The network tries to produce one block per 10 minutes. It does this by automatically adjusting how difficult it is to produce blocks.

Following the latest discussions, I have to say I really like the idea of banning high hashes and fast block times. Why not simply mix the ideas into one:

1. Minimal block time
2. Max number of blocks in to be mined by same miner in a row?
3. Max block time (if block takes more than 30min, drop diff to default and skip to next (maybe even ban previous 3 miners to find that block?) and put reward in charity wallet?
4. Ban miner that found more than 20% of blocks in last 24 hours? <-- great way to prevent any pool becoming able to pull off 51% attack?

This all can be done without IP banning or whitelisting (which are essentially against anything crypto stands for) I think. It also encourages and rewards smaller miners to join.

4 is a little too far IMO.  That would have banned my 5 miner pool on a couple days.  Maybe 50%, but not 20%.  We don't have that many pools to be able to do that.

3 would cause a lot of issues.  You're talking about calculating blocks between blocks, which is along the same lines as the discussion Halofire brought up. I for one don't want to see coins going to a mandatory charity.  Who decides the charity purpose?

2 and 1 are essentially in the same boat of code, and I'm 100% behind that if we can make it work properly.

I will say this about IP banning.  While it might be tricky to implement(proxies, vpn, etc), in the terms of what we're faced with, it's not against what crypto stands for.  Clever centralizes this coin.  A single IP ban to temporarily alleviate that burden would be bringing NLG back to a more evenly distributed network that isn't raped by a single pool.

Ok, I see what you mean regarding no.4, this can indeed be 35%-40%, but no more. I mean, we need to divide hashing between pools! Let's be honest, the initial idea behind crypto was to completely decentralize. Back in the early days even regular pools, like your own, were regarded as a same threat as we are regarding CleverMining now.

No.3 was on my list to be the one raising issues (so I succeeded  Grin ). I agree 100% for it to create mathematic challenges, this might be a thing. The "central" charity wallet on the other hand is not so bad IMHO. Of course it must not be directed by a central entity, but what if we put up a voting tab in the wallet where, once a month, A charity gets picked by all active users of NLG? It must be technically possible to create a wallet that can only be controlled by the majority?

No.2 and one are indeed things that have to be implemented if possible

An idea for the solution of the current Guldencoin algorithm problem:

-leave it like it is
-premine all remaining-to-be-mined NLG coins
-launch a gigantic Christmas-Guldencoin-promotion and distribute the premined NLG coins for free among the broadest part possible of the Dutch population

After that, Guldencoin will advance in an unparalleled way.

I'm pretty sure the Criptoe team would insta-sell their millions at that point.

Some people get behind coins like NLG because they like the dynamics from the start.  Complete changes like cpu mining, POS, or total mine out and distribution, aren't what some of us signed up for.  Difficulty algorithm aside, the coin is good the way it is.  Let it ride out to it's destiny.

If the same amount in time and energy would be spend by the team and community on a fair distribution method, as is being spent on the new algorithm, the fair distribution would surely become a big success.

@ny2cafeuse
What are you implying? Should the community be scared when you say "you and your gang would insta-sell millions" because it "is not what you signed up for"?
What kind of arguments are that?

Really, I think most of the community couldn't care less and would happily buy your NLG at dump prices, especially if they are Dutch and could ,-unlike you-, spend those NLG in daily life.

Is nobody seriously going to say how ridiculous these suggestions are? Pre-mine the remaining NLG coins. It blew my mind the first time I read it, and not in a good way. Maybe come up with a way to get people into NLG with the existing free 100NLG. A Christmas-Guldencoin-promotion, that could work if we do a X-MAS themed give-a-way based on the 100 free NLG people can request. How would you go about promoting it to the country?

@Fuse I can understand if you would. Guldencoin needs mining, like mining needs miners. POS is a huge no-go at this point and pure cpu-mining will fuck up a lot of existing miners too and we will have a lot less miners, most likely. What we could do is make current mining easier to understand by creating plug&play-type hardware. It's all still a bit in the tweaker-o-sphere. I know a little bit about computers, but I find it pretty hard to mine with current mining-equipment. Let alone that my mom or sister would do this. If we could find a way to get more miners that just need a simple device or can use cloud mining for an affordable EUR-price, we would have a good influence on both mining and getting more users in for NLG. On both a technical level and a usability-level. Because we can use Guldencoin in real life, which is a huge plus alongside being able to mine a coin that is worth money.

