Subject: Bitcoin100 looking for charities to donate to

Hi. Not sure if anyone from our group has contacted you yet.
We are a "charity collection" organization of 100 people (not there yet but growing) with the purpose of getting charitable organizations to accept donations in Bitcoin as a way of spreading awareness about Bitcoin. Basically, we ask that charities add a Bitcoin donation option to their page, and in exchange pledge a 100 Bitcoin donation deposited almost immediately (currently worth about $300). If you are interested, we can help you set up a system where donations will instantly be converted to USD and automatically deposited into your bank account. The benefits are that no one can freeze your account, and you can get donations in any amount from anyone in the world. The transaction and exchange fees are small, too (less than that of PayPal), and the system works great with micropayments, without $0.30 fees eating up donations. If no one else ever donates after this, at the least you will get about $300 for a little bit of work.
Please let us know if you are interested.

Thank you.

Nice! Good email Smiley

In case a mail like this is used in the future, I made some small edits. Added more linebreaks to make it less of a wall of text, and did some rewording. Bolded parts are my edits.

I hope I'm not jumping the gun with this one...

Very cool, nice job rassah.

BTCurious must be a writer, those tiny edits that most people would toss away as whatever, really improve the email, which I already thought was good.

Technically, I'm still out of pocket, but have a few seconds to post this thought. There's no problem, what-so-ever, with Bitcoin100 at the bottom of any formal correspondence, as long they, and we, know that it's not Bitcoin100 we're trying to promote, but Bitcoin, and only Bitcoin. Bitcoin100 is just a body of Bitcoiners donating Bitcoin and time toward a common cause: Help spread Bitcoin awareness via the embedding of a Bitcoin donation option onto charitable organization's websites.

Just wanted to be clear on this. That is all.

And thank you, all, for continuing the Bitcoin100 conversation. The more we know, the more we know, and you can quote me on that.

Due to all the excitement earlier, I'm behind on my housecleaning.

Sent 1BTC

Thank you for honoring your pledge, BitcoinBug. Your donation has been duly noted in the OP.

The following charity already accepts bitcoin:

http://epicchange.org/

Since they made the decision already perhaps we should add our support and make them our first bitcoin100 charity.

(or if not here is their donation address for anyone interested 1QDFQ4EyxYcZStuhgSDiNk3eQUNcUKkWrs http://epicchange.org/donate.php)

Edit - from the blockchain they've already been doing this since November 2010! I wish I'd seen them sooner
The point of the Bitcoin100 is to get major charities to accept Bitcoin. I don't think we should use this project to fund charities that already accept Bitcoin. That doesn't mean people shouldn't donate to this particular charity, I hope everyone checks it out and donates if their cause is worth it.

I think Technomage addressed this issue fairly well, dancupid. What is important, though, is that we continue to spotlight those charities that have so gracefully included a Bitcoin donation option on their websites. During the brainstorming period of Biitcoin100, I thought about creating, then maintaining, a list of charitable organizations that have already attached that option to their sites, albeit I've failed to mention it, to date, in any posts on this thread. It is in my notes, so consider this the first mention of this idea. It should prove to be a good talking point once the list is published in the OP rewrite. Another charity that comes to mind is Amani Kinderdorf of which I've personally donated to. Last, but not least, any charities mentioned here: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade#Charity. Last, but not least, again, please provide any and all found by mentioning them on this thread so that they can be include on the list that's forthcoming.

Here is a VERY interesting thread about a charity that just got their funds frozen by PayPal.

If we can talk them into taking Bitcoin we get to promote Bitcoin and slap PayPal!

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=53841.0

We can thank bwagner for causing all the excitement today. Further mentions of Regretsy forthcoming after this much needed housecleaning.

This charity is currently very prominently visible on the internet. Reddit is all over it, and it's been crossposted a lot.
If we can get this to accept bitcoin AND are able to make a significant donation before the internet's ADHD kicks in, this would make bitcoin very visible.
This is exactly what this project is made for. I think we should act on this fast and make it the first Bitcoin100 charity. And when I mean fast, I don't mean next week. Let's do it now.

