Recently, a thread, with posts by users addressing Wikipedia accepting Bitcoin as a donation option, albeit the efforts proved futile, cause quite a fuss. Their paraphrased response "Thanks, but no thanks!", although not entirely unexpected, need not end there. I believe, together, we can find a feasible solution in having Wikipedia re-consider their position of adding Bitcoin as a viable funding option onto their donation page:

In fact, any one of the following might also include a Bitcoin donation option (or button, if you will) onto their respective websites, when approached with the proper leverage:

With literally thousands of nonprofit agencies seeking funding worldwide, and many conducting numerous successful and yes, unsuccessful, fundraising drives, there's no reason, at all, for not having several--eventually hundreds--of them incorporating a Bitcoin donation option, complementing their current income stream.

In the offering up of this beneficial solution to augment selected nonprofit organizations, I propose the following: Bitcoin100:

Bitcoin100 is nothing more than at least 100 supporters pledging then, hopefully, honoring at least 1 BTC prior to each time a charitable organization expresses interest in embedding a Bitcoin donation button, or acceptable equivalent, onto their website.

At first, there'll be no need to necessarily donate Bitcoin. What's desired, at the onset, is more than 100 individuals stating that they'll pledge (without having to gift at this stage) at least 1 BTC to Bitcoin100 then, eventually, honoring that pledge toward only causes they're most comfortable with, for this endeavor to fully function accordingly--as I currently envision it. The reason for requiring a minimum of 100 supporters is to guarantee, optimistically, that at least 100 BTC rests in the initial wallet when charitable organizations are ultimately approached.

So, to get started, simply state that you would like to pledge to Bitcoin100 and your name will be added to the supporter's list above. As we approach the 100 BTC mark in the wallet, we'll collectively vote on which organization we want to target first. Once over the 100 supporters threshold, the requests will go out to those on the list, to begin honoring their at least 1 BTC pledge. When the at least 100 BTC goal is reached, Bitcoin100 approaches the voted upon charitable organization with Bitcoin in hand. If they decline our gesture of goodwill, the next charitable organization is approached with the exact same offer, and so down the line, until one eventually accepts the simple terms, thereupon transferring the already funded wallet to their nonprofit corporation's Bitcoin account. After the first prospect comes aboard, success will become easier during the pursuing of others.

Ideally, it would be nice if each person who pledges to Bitcoin100, does so with the knowledge that they may be donating to at least 100 charitable organizations during the upcoming year. But it's not a deal breaker if one pledges only 1 BTC now then, at a later date, only exercises the honoring of said commitment. I firmly believe that after the act of simply building the supporter's list for Bitcoin100, the rest will take care of itself.

Gaia willing, when Bitcoin re-bubbles, you can always adjust the at least 1 BTC donation option, thereby better suiting your financial position and resources.

~Bruno~

PLEASE NOTE: This post has been modified. The original post may be viewed here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=52543.msg639141#msg639141

I took deliberate care in making sure that the gist of the original post remained intact, albeit some aspects may have changed since the brainstorming period of introducing Bitcoin100 commenced. I've tried to only amend what was needed for clarity purposes as well as editing out spelling and grammatical errors.

Hey! I'll personally pledge a couple Bitcoins Smiley Nice idea Bruno!
Unfortunately I think the reasons charities dislike Bitcoin donation is that they think it's illegal/scammy and they don't want association with it.

Thank you for stating that it's a nice idea. No need to pledge any bitcoins now. Just pledge that you would like to be part of the Bitcoin100. That said, you're second on the list.

Thank you kindly, MD. You're on the list.

Although you won't be held to the amount you state you're in for, I wish to put you're pledge amount next to your name on the list. Remember, nobody has to state how much or how often they'll pledge. Just pledge to be on the list and we'll take for granted that you're in for at least 1 BTC.

Thank you, amincd. You're on the list and down for at least 1 BTC.

It's a little late now, and I need to get a little sleep. I will update this in the morning and will continue to update this each time I'm online. If theymos moves this thread, I'm taking away his German beer.  Wink

HMMM! There's no reason for any moderator to not pledge, now is there?

I just reread your post, MD. Do I read it right? 10 BTC per organization (with the caveat)? If so, I will adjust the pledge amount after your name on the list.

10 BTC from me per organization is fine.
(potentially 1,000 BTC total if we get 100 organizations)

As long as they are real organizations that have been around for a while,  I am happy to help.

I think that this is one of the best recent promotional ideas for Bitcoin that I have read on this forum.

Put me down for at least 5 BTC.

I think this is an awesome idea!
Wouldn't it be possible to make a Bitcoin contract that requires a number of people to agree on donating the held coins?
That would also make an awesome showcase of future Bitcoin use.

I really like the idea, but I'm not very rich.

Pledging 1 BTC, but will probably pull out after a couple of tens of organizations.

Edit: I propose that a buffer is made, on which we all put 1x the pledged amount. Then we can write to all organizations, and the one who accepts it gets the buffer immediately, after which we fill up the address again.

I would also like to mention that Roger Ver (MemoryDealers) has been an excellent spokesperson, and has spent a decent amount of his own money advertising Bitcoin, so if Gavin doesn't feel like this, I would have no problem with MemoryDealers hosting it.

Edit: Cheers for pledging 100 yourself, Gage! That's amazing!

i pledge 1 BTC (more later, when i get rich, I swear!!!)

this is a great idea, but I don't think Gavin will have the time / desire to be the front man for this. Someone who is respected in the community and who volunteers to this should be doing it - Gavins time is more important working on the client anyway, rather than doing the marketing, which is not his specialty. MD would be a better option I think, if he's got the time/desire.

I will contribute 10 BTC to each organization as long as Bitcoins are under $10 each.

GREAT IDEA!

They should/will all have a track record.

Updated!

Sounds like extortion to me.  Seriously guys?  You are going to tell a charity "I'll donate but only if you take it in bitcoin"?  What a shitty way to deal with charities.  Is this really how you want people to view this community?

Not extortion. Charity X will simply be approached with at least 100 BTC in hand, and kindly requesting them to consider accepting Bitcoin as a donation option. It's not like we'll be telling them to do  such and such or else no money from our group.

I respect BadBear's opinion, but would someone else here be so kind as to express my sentiment more clearly. I feel my above statement doesn't do it justice.
