1181  Economy / Economics / Re: Is renting an inevitable waste of money? on: February 12, 2023, 11:56:46 PM
Calling renting an inevitable was of money is quite a narrow view of reality I think. I mean what would the world be without the option to rent places? I am not only looking at it from the perspective of going on vacation, but being able to rent a place significantly increases global workforce mobility for instance. If you get to work in a dream job but you are only willing to do it for say 3 to 5 years in a place in a foreign country, buying a house there might not be possible nor feasible financially. Being able to rent a place is the perfect solution. Think about all those shared places as well and how students organize themselves these days in order to reduce individual cost. All of those advantages come with renting. While you do incur a certain kind of opportunity cost due to renting, you open up a different range of options for you at the same time. You can quickly switch places, you can increase your personal lifestyle if that is of more importance to you than owning property at a certain point of your life. The generalization of it being a waste of money goes too far I believe. I know what you are trying to say but there is a reason why option carry true financial value and renting gives you options, hence is not only a cost factor.
1182  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread 2022/2023 on: February 12, 2023, 11:43:35 PM
There is only the Liverpool - Everton game left on this week. Diaz is still injured but Firmino's condition is questionable now. Maybe we could see him in the lineup at least by entering the game in the second half. Liverpool really need some improvement in their scoring skills now. Injuries are a factor to prevent them from doing a good job as well.

But they need to try to improve their defending as well. I can't say that their offense is the only problem. They conceded 3 goals from even Wolves as you know.
Liverpool performed very badly in the Premier League. Since beating Leicester City 2-1 on New Year's Eve, the Reds have lost three and drawn one in their next four matches. The result left Liverpool slumped to 10th place in the standings with a difference of 11 points from the Champions League zone.

Liverpool's mission rose to the challenge when Everton visited Anfield, Mohamed Salah and friends appeared to be dominant after losing only once in the last 27 meetings against their city rivals. However, the Toffees impressed under new manager Sean Dyche after shockingly beating top flight Arsenal 1-0. I think Liverpool have to win the game later if they want to really come back

This game might be more important for all the Liverpool fans that they think right now. I just noticed that if Liverpool doesn't win this game, it is five consecutive games without a win and they already lost three out of the last four Premier League games. Now if had to make an educated guess, depending on how bad this game against Everton might perhaps go for Liverpool, if this game ends in a disaster I think we might have seen Klopp being the manager for Liverpool for the last time.

Do you guys agree or do you think that he is still untouchable? I just don't think that is the case anymore. They have some deeper problems right now and this is not just being unlucky for a couple of weeks. The one good aspect for Klopp is that they are a few games behind most teams, but still that doesn't make up for the poor performance so far because who knows if they are going to win any of those games anyway.
1183  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Italian League Prediction Thread (Serie A) on: February 12, 2023, 11:37:20 PM
I'm not very hopeful for Juventus, but there is a situation where the top-ranked teams are also falling. This score can be closed to the top six, Juventus can snoop. Especially Milan have lost a lot of points in a very bad situation in the last weeks, it is not possible to maintain their place. Juventus started to draw a good look with this win, let's see if they can provide this in the sequel, it seems difficult to me.
Slowly but surely Juventus seems to be getting goals and wins in their last two matches, hopefully Juventus can return to the top five at the top of the standings, even though it is very difficult to do at least Juventus have to try with all their might and the efforts they put in must be very hard.

I thought that Juventus might fall into a very deep hole after they found themselves to get deducted 15 points from their current standings. Now maybe it was still not the final punch against them because they knew that winning Serie A this season would have been difficult either way as Napoli is just out of this world in the Serie A so far.

Now I think that Juventus still has a slight chance to make it to the top 4. There are still a couple of games against their direct competitors for those upper ranks and it wouldn't be the first time that Juventus climbs up the ladder slowly but surely with a lot of effort and some stable defensive games. Taking their games home with just 1-0 is what they are also known for. I guess in about six weeks we will have an answer whether or not Juventus can make a little miracle happen. They do have players of enough quality to do so and it is surprising that they haven't been performing more stable throughout the season anyway.

