1021  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [Payout Updates] Bitcoinica site is taken offline for security investigation on: July 01, 2012, 03:42:16 PM

Are you going to ignore my question? I have a few friends in London, can they pay you a visit and inquire about the missing funds? Genjix, answer this question clearly for me, is Zhoutong responsible for my lost bitcoins or YOU are responsible for my lost? I thought Zhoutong at first because he lied to all of us and based on that I targeted him, but since I see you are making payouts and you seem to represent bitcoinica now, I now ask YO
u.

ONE LAST TIME, When will you payout my bitcoins? TOTAL = 16,000 BTC

Maria.

Maria: as speaking for everyone on this forum, Shut the fuck up.
+100

Yep, Maria, stop this nonsense. They have no obligation to meet you or your friends whether virtual or real. If you are not happy you can email them, you can write them to their registered address in NZ and/or you can sue them. You also can whine here. If you really want to go after them personally you sue them and try to pierce the veil of limited liability.

Overstep this and you should be in jail.

1022  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [Payout Updates] Bitcoinica site is taken offline for security investigation on: July 01, 2012, 03:03:17 AM
What do you mean by "you". We were not even involved in Bitcoinica during that time. We did not move to rackspace VPS. I don't know what game you are playing, but I know that you know this.

Yep, we all know that. The problem is that when one buys a biz (or part of it) one gets it's assets and liabilities and comedy value too.

I only notarised the signed document for the formation of Bitcoinica the day before the hack. This is public information, yet somehow you are implying false things which is very sly and strange. The only thing we are guilty of is that Patrick's personal email got added access to critical infrastructure without his knowledge, and that his email was compromised. And now it is us that bears the brunt of processing payouts.

We all know that too. It is quite damn embarrassing, nevertheless. And here people were quite understanding for long time. And I was the first one here to come out and say that only those who do nothing do not make mistakes. Now I kind of forced to add that those who do effectively nothing about releasing significant funds to many people must be doing something badly wrong.

You know this. Yet you seem intent to just make fun of me. Are you bitter or something? Did I burn you? It's honestly pathetic considering that we hung out in London a few times, you seemed a cool person and I vouched for your trusted character to others.

Make fun of you? Well yes and no. Not really you personally (however, it is you are the one who responds with personal attacks).

You are here effectively the spokesman of Bitcoinica LP, so in my posts here "you" usually means "Bitcoinica LP". But think about it, what else here left for us here to do? No seriously! Just cracked a innocent light joke or two and you immediately respond with ad homini attack and moved on to "we are not friends anymore" stance. Whether my character is trusted or not, I am not the one here who holds millions of other people money.

Bitter? Yep, to some degree. I suppose like many others here. One of the companies I was involved with has happened to have some small'iish 4 digit amount held there for quite some time now. While it is not much, that money were earmarked to be used to pay for print of Bitcoin Magazine #1, and now #2 and given that "we hanged out" and "trusted character" and that people on our side were in direct contact with Bitcoinica it tastes rather bitter to not have a single reply on our small 'ish claim in 50+ days. We must be on a "untrusted scammers, to not be paid out a single penny and to ignore" list there in Bitcoinica. This makes no sense. Would it explain some bitterness?

However small this amount is, it adds up, we had to rise some finance for Bitcoin Magazine and sell some tiny amount of equity (less than one percent) to finance print of #2. This equity could have been not sold and it easily can worth 10 times the amount a few month down the road, once we are in B&N stores and land a few more distribution deals. I am sure you (Bitcoinica LP) are damaging many other parties as well. This little example illustrates how damages you cause can be many times more than amounts you hold hostage.

I wish you have taken Zhou's offer to sort most of this in one week instead of doing all this "processing" for about two month now (and counting) with no end in sight.

So why such an overreaction and ad homini attacks in response to some innocent jokes? Do you really think that you (Bitcoinica LP) can hold hostage millions of dollars and your victims shall not even crack a joke at your expense?

Just to summarise. I am not attacking you personally (it seems you do attack me personally, however). I am, like others, irritated by the way Bitcoinica LP handles this and how long it takes.
1023  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Worth it to get bank loan to mine? on: June 30, 2012, 07:53:22 AM
Been watching the prices the whole year and it's been stable at $5-6, don't see much of a risk there. The difficulty rating will definitely be going up, but I will have close to 1 terahash or more if I take out a loan so I'm no small fry.

