1301  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: info about Ian Colman mnemonic on: July 01, 2023, 11:54:20 PM
If there are a total of 2256 combinations. one combination of 24 words has the same chance of being picked than another combination of 24 words. This probability is 1 out of 2256 whether how it was generated if each word was picked randomly.
If there are some unconscious but common psychological patterns/biases in your choices, don't you think someone or something(like an AI) could discover and exploit them one day, and instead of having to check 2256 combinations, he will just need to focus on 2^25.6 ones for example?
Personally I don't trust softwares to generate good randomness either because too many bugs/limitations have been found in the past, physical randomness is the most reliable IMO.

There appears to be a flaw in Google’s Android operating system, making it impossible for the OS to generate “secure random numbers,” which are needed to encrypt Bitcoin transactions.. This affects those who use Bitcoin wallet apps like Bitcoin Wallet, Blockchain.info, BitcoinSpinner, and Mycelium Wallet. Some apps, like Coinbase and Mt Gox are still secure because they don’t rely on the Android OS to generate their numbers.
[...]
Alex Klyubin, a Google Security Engineer on the Android team has acknowledged that this is a legitimate flaw in Android. The problem, as often seems to be the case, is Java.”Java Cryptography Architecture (JCA) for key generation, signing, or random number generation may not receive cryptographically strong values on Android devices due to improper initialization of the underlying PRNG,” said Klyubin. Translated out of geek speak, that means that Android is, as we thought, not generating random numbers correctly.

Applying this test to the output of various pseudorandom sequence generators is interesting. The low-order 8 bits returned by the standard Unix rand() function, for example, yields:
Chi square distribution for 500000 samples is 0.01, and randomly would exceed this value more than 99.99 percent of the times.
While an improved generator [Park & Miller] reports:
Chi square distribution for 500000 samples is 212.53, and randomly would exceed this value 97.53 percent of the times.
Thus, the standard Unix generator (or at least the low-order bytes it returns) is unacceptably non-random, while the improved generator is much better but still sufficiently non-random to cause concern for demanding applications.

1302  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How do you come up with reliable predictions for prices? on: July 01, 2023, 10:59:29 PM
I've seen a lot of you looking at Bitcoin charts and trying to predict prices. Do I have to remember certain rules or be really good at technical analysis to make accurate predictions? What tools or methods do you use to predict prices? I have enough time and I'm excited to learn the strategies you suggest so I can understand the market better.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1493.0
I have seen some suggestions under some headings but they are too technical for me,(like this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1493.0) Do you have more beginner level suggestions?
If you want to use some trading strategies like the Kelly Criterion one https://www.investopedia.com/terms/k/kellycriterion.asp
You need to know how each chart pattern you rely on has been able to predict rightly the trend in the following hours the pattern has occurred if you're a day trader, the following days if you're a swing trader or the following weeks if you are a position one. Unfortunately I've never seen this kind of statistics, so I wonder how rational and reliable is this graphical technical analysis junk science.

Why do you think 1.02 or 1.01 were bad odds for this range? You were afraid to see the price going under $0 ?  Grin If odds were so small it's because most of other bettors also thought it was a risk-free bet. And I think we were right since the winning outcome has been this one at the end. 2% or 1% in few weeks, which safe investment gives you that?
Unfortunately I had placed a bet on an upper range, with a smaller amount though, that's what I regret even if it would have covered me, not to have bet on this range with such odds.
1304  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: The paranoid user's security guide for using Electrum safely. on: July 01, 2023, 10:01:02 PM
I disagree because Electrum 2FA makes a 2-of-3 multisig. This will prevent you from getting robbed if just one device is stolen, but if all of them are taken? Then your funds are screwed.

If you are OK with placing Electrum on many devices, I guess there's no problem with that as long as you move your funds quickly, but this guide is more oriented to using Electrum on a single device, without additional peripherals (hence why LiveUSB is not included cc. @LoyceV)
If your 2 devices are stolen, the robber will still need to know the PIN code of your smartphone, the password of your computer, and the one of your Electrum wallet, because using the 2FA feature don't prevent people to also using a "strong password" for their wallet. So it wouldn't be so simple.

