Somebody apparently had a question about how I sleep at night:

Rassah would have you believe that the Bitcoin 100 is purely philanthropic and is extremely proud of mentioning that they've donated a whopping 4K to charities since they started over a year ago. They have almost double that amount that Rassah would rather refund to the donators than give to charities that have proven themselves unworthy by refusing to accept bitcoin donations. I honestly don't know how these people sleep at night.

First of all, they haven't "proven themselves unworthy," they simply have no means to accept it. I can't e-mail bitcoins, or send them by post. The charity actually has to have some way to receive it for us to be able to send it. And second, the answer as to why I would rather return the money, and how I can sleep with myself afterwards, is easy: IT'S NOT MY MONEY, AND IT'S NOT UP TO ME HOW I USE OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY. Nice to know there are other people out there who, when trusted with someone else's money, would just take it and use it for whatever the hell they feel like, thinking it's ok as long as it's for charity or their own personal cause. Frankly, that sounds a lot like government with taxes and social programs, so I could see why they would think it's ok. Sorry, I have a bit more integrity than that.

Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

To be fair, I believe Rassah's statement about returning the money was due to the project seeming static, whereupon that blame was on me at the time. As for the other aspects, Rassah handled it fine.

Bitpay has still not processed the withdrawl for MyRefugeHouse, and I don't think the director will promote it until they come through.  I know bitpay has been busy, and they are looking to hire more people, but it would be nice if they could speed this up a bit.

The director is very happy since I pointed out to her that the bitpay balance is still in bitcoins, and that the value is almost $20 now.

Just received another PM, Seth, from Steve.

Quote
...if they want the 50 BTC converted, I need an email from them and to confirm it with the email we have on the account.

Please let us know if the previous BTC50 has hit their bank account. Please PM or call me if another issue arises.

Now go get us another NPO, tiger!  Grin

~Bruno K~

The accountant just told her that $492 was deposited last week, and there is still 50btc in the bitpay account.  So I guess everything is getting sorted out.  She thought it was an automated conversion and deposit.

Steve assured me yesterday that it's been processed, but do keep me abreast if it's delayed much longer.

I believe 2013 will be a great year for Bitcoin100 and Bitcoin in general. I think it's natural that this project slowed down a bit during the Christmas / New Year period. I just came back home from a two week vacation, didn't use much Internet when I was abroad. I now have more time to help with this project, if required.

Darn tootin!

Already making arrangements to have Bitcoin 100 self-supportive, not having to rely upon outside funding.

Due to the recent rise in the exchange rate, Bitcoin 100 can safely fund over 8 NPO/NGO at $1,000 USD each.

With all the recent positive press lately, it should be an easier sell to give away $8,000+ USD at $1,000 USD a pop.

Suggestions?

I will finalize it with the NGO as soon as I get a confirmation from BitPay, else I will get back to you in one week if nothing moved until then.

..whoops, that happens when you don't put up a reminder for things..
It's been a month now, I didn't hear anything from BitPay.
[about that NGO I am in contact with, they are no US-registered NGO which BitPay might insist of]

I contacted Bitcoin-Central. They currently have no no-fees offer for NGOs.

If BitPay doesn't work out my last option is a direct MtGox account..

I think people who have a high post count like Phinnaeus Gage and Rassah should try a few different signatures and do traffic analysis on them to see which one gets more clicks.  The ones that are being used seem non-optimal.

I'm having a great month, so to celebrate I'll put in some work on getting another charity recruited.

Is there a place to see who and how much we have donated to? If not can this be listed in the first post.

I want to make sure we have only donated to 3 charities as I have only sent 3 BTC. If I have fallen behind I would like to catch up but can't find info even on the website (unless I am blind).

Thanks!

I have that info in my accounting ledger. I'll post it when I get home tonight.

some kind of notification thread would be nice where you announce that there is a new charity that needs coins. the thread should be locked besides the announcements. why? so that I subscribe to it to get reminded to honor more of my pledged coins for a charity of my liking.

also thanks for the update rassah. might be interesting to also note the time value in $ for the next charities. will be more impressive to joe schmoe.

I propose the Bradley Manning Defense Fund (http://couragetoresist.org/donate/bradley-manning.html) as a target charity.

As a founder of the Bradley Manning Support Network, I know the players so I can help out in convincing Courage to Resist (the host 501(c)3 nonprofit) to agree to accept Bitcoin.

As a founder of the Bradley Manning Support Network, I know the players so I can help out in convincing Courage to Resist (the host 501(c)3 nonprofit) to agree to accept Bitcoin.

I see no problem with supporting Courage to Resist. Please bare in mind that the amount donated will only be $1,000 and not 100 BTC (~$4,500).