You do not get it. IF BFL deliver on their promises, then with 1 terahash you WILL be a small fry.
1024  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [Payout Updates] Bitcoinica site is taken offline for security investigation on: June 30, 2012, 07:19:04 AM
Let's have a look at this in the context.
the post immediately above my post:
OK - so........... I got a mail that my account is verified as accurate - but nothing but crickets after.

I was apparently under the mistaken impression that meant I was to see some kind of funds returned?

Again - wtf? Kinda irritating because now I'm checking the damn inbox again, and I really don't want to check if the check isn't coming in the mail. Tongue

Or, are we doing the - communicate one line of email and then nothing for yet another month. This game is getting tiring Sad

same for me, checking emails several times per day, without any news any more.. very disappointing

Bitcoinica LP crew is definitely not businessmen at heart. Should have set up a blog, with daily updates, put adsense ad on it. They would by now make more money out that blog that it was stolen. LOL

This has got to be the stupidest post I've read. Why would be blogging instead of processing payouts? And putting ads on there? I'd rather not be a businessman then. Thanks for the bad advice.
...
stupid is:
- to have no security concept at all
- stupid ist to get no backups at all
...

Thank you, bremer-btc-user.

@genjix:
This is very rich for YOU and rest of your gang to call ANYONE here stupid. Real pro!. And no, it was not an advise, it was a joke. You are too smart apparently to get it.

I quit advising Bitcoinica the moment my advise to use colocation instead of linode back in September 2011 was
ignored. I have not been advising anyone in Bitcoinica since then. So please do not even for a second imagine that I am advising you here.

Funnily enough, after you guys got owned by linode, you (Bitcoinica) have "fixed" it by moving to rackspace VPS's, GENIUS! (yea for real smart ones clarification: this means IDIOTS!). Do not you see now all the hilarity of this?

P.S. Ohh and by the way "LOL" means "laughing out loud", often used on interwebs as substitute for smiles and it is usually indication that there is a joke somewhere close by.
1025  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Will ASIC mining destroy Bitcoin? on: June 29, 2012, 05:26:54 PM
Then don't buy it.

Sure, but this doesn't solve the problem that a bad guy will get the mining ASIC at a much lower $ - GHash/s ratio.

But this solves the problem that bad guys could get large number of the mining CPU's GPUP's and FPGA's at whatever price.
1026  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Will ASIC mining destroy Bitcoin? on: June 29, 2012, 09:21:41 AM
as soon as one realises that:

1. Good for CPU  miners != Good for Bitcoin
and
2. Good for GPU  miners != Good for Bitcoin
and
3. Good for FPGA miners != Good for Bitcoin
and
4. The higher the Bitcoin nework difficulty the more secure Bitcoin network is and therefore
Migration to ASIC mining and combined Bitcoin hashing power measured in ExoHashes as opposed to present TeraHashes  = Good for Bitcoin.

So if you want to whine about ASIC's try to be honest and not bring  "good of Bitcoin" into it. Go and whine like "ohh by October my FPGA will not pay for itself, my investment went baad, gotta go to work for Wallmart again!"

1028  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BITCOIN MAGAZINE ARRIVED! on: June 28, 2012, 07:52:38 PM
I shipped a few more copies to UK today. Should be delivered by Monday/Tuesday to most.
I bought a 3-issue subscription last night and I'm UK based. Do you think mine was amongst them?

yep, you'll get yours by monday/tuesday, most likely

1031  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: [Conspiracy theory] Have blocks of bitcoin a second purpose? on: June 28, 2012, 12:25:30 AM
As rjk said. However, it worth noting that Bitcoin hashing work can be "reused" by parasitic (or symbiotic) merged mining. Namecoin is one example of this. But hopefully eventually there will be more of those, all the notarial services, deeds, contract time stamping, potentially even some voting schemes maybe. Imagine that you can develop some software and piggy back almost "for free" to Bitcoin hashing backbone measured in ExoHashes by then.
1032  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: June 28, 2012, 12:16:11 AM
As zerohedge crowd have been absolutely correctly commenting on recently. Prices of equities and bonds and many other asset classes do not trade based on fundamentals but based on current level of central bank insanity.

Dow, for example, these days has nothing to do with number of cars, potash, iphones or CPU's or other goods and services produced and consumed. It has, however, everything do to with and only with how much QE Ben and Marv have pushed out of their wasoo during every given week. Trade that. Or alternatively, just buy some bitcoins and you can start ignoring reality for the next decade or so.  Grin

I had 800 back when we were playing into block races in our MMC pool.

