still, this doesn't seem like their data would be a very complex.
And that is exactly the kind of thought that can lead to this kind of problem. Often there is a lot more complexity than one would expect. Sometimes there are clever ways to get around this with pre-caching, indexing and other kinds of optimization but if you're not expecting the complexity, you're not going to be ready for it. I was actually considering setting up an exchange myself a couple of years back. Coincidentally enough, for Pokemon trading cards (and also separately considered for video games). I didn't get much past the "pondering it" stage but I could see there were hidden depths that could catch the unwary.

Yeah. Unfortunately a trading platform's performance problems can't be solved by throwing more hardware at it. The backend must be optimised for the task. Even with MtGox's current "uncovered orders" scheme I think a properly engineered backend could handle tens of thousands of update operations per second on relatively modest hardware, and still keep everything in sequence. I'm no professional coder but I know a few. I'd hazard a guess that the biggest problem is that MagicalTux doesn't really want to hire a team of actual experts to redesign and reimplement the engine from scratch. He's fairly competent himself but his expertise is not in designing these kinds of high performance production systems.

Even if he does, this really isn't a job for one man anymore.

30 minutes since 6 confirmations and still not showing up at gox
30? waiting 150 minutes since 7 confirmations.. got 21 confirmations now Why would anyone want to be SENDING btc to Gox?!? Just a precaution for now. Right now I'm just making sure I have the ability to trade if need be. Yeah, I just registered for 4 other exchanges!! This blows. I think MtGox is slowing things down in response to DDoS attacks - there is no volume to support such lags. They are doing a "controlled crash" - and, damn! Just when I was getting used to buying the DDoS dips.

so, while the price is fine, how is Instawallet doing ..?
"INSTAWALLET SERVICE NOTICE
The Instawallet service is suspended indefinitely until we are able to develop an alternative architecture.
Our database was fraudulently accessed, due to the very nature of Instawallet it is impossible to reopen the service as-is.
In the next few days we are going to open the claim process for Instawallet balance holders to claim the funds they had stored before the service interruption"
and bitcoin-central?
"Error 107 (net::ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR): Error de protocolo SSL"
what happened?

Just when I was getting used to buying the DDoS dips. There was no DDoS attack, right? "Due to high volume trading at the moment, there is a lag in trading and order cancellation." I wouldn't be surprised if they slow things down to stem panic selling.....trade curbing mechanism similar to NYSE circuit breakers.