All they have to do is embed the Donation Accepted Here button linking to one of their pages or directly to BitPay, of which will transfer their Bitcoin donations to fiat at zero expense to themselves.

It can be looked upon at paying for ad placement, of sorts, with the PayPal button acting as same. Yet, they're paying ~3% for the privilege on having a PayPal ad on their site, whereas we'll pay $1,000 and it'll cost them nothing.

If I figured correctly, they've spent no less than $30,000 on fees along. When they accept bitcoins, they'll never have to pay a fee again. Nor worry about chargebacks, of which I'm sure they've had to deal with as well.

I just sent 2 more BTC to catch me up and for the next one. 4b603a1d0aee79ef9c9788f7edbe4588240af9b315dc7402c3cc09bbed5f440b

The following is open for discussion and can be found here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=149892.msg1630513#msg1630513 and here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=149892.msg1630547#msg1630547

@Spekulatius

Besides $/BTC and video submissions, is there anything else you desire to see this project to fruition of which can be donated, whether a physical object or time (read providing some service)?

Thank you for asking.
You can donate anything you deem useful to this project, especially:

- Contacts of interesting people
- Suggestions on how to improve
- Animation work for animated sequences, like explainatory animations on how Bitcoins work or what you can do with them (free of any tendencies or opinions pls!)
- Anything really, just the other week some benevolent user has quasi donated his domain to us. Have a look at his gift here: bitcoindocumentary.com
- If you like making music we would love to have someone writing one or the other song for us to use in the final movie. Pls contact me if you are interested!
- Have a look at our OP in this thread, I will try to keep it up to date with assignments, users can take part in. Right now we need a Spanish translator for the Argentinian interview I recorded, while I was there. !Por favor envian mensajes a: info@bitcointhedocumentary.org o usa la función de "PM" en este forum y contactame, si están interesados! !Gracias! (and dont mind my Spanish Wink)

If you paid for a Spanish program from psy, there's a scammer tag section on this forum. Also, Dank is the best musician I can think of on this forum. I just came up with an interesting idea while penning that last sentence. Image Dank as a busker, playing(?) his guitar, accepting donations only in bitcoins, whereupon if he reaches a certain amount, he'll stop playing. Otherwise the song(?) remains the same.

<end humor>

Seeing that there's four of you, and the documentary's based on a financial aspect, what better place to start it than here?

After filming a similar work, head on over to Bank on Dave and try to convince him to start accepting/dealing-in Bitcoin. Explain to him that you're making a documentary and looking for a short term Bitcoin loan.

For starters, everything you guys are doing now that's Bitcoin related should be filmed, for it's all part of the project.

Back to the Bitcoin 100 proposal.

Currently, we have ~$20,000 worth of bitcoins setting in our coffer. All we're asking in return for a $1,000 donation is a link on your official site and a tiny mention in the credits, something you would do for some other entity willing to donate a chuck of change. You would do it for Bank on Dave, wouldn't you?

But I'm willing to go one better--a lot better. But it would entail a little effort on your part, but worth the footage. I'll explain in sec, but first the following.

Originally, Bitcoin 100's intent was to dole out 100 BTC to any non-profit that would simple embed a Bitcoin donation option onto their website, provided they met a couple simple criteria. Four have done so, and $400 to $1,200 worth of coins were donated to them, depending on the exchange rate at the time. The purpose was, and still is, to further the awareness of Bitcoin. Now some of those early entities we approached declined when bitcoins traded in the single digits (US dollar speaking). Now at $46 a coin, they may have second thoughts seeing that there's $4,600 to be had.

But I foreseen this as a possibility early on, thus suggestion that at some arbitrary amount like $20 per coin should be the cutting off point for the 100 BTC donation. Since we've surpassed that mark, and Bitcoin is obtaining more exposure, it's time to cut that figure down to $1,000 per charitable organization, but not lower, as I've mentioned a few times already in Bitcoin 100's main thread.

And what more venerable cause then your endeavor to start, leaving us with ~$19,000.

Here's what I propose. First accept the $1,000 donation. Then seek out an NPO/NGO willing to embed a Bitcoin donation option onto their respective website, and they will receive a $1,000 donation. For your efforts, $500 worth of bitcoin will be transferred to your coffer.

Ideally, it'll be nice to be filming your efforts, showing beforehand how easy this sounds, but hopefully you encounter brick walls which makes good cinema.

Do this 12 times total, and you'll receive an additional $6,000 on top of the $1,000 we hopefully gave you, leaving $1,000 in our coffer at the current exchange rate. Hypothetically if the exchange rate remains the same after your team/network-of-friends garner the 12 non-profits, we'll give you that $1,000 as a bonus. At the end of the day, our coffer will be empty and your (ours, as in bitcoiners) documentary is well on its way. I'm sure you brainiacs can figure out a way to weave the story line in on how you had to give away thousands of dollars worth of bitcoins so that you can make this fine documentary.

