1021  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Taproot proposal on: January 16, 2021, 10:10:43 AM
Come on, then! Let's get 0.21.1 underway so that this very much needed update can get finally activated.
I see in the release notes many Tor improvements too, which is good. Cool.
1022  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Price on: January 16, 2021, 10:00:10 AM
The price of bitcoins is expected to adjust inorder to keep mining profitable, whether they're are getting 50BTC per block or 6.25BTC or none at all, when all bitcoins have been mined.
So essentially what this means is that Bitcoin price will keep on increasing? So that mining can remain profitable? So then what happens in 2140 when no more new Bitcoin is introduced? How can miners mine profitably?

Welcome!
I see you are really new here. There's no such thing as the bitcoin price will keep rising. You really have to understand its mechanics.
Mining is only a part of the game.
Start here and then you can spend days on the topic. Good luck!

BREAKING: Financial powerhouse Goldman Sachs to offer #crypto custody as early as 2021!

https://www.coindesk.com/goldman-sachs-to-enter-crypto-market-soon-with-custody-play-source

Wait... Crypto custody is a case of not-your-keys, right?

The thing about custody is that it's guaranteed, often backed by insurance.
But insurance will never cover the value of all the assets. Custody with insurance is a scam
1024  Economy / Economics / Re: Warren Buffett & "Rat Poison" on: January 16, 2021, 09:52:00 AM
Passive income can come in many forms like renting some real estate, saving accounts, dividends and the list goes on. Even in the crypto world if you would like to take some risk you can get some interest on your crypto holdings on both CeFi (Nexo, BlockFi...) and DeFi (Compound, AAVE...) platforms.
There are definitely some ways to earn while you sleep.

Taking risks to make money is not passive income. That was my point.

You rent your real estate, that's not passive income. That's just another business which you'll have to keep your eyes on because the tenants always carry some risks.

Managing your risks = business. That's not passive income. Now you should realize everything you do to make money has its own risks that means it is not passive.
Risk is always involved! Unless you want to patronize me like Robert Kiyosaki would do about the difference between assets/liabilities...
https://www.richdad.com/what-are-assets-and-liabilities
Whatever form of passive income you may think of, will always imply risks! Even when you cross the road, you may accidentally die.

1026  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2021-01-13 Reuters - ECB's Lagarde calls for regulating btc's funny business on: January 15, 2021, 07:28:14 AM
The economy is yet to face the real consequences of this health crisis: as of now, most European countries are supporting companies, entrepreneurs, workers and professionals who got affected by closures and lockdowns. I don't want to be Madame Lagarde when those aids are over as hyperinflation will dissolve the Eurozone.
1027  Economy / Economics / Re: Warren Buffett & "Rat Poison" on: January 15, 2021, 07:24:40 AM
Warren Buffet said:"If you don't find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die."! I respect that!

I don't know what you understand from that quote but I think is misunderstood.

I believe what he really means here is "You will work until you die because it is impossible to make money while you sleep."

It also depends on the definition of "making money" everybody gets it differently I guess.
Passive income can come in many forms like renting some real estate, saving accounts, dividends and the list goes on. Even in the crypto world if you would like to take some risk you can get some interest on your crypto holdings on both CeFi (Nexo, BlockFi...) and DeFi (Compound, AAVE...) platforms.

for that, I need to find something better than some paper in old books......
I think paper remains one of the best ways to back up your seed phrase.

There is an abundance of products on the market revolving around backing your seed phrase up in some configuration of metalwork, be that tiles in a holder, stamping letters on plates, etching letters on plates, punching holes through templates, etc. Some of them perform very well in terms of durability and longevity, others not so much. (https://jlopp.github.io/metal-bitcoin-storage-reviews/) They all come with a cost, some being very expensive for what they are.

While these certainly feel safer than using paper, I'd argue they are not necessarily so. They might survive your house burning down, but what if you can't find them again in the rubble? What if a flood or hurricane (depending on your location) carries them a few kilometers away? It doesn't matter if they survive if you can't find them again. And they are no less likely to be stolen or identified for what they are than a paper back up if a thief stumbles across them (in fact, probably more so, since they are obviously something valuable).

I have only ever used paper for my back ups, but crucially, I have multiple back ups spread across multiple different geographical locations. If my house burns down it is not an issue as far as my bitcoin go, as I can recover my seed phrase from one of my other back ups. If you do want to use metal, then just go to a local hardware store and buy a piece of stainless steel you can etch your words in to yourself for less than $10. It is cheaper than any of the products linked above, and it also avoids giving your personal details over to a company known for manufacturing seed phrase back ups, which could be very dangerous as we have seen from the recent Ledger leak.
Great o_e_l_e_o, that's a lot of necessary food for thought! Wink I'm not in a rush and I'll start researching what my best setup could be. In the meanwhile, after having done yet another factory reset, I need to solve the wallet and backup puzzle. Which wallet to use (electrum on android looks silly to me) and how to safely store the seed. I see there are already some useful tips in the late comments. Thanks everyone

Hi everyone! Great service, there's always space for new players here.
I  have one question, will you be considering adding more cryptocurrency pairs in the near future? I see you only have a selected few, are you in a start-up phase, and what to see how things go?
1030  Bitcoin / Press / 2021-01-13 Reuters - ECB's Lagarde calls for regulating btc's funny business on: January 14, 2021, 09:38:30 AM
Quote
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde called on Wednesday for global regulation of Bitcoin, saying the digital currency had been used for money laundering activities in some instances and that any loopholes needed to be closed.
https://www.reuters.com/article/crypto-currency-ecb/reuters-next-ecbs-lagarde-calls-for-regulating-bitcoins-funny-business-idUSL1N2JO0RM