Whatever, now I think qualifying for an international tournament is all what counts for them or otherwise they might also have trouble to keep their squad together for next season.
1184  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: UEFA Europa League 2022/23 Season on: February 12, 2023, 11:32:18 PM
Casemiro will be available fresh for the game against Barcelona it will be the first game since he left La Liga against a Spanish side
Rashford should just be in the right position so he can always score those goals
Garnacho and Sancho can both come up at the wings to create chances
With this combination things looking amazing for the Manchester United in first leg of this round which is going to be play at Barcelona and Casemiro and Rashford both are key players for them with this deadly combination they already achieve good successes if they are able to handle this all and having something positive then surely things could be at the top for the Manchester United in long run for their success in Premier League and next year's Champions League because right now they are having fair chance for staying into top four and having good results in all other three competitions which are they involved and doing good job under Erik ten Hag in this season after having poor start.

I wasn't sure whether this competition is going to be interesting or not. If Manchester United performed as badly as they did in the beginning of the season, I think it wouldn't have been such an interesting game. Now that Barcelona is performing so well and Manchester United is also doing quite well, this game is going to be a nice one to watch for sure.

The bad thing about it is that they are meeting so early on. Both teams would have had a positive impact on the competition throughout the entire tournament. Anyway, one is going to be kicked out and it is quite a difficult call who that is going to be. I believe that Barcelona is going to make it. Their defense is so strong and in my opinion that is probably going to be the key.
It is going to be a torque of war for both Manchester united and Barcelona on Thursday, Manchester united won their match today with brilliant goals which Rashford scored the first goal. Due to the match selection of players it shows that Manchester united is preparing seriously for the clash with Barcelona.

Barcelona has a good team and are playing good football by winning their recent matches. Lewandoski is going to be the man which the team will be looking up to for their goals, which he wouldn't disappoint his team. Eric Ten Hag is more experience than Xavi and I think this will also count on the game.

On the one hand it is great to have some good games in the Europa League so early on during the final stages as that makes it more exciting to watch those games as well, but on the other hand it's sad as one of the big favorites gets kicked out already. Just looking at the tables in national competitions one would think that Barcelona is likely going to make it here, but I think this is an even game.

Both have their strengths and both are more or less on fire. In the beginning when they failed to qualify for the Champions League final round I thought they might not be motivated enough to give their very best in the Europa League, but I think at this stage of the season they are beyond it and will try to take it home. That could be a first nice little festival we are looking forward to here.

No doubt that Lewandowski is in great shape and Manchester also has its qualities offensively. I think it is going to be a close fight in the end. Barcelona's defense is incredible of course and that might be the key to the next round for them.
1185  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: UEFA Champions League 2022/23 Season on: February 12, 2023, 11:22:50 PM
Milan vs Tottenham is another match on the first day of this stage. Milan are still favoured for the win but there isn't a big gap between the odds of these teams either. I would have expected Tottenham to be the favourite at this point. But I get it on one hand. Because both teams seem quite weak when it comes to their defensive strategies. Milan and Tottenham are both giving big spaces to their opponents to score these days. For example Tottenham got a huge defeat against Leicester by 4-1 a short time ago.

This is making things really difficult to predict one side to win. Instead my choice to bet on is both teams to score now. 1.74 is a pretty nice odd for that.
Forget the odds Tottenham is a great team and you can't take this from AC Milan because they are also a great team,
Comparing the players head to head Tottenham have more quality players at their disposal than AC Milan, even the coach in Antonio Conte he has won more trophies and has more experience that AC Milan's coach so both teams are favourite and both teams are Also underdogs because they can cause a major upset, I won't be surprised if either team qualifies because it's gonna be a closely contested match .

Tottenham is in better shape right now, but I am not sure whether they are so dominant as the odds say they are. Beating AC Milan in an away game isn't easy either. Milan's performance is a bit deceptive now because they had a long streak of weakness now, but they've been consistently strong all the time. Now this is a different competition and I think the first leg is a 50:50 situation pretty much with maybe Tottenham having a sight edge over Milan.