You're right about bare seed phrases being handled as little as possible, and frankly that's how it should be treated. As seed phrases with bitcoin on them are more like physical assets, such as gold or a stack of cash, you should be moving it around as little as possible.
Yes I agree with you but personally, I'm not confortable with having one single backup of my seed, even if I would carve it in stone.

Not only is that bad for privacy, it's easy to mess up writing it and if you do it electronically, you could get robbed by specialists inspecting the peripheral's NVRAM.
So, this is not risky unless you are holding a large amount into this address.

I don't think there's a way to determine the safest server, with the exception of the one hosted on electrum.org. You're basically trusting the node operator to not leak your privacy.

A private electrum server is much better than a public one for this reason, maybe I'll add that. It does require a connection to a bitcoin full node though - usually you have to run those yourself. Or maybe Getblock will do provided that wallet RPCs are not used (they are disabled over there).
Running a full node is not an acceptable solution for a random user, and Bitcoin is supposed to be safely usable by everyone.
There is neither any reputed SOCKS 4/5 proxies?
1305  Economy / Gambling / Re: FreeBitco.in-$200 FreeBTC⭐Win Lambo🔥0.2BTC DailyJackpot🏆$32,500 Wager Contest on: July 01, 2023, 08:48:05 PM
Now I don't really bet much on Freebitcoin, but I did want to get a Lambo ticket just before one of the price bets expired. So I dumped 500k sats on the FUN price option. I saw that odds were extremely low at 1.01 but I also saw that there were actually quite a number of other bets on all other options, so I thought, nah you know what, I want that Lambo ticket.

Bet settled today and not even 1 sat profit haha.

I know, I know, commissions and all that but the system "estimate" probably needs to be a lot more accurate than showing 1.01 if it's not even 1.00001, don't you think? Just my heartfelt feedback Wink

@buwaytress if my assumption is correct then you wagered at the very end and that’s where Freebitco differs from other gambling sites i.e. their time weight multiplier is kinda complicated because once I had wagered a small amount and the calculator showed me a higher amount  but after winning the amount was very less and that’s when I understood it’s a totally different concept. Furthermore I’m not complaining because it’s yet a fun way to gamble and the more early start you have the better and for next time try wagering early for higher returns.
It could also be because they haven't sent winnings to his account yet when he looked at it this morning. I've placed a bet on this range too and I got few winnings. Unfortunately I bet on other ranges too, so it's a losing bet on overall for me, but I didn't get 0 winnings for this range.
1306  Economy / Gambling / Re: Impossible KYC Requirements - Stake.com - Withholding $6000 USD on: July 01, 2023, 09:53:32 AM
Im sure the OP bet on sports and he was a winner. .. Actually i dont think it has anything to do with AML.   i noticed when someone bet on spoelrts large amounts or won large amounts in sports then they start a lot of KYC things. I dont know what nature of deal a casino or stake specially habe with the sports odds provider probably its a revenue share deal so this KYC comes from the sports provider same as Rollbit a lot of issue with Rollbit banning custumers and most  of that customers bet on sports and winners . it makes me believe its the sports odd provider who flag the accounts.
While some guys who bet on inhouse games rarely get a KYC triggered.  Same as in Primedice its also owned by Stake but they never required any KYC even for large amounts  and its also a curacao regulated.  So you guys stop talking about AML.
Yes you're right, sportsbooks usually also have a home team doing this job, but it's mostly odds providers who flag customer accounts.
Stake's odds provider is Betradar and Betradar has a special department dedicated to this task actually : MTS. They openly admit to profile every customer of their customers and giving them a "Customer Confidence Factor (CCF)" .

Give people a more personalised betting experience by configuring their profiles on an account and sport level (pre-match and in-play). You can even configure individual live time delays, maximum stakes or re-offers for each customer.

Automated Player Risk Profiling
Understanding how your players behave lets you determine the level of risk you can tolerate per player, shop or terminal. Which means you can protect your business and offer the best possible betting experience.
That’s why player profiling should be a standard part of being a bookmaker. But doing it manually is labour-intensive and open to mistakes.

MTS uses AI to automate the process and give you a more accurate picture. The system constantly runs over 1.2 million profile checks on average every day. And if you want to adapt the profiles manually later, you can.
The result? Better performance and higher profits than if you profile your players manually.

