Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

Gingerale's videos are all very good (and somewhat recent), you should check out the rest of them that he has put up as well.

Speculation thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=753252.0

Currently about 70K buy orders above .004  -  Check back in one minute. It will change Tongue

Recent development and DNM news indicates a strong possibility for further upward pressure.

I hope I can get it done would be nice to mine this coin I have never mined a coin before. Glad I bought when I did it looks like people are getting into xmr could be the next big thing I have been reading about it sounds better then dash and I like that there are only 12 million coins not like 100 million. Dose anyone know how much this coin was when it first came out? Anyway thanks for the help!

The initial number of moneroj in existence will be approximately 18.4 million. However, once that number is reached, a perpetual tail emission of 0.3 xmr per minute will go into effect.

...how much this coin was when it first came out?

https://poloniex.com/exchange#btc_xmr

It looks like it started off really high, or just pumped initially to 0.01 btc and then went back down sharply at first and fluctuated over time.

So based on those links, if I did my maths correctly...there are approx 157680k XMR created per year? - thats not much inflation ...very impressive

0.3 XMR created per minute so ....0.3 x 525600 (minutes in a year) = 157680

0.3/min is the eternal tail emission not what is currently being mined.  Now that blocks are 2 minutes it will be 0.6/block.  Currently the base block reward is just under 11 and it decreases ever so slightly each block.  When it gets to 0.6/2min block there it shall remain.

Here is an emissions spread sheet and how it compares to btc.

There was a very brief (as in one or two days) pump to 0.01 when the coin was added to Mintpal. Other than that the current price is close to the high end of the trading range since the beginning.

Is mining XMR still profitable with a regular computer? - nvidia gtx1080 GPU

Depending on your electricity costs it may be. Historically whenever there has been a rapid rise in price, as has happened recently, mining has been reasonably profitable. It is also possible to mine on CPUs.

This prompted me to look to see how many nodes were up.  189, which is lower than the recent average.  Go to query hash rate, and realize that my node is one of the recent dropouts.  So 190 now  Cheesy  Hash rate is in the bottom of the recent range.  I expect rapid rises in both if the price steadies or continues to rise.

I first got started in bitcoin by buying and selling precious metals on bitmit. I was thinking about doing the same thing with monero on oasis market now that they accept monero. Would anyone have any interest in this?

As a side note, does anyone have any idea about the legality of doing something otherwise perfectly legal on a place like a darknet market?

Monero needs a clearnet bitmit style auction site.

what about your silver asset on NXT, is it abandoned? Why not just revive the NXT offering and get help marketing that?

I am not a lawyer.  It is insane to think that lawful transactions are somehow made unlawful by being performed confidentially.  That said, the government is batshit crazy, and the variety of regulation is beyond human comprehension, and hence unpredictable.

I think it would be in the interest of any XMR holders to cultivate any transactional venue offering support for xmr-denominated transactions, with lawful trades being of priority.

I'm no lawyer either, but there probably won't even be an investigation if they found someone doing this.

However, it could be seen as tax fraud/tax evasion and could be prosecuted as such (assuming your local police force has resources to do so). However, if you stay on PGP and encrypt your messages, it will be hard to actually get any proof for their case, unless they seize shipments of the product you are trying to sell or something similar (but if the item isn't illegal in itself, the post system will have no reason to seize it).

Anyway, there's always Open Bazaar as an alternative. Not sure how active that place is at current moment, but you might get something sold.

It would most likely be treated as money laundering.  I disagree with that potential line... But that's where my money'd be.