Even more interesting is now the situation for PSG. Nobody knows whether Mbappe and Messi will play. That would be rough for them, but so far I think this is more about acting and drama. I just can't imagine that PSG really shows up without those two superstars. They will at least be sitting on the bench, that would be my call. Without them it is going to be very hard although Bayern Munich isn't in the best condition either.

Roma drew away to Lecce. I hope this point loss won't hurt them in the future. Because every point lost in this kind of matches is important.
In the most important match of the day, I can say that Atalanta got a very important 3 points by beating lazio 2-0 away. With this win, they moved above Lazio. Lazio had the ball at their feet but Atalanta had more chances and won the match.

Losing those two points was quite painful for Roma I assume. Mourinho is realistic enough to know what he can be competing for this season and his goal is to make it to the Champions League. Now losing these two points is definitely a bummer. They dominated the game, but Lecce understood that they had to constantly get Roma out of the game by committing fouls. Lecce had 24 fouls and Roma had only 8. It was the whistle against Lecce all the time. Usually that is typical for Mourinho teams to commit fouls and be strategic about it, but today he got beaten with his own weapons. They are still in the race for the Champions League qualifiers though. It would be nice to see them play the competition next season.

I wonder why people complain so much about Arsenal not winning against Brentford. So far this season no strong opponent team has been able to win Brentford, it is either they lose or they draw. This season, Manchester united, Liverpool, Manchester City , Tottenham  can all testify.
Brentford 4-0 Man united, Brentford 2-2 Tottenham Brentford 3-1 Liverpool, Brentford 0-0 Chelsea , Man City 1-2 Brentford. This record shows that Arsenal played their best, it just wasn't easy for them
People are complaining because they think Arsenal has a big chance to win the match at home. Arsenal also can play with most of the main players and they were dominating the match. They even can make 23 shot attempts, 7 shots on the target. People feel disappointed because Arsenal players wasted too many chances.

Well, Brentford always made it difficult for the top teams in EPL. But people assume it is different for Arsenal since Arsenal is at the top of EPL standings. People expect Arsenal to prove that they are the best team in EPL this season by beating a strong opponent like Brentford. However, I really understand that Arsenal squad isn't perfect, there will be always a chance to be defeated by any team. It is a football match, the result is sometimes hard to be predicted.

This is just how things sometimes go and don't forget that Manchester City also lost 2 out of the last 5 games. Now this draw is painful for Arsenal I guess as the match against Manchester City means a lot more pressure now. City is in a better position in my opinion for that game. There is just one rule for them and that is not to lose that game. If Arsenal beats them, I think that we might be one very big step closer to the championship. Yes everyone will say that there are still 16 games to go afterwards, but being 9 points ahead at this stage of the season is a huge deal no matter what. I am really looking forward to that game as that's a serious highlight this season.
1189  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin adoption growing stronger everyday on: February 11, 2023, 10:08:46 PM
in fact, as time goes by, you can be sure that more and more people will adopt bitcoin because the name bitcoin has spread throughout the world, even if someone accepts it or not,
but the adoption rate of bitcoin is increasing due to news on social media and so on. then you can be sure that the number of people adopting bitcoin will increase, so it's no wonder that many people are investing in bitcoin for the long term because many predict that bitcoin adopters will increase.
I mean, that's what adoption is literally. Bitcoin being used on a much larger scale because more people are becoming aware of its features and benefits. Can't get any simpler than that. News and Social Media does a little good for bitcoin, but for the most part they would most likely trash upon it every chance they get. What works best is still word of mouth, and it could be executed in multitudes of ways. Seminars, Meetings, announcements, all that stuff.

There is still a lot of work that needs to be done. When it comes to micro transactions, Bitcoin still isn't the perfect choice. Yes we do have options like the lightning network, but for everyday usage it must be even easier to use.