Madame Christine Lagarde is afraid of Bitcoin: good! That is how I read her rants and if I was a bitcoin entrepreneur I would give the shit back at her!
1031  Economy / Economics / Re: Warren Buffett & "Rat Poison" on: January 14, 2021, 09:34:07 AM
Most people who are successful and old age are difficult to accept new things, maybe that's what happened to Warren Buffett. But I can understand
why not everyone accepts Bitcoin, because not everyone understands Bitcoin. Maybe Buffett has a hard time understanding Bitcoin, so he's not
interested in investing in something he simply doesn't understand. But what pissed me off against Warren Buffett are some of his pretty harsh
words against Bitcoin, which makes me as a Bitcoin believer quite hurt to hear it. Buffett shouldn't have said such harsh things if he really didn't
like Bitcoin.

It doesn't matter whether they are successful or not. Old people have an aversion to new technology. A few years back, while trying to popularize Bitcoin I found out that the elderly are the lest interested in new innovations such as Bitcoin. The younger people were at least ready to listen, but most of the oldies would drop out of the conversation within one or two minutes. Mr. Buffet is 90 years old, and I don't really expect him to approve new technology.
Come on that's an overstatement: I can't believe you have never witnessed any tech-savvy old-timer! I know many actually, and a few a of them got into bitcoin thanks to my explanations and some of them know bitcoin better than me now, given their past background in IT and economics. WB represents another financial world that can't recognize bitcoin, just yet.

-snip-
That's pretty secure then. I assume you used QR codes to send transactions back and forth?
Yes, that's exactly what I did  Smiley Good then, I'm happy I was able to build a decent storage mechanism without relying on a fancy hardware wallet. I can start from scratch again and reconfigure it. The last thing to mention is the importance of the backup seeds: for that, I need to find something better than some paper in old books......
1033  Economy / Gambling / Re: 🔶 YOLOdice.com 🔶 play&invest BTC ETH LTC DOGE on: January 14, 2021, 09:22:28 AM
It's just mere luck, and long-term speaking, players that keep playing (whatever their strategy is) will end up losing. I was one of them for example: on yolodice at some point in May I was up 0.40btc for more than a month and then I went back to -0.72btc. Draw your own conclusions.

1035  Economy / Gambling / Re: 🔶 YOLOdice.com 🔶 play&invest BTC ETH LTC DOGE on: January 13, 2021, 08:58:07 AM
Does anyone noticed almost all investments on yolodice are down a lot atm? Bitcoin, down from 182 btc invested to 129 btc atm, ETH, it was 1.3k ETH but now only 800 ETH investment, Doge, it was around 72millions doge invested, but now onky 39 millions doge. Seems big investors have withdrew their money and exchange it to fiat/usd
Yeah already noticed it and most likely it is related to people cashing out to fiat. Between January 6 and January 9, 2021 that drop occurred in BTC for example (not sure about the other coins) and I find it normal personally. Once the price drops or stabilise, it will increase again Wink

Guilty partially here,,, not that my investments were a big part of the yolodice bankroll but I divested a few days ago again. My bankroll has not been doing well for a while and I wanted to gamble back my losses, hence the divest. Also now,,, just want to hold on for a bit to avoid the gambling temptation while price volatility goes crazy.

All this is short term guys,,, long term the bankroll goes up for sure. Watch for next wager competition;)
If you compare the market conditions with the different bankrolls for every coin you will certainly notice how they follow the market. I believe it's unavoidable to have that: if the price will start to get more stable, you will notice an increment in the bankroll too.
Also, if the price will go down more, you will see more players coming to the platform because players tend to associate a lower price with higher risk-taking endeavors.
I follow bitcoin casinos since 2012 and I have always seen it everywhere.

This is going to be the Bitcoin chart. You heard it from me first.
Your game to find out what that is.
I might give a small tip
We are on the right track. Next target is Brk.a
@ssmc2, do you remember?  Smiley

Warren Buffett is a smart badass otherwise he would have never accomplished what he has done so far with his wealth management firm. Nonetheless, when he talks about bitcoin he's clueless: I don't know if it's because he didn't spend some time researching about it or he simply can't understand it.
I hope he will be well and alive when the value of a single bitcoin will overtake his BRK.A: that would be a great day to watch!
I actually predicted it already here

I was using a SamsungGalaxy S9: no root, updated to the latest manufacturer firmware, no biometrics ever activated and encrypted from the start (I guess using samsung knox).
Did you perform a factory reset on it before you started? Did you keep it permanently airgapped?

When you say you "guess using samsung knox", it sounds like you didn't actually encrypt the wallet, but just relied on the phone not allowing access to data after startup until you enter your password/PIN. If I'm not mistaken, Samsung phones can have their login screen disabled from your Samsung account in case people forget their password/PIN, so that's not exactly secure. Better to use a proper encryption program.

Where did you store the phone when you were not using it?

Did you keep the device airgapped even when making transactions?
Yes, a factory reset was the first thing I have done. Then I completely wiped out and/or disabled other apps and bloatware whenever possible. Never started Bluetooth and connection option (not even nfc).
After that I enabled the Samsung Secure which basically encrypts the entire internal storage when the Phone is restarted.
The phone was on my desk all the time, and nobody ever bothered to use it. (also because it's all cracked on the glass).
