I don't know about Video Cards, that depends on how you tweak it, which could take up a bit of time.  Network Hashrate is about 10-20 Million Primes Per Second.

Pretty much any hardware can do good mining here.  You could mine with Intel Atom chips!

The Network needs a couple full nodes not behind a VPN to support blockchain syning, it might take a while for Peer2Peer sync.  BitcoinFX has a blockchain database to download it you look back a bit and check his website.

This
should be our #1 goal for new thread, but back-porting to Bitcoin Core
9.2.  (Upgrading PrivateKey from 180ripmed to 256-Sha2)

#2 back-porting Unlimited Add-Nodes so Large Data Centers can mine
behind Tor or VPN's effectively.

Maybe we need to Shanghai Gmaxwell over to our team..............

I think Mining with the QT wallet software is better long term incentive
to add Free Software miners integrated into the Wallet (Video Graphics
Miner/CPU Miner................"eventually"..............."Maybe".....)

Hi -

is the coin still active ?

I can see that you have had block explorers in the past, but none seem to work.  Can I help by creating one ?  Is there a bounty ?

Thanks

Gap works fine and always has a lot of people on the network. The original dev has a lot of gap that he/she bought, and so has not abandoned the project to the wind, but there hasn't been much activity. You are welcome to help develop the coin.

An explorer is at https://chainz.cryptoid.info/gap/ Its hosting expires soon and can be extended by donating any amount to 1M1sWXQ97kVx1Lk6SCVZvuTjt68od2MrVQ its $9.9 per month and seems to get extended bit by bit by generous people. When the coin goes up enough it will probably get extended a lot more.

As far as math coins, gap is better in some ways than riecoin and primecoin. Why it was removed from Poloniex I don't know.

Since there is a block explorer, no bounty for that, but if you want to do something useful, have some idea, mention it and somebody might offer a bounty bto you to do it. Gapcoin has avoided hype and pumpiness and sleazinesss so nobody is going to bounty a signature campaign or anything like that, but if you have a good idea say it.

TBH I've been propping up the block explorer along the way with GAP I've mined and converted to BTC + a few donations from @UsernameNumber7

I'm now returning to this project after not being able to give it to much attention recently.

I noticed that the original dev. (or someone else has extended the domain hosting for gapcoin.org) however, with the j0nn9 on 'hiatus' we will continue from https://gapcoin.club at present still.

Not sure what bounties we might be able to muster up currently, although were are seeking a new developer.

Quite a number of Gapcoin users currently connect and mine over Tor, as we have a bunch of researchers from various universities, including users in China.

There's always been a lot of university type computers on the list. I guess mathkids at university fix up the school's computers to mine Gapcoin for them at night probably.

Anybody have ideas for bounties?

One thing a bunch of coins have been doing is putting exchanges in the wallets.

If somebody could make a wallet that had Gapcoin, primecoin, riecoin, gridcoin and maybe a few others, in the same wallet, and allowed some kind of exchange amongst those coins between peers, within the wallets, I'd help bounty that.

added
Just as a general rule, with any coin, you can go to the explorer or exchange and get nodes that are up to the minute.

For example https://chainz.cryptoid.info/gap/ has a network tab that shows the current nodes

and https://www.cryptopia.co.nz/CoinInfo/?coin=GAP shows the current connections for their wallet

All coins have node lists or coins might have nodes built in but an explorer or exchange has real time info

Thanks to whoever extended the block explorer hosting! I was going to renew it (again) and was delighted that someone else had already contributed in this regard.

Considering the future possibility for new bounties ...

TBH I'm personally not really in support of built-in wallet exchanges or other kinds of wallet additions, certainly not in the main branch anyway.

A wallet is a wallet IMHO and any connectivity to 3rd party apps / services etc., is mostly rather hideous in reality! However, a separate branch with built-in exchange functionality is certainly a possibility, if the community supports it. I'm not a developer for Gapcoin.

I think that our basic essential community requirements (moving forward) included;

1. A new known dev. who can bring the code base more up-to-date and compile a windows wallet with the latest SSL + we could also use a Mac wallet ofc.

@PeterTheGrape - I'm wondering if @gjhiggins - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=254673 - would have the time and/or inclination to work on Gapcoin. It seems that many folks from this thread have also had a long-term mutual interest in Slimcoin - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1141676.0 , myself included, (with @gjhiggins now being the main Slimcoin projects take-over dev.) In fact, I'll drop him a PM after this post! I see no reason why my existing Gapcoin servers would be able to be extended to host a Slimcoin daemon as well.

2. A working pool or two and perhaps a new faucet.

With these aspects in place I'd be OK with starting a new thread and commencing with promotional activity for the new world record attempt.

I'll soon add a second stage to the existing cloud mining guide to suggest limiting the default Gapcoin daemon miner to only utilize around 65% CPU - as Digital Ocean, Linode and Vultr don't seem to flag instances that are running Gapcoin with such a CPU restriction in place. It's not mining anyway, it's math and scienceWink

To stand a real shot at a world record prime gap we only need to focus / increase the network hashing power for a relatively limited duration.

Gapcoin has already found lots of record gaps. Yom Ki fixed up some script to automatically submit found gaps and they do seem to show up, you can search "Gapcoin  2017" on Nicely's site, http://www.trnicely.net/#TPG

Regarding a dev, it would be great to get gjhiggins, he has added a lot of value to slimcoin even if not yet reflected at exchange.