I think the idea of Bitcoin being digital gold still fits a good bit better than Bitcoin being a currency. The required number of confirmations and the time for transactions to confirm can still be a bit too long for many use cases. But still, Bitcoin is developing right as we speak and if it overcomes a couple of hurdles it could indeed be functioning as a perfect currency one day.

Sevilla are really impressing me now with their performance. They are having a quite one-sided game against Mallorca and this has helped them get 2-0 ahead already as well.
Indeed, I did really think that Sevilla's performance this season will be still like previously. But. currently, their performance is exactly increasing and developing very much. I do agree that this is the real Sevilla that we know previously. From 5 matches, they could win 3 matches although with 2 losses, but this is good progress than previously they often got lost in sequences. In this match between Sevilla and Mallorca, Sevilla really could give good pressure and attacks, they tried to make an offensive performance so that making Mallorca's defense bothers. Now, they are no longer in the relegation zone again and are in the middle standing. Really good development and progress of a football club.
I'm also happy to see Sevilla returning to a better performance than before, yes this is real Sevilla, we know they are one of strongest club in La Liga. Now Sevilla is successfully in the middle of the table, and I believe they will not return to the relegation zone, it seems that with this victory Sevilla will be able to welcome PSV very well in the Europa league next week.

I am curious whether Sevilla will be the old Sevilla in the Europa League. Their performances in that competition were almost always excellent, but now they seem to be a bit out of shape. The game against Eindhoven won't be an easy one as Eindhoven is just getting back in shape. The strongest part in the squad used to be the defense for Sevilla. They are doing ok right now, but it's not as it used to be in the past. Who knows, maybe they'll just be on point for the Europa League.

Barcelona are inform more than real Madrid infact Barcelona are the most informed Spanish team as we speak, they gave won all their games this year , we saw how they thrashed Sevilla in their last match, and see currently 8points clear of real Madrid who list their last match against real Mallorca,  Barcelona have face the likes of Real Madrid in the Spanish super cup in the final and win them, even win athletico Madrid before the real Madrid match, so Barcelona are the best Spanish team as it stands and if they continue with this form they will surely win the league title for the first time in 3 years.

Yes, Barcelona performance has showed that they have what it takes to embrace this season title, because their coach has introduced some new skills that is helping the team to achieved victory in any competition. I think, Barcelona will definitely break the record this season to win this la Liga league title, because they have defeated so many strong teams and they have moved to first position in the la Liga league title which are part of the advantage that will make them to remain on top till the final battle. I don't think, Real Madrid will make it this season to embrace the la Liga league title, because their performance is seriously reducing which their coach need to apply some skills that will help them to improve.

I think it has a lot to do with getting some brand new players integrated into the squad. Barcelona was playing like a fully squeezed lemon with all those oldies running around. They just have had enough, players like Pique. Gavi, Torres, Raphael and even Lewandowski brought in immense new motivation. That is one major reason why they are now again performing on another level. I think it is difficult to tell how much of a contribution Xavi is actually responsible for. He is most likely very good at communicating effectively. In the beginning I thought he might not make it, but he solved problems and got things under control.

That was a heartbreak earthquake. Footage of the incident live really shows how disaster out it was. I can’t imagine living somewhere that this could happen. So many buildings built to not withstand Mother Nature. I half expected this thread to be littered with conspiracy theories about how this could be a response to them getting f16s, but I guess it’s still early. Prayers to the citizens of Turkey and Syria.

Coming up with any kind of conspiracy theory here would take stupidity and ignorance really to the next level, but I get you. It wouldn't be surprising either these times. So before anyone really decides to come up with some insane theory, better get familiar with seismic fault lines, how they work and please explain how someone might have influenced anything...

The worst thing is the constantly growing number of victims. Every time I refresh my news ticker the number goes up significantly. This is a disaster. It is not even certain at this point whether more impactful earthquakes are underway. They have had hundreds of smaller ones just within this short period of time.

