... a new company is preparing to launch quantum computers that will mine bitcoins 1000x faster than ASICs...
I just heard about this. Is it true? I read about it on https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=99497.msg2516240#msg2516240. Internet, must be true!

In light of this news, as an act of charity, I will purchase everyone's Bitcoins for $1 USD each.

We could also be part of a Matrix, where our bodies are harvested and grown by machines. This is just getting ridiculous.

Since you insist, here's another speculative angle.
Maybe they took hashes offline because they realized they could freeze the current difficulty for a bit while they work on getting the new boards ready.

That makes little sense. The difficulty is not adjusted once every 2 weeks, it is adjusted once every 2016 blocks. So if they "froze" the current difficulty and got tons of new board online, then the difficulty is going to rise in a day or so instead of 5, neutralizing the effect. The difficulty increase will be a bit less, yes, but that's not worth it when you have BFL & Avalon starting to ship more, and with the lost mining power.

At the current block discovery rate, these 2016 blocks are going to take 3-4 weeks. In the last hour we've had 2 blocks found, the last one was 45 mins ago. I'm not discounting your point, it would seem to be of limited value, but you have to admit that the timing feels right.

Hmm... won't that make the dividends take much longer than usual today?

What were back on topic And I was going to let these shenanigans go on to the next page What's the topic? Hard to sort it from those nasty shenanigans I just pity a future investor who turns up in 6 months time doing research and has 700 pages of this to go through rather than the 376 I forced myself through. Although I have to say, when you read "Fast-forward" style, you get a reward of a friedcat post every hour. In real-time, this thread is a lot less exciting, no disrepect intended, I'm eagerly awaiting my first real-time friedcat post