1307  Economy / Gambling / Re: Impossible KYC Requirements - Stake.com - Withholding $6000 USD on: June 30, 2023, 11:09:02 PM
What a nightmare! I didn't even know you needed all this stuff for an online casino. To combat money laundering, I suppose? How much is the minimum? If you bet 10 and win 1000, do you still have to make a kyc?

Yes, these are AML Compliance measures, and measures to combat the "financing of terrorism" in general.
In general, you also have minimum wages, and you can't withdraw money immediately after a deposit. Often, for online casinos, you need to have gambled between 15% and 30% of your deposit for your withdrawal to be accepted without concern.

KYC depends more on the regulators (ANJ in France - as you are French, but it could be BGC in Belgium for example, no matter), and the laws they apply. A casino regulated in the Cayman Islands will not have the same KYC / POA / EDD policy as one regulated in the UK. Unregulated casinos sometimes ask for documents too, on a case-by-case basis.

As regulators and local laws become increasingly complex to avoid, and the penalties incurred are very heavy for casinos that don't comply, it doesn't surprise me that we've seen a general tightening of these measures in recent years.
When a casino asks for endless KYC it's rarely(never actually) because of AML compliance measures. If they had concerns about that, they would have asked him to complete KYC once he had deposited his funds, not when he wants to withdraw them.
Weirdly we never see them asking KYC++ to losers, they never need more documents to take our money when we lose...  Roll Eyes
Sadly Willowbitcoin seems to be a winner, and has been flagged as good bettor(sport bettor I guess), so they will find the most ridiculous excuses to avoid paying him.

It is a legitimate account so I was more worried about account sustainability and getting limited rather than having my balance "stolen".  I never considered it a possibility.  The annoying this is, I had plenty of opportunities to withdraw as that figure represents a grind over time from a $750 deposit to $6000 ( helped by bitcoin appreciation )
1308  Economy / Gambling / Re: Loophole in stopping Money Laundering through Wagering on: June 30, 2023, 09:59:08 PM
As we know that most gambling sites will require you to gamble and wager your whole balance once, before you can cash out or withdraw from the gambling site and they take this measure so people do not do money laundering whereby deposit and withdraw without gambling.

Now the point here is that on the gambling site, there are many easy winning bets with odds like 1.01x etc. If the money lauder is sensible he can easily be wagering the whole amount by placing a few bets where the odds are very low and the winning chances are 99%.

So does this mean that there is a loophole here and the money launderers can easily by pass this wagering requirement?
I don't think it's a loophole, because even with odds of 1.5 they have a little bit less than 66% to win their bets, so they would win 2 times on 3 and win +50% of profit each time, I don't think it's a big issue when you need to launder money.

Your contest will last till July 19 so I guess you won't launch your mainnet version before this date. Do you have already an ETA for the launch of the final version? It will be before the end of summer? Because it seems to be a little bit complicated to get UBucks just for placing fake bets(we need to register on discord and to claim them there as I understand). Maybe you could also give them here to people leaving their address here or through PM? There are only few full decentralized sportsbooks up to now, and they only provide few bets on few sports unfortunately, so I think Ubet can be really successful.

Ahh yes that solves it. I exchanged the "de" in the link with "en" between the slashes and then it works out. Thanks!
Now it isn't working for me and I don't have any "en" in the link, please post the one that works for you Smiley Something strange is happening

https://sportsbet.io/en/sports/soccer/news/bitcointalk-sports-fanatics-league-round-3

For anyone who is not able to read the article:

https://sportsbet.io/en/sports/soccer/news/bitcointalk-sports-fanatics-league-round-3

Sportsbet.io redirects to your country and it might not be available then. I had to change "de" to "en" as marked above.

Yeah same here as i had reported the last week, it doesnt work on other languages only in english. Trofo solution to open a private tab to avoid the redirect to our native language works fine and you can read the article.