For example, set up a Betarigs website where people can pay with euro's and the rig-operators get paid in Bitcoin. That would eliminate a step that people find weird now. Buy Bitcoin > Buy hashing > Mine NLG .. Wait what? So if we could make it Buy hashing > Mine NLG and keep on adding to the usability of our coin. We're golden.

I am under the impression that many of you want to go too fast, without realizing that it's going as fast as it can at the moment. We're not even at a snowball-effect yet. Have you told your friends, family, co-workers about Guldencoin yet? Realize that Guldencoin has a lot of potential. If giving away free coins was easy we would've had 4-5-6 times the requests already. Because we haven't been outside of the news at all - https://guldencoin.com/news. We've been on TV, newspapers, interviews, Russia Today, radio and online on several websites. There are a lot of people aware of Guldencoin, they really are, and I've spoken to about 800 possible merchants.

That's right. 800. And their response was always "not yet, we're waiting to see where it goes" or "is this a legal form of payment?" and they are currently waiting for us to step up. Like LTEX said, once you have the users the merchants will follow easily. It's always a chicken-egg situation. And the fact that we have 60 merchants with our current amount of users is awesome. Want Guldencoin out there? Get to it. Tell your friends.

I would say that our ability to influence the Gulden price is pretty substantial.  And while we don't use NLG on a "daily basis", I doubt many NLG millionaires do either.  I'm not saying it to "scare" the community.  I'm saying it because my team is devoted to making this coin successful.  It's in our best interest to do so.  If changes like this are made, we're out.  You're right about one thing though, changes like this aren't what we signed up for.  I got involved because I was asked to start a pool for this coin.  I asked my team whether they would get behind it, and we reviewed the coin settings and prospectus.  We agreed that this coin had a long term outlook that we all liked.  I'm sure a lot of other community members did the same thing and feel the same way.

While we haven't made as many connections with vendors as people like Buerra has, we've been working behind the scenes on code review and potential projects to benefit the community, one of which is very close to being announced.  We've got skin in the game... can you say the same?

People buy in to a coin long term for stability.  Not for willy-nilly changes that effect everyone involved.  These ridiculous ideas about drastic changes in the core dynamics of the coin are nonsensical at best.  The devs have a distribution method in place.  They don't need to focus on that.  They need to focus on code.  Let the community focus on the PR.

Buerra- I'm with you 100% in what you're saying.  I agree with the cloud mining idea as well... Euro to NLG, no BTC in the middle.  They have that already.

When I was heavily involved with TAG, I had an idea for miners for the everyday user.  I'll poll my team and see if we can come up with some ideas.

Great idea! But come up with ideas of distributing fairly Grin

Sometimes thinking out of the box leads to usefull thoughts, discussions and other ideas. The contribution is great but, yes, imo not the way to go.
Going POS is bad too, big pockets gets bigger and will be like a big black cloud over Guldencoin land. Imo bad in the long term.
CPU mining? Most Dutch people nowadays have laptops. CPU mining on a laptop? Please no, the hardware is nog made for that and my fan makes too much noise.

We have to look at the future:

- hobbiest miners and solo miners? they will be gone
- miningpools and miningfarms? There will be many, mainly overseas where power costs are much more cheap
- mining equipment will get stronger and stronger

When there are 10 miningpools mining with 100GH power, there will always be a very big one with maybe even 100TH. Who knows? The Clevermining problem is here and now and there will be others in future which for sure, will do much more harm on our network if we don't change. We have to learn from Clevermining, it's good it has en is happening. We have to be glad we learn from this now, at this very moment, and not much later when it would not only harm the network but also a much bigger Guldencoin economy.

So that's why I am sure a new algo will not only be great for Guldencoin but for the whole cryptolandscape! We will write history, people will talk about Guldencoin like... well forever. This will be a huge milestone and the step forward everybody is waiting on!

For the very short term: a lower price will keep us save until the algo change. After that... only fireworks, if you ask me...  Cool

Cheers!

"Is nobody seriously going to say how ridiculous these suggestions are?" (Buerra)

and

"total premine isn't that smart" (veertje)

OK, maybe you are right, who knows. But could you please explain why you think so? Thanks.