Think about it! It'll probably be the first ever documentary funded via the giving away of money opposed to the trying of obtain it. And it would only take some effort on your team's part, of which you should be able to collect some fine footage during the process, provided camera's in hand.

Fuck it! Make it only 10 NPO/NGO's you need to obtain at $1K a pop, and the rest is yours. And if the exchange rate goes higher in the coming weeks, of which it may, I pretty sure you'll have your $13K from us. We'll still dole it out at $1,000 per charity and $500 to you, with the balance transferred once the tenth charity is obtained.

Image the footage when you receive a yes on that tenth entity. The jumping up with joy knowing that you have earned the money hoped for to make said documentary.

What we get out of the deal is eleven more non-profit entities (ten, plus yourself) who've added Bitcoin donation options onto their websites. That's all we ever wanted in the first place. And if the exchange rate wouldn't have risen, the best we would have hoped for was only ~4 more with the current amount of bitcoins we have on hand.

The way I see it, it's a win/win for all parties concerned. The worse aspect of the entire deal is that there would be some effort on your team's (and your network of friends/associates) part. But the filming of said effort would make the quest that much more valuable.

If luck is on your side, you may even approach $20K worth of bitcoins.

The other option is doing it the old fashion way getting a dollar here, a dollar there, and in no time (no pun intended) you've have a sawbuck.

Let me know what you think.

~Bruno K~

And if you accept the above offer, during the interim of you obtaining the ten non-profits we obtain one some other way, we'll still shoot you $500 worth of bitcoins, thus one less you have to secure. But no promises.

Perhaps, a selling point to the NPO/NGO's could be a mention of their noble causes in the documentary. That'll help give them further exposure as well, especially if the film was nominated for something--or anything.

Apologies for another mega post, but...

To start off, Bitcoin 100 will be donating $1,000 USD worth of bitcoins to Bitcoin - The Documentary (BTD).

We have faith that the guys will put forth the best efforts possible to produce a film bitcoiners would be proud of. Johannes and his crew seem to have the equipment, the help from their professors and, most importantly, the gusto. They only lack that thing called money, and that's where I opted to step in to help them reach their stated donation goal.

Although I've previously stated twice prior the how and what I propose to accomplish this task, this thread will now act as the official conduit between all concerns, acting as Phase One working in concert with Phase Two of a two-part fund raising drive.

Currently, Bitcoin 100 has ~BTC430 in our coffer, equating to well over $30K USD at today's exchange rate. I propose transferring out a total $20K USD by the end of April, 2013, with no more than $10K USD ending up in BTD's coffer, provided certain criteria are met.

Phase Two Outline

The following is how the maximum amount of $20K USD in BTC is projected to be allocated.

First, as previously mentioned above, an initial $1,000 USD in BTC will be transferred ASAP from Bitcoin 100 to BTD by Rassah. Yes, we are making an exception to our self-imposed donation guidelines but, as you'll soon read, the reward for doing such outweighs the former stringency. And, for obvious reasons, the strict BTC100 per non-profit will be discontinued, unless Bitcoin proves to be going through another bubble, of which seems unlikely. In the event of such an occurrence, we'll revert back to our previous criterial standards.

That leaves $19,000, of which $10,000 will go to the yet-to-be obtained NPO/NGOs within the next 30 some odd days, ending April 30, 2013, GMT. This equates to $1,000 USD in BTC going to each of the 10 newly accepted charities per the standard Bitcoin 100's criteria, now leaving $9,000 USD. It's this dollar amount that I'll now show how it'll be dole out to BTD.

Each time a new non-profit embeds a donation option on their respective website, they would receive $1,000 USD in BTC, and BTD will immediately receive $500 USD in BTC. If the obtaining of 10 non-profits is accomplished before the end of April 30, 2013, not only will BTD receive $5,000 USD ($500 X 10), but they'll also get the remaining $4,000 USD in BTC of the $20,000 USD allocated for this endeavor.

The onus is firmly on me, working in concert with BTD and fellow bitcoiners to obtain this goal. Although 10 NGOs is the goal, as long as there's still funds available, we'll continue to match the $1,000/$500 USD till the end of April. Therefore, there's a opportunity to add more funds to BTD's coffer.

But that's the easy part. Now, I'll lay out Phase One, a tad more challenging, yet doable.

For lack of better titling, I opted for the terms Phase One and Phase Two, although the steps expressed will function congruently.

Phase One (basically, the core of this thread)

As I've outlined above, it's feasible to accomplish said task without accepting another satoshi from fellow bitcoiners. Frankly, the less than 100 people that have donated to Bitcoin 100, to date, contributed more than enough already, considering what we've done, albeit a lot more could have been accomplished. But, no real harm has been done, and thanks to the recent uptick, the value of our pool has grown several fold, thus allowing us to offer up this unique proposal.

