I think the last word hasn't been said about this yet and more information will come to the surface over time. I was surprised by how he justified his decision - constant fatigue and the realization that his resources were not endless, so he decided to leave before it became necessary. Extremely professional and gentlemanly approach. It turns out that he simply burned out (which is not surprising given his emotionality).
