I was having reliability problems with my Batch 4 S5 that just arrived this week, so someone suggested I update the firmware with the latest (Jan 7) release on the website. Ever since I updated with that firmware I have had troubles. At first I had problems with one blade not coming up, then I did get it working about only at about 800Gh (default settings), and now almost 3 hours later I am down to 680Gh.

Does anyone have the original firmware available for download?

If you had batch 4 then you had the new firmware for sure.  My Batch 3 ants had it already and I received them like 5 days after the firmware was released.  Bitmain was on top of it there. 

One of mine does what you describe after I change the freq.  If I change the freq I have to do a power cycle to get it to hash full speed.  It doesn't show any X's or anything else in the GUI to indicate a problem but it just won't get up to full speed.  I can tell pretty soon though by just watching the WU number.  If it tops out around 8k then I know the hashrate will never get to full speed.  At this point though I can say that it basically does it every single time I change the freq.  But as soon as I power cycle it, I see the WU number go past 10k or so within the first minute and then I know it will get to full hashing speed.

I have to say though, these batch 3 S5 units are way more stable than my batch 2 S3's.  Those S3's have been a pain in my butt since day one.  They don't get the speeds they advertised, they need to be rebooted regularly or their hashrate sinks to about 60% of normal, and sometimes when they reboot they can't even see the boards.  They have required constant baby sitting and I would have sold them if I didn't feel bad about just passing that problem on to someone else.  My S1 has been so remarkably stable I was excited by the S3 but then those were so remarkably temperamental I was hesitant to get these S5's.  But now that I have them and they have been hashing for 5 days or so I am a happy miner again.  These things seem very stable, they get up to speed a lot faster then the S3's, and once they are doing their thing they really don't need baby sitting.  Very nice.

I'm getting 30 and 34 C on my S5 atm. It's actually running a wee bit cooler than my S3s. How?

I live in Ottawa, Canada and it's darn cold here right now. I have all my miners on a cheap 3 tiered plastic shelving unit near an open window. Between the open window and the miners is a large Sunbeam box fan I got for about $30 at Walmart.

For the S5, I added a second 2000RPM Coolermaster fan that i had laying around from my GPU mining days. I also got a small $9 Sunbeam fan at WalMart. I have it suspended with cable ties over top of the S5 to force excess cold air (coming from the box fan) into the top off the miner. Each shelf has open slots. So the air flows thru and the miner and out the bottom instead of rebounding back up thru the miner.  


EDIT: For the summer, i will use my portable room A'C. It will be placed between the Box fan and the miners' shelf in such a way that the box fan forces the AC's air directly at the miners.

then use one of those silent, tower heat exchangers (normally used for water cooling and about 900mm high) to cool the oil.

How about submerging it in liquid nitrogen?

The process of running a network cable to my garage where I plan on setting up my S5 seems to be more hassle then it's worth because the location will not be permanent. I know that wifi is not recommended but I hear some good things about this item:

I will call my friend he is a cooling engineer he knows a lot about air pressure and airflow and all that stuff. and see what he says.

Or just buy a fish tank and submerge it in pure mineral oil then no fans are needed.

As others have mentioned (below), you can't create a closed system with energy input without things heating up. The picture you linked was an mATX kit which required a 4x120mm radiator and pump to cool 700w NON 24/7 load. So for every S5 you've got another $200-$250 of components, ignoring the tank and oil.

You can get away with ~1800-2000rpm fans if you can keep your ambient low enough, there's quite a large difference from 1350 to 2000rpm in terms of airflow.

You can get away with ~1800-2000rpm fans if you can keep your ambient low enough, there's quite a large difference from 1350 to 2000rpm in terms of airflow.

With you Artic Cooling (74 cfm) if you do a push pull setup, you can get steady 875 gh at 275 mhz.
The temps for me is around 59-55 so its enough low.

You are right to hear good things about that, but if it is going to work for you, then you can as well simply get a cheaper one and configure (the cheaper one) as a repeater for your main router, which will accomplish the same thing you are trying to achieve with that expensive router.

Received the two S5 this afternoon (batch  4), definitely a quick shipment (thanks Bitmain and the Postal Service).  I replaced the single push fans with S3 push/pull pairs using 6" 4pin PWM adapter cables and brought them up one at a time. Doesn't appear there's a need for a top cover since the pull fan grabs virtually all the push flow, very little escapes via the top.

The file system installed is the latest (Wed Jan 7 14:05:02 CST 2015), but CGminer is still 4.8.0.  The units are on a free standing shelf about 37" high with the back-to-back CX750M power supplies sandwiched between them.  I set the clocks to 312.5MHz and one S5 reported board temps of 51/50 (fans 2640/2640), the other 53/48 (fans 2640/2760).  The average hash rates report as ~1,020GH/s.  Sent an email to EastHash to see if they might have an S5 compatible CGminer 4.7.0 in the works.

I haven't tried the 4.9.0 CGminer yet, but if the miners remain stable, I'll give it a whirl.  They've been running roughly five hours now.

PS.  Am also giving 306.25MHz a try (maybe also 300MHz), would like to get closer to 1TH/s, hopefully a good round PSU conserving number.  

PPS.  Room temp is roughly 65F estimated via laser gun thermometer.

Finally settled on a clock frequency of 306.25MHz which gives aprox 1010GH/s.  They've been running w/o mishap for near two days now and so decided to install the 4.9.0 CGminer.  It's now in and hopefully they'll continue to run uneventfully.  The reported temps are 50/49 (fans 2640/2640) and 52/51 (fans 2640/2640), aprox ambient temp is 64F.

By what method did you put cgminer 4.9.0 on? You've probably replaced some antminer specific code which isn't on the main branch.

With another round taking over 10+ hours (this is the 5th one in 4 days), I decided to take one of my S3's off line and put the delta fan that comes with the S5 on it to do a little testing.  It's currently running between 3,480 and 3,600 RPM, and there's no screaming.  Just a big whooshing.  Not too much different from the two Silverstone 141's (running at about 2,000 RPM) on put in push/pull on my S5's.  This leads me to initially conclude that part of the screaming of the fans on the S5 (caused by the directional fins on the back of the fan?) is due to there not having a housing around the S5.  I also used one of these guards in the front (highly recommended) that may also be helping to reduce the screaming: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DBW8QZ0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1   Anyone else try?

Oh, and the S3 temps are 42 C in a room at 90 F (at 250M).
It only drop to 41 C at 206.25M and 225M.

I used WinSCP and PuTTY (chmod +x cgminer; mv cgminer /usr/bin; /etc/init.d/cgminer.sh restart), however, it could be I just didn't leave it long enough to settle.  I rebooted to restore 4.8.0 and it also seems to be settling around 990GH/s.  Seems odd since I could have sworn they previously reached general vicinity of 1010GH/s within two hours.  Guess will have to play with it some more, but seems like 4.9.0 is probably off the hook anyway.

Funny -- with 4.8.0 I ran the clocks back up to 350MHz, let them settle down, and got near enough as advertized.  Then dropped to 312.5, let them settle and got neighborhood 320GH/s.  Reinstalled 4.9.0, they settled OK, so dropped down to my target 306.25 and they came in near enough the expected 310GH/s.  Guess it's time to leave 'em alone!

That's how hot my blades are (at least right now). Seems to be OK for several days with 1.3 Th and 0.02% HWE at 400 frequency...

You can find in BM1384's datasheet that maximum operation temperature for this chip is 125℃, so 60-70℃ should not be such a problem...

Anyway, the lower temperature - the better...