About the article itself, nice to see i have a new "derby" against jeremy ( i didnt know he was my derby Tongue )

About the questions, Tennis question on grass really dificult to know. And Libertadores, its being very strange this year.
Yes it's really funny to read about those derbies, clashes, and challenges between members, that's a really good idea because it gives excitement to look closely at what is happening in the other divisions. Well despite his procrastination it seems my challenger has submitted his predictions on time. Grin Good luck to him. Cheesy LOL

Attends ...

1317  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bet on live game or while game hasn't started yet? on: June 25, 2023, 07:58:16 PM

Cast your bet in a match that have yet not started or bet when the game is already live?
It must have been asked before but in case new sports bettors have not yet read such thread, reply back your opinion about it.

Found myself losing when the money line changes from 1.75 to 4.35 as the game began. But sometimes when I also wait for the game to start, it changes to worse such from 1.75 to 1.10
Usually it's not so good to bet when matches have started because live bets have often big margins, so odds can drop from 1.75 to 1.71 for example just because the scheduled time of the beginning of the match has been reached, even if players haven't started to do anything. Bets with fix odds allow you to bet at the current instant without having to think about how actual probabilities will change till the beginning (or till the end if live betting is available) of the match.

Lol ok guys, seems like everyone doesn't seem to get me. EV is of course negative but you count this 1% against all the other 1%s possible in gambling today or right now, which is dice, and sports betting. This particular 1% returns is lower risk than dice and sports betting, which has higher risk for the same returns.

That's all I'm saying Tongue
Yes I understand what you mean but if you look its price on Bitfinex it's still around $0.00424 currently that's not far away from $0.005. Bitcoin is highly volatile and a bull run can still happen before saturday, so for me this range has around 25% chances to lose at least. I'm sad because when I placed my bet on this range odds were way more interesting than that, so now I regret the amount of money I have placed on this range and I hope an upper range will win to be honest.
1319  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: The paranoid user's security guide for using Electrum safely. on: June 24, 2023, 11:59:36 PM
- Antivirus software should be used if your wallet is running on Windows.
I would add: And put the User Account Control (UAC) to the highest level you can.

- If you have a strong password, you don't need 2FA protection, especially not the one that's bundled with Electrum.
I'm sorry but you can't say that, Electrum password and Electrum 2FA protection are not the same thing at all. The 2FA feature will protect your funds even if your password, your computer or your wallet are compromised, since the one-time passcode from your smartphone will always be needed to move your funds.
https://api.trustedcoin.com/#/faq

- Do not use advanced features like custom wordlist, BIP39 password, custom derivation path, Shamir's secret sharing, etc for your seed phrase. All of these are easy to screw up and will destroy your seed phrase copy as they can't possibly be remembered.
I disagree with that, if you store your seed in one single place you are more likely to lose it, if you store it in several places you are more likely to expose it.
Using a BIP39 password or a Shamir's secret sharing scheme(SLIP39) is a must if you want to safely store your seed in several places. Seeds without passphrases or SSS should be handled as little as possible actually.

- Same goes with exporting private keys - do not do it at all.
It's way safer to export one single private key, than to play with the seed of dozens addresses.

- Don't keep large sums of money on a software wallet. Use a reliable hardware wallet for cold storage.
No if you have large sums of money it's safer to use a real air gapped software wallet than a plugged and close-source hardware one.

It's an interesting "How to" thread. But unfortunately you haven't talked about the Electrum servers. Which ones are the most reputed and safest to use?
Same thing for SOCKS 4/5 proxies, which reputed ones can be used with Electrum?
1320  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I want to migrate from Trust Wallet to another wallet. on: June 24, 2023, 10:58:58 PM
I think only Metamask is capable to import the seed from Trustwallet but I do not think it's a safe way to import seed phrases from Trustwallet to Metamask.

If I were you why not create a new wallet on Metamask and send all your funds from trustwallet that's the safest than using the same seed from another wallet.

And if you staked some Tron coins on the trust wallet just leave it there or better use the ledger hardware wallet they do support staking on ledger live.
No you're wrong, Trustwallet uses BIP39 seeds and standard derivation paths, so you can import Trust wallet seeds in most standard wallets. I've recently imported seeds from Trust wallet in an altcoin wallet (FUN token wallet) and I got back all my funds from the Ethereum blockchain and the Polygon one. I've also imported the seed in Metamask and it worked smoothly too.
