141  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Retrieve lost satoshis on: November 10, 2015, 08:01:03 PM
If you are running bitcoin core you can import it there.  If you are importing many addresses you can import them with the following rpc call:
Code:
importprivkey	<bitcoinprivkey> [label] [rescan=true]
Adds a private key (as returned by dumpprivkey) to your wallet. This may take a while, as a rescan is done, looking for existing transactions. Optional [rescan] parameter added in 0.8.0. Note: There's no need to import public key, as in ECDSA (unlike RSA) this can be computed from private key

What you could do to speed this up is set rescan=false so that it doesn't rescan for every address.

I think you can then just restart bitcoin core to rescan all?

Or just write rescan=true on the last one.  findftp, did you get this working?

Not yet.
I'm investigating several options.
I went blocktrail API method, but the API gives errors
I installed armory and it imported the keys much faster but it's currently still 'building databases' probably because I just installed it.
I read a bit about the RPC call method, but I'm not sure yet.

I did a bit of calculation and to cover all possible addresses of which one of them contain my satoshis I have to import about 400.000.000 addresses.
This probably a bit too much for a wallet.
I think I can better check each address against a UTXO database, but how to proceed?

142  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Retrieve lost satoshis on: November 09, 2015, 11:45:01 PM
So I was playing around a bit and lost some relative small amount of bitcoin
I used a certain method to create the public key, but I don't have it anymore.
Now I dug into python (which btw is new to me) and was able to produce a script which is able to give me a few thousand (perhaps few million) addresses of which one of them is the one I used.
In other words, I'm able to brute-force the private key because I know the pattern I used.

I exported first 200 addresses with my script and tried to import them into multibit classic.
This works, but is very slow.

Is there any other (more efficient) way to check balance of the keys?
143  Economy / Speculation / Re: 600$ = 1BTC New steady price before new year! on: November 04, 2015, 01:24:22 PM
$500 July next year.
We probably have a higher peak in between.

Technically speaking we've just had the higher peak...
144  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: lost password on blockchain.info wallet on: November 03, 2015, 09:30:31 AM
If so, knowing the public key as well, I can try to brute force the password or am I missing something?
The wallet contains 0.22 BTC
To brute-force the password, you'll need to know as much as possible about what the password is likely to be.  Then you'll need to use the identifier to get a copy of the encrypted wallet.  Then you can attempt to decrypt the wallet with the various possible passwords until you find one that successfully decrypts it.

Do you happen to know the encryption method used to encrypt the wallet?
edit: it is aes, just found out.

Where is the wallet stored when accessing the wallet through a browser in windows?
blockchain.info stores it in their database.  They send a copy to your browser when you supply the identifier.

So I fill in the identifier and look in my browser cache?
edit: if I save the page, I see a lot of stuff, but not a file called "wallet.aes.json"

Thanks for the detailed answer btw.

Just curious, but didn't you mention it was your friend that forgot the password?

True, but he gave the identifier to me so that I could try and restore his wallet.
Now we have the wallet file but did not crack the wallet yet.
I did some testing with bruteforce software in which I was able to crack test wallets.
We did not continue with cracking his wallet because otherwise he had to compose a list with all the passwords he had every used because he was pretty sure the password should be something which is for a great part something he used before.

He'll probably think twice when the amount in his wallet is able to himself a house or something.

No, this is just a tiny tiny blip to wake up some folks

We're gonna go up $300+ in 3 days. Mark my words.

Did.
Will remind you.

$240 in the next couple of months?  Great, that will coincide with more fiat.  Oh wait, does that mean I should sell now Huh

Like I said, sell the news...

But, if you're a permabull like me you can also chose to buy, hold and trade with 5% of your stack...

If nobody is forced to do anything then those that are willing to carry things forward can do so. Linux is a simple example of this. Nobody is forced to use Gnome yet there is no consensus on using it. The minority might not like it. But they are not being forced to use it. They can come up with their own GUI or accept it if the majority puts all of the work into Gnome.

Ahem, that is what Gavin and Mike tried to do with BitcoinXT.  But it seeems that "come up with their own implementation" is not allowed in bitcoin space...

You're right. People murdered them right away.

I was too early with selling the news a few days ago.
Now the EU VAT news is out, I'm happy to know we're going down again.

What's the opposite of a dead cat bounce called? How do you know this isn't a small retrace before the price continues to rise higher? I didn't notice any posts here discussing rumors about the VAT decision. I couldn't find any threads about it until the news got out, and I didn't know anything about it until then. I doubt many others were buying the rumor if there were no rumors flying around here.

We're you living under a rock since July 16th?

No, no rumours at all... I suggest you load up on expensive coins.
I'll wait and buy some $240 coins in the next two months...

I still can't find any old threads about it here, and I don't remember any discussions about it before the news was announced. Generally to buy the rumor means a community has to be talking about something and I don't remember any mention of the tax until today. This thread is great for finding out about the latest rumor, but I've not heard VAT mentioned for a long time.

Ah come on. As if all bitcoin buyers/investors come here to spread and buy the rumor.
This website is usually a pile of shit. Most bitcoin investors I know do not even come here or even know it's existence.

150  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: October 22, 2015, 02:46:53 PM

Exactly, so the second market news is unrelated to bitcoin.

Chinese and dollar exchanges are not really following, only some arbitrage trading imho.

What happened to the bitcoin spin off?

155  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gemini's launch is a failure, so is bitcoin on: October 10, 2015, 08:52:28 AM
LOL "We never sold a bitcoin"...

that's just a way of showing how much trust they have in bitcoin. i don't believe them either, but for some people who believe things very easily it may sound like they are hero's.

You should never trust words of snake oil salesmen unless they sign a message with their private key.

156  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: October 09, 2015, 07:13:31 PM
considering what we all now know about the reason for the original bubble up to $1,200.

Lol, enlighten us.  Grin
(only when it's something else than FUD gox bots)
157  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gemini's launch is a failure, so is bitcoin on: October 09, 2015, 12:26:35 PM
Many people desperately wanted bitcoin price to shoot up with the Winklevoss twin's Gemini and ETF. They're finding out Gemini is a failure. They will find out ETF is also a failure. The Winklevoss twin's don't do anything but for themselves. What they want to do is to "corner the market" all to themselves. In short, they're greedy as f*ck. Their greediness will be their downfall. So it will be for the majority of people on this forum.
I'm very happy to be a greedy motherfucker.
Only idiots sell at these prices.
158  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gemini's launch is a failure, so is bitcoin on: October 09, 2015, 11:59:14 AM
Everyone who thinks news has some instant effect on price is a failure...

Convert, hold, spend as necessary.
And buy more
That's the convert part
160  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: October 08, 2015, 12:16:42 PM
90 minutes to go now, right?

This is the most boring reaction to a sorta major event yet, I bet we won't even have a dump...

ok so what should i do now ?

a. buy and wait 4 digit

b. sell and wait 2 digit

c. do nothing

Convert, hold, spend as necessary.

This.
