I have been working on upgrading Gapcoin Core to a recent codebase with all Bitcoin's improvements... It is still a work in progress, but should be stable enough for replacing 0.16.3 and 0.9 already. I am willing to regularly maintain Gapcoin Core to keep it up to date for current systems and enjoy the improvements from the Bitcoin Developers, though that is of course if there are still people around Mining and Holding Gaps, wanting to see Gapcoin stay alive for many more years, if there is no interest I shall just forget about it and sell my Holdings on FreiExchange, but that would be a shame... Otherwise that update could be a first step in revitalizing Gapcoin...

Actually, it has been a while since I had interest in working on Gapcoin's Code, but that is already some work to maintain Riecoin... It is best to put in common the efforts, so Gapcoin 2606 is based on Riecoin Core 2606 (itself based on Bitcoin Core 31).

I also saw that the Gapcoin Club Site disappeared, I guess the worst happened to BitcoinFx who was running it as I don't see any sign of life from him since 2023... The Domain Name was available so I bought it and revived the Site.

You can find the Code on GitHub and more Infos about the Upgrade on the Gapcoin Club Site. There is a jump of like 5 years since 0.16.3 so you cannot just replace the Binaries and restart, please follow the Site's Upgrade Notes... That is the price to pay for not updating for years, though once paid, running a Gapcoin Node will be much more enjoyable for everyone and upgrades will be easier.
The Chain should be entirely resynced, though the process is securely sped up with some Checkpoints, it should not take more than hours, but if you really need it or if you are impatient I could provide a Bootstrap... I am running some Nodes and hardcoded them so no longer need to manually look for them and "addnode".

Years ago I designed a Hard Fork for Riecoin to help beating new Prime Constellations Records, and I would also be interested in doing so for Gapcoin, though I am less familiar with the Gap PoW, so suggestions from those who know well the subject such as Miner Developers, on what can be changed in the Protocol like the Block Header Encoding, are welcomed.



By the way cool to see that the Gapcoin Miners are still finding new records.

Short Laïus :  

Even if still very early, I can now confidently announce the upcoming release of a new miner.
I’m already seeing performance that could be described as incredible, given how early the miner update project still is.
I’m probably only about 20% of the way there. So need some more weeks, a couple months max for a polished release.

Only CRT mode is usable right now; it’s just a matter of pitting two radically different miners against each other.
The good news, however, is that the current speed is already much higher than any mode or config of the legacy miner.
We’re talking about roughly 37,000 62,000 gaps/sec at shift 512 with an m22 file on a RTX3090.
For reference, a 3900X CPU running at full throttle could process about 1,000–1,500 gaps/sec in the same configuration.


This is just the beginning; as mentioned, I still have a lot to test, invent, and challenge. Another leap in performance is still possible.
-I’m referring here solely to the version for the “legacy” 0.16.3 network.
-Next will naturally come a version optimized for v2606, which is the planned successor for the Gapcoin network.
-And finally, once it’s complete, fully optimized, and stable, I’d like to take advantage of this new v2606 to propose a hard fork to remove certain major limitations.

Given that, until now, we couldn’t really mine at shift 1024 efficiently—processing only a few hundred gaps per second at best—we’re now facing the opposite problem.
This miner is/will be capable of mining at shift 1024 way faster than the official non-CRT miner at shift 25 with a full throttle high-end cpu.
It would therefore be rather ridiculous to keep this limit. Of course, taking into account the implications for the network and consensus, security risks, etc...

I think the new ceiling will need to be moved to between shifts 4,000 and 8,000, or even higher. Some of my tests went as high as shift 147,200 while remaining functional—albeit slowly—at that point.
So shift 16,000 isn’t an unreasonable target either; on the contrary, using multiple engines is entirely possible to cover several bit ranges.


Well, just to tease you a little, here’s the current test version.
It’s by no means final; major visual changes have already been coded and are planned:

Still rising.
The 3060 + 3090 delivers 100-130 120-150 170-200 200-230MPPS on the network. For now.

With a hashrate like that, there is actually a realistic chance to break the world record (if 41.9387837315 is still the one, maybe it was already improved by other means, I don't know. All other Gapcoin's best results were beaten by mathematicians, I guess).

I do not care much about >50% of the hashpower in single hands, because most of the time it was this way for Gapcoin. It was good enough that somebody mined it at all. But of course I'm hoping that wizz13150 will make a miner public eventually.

Few days ago I had built it without any problems on Linux Mint. Also readme is very good.
This public miner probably is not as good as their current miner, but at least you can mine various shifts (not only 32) on GPU with it, and GPU mining usually is much more efficient than CPU.

And about bit shifts bigger than 1024: I think the average computer parses blocks with a bigger shifts much slower, so I'm not very enthusiastic about it. Maybe 2048 would be ok. Anyway, Gapcoin doesn't even have any updates of the wallet software for a long time.

I'm just working on 6 differents miners for Gapcoin, Riecoin and Primecoin, for GPUs and CPUs.
It's just a crazy amount of work just for me, so it takes way more time than the initial project.
I also need to finish the GPU version before I can deliver the CPU version.

For the records, someone found a 42+ merit gap just yesterday.

Anyone can test my last stable version of the gapcoin gpu miner from the Discord, just ping me. (Windows, Ubuntu)

Also starting a fork today, from the v2606 suggested by PttnMe, to mine at higher shift than 1024. The current speed already allow this, and I think i'm far from done. And introduce/test several changes to allow better perfomances, network synergy, or more interesting maths results.

I'll keep you updated asap, during this coming month.
Everything will be public, in fine.
