141  Economy / Speculation / what's the easiest way to trade coins for coins on: December 05, 2013, 08:48:42 PM
I've been mining alt-coins for awhile and I'd like to trade some of them in for the more stable bitcoin. What's the easiest way to trade coins like this?

Tanamir sent me a PM asking how to use -datadir so I'll post it here in case anyone needs it.

go to the proprieties of the bitcoin icon, and put the below in the target field. (of course use your own paths)

"C:\Program Files\Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe" "-datadir=F:\coins\Bitcoin"

I'll just take a wild guess that when the last bitcoin is minded the value will be almost nothing, by then people will have moved onto a better coin and only a few hobbyist will still be mining for fun.

You are talking for 100 years from now. There will not be any bitcoin hobbyists around if a better coin is being introduced meanwhile.

Yeah as I understand the last coin will be made in 2040, and sure there will be some hobbyists out there, there are still people using the commodore 64 and playing ultima online.

electrum is less resource intensive but QT is most secure and running a full node helps us all Smiley

Is that true that electrum is less secure from the user perspective?

there are several wallets, but someone did a review a long time ago of the QT wallet, you can see it at the top of this sub forum.
146  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does Bitcoin hold intrinsic value, or is it overvalued? on: December 04, 2013, 09:10:28 PM
I'm in the camp that says there is no such thing as intrinsic value.
147  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Lets talk about Bitcoin - Sick of the Media Portrayal on: December 04, 2013, 09:07:34 PM
I have a feeling that the long the media dismiss bitcoin the better it will be for bitcoin long term.

Lol how and why would they kill him? And if they did kill him, I can guarantee you nothing of value would be lost. What would happen if his weed addiction somehow ends up killing him and his kid?

who knows, assuming you're in the states, it happens all the time.

What the hell?  Why would anyone call police because of people smoking weed, ever?  Calling others to bestow their force upon someone for your behalf is just as bad as engaging in violence yourself.

Get a bag of dank and smoke him up with it.  Tell him he'd enjoy the high more if he didn't smoke mids.  He's honestly probably throwing up from smoking cigarettes plus weed, I had this happen to me when we blew through a quap of hash oil over summer.

Tell him he'd get way higher if he smoked less times a day.

All disputes can be resolved with a bag of dank.

Haha. Well if something is negatively affecting someone else and they keep doing it after you've asked them to stop, then what other option do you have? It is illegal after all, not that I believe it should be, but I have the upper hand here and the law on my side. He wont get arrested, maybe cautioned if they catch him in the act, but they'll probably just ask him to stop or next time or he might be in trouble. I don't mind him smoking, I just don't want to have to smell this putrid cheap shit. What people do in their own homes is their own business.

sure you hope that's what would happen, but what if they end up killing him or accidentally killing his kid. really I wouldn’t call the police over something like this, too dangerous for all involved.

I'd just simply tell him what your problem is, start there and see how it goes.

Tool - Rosetta Stoned

I can't believe how old these tool songs are, they still sound so modern.
153  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why exactly did all altcoins on cryptsy spike so high in the last 5 days? on: December 04, 2013, 07:43:58 PM
I think they just roughly follow the price of bitcoin. If people think bitcoin is more valuable then they think that all coins must be more valuable.
154  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin QT on: December 04, 2013, 07:40:24 PM
the -datadir options is what you're looking for, but I'd just get a wallet with a non local blockchain like electrum.

156  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Two-factor authentication on: December 04, 2013, 05:40:38 PM
Yeah I do really good passwords but I'm afraid of keylogging. Lets me ask something else, does the application have to support 2FA or is there another way?
157  Bitcoin / Project Development / Two-factor authentication on: December 03, 2013, 09:55:32 PM
Whats a good lower cost way to implement two factor authentication when using bitcoin wallets?
158  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hi all on: December 03, 2013, 09:46:24 PM
@Ecurb, thanks Part of me still thinks if I pick the right coin... Need to stop thinking like that  Wink

@Honeypot, my skills are limited, maybe someone else can help you

159  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Encrypted wallet.dat, lost password, any solutions? on: December 03, 2013, 09:45:02 PM
Here is maybe a silly question, but how do I know where my bitcoind is installed? I tend to remember that I installed it after I installed the regular qt client. Right now bitcoind runs but I don't know where it's at.
It's typically located (on Windows) in C:\Program Files (x86)*\Bitcoin\daemon\.

*can be just "program files", depending on your processor

thanks for that but what about on ubuntu?
160  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Pre-Internet Dinosaur Geek on: December 03, 2013, 08:45:04 PM
Hello,

Just wanted to start off here with an introduction.  Been dabbling in electronics since the 70's, started with computers in high school back in the early 80's with the Commodore PET.  Started my first BBS in 1989 running C-Net 64 DS2 BBS and later took over support and distribution of the software.  I also developed the CommNet Standard that networked other C-Net, Image, C*Base and Color 64/128 BBS's together into the largest Commodore BBS Network in history.

Got involved with CuSeeMe reflectors in the early 90's.  I actually connected to my ISP with my Commodore 64 to run the reflector, then connected to the reflector with my PC to do video chat.  Those were fun times.

In the late 90's and early 2000's I developed backend applications interfacing web sites with payment systems like CCBill, PayPal and a number of others.  This century I've been contributing to phpBB, Wordpress, Apache Lounge and a few other projects.

I currently own a computer, network and web sales and service company that custom builds quality computers, network and web solutions for our local community.  I got into the BitCoin world way too late, but I'm still willing to give it a go.  One of my old BBS buddies told me about his experience back in March and in June I read an article in one of the techie mags about the Butterfly Labs devices.  In July my son ordered a Jalapeno and bought me a couple Block Erupters.  I invested $40 for four additional Block Erupters and have reinvested all BTC made from then on back into more.

I now have 11 Block Erupters and a 10 port Saitechi USB Hub.  Was hoping to build up to at least 5GH/s with the Block Erupters before upgrading to the Jalapeno or the Block Erupter Blade but it looks like the USB devices are either not available or way too pricey now.  I was four days away from getting a Blade $216 before the prices went through the roof.  At this point I guess I'll just wait on the Red Furies to come in before I buy anything else.  No way am I spending $100 for a BES or $900 for a Blade.  I'll just keep building up the BTC until something reasonable comes around.

Happy Hashing!!

Welcome to the forum, I'm happy to see some of the senior folks in here who maybe have some different perspective on things.