It is good to see though that the world seems to be sticking together and everyone is willing to help.
1195  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin adoption growing stronger everyday on: February 08, 2023, 04:55:13 AM
Considering the last year's market stats and developments I think there were just a few bitcoin adoption progress. Even some of the small Bussniess that entered the golden time of the cycle took a wise exit from the market due to Bear Pressure. I am very hopeful for the year 2023 let's see which big developments are going to happen in the year 2023. Currently, the market is stuck between the hands of the Bears and the Bulls. February is going to play an important role in the whole domain.
One major reason that have pulled bitcoin's adoption some few steps backward is the hacks and crises experienced in the year 2022 and some other previous experience, I can tell you that many are still very skeptical about the future of bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general, many are afraid that the government of the world might wake up one morning and declare war against anyone suspected to be a bitcoin or crypto holder, which will result in a big dump that will crash the price of bitcoin and crypto and probably end the industry.

But this is never going to happen, bitcoin is here to stay and I can tell that it's adoption is growing, though might not be as fast as we want it, but slow and moving forward is always better than stagnant or fast and moving backward.

The governments around the world can wake up one morning and declare war, but that won't change much. That's empty words by any government as we have already seen. Take as an example climate change. While some of the governments are complaining about Bitcoin's "gigantic" contribution to climate change, it is obviously impossible to get governments around the world to work cooperatively against climate change anyway. Not that they are doing nothing, but many governments are putting their own interests above all others. The same will happen if government 1 out of 195 declares war on crypto. Even if there are 150 governments declaring war, there will be another government out of the remaining 45 saying "hey, we are fine with building an innovative industry in financial technology, just come to us!".

You would have to have a legal framework equally applicable and enforceable all around the world. Is there just a single example where you have seen that such a utopian scenario works out? Cheesy I implied myself with the word "utopian" that it is not going to happen.

Bitcoin is not just a gimmick without any potential whatsoever. Even if someone doesn't like it or doesn't trust it, most people still have an uncertain feeling deep down that the technology is probably going to play a role in our lives one way or another.

We have also already crossed the point of no return in terms of the industry's scale in my opinion. Even if the vast majority of governments was against it, it is already too attractive to become a host for the industry in order for every single government to refrain from taking the opportunity.

Bitcoin adoption is also not just the number of wallets. Now in the most narrow meaning of the word "adoption", it kind of comes down to the number of individual users. But adoption can also mean when people decide to build infrastructure, like a company could decide to build rails for trains that can't be used by individual people yet. But adoption is still growing overall even when it's on the investment side of things. And that is clearly what is constantly happening with Bitcoin.

1197  Economy / Economics / Re: Berkshire Hathaway was built atop a system that Bitcoin was created to destroy. on: February 06, 2023, 06:35:32 PM
I'm not sure if Bitcoin is that antagonistic that it was created to destroy the current economic system, the one which capitalists like Buffet have taken advantage of. Or it was simply created to be an alternative to fiat.

But be that as it may, you cannot expect these people who have benefited so much from the current system to show strong support for that which tries to disrupt such system itself. They have already made successful empires with this system.

That's correct, but one important point to consider as well is that Buffett is not only speaking for himself, but also for all the shareholders and stakeholders, among which are almost 400,000 employees. He might think that this is the best way to protect their combined interests. He might also really truly believe that Bitcoin / decentralized financial systems are trash. Now in his eyes it should absolutely be trash because outrageous rent-seeking at close to zero marginal cost becomes significantly harder in openly accessible systems. Buffett wants systems that generate revenue, ok, I get that. But for how long did banks not innovate and instead played the cat and mouse game because there was no competition on the horizon at all?

Revenue from transaction cost was the easiest money banks could ever earn. Only later on when big scandals happened and they fucked up big time here and there came stronger regulation into play, but it still was pretty much the same process for banks to transfer either 10 USD or 10 mio. USD. Yet they took a more or less flat percentage cut of the sum transacted. Closed doors on the weekends, no service after 6 PM and before a AM and so on and so forth.

With a competitive system that never sleeps, the banks realized they have to get their ass moving and they can't offer their services at too expensive prices in order to not create further incentives for the competition to innovate even harder.