Regarding pools, I do not understand exactly how that works, but the goal of the coin is to find gaps and you should clarify whether pools or individual miners will have a net better result in terms of gaps. Even though I'm not a miner I would tend to support individuals over pools, unless pools offer some advantage in finding gaps. As I've said, I don't mine and don't know which is better etc.

Regarding exchange in wallet, you are right. But there is another thing to keep in mind. The current 'exchange' system is not suitable for when coins go mainstream. There has to be some way found to provide very easy liquidity, conversion from one currency to another, without the need for 'payment processors', merchant service companies etc. It isn't practical to connect all coin wallets, hundreds of coins, but groupings of coins, like science and math coins, seems smart.

Obviously
no one is a developer of G.A.P. everyone contributes as he sees fit and
 is able.

But the spirit of the new thread is not for promotion purposes but to
update the "Essentials" into the first page to get someone interested in
started to keep things moving with minimal input or investment.

In a perfect world I would want Gmaxwell to "backport" code.  We do not
need a full time programmer just someone who knows C++ enough to
cherry-pick from Litecoin and Bitcoin Core and backport to Bitcoin Core
9.2

Someone could do it in their free time, I would prefer to keep the loose
decentralized structure instead of feel "comfort" from a
developer ignoring the sense of urgency to contribute their skills in a
manner of their choosing with the knowledge that it would be done
without much fighting or hijacking, but obviously Bitcoin shows that
that is what is likely even with decentralized models for implementing
code.  And sometimes malicious actors try to get their code in as well.

If we get the new Thread than we can wait around for a New Programmer
who will see the price of G.A.P. and invest themselves as a real
entrepreneur would do.  There is no Fed.Gov pig trough here to feed off
it will succeed or fail due to our collective skills or lack thereof.

Furthermore, Maybe Jonn9 will awake from his Coma and return and thus
the need for a developer will be negated, but what good is a developer
without a proper vision?

The most I would feel comfortable with for a QT wallet would be
integrated GPU and CPU mining which is no small feat considering the
lack of interest in any vision for such a direction.  It would need to
be customize to control integrated only GPU mining with proper
manipulation and Only CPU mining or full blown GPU/CPU mining which is
the end goal using the Solid framework the QT computer code brings to
the table.

Cheaply we would be better served to focus on someone who could update
Github code base with new SSL cert rather than trying to focus on
Windows or Mac niche realms.  Unfortunately there are not enough
resources to do such things for G.A.P.
Someone who is a carbon system will demand too much compensation for
such trivial additions to the G.A.P. program.  But updating the Github
code would benefit the most bang for the buck.

I know if someone came along and tried moving Gapcoin to the newest
Bitcoin Code dumping the integrated Miner I would be gone.  Probably
keep my coins but Daemons is not something that interests me and the
work load is not worth the effort.

Daemons and QT are not opposites however they complement each other, I
just wish to not adopt the one or the other approach as Bitcoin has,
both can grow together and fulfill different needs which makes both
stronger.

Gmaxwell could update this in his sleep if he wanted to, but we need a
strong QT developer if anything who knows C++ as well.

Your post before that probably added a lot of knowledge to the thread for tech types but ...

hardfork = no please.

I don't know what all that quantum optics python stuff is but if it requires a hardfork and prevents previous wallets then I vote against it.

I will say that I'm not incapable of completing a new windows Gapcoin wallet release including updated SSL etc., however a new competent developer is required to move the project forward.

Gapcoin becoming fully 'decentralized' without a working pool for sometime now has been interesting. Mining in the wallet should remain an essential focus for an attempt at a new world record prime gap - along with pooled mining.

Right now, we really need a new trusted pool to muster some fresh interest and to start the new thread topic etc., I have been asking various long-term community pool operators if they would take a look at running a new Gapcoin pool.

Gapcoin has already found lots of record gaps. Yom Ki fixed up some script to automatically submit found gaps and they do seem to show up, you can search "Gapcoin  2017" on Nicely's site, http://www.trnicely.net/#TPG

...

@gjhiggins is currently unable to assist with Gapcoin development due to other time constraints.

Any pooled mining at a set 'shift' difficulty increases the total network difficulty and the potential for finding new prime gap records.

For example, I'm currently solo mining using the crt-512 shift CPU miner and with a network difficulty between 21 to 22 - hitting a new block will often therefore carry a merit of 24 and above.

Pooled mining with the crt shifts (which gives opportunity for higher merits) did not exist with noncepool (gapcoin's only ever working pool). However, pooled mining could be made to work in this regard, as long as miners know which shift to mine with and at which port provided by the pool etc.,

Although, with an increased network hashrate and difficulty - blocks with higher merits will be found automatically.

" if the difficulty reaches 35.4245 38.07, every block will be a new world record:

Top 20 Prime Gaps - http://primerecords.dk/primegaps/gaps20.htm "

So, currently we need to reach a difficulty of around 30 to 35 and/or one of the (solo) miners at a higher shift needs to be 'lucky'.

With a couple of pools, CPU and/or GPU solo mining and real CPU cloud mining instances in operation - it is highly feasible to smash a new prime gap record with gapcoin mining.

My first inclination would be to try and have a landing page that spells out the benefit of having more people on the network, then send targeted traffic to the page, like per mil ads in science journals. Would be a cheap campaign and might lead to a vast effect. I am probably not going to do that, but if somebody with an interest in math who wants to learn about advertising wants to try I might chip in a little for ads.

Also, from your link I see the 17th highest merit ever prime gap was found by Gapcoin. But also there is one person on the list Dana Jacobsen who has some skill in finding high merit gaps. Eventually, if the coin gets more organized, it may be wise to see if somebody like that knows something that can sharpen the algorithm.
