -250 watts

that is 180 kwatts  a month off power bill and my power now goes up to 20 cents for summer. so it means 36 a month power savings for 5 months = 180 certain savings so by oct 1st the 1000-180 = 820

and 150 days of 30 cents = 45 dollars.  so by oct 1 820-45 = 775 out of pocket.

But that is all clever accounting legal and only applies to me due to trade in of old gear.  if I held the coin from the gear sales and converted it to cash I would have 1422 on oct 1. vs -775 and the miner on oct 1

Is the miner worth 1422 + 775 = 2197 on oct 1.    well a normal purchase now would be 2750. I think on oct 1 I can get 1800 for it.

so I would be down 400.00. with a state of the art pc and 2 years + 5 months warranty left on it.

Is it correct to do? maybe maybe not

I still have gpus mining.

Have any of you tested Kapow (RVN fork) with a Radeon VII?  I'm getting 31-32 Mh at the same settings I was using for Eth... just wondering how that compares for everyone else.  Immediate profit looks good, but I expect it will plummet within 24 hours as everyone switches to it.

Have any of you tested Kapow (RVN fork) with a Radeon VII?  I'm getting 31-32 Mh at the same settings I was using for Eth... just wondering how that compares for everyone else.  Immediate profit looks good, but I expect it will plummet within 24 hours as everyone switches to it.
i have some 2070 supers on it 25 mhs 170 watts