Among the most important characteristics of Bitcoin is that it didn't have to get a banking license, a process that used to be so hard that its only goal was to preserve monopolistic rent-seeking banking infrastructure for the long-term. While banks complained about some regulation, they wanted harder regulation wherever it led to insurmountable barriers to entry for potential competitors like banking start ups or financial applications taking business away from them. This has of course changed significantly, not least because the whole world went mobile.

Bitcoin does not need permission to co-exist. People are free to choose whether or not they want to use Bitcoin in order to either transact globally or just take some of their financial wealth with them no matter where they are going. Unlimited capital mobility is again something that takes away leverage from banks over their customers. They can't freeze your accounts nor put you under pressure in any other way they'd subtly love to.

And of course there is the competitive character of Bitcoin towards FIAT and that is something policy makers now more and more are forced to have on their radar when making important economic decisions. They are still doing whatever they want as it seems, but this is a question of time I suppose when Bitcoin as a system becomes such a viable alternative for the vast majority of the people around the globe that policy makers will indeed think twice before making their decision.

Who knows but maybe this CL season we get to see a winner that hasn't been on the top of our lists before the season started.

In the Champions League, we see almost every season that the most favorite team does not win the title. Manchester City and PSG were the favorites last season. But they could not win the title. And in the previous season, no one would have imagined that the Chelsea team would be champions. Chelsea unexpectedly won the title by surprising everyone. I think we will see the same thing this season. The lesser favorite team will win the title.
That's why i never try to believe if PSG or City will be winning the title for this season. I would like to see any surprises that came from another team like chelsea. Real madrid has become the team with the most UCL trophies.
Liverpool may also give a big surprised but consider it will be facing real madrid and im seeing how difficult liverpool is to beat real madrid. Chelsea will come with a new team. I hope that chelsea can also take the trophy for this season.
This gonna be a big surprise if chelsea will able go to final.

This is what I expect as well and I also hope for it. We have seen last season that even when a game was literally over like Real Madrid against Manchester City or against PSG, there are still tons of chances to come back in the end.

Real Madrid is a good example for a comeback team, but this year it is quite even between the teams. One thing is for sure though and that is that PSG and Manchester City are still waiting for their first win of the CL ever. It is almost hard to believe that none of them has won it yet despite the investments made and the players they have had season after season.

There are a couple of players who could once more make the difference, but even when Mbappé dominated many of the games in 21/22, it was still not enough to win against the big teams in the end.

It is a competition where the slightest differences can be decisive. It could be a bad decision by the referee or the goalkeeper making the mistake, but I do hope that the winner will be a deserved one.

Bitcoin or cryptocurrency value is determined by human need, in case all institutions, and retail investors stay away from it, which means we don't need it anymore, then it will surely die, let alone not increase in price. But this is unlikely because everyone is aware that bitcoin is a precious asset, and its value will continue to increase sharply in the future. So if someone sells all of their bitcoins, there will always be someone willing to buy them all back.

I would argue that the explanation is a bit more complex than that! Wink

Bitcoin could still be traded even if nobody needs it. When the tulip bubble popped in the Netherlands, everyone asked themselves why the tulips were traded in the first place. Did anyone need tulips?

I guess any "thing" out there that is expected to increase in price (not necessarily value) for rational or irrational reasons will still attract some interest.

The interesting part about OP's question is that it doesn't matter whether institutions need it or not. If anyone at a scale large enough needs it, institutions will also get in. The same counts for the other way around. If Bitcoin one day became the major tool for institutional transfers, retailers would also have a good reason to get in.

Analysis of behavioral economics can be extremely interesting at times. Even if you are the only person with 100% correct information, which is telling you that Bitcoin will die in July 2024, it could still be the right move financially if you expect another bull run based on false assumptions by the masses. I am not talking about morals here, just the financial aspect.

With all that being said, I believe that by now the skin in the game concerning institutions is already significant. They won't just leave the space and also, a big advantage of this type of technology is the innovative potential due to being an open system / open source and scalable in many ways.