At this point I want to thank all those who've contributed to Bitcoin 100 again for their support. I only wish there were better words to use than the simple thank you.

Thanks to the guys announcing the production of Bitcoin - The Documentary, I immediately recognized an opportunity, one that could prove beneficial to all bitcoiners, not just to Bitcoin 100 or some other singular entity.

But, there is a special request I like to make of proprietors who own viable entities and accept bitcoins as one (if not sole) of their payment options.

I'll present it in the form of a challenge on their part, and in essence they'll only be offering up their support in the form of a pledge. No escrow will be used, nor bitcoins need be transferred unless the goal is met: namely, doing what I've outlined above before the end of April. Looked upon it other way, one could consider it a bet that I can't do it, and if that's the case, then no pledges need to be kept. But if I do, then all pledges will be expected to be honored, with the bitcoins transferred to BTD's Bitcoin address 1MuNPrfNMho5UP9312m3idzauwaCi57fLe.

Prior to the penning of this post, I've yet to contact any entities to present to them what I'm about to request in the form of Challenge Grants.

Quote
Challenge grants are funds disbursed by one party (the Grant Maker), usually a Government Agency, Corporation, Foundation or Trust, (sometimes anonymously) typically to a non-profit entity or educational institution (the Grantee) upon completion of the challenge requirement(s). The challenge refers to the actions or results that must be achieved before money is released and usually involves substantial effort, so that the recipients know that they are helping themselves through their own hard work and sacrifice.

Challenge Grants:

  1. Spotlight the recipient organization and provide an endorsement from a well-known entity.
  2. Help other donors feel that their money goes farther.
  3. Enable the recipient to honor and reward the entity that issued the challenge grant.
  4. Provide the maker the opportunity to garner positive publicity with a notably large funding amount they may avoid parting with.

A typical requirement is similar to matching funds where funds be raised or acquired from other sources following a stated matching factor, often 2:1, 3:1 or 4:1. For example, a $1,000 challenge grant with a 3:1 match would require the recipient to raise $3,000 before they would receive the $1,000 grant. The challenge could require a new solution to an existing problem that had been ignored. There could be additional requirements specified that could be virtually anything, from program certification to member participation.

(apologies for quoting the Wikipedia article in its entirety)

In the spirit of the above to further amass donations toward BTD, I desire at least 10 proprietors who own companies to pledge in the form of a Callenge Grant at least $500 USD worth of bitcoins each, payable IFF I'm able to obtain 10 non-profits before April 30, 2013, GMT.

If my part is accomplished, than the $5,000 USD pledged will also be donated to BTD shortly after April 30, 2013. That would make the grand total no less than $15,000 USD in bitcoins donated to BTD.

An individual Bitcoiner is more than welcome to also pledge a similar support, and it doesn't need to be $500 USD--it could be any amount. Likewise, company owners don't need to pledge exactly $500 for whatever reason, whether they can't or won't, for it's only a working figure. But the following is why the highest possible amount pledged is desirable.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and ask for a secondary Challenge Grant from The Bitcoin Foundation (TBF), for I believe this endeavor is right up their alley. Again, it will have to be earned, provided a certain criteria is met.

I formally request a $1,000 USD pledge in BTC from TBF for BTD as another Challenge Grant, payable IFF at least a total of $5,000 USD by no less than 10 entities is pledged via Challenge Grants, of which is predicated upon I/Bitcoin 100 obtaining 10 NPO/NGOs by the end of April 30, 2013, GMT.

If all works out as I envision, that would put no less than $16,000 USD worth of BTC into BTD's coffer. And at the end of the day, Bitcoin 100 will still have funds in our coffer.

Ideally, I would desire a commitment from The Bitcoin Foundation first so that other entities may follow suit.

Apologies for going long, but it took a helluva lot longer to pen this than it took for you to read it.

I'm wondering if this is something that the people who originally donated the money would all approve of. True, $1,000 USD is only about BTC13 now - a fraction of the BTC100 we originally planned to distribute to each charity - but still, this does stray a bit from part of the initial goal, which was to convince charities that accepting Bitcoin is beneficial to them (global donations, no fees, no chargeback risks, etc).

I've begun to build BTC Aid (www.btcaid.org) a Bitcoin chairty very similar to Bitcoin100.

I need ideas and input, I can hopefully get a few well renowned people from the UK on board.

I'd feel better if 100 individuals agreed to donate a fixed amount, say 0.25 BTC. I think it makes more sense to measure things in BTC and to refer to "100" in some way even if 100 BTC is no longer practical.

FYI, it's not proper netiquette to hijack a competitor's thread to promote your own service.

Still around.