1034  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: MTGOX down? on: June 23, 2012, 05:49:12 PM
Let me put some oil in the fire:

gentlemen - you are seeing mtgox folding

Could be this, could be just some technical issue. The thing with gox is: you never know whether you are being goxed or foxed.

The best strategy here IMO is to not play. It is really fun to be just an observer. And I am speaking from experience here. It is  much less fun watching Bitcoinica debacle because Bitcoin Magazine has slightly more than 1000$ in limbo there.

1035  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Magazine Issue #2 Ad Space Now On Sale! on: June 23, 2012, 08:36:20 AM
Last call for issue #2 ad placement! There is still time to get in!

1036  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Barnes & Noble accepts Bitcoin Magazine on: June 23, 2012, 04:25:43 AM
Well, their quarterly reports to investors do not say anything about them losing money on magazines.

What I know for certain is that distributors present magazines to store reps (perhaps there are guys who representing more than one store). Those store reps do make choice on which magazines to order. Chances are that a single word passed from front line guys to such a rep about customers asking a specific magazine, would ensure the magazine order by a specific store.

Also, by the way they structure the biz terms, they just cannot lose money on magazines. All the risks are on publishers.

I suppose some people just lie habitually in attempt to appear more smart or more important than they are. At the same, time I must admit that my initial response was worded too strongly and I do not know all the relevant facts to be absolutely sure in what I said, specifically about that particular store. That is why I have removed that response.

Maybe someone who actually worked at one of B&N could tell us how this works exactly. I am all ears in this case.

For those who think that print is dead here is what I have to say:

Thanks everyone. Feels good to finally shut the trolls up.

I STILL HAVENT RECEIVED MY F'$§%&*§!!! MAGAZINE!!

And you're not the only one either!

best part is how we should just shut up about it, oh and not be compensated either.

support@bitconmagazine.net for customer support. They will sort all the problems.

Edit: Ohh it is Dansker, nevermind then... he never will be happy.

1038  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Barnes & Noble accepts Bitcoin Magazine on: June 22, 2012, 01:10:54 PM
Congratulations. I was pretty skeptical at first whether or not this project would fizzle into nothingness. I'm happy to be proved wrong.

keep it up, i'll purchase many from the store in durham, north cackalacky

Make sure you stop in and ask them when they'll be receiving it for the shelves.  This will increase the chances that it gets to that store!  (at least I'm assuming it will)

It will increase chances of getting BM into this specific store. As soon as we sign the contract, the distributor will be presenting Bitcoin Magazine to store's procurement managers, and those will decide whether they will order them and how many, depending on availability of space on their newsstands and level of interest and demography of their customers. So those who bug them and demand the magazine will most likely get that store stocking Bitcoin Magazine when the time comes.

1039  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BITCOIN MAGAZINE ARRIVED! on: June 22, 2012, 09:50:31 AM

B&N saga is just beginning. It is not an instant thing. We have an agreement in principle with them and negotiating a few finer points now. We expect to have signed exclusive 2 year long contract with them imminently. We do not know yet which stores it will go in and we do not know yet how many copies they will request us to print. Could be 10k, could be 100k, could change over time. They told us "your title is a bookstore title", whatever that means. I am rounding up finances to be able to print 20k of #3.

One thing is known, you should not expect to see BM  on the shelves before 1st of September, it will be either #3 or #4. This is just how long it takes. But still go now to their stores and bug them and tell them to make sure that they stock it once it becomes available. It helps a lot.

No guarantees here, but advertisers do take notice that you can book now up to 6 month of the most valuable advertising real estate in BM (some have done it already) and potentially get huge exposure in B&N distributed issues at silly low prices. One advertiser, for example bought some full page ads in the very beginning for 3 first issues for some champ change, like 150$. And now he will get not just #1 ads, but #2 and #3 ads too (potentially with big print and in B&N stores). Likewise you still can book ads for up to 6 month in advance now for just a few thousand dollars (we even give decent discount on long term deals). Some advertisers have seen this opportunity and locked in the most valuable spots for many month in advance. As soon as we know how many copies we need to print to cover B&N order, the ad prices are going to skyrocket again, most likely.

There also will be minor pricing changes. The prices in stores will be higher than what one can get on subscription or direct from us. Overall price of one copy will also be increased slightly for some regions. Naturally, people who subscribed already are not affected by any of this.

Also it is highly likely that starting from #2 we will print in UK on the same presses that Wired and their ilk are being printed on. We will have much more robust logistic solution and shipping to both EU and North America will be much quicker starting with #2.