+1 agree, 1 bitcoin sent

Thank you kindly for honoring your pledge, paraipan. My only concern is that you didn't do such with the hope that this pool was destined for Regretsy. Although it's not outside the realm of possibility, things have changed since you'd posted your pledge. Nevertheless, the OP has been updated reflecting your contribution.

I put up a link here: http://bitcoinx.com/charts/

Mostly this thread has been in the top10 posts anyway but we still need some 30 supporters.

Thank you kindly for the link, phelix. It's much appreciated. We need, and will get, at least 30 new supporters to reach the first goal of Bitcoin100 having at least 100 initial pledgers. I figured we'll need no less than 314 supporters to maintain us as we fledge.

*Frantically scrambles around to assemble 1 BTC out of various leftovers in various wallets

Heh, I had just sold nearly all of my bitcoins in a nice opportunity.

Nevertheless, I managed to produce 1 BTC Smiley

First major drawback for Bitcoin: When amassing BitCents, one can't look under the sofa cushions.

Thank you also, BTCurious, for honoring part of your pledge. The OP has been updated (take a gander).

This is a great initiative.

I'm in (1 BTC / CO up to 20 BTC total).

Thank you kindly for your pledge, minorman. Remember, you can honor 1 BTC at any time, towards any allocated charity, with or without stating you've done so. It's all based on the honor system, but if you do state that you've honored a pledge, I'll update the list of supporters stating such.

This concludes the housecleaning. Now on to providing feedback pertaining to Regretsy of which has a nice article on its homepage by a guess writer I'd first seen on The Daily Show the other day (one of the few shows I watch, and do so on the computer--been over a year since I've watched a real TV and there's 5 of those SOBs in this house).

I'm not a writer, no. I do plan on creating an introduction article about Bitcoin for technologically-minded people with a broad interest soon though (actually, it will be for my Bachelor study's periodical). I'll also release it to the forum for other people to read and/or use.

I beg to differ, I now have accounts on (I believe) 6 different exchanges, 3 different pools, and have 3 different clients, and that is not counting the two clients and accounts I have for alternative coins. Tens of bitcents tend to stay behind occasionally Smiley

Op is looking good!

Now, thanks for your kind words, BTCurious. And, it's no effort, at all, as long as I continue to eat the elephant one bite at a time.

When you stated that the OP is looking good, I'll assume you're in reference to the list of supporters, for the actual body of text kinda sucks.

1 BTC sent. Some thoughts about this wallet, I would suggest once we have convinced a charity we just need to donate a portion of this wallet (10 or 20 BTCs) to kick start the process because charities also need awareness (same as Bitcoin Cheesy), 100 BTCs from 100 persons is more valuable than 100 BTCs from one person.

It's nice to show how fast bitcoin is by being able to send a large amount nearly instantly, for free. We would of course make it clear that this is the money from a hundred people, who all want to donate in bitcoin.

Thank you kindly, chunglam, for honoring part of your pledge. The OP has been updated showing your contribution.

The wallet, with at least 100 BTC contributed by about 100 Bitcoiners donating 1 BTC each, is the carrot we're going to use to sway the charitable organizations to embed a Bitcoin donation option onto their respective websites. As Bitcoin100 stands now, it's highly unlikely that one person will contribute 100 BTC to any one pool unless they have a special place in their heart for a certain charity. To be clear, once again, chunglam, the whole wallet, the carrot, is needed to help convince a charity to consider Bitcoin as a donation option, and not trying to sway them empty handed with the hope of them saying yes, and by them doing so, we pull a few coins out of the wallet to give them as a thank you. I hope that makes sense. Each time I explain it, I explain it differently, with the hope that others get a handle on what is trying to be accomplished here. If one were inside my mind, they would see that I like turtles.

Yes you can. It is not decided yet which charity gets the money, so you can wait until that is decided, or you can say "screw it, any charity is a charity, and I just want this to go smoothly."

On an unrelated note, GoWest mentioned us in a blog post related to the regretsy debacle:
PayPal, Regretsy, and the Bitcoin100
