Meh, so now Vitalik feels threatened by Monero? I think we're winning guys! I think you are right. From later in the comment thread (dga responding to VB): VB:
IMO, correct mining algorithm ethics require you to disclose all information that you know about how to optimize a given algo implementation. But a looser standard is that you should not intentionally cripple an implementation that you release to the public.
From the evidence provided in the article, it seems as though Monero failed both tests, so it perhaps is indeed a premine scam. However, that is a grave accusation, and one that deserves giving the Monero devs a fair chance to respond.
dga: This would be a very reasonable thing to assert if I had anything to do with Monero. I don't. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, none of the people who profited from early optimized Monero mining had anything to do with crippling the code in the first place. Think of it this way: You step in and inherit a legacy codebase for a promising and interesting new cryptocurrency. You're immediately beset with demands -- fix bugs, release binaries, answer help questions, etc. In retrospect, it turns out that the code you took over had been de-optimized by its original creators. Is that your fault? Of course not. What's the standard that we should hold the Monero developers to? To fix any bugs or deliberate weaknesses as fast as they can after they become aware of it. To get up to speed and review and understand the codebase they inherited as quickly as a reasonable developer can do. You're picking your words very carefully, so I suspect you know exactly what game you're playing trying to hint that Monero is a scam while being able to defensively say "well, I only said perhaps", but it's very transparent. And, personally, I find it mildly offensive that you're twisting what I wrote in the article and ignoring some of the substantive points. I find it hard to understand how someone who just raised 30K BTC in an IPO can feel threatened by Monero enough to want to spread deceptive FUD about it, but that is the most reasonable interpretation. I guess it is also possible he didn't actually read the post before making a deliberately provocative but ultimately stupid comment about it, and is now being defensive about his idiocy being called out.

Nice article, thx for posting it. I didn't know Risto was going to have some of Monero moving into the BTC Castle (so to speak). Congrats and thanks for the support Risto. Its about sharing

They went back and forth a few times and VB backpedaled, severely, although still seems intent on leaving anti-XMR wiggle words in there: If the current Monero developers were not involved in that, then awesome, they are completely cool and legit folks in my view

This is my first post here, but I am not a "troll". I am a significant holder, accumulating over the last months, and you can tell by my twitter @indiemaps that I have supported Monero in the past. But I can't see how anybody can trust the socialist devs of this project after the revelations of the past few days. I will not dump b/c I believe there is more BTC to be made off this flavor of the season coin. But I have certainly lost my trust and faith in the coin and team.
The developers claim to want to separate the monetary system from the government, yet David Latapie also believes in socialist education, redistributionist schemes, and forced/violent taxation. How this is compatible with an anonymous cryptocurrency is beyond me.
I and I hope all the other anarchists who have supported this coin in the past need to move on....to a coin with nonviolent developers who do not wish to force their views of society on us.
Dear me, you seem to have forgotten to think before posting.

Dear me, you seem to have forgotten to think before posting. They are forgetting that the coin is bound by mathematical reason rather than the reason of the developers. Unless they actively worked to make Monero unanonymous (and useless) I can't see what all this fuss is about, for sure, indiemaps is a troll.

My little sister could have read dga's post and not get as confused as the supposed genius Vitalik, this is a very disappointing move from him and I bet he was hoping no one would challenge him. I'm sure he has been hoping all along that Ethereum would walk cosily into the number two spot unchallenged and now a number two competitor is growing strong, well the final desperate attack is FUD and lies.

It's more likely VB just skimmed DGA's post and didn't realize that it was Bytecoin that came out with the crippled miner. The soap opera involving Bytecoin, CryptoNote, Bitmonero, Monero, Quazarcoin, Boolberry, etc. . . is so tangled. And on top of that, there is the FUD spread by the Bytecoin scammers and sockpuppets. It's not surprising that outsiders have a hard time appreciating why Monero deserves to be taken seriously.

Your little sister, does she have an upcoming IPO perchance? Any shares available?

I would be willing to chip in for an article about the history of Monero - just the facts. I would be willing to chip in recurrently if the article were to be maintained up-to-date.

If some geeky kid with a massive conflict of interest accidentally misinterprets/intentionally misrepresents it, that's not our problem. And pa, How Dare YouTM mention other coins in our narrow-minded Monero-only thread? Don't you know how much butthurt will flow through the partisans if you even allude to the existence of Monero's Cryptonote siblings? You must say 100 Hail Tacos for writing the forbidden letters (' bee bee are') in this sanctum sanctorum of the One True CN implementation. Even speaking of [ bee tee see] is completely off-topic, don'tcha know?

Unless they actively worked to make Monero unanonymous (and useless) I can't see what all this fuss is about, for sure, indiemaps is a troll. The coin is bound by the code that makes up its codebase. As I will not be auditing all of the code there is going to be some trust in the developers involved here. David Latapie's state socialist views are a stain on this project, and he cannot be trusted around the codebase of an anonymous coin. If he is not involved in actual coding then he would be even easier to replace. I believe I have provided enough evidence that I am not a "troll", but it doesn't really matter. I haven't and won't mention any other coins in this thread (and haven't posted in any others). In the end you owe me no satisfaction. I have and can drop the price....but only a little bit and the coin will recover or keep falling based on nothing related to me. I still hold significant amounts and will buy no more.....so I have no interest in trolling or creating that dread FUD. I am looking for a good exit, and will make sure I do so while turning a nice BTC profit.
