1521  Local / Español (Spanish) / Re: Próximo Halving de Bitcoin on: May 09, 2020, 02:32:05 PM

1522  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: my antminer s11 has stopped working please help! on: May 09, 2020, 01:58:03 PM
Any Bitmain firmware from 2019 or later, locks the miner to their "signed" (newer) firmware and no SSH. I'm not aware of methods for downgrading back this specific model, which is so rare.

You should try the suggestion of removing the hashboards and testing them one by one. Yes, since the S11 this process is more involved due to the way Antminers now power their hashboards. You have to be very patient and more careful.

Unless you pĺan to send it to Bitmain for "maintenance", but you have until June 10 to do so...
1523  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Mining Hardware on 120V on: May 09, 2020, 01:49:29 PM
Yes for sure there is the added risk, but is still a viable option especially if they would like to breakeven in the end. It's been a while but I can't even remember off the top of my head what these are drawing now with the brains OS.
I know you've played around with a ton of these. I'm at work on my phone but I'm wondering if you can get 2 boards down around 800-900w. That would fit nicely on a 110 circuit. It's gotta be close depending on the model, but one of the 13.5TH units I think would get that low with 2 boards.

You definitely can do 800W with 3 boards if you force the miner down to about 10TH/s or less. Less boards should be easier (the R4 was essentially an S9 with 2 boards and a scroll fan).

Given the amount of super cheap S9s right now flooding the market, the best bet for OP is to purchase an used S9 with damaged or missing hashboards. One with 1 or 2 hashboards should do the trick even with factory firmware.
1524  Bitcoin / Mining support / After Jun 10, Bitmain will no longer repair these Antminers: S11, S9, T9+, etc.. on: May 09, 2020, 01:42:33 PM
Bitmain is sending this message to customers, quite surprising and at the same time worrying. I didn't know you could still send an S1 for repairs...

Quote
In order to better assist you to meet the challenges of market changes and technological innovation, we will stop providing maintenance services for the following models from May 10, 2020:

A3, B3, D3, DR3, DR5, G1, G2, L3, L3 ++, L5, R1, R3, R4, S1, S3, S5, S7,  S9, S9I, S9J, S11, T9 +, T11, V9, X3, Z9MINI, Z9

In addition, we will stop providing maintenance services for E3 from June 10, 2020.
If you have maintenance requirements for the above models, please create a repair ticket before the deadline and send the machine to our repair sites according to our After-Sales Maintenance Policy. Although we will stop the maintenance service of the above models, we will still be happy to provide you with product consulting services, including online and hotline customer service. At the same time, you can also get the product-related FAQ from our knowledge base and community.

You gotta love how they phrase is as "to better assist you" when they are actually assisting you less. It is surprising to see the S9 in there, given a recent article that states 23% of the current world hashrate is still being produced by S9s...

While some of the models are really old, some like the S11 are surprising to see being dropped.

Sure they just want to focus on the S17, whatever. Hopefully more people will now offer independent repair services.

So if you still have some of those models and you want THEIR repair service, better send them now...
1525  Other / Off-topic / Re: What have you done with your $1200? on: May 08, 2020, 08:12:55 PM
Savings right now, I guess for me.  Roll Eyes

I would buy with a small portion of it around 40% of the total amount Bitcoin.
The rest would be kept into a savings account in order to endure the coronavirus situation and the lockdown period. I know that it is not the best kind of investment to keep it into a savings account but this pandemic situation has made me be afraid of it.

Spoiled by the system, you think you are doing the right thing. You don't, if your fiat collapses, you lose all your savings. But you think the USD can never fail, that printing a few trillion dollars to give people "free money" won't do a thing...

I'll tell you the right thing: Move ALL into Bitcoin. And when you need to buy something, exchange only the minimum amount required to buy whatever it is you need to buy that day.

If you keep 60% of it, expect to lose that 60% at any time without warning.

It would be a historical event, but once it happens there is no turning back. Printing money is not a joke, my country has done it since 2014 and you can see the results... Foreigners laugh at our 3 USD monthly wage, and that's exactly the road we took. All you see is the price of things going up faster than your wage, until your wage is so ridiculous working doesn't make sense anymore and everyone depends on gov give-outs.
1526  Other / Off-topic / Re: Do you know any anonymous social network? on: May 08, 2020, 02:54:06 PM
I really wonder if there is some place where you can communicate without fear for your safety?

Have you tried Mastodon yet? Well i suppose that's more micro blogging (ie. Twitter) replacement than Facebook. For something like Facebook there are Diaspora and Friendica among a few others.

Of course the problem has always been to tell your friends and acquaintances to switch... Resistance to change is always strong.

Did you know that there are also secure instant messengers and chats?

But why stop there?, Is your operating system secure?
1527  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Wind Turbine and power supply? on: May 08, 2020, 05:40:00 AM
The purpose of the inverter is to convert DC into AC, which the usual PSU units expect (ironically the PSU converts it back into DC, but that's another story).

The batteries are meant to give you a buffer for then the turbine isn't giving much juice, but given the amount of power required, it becomes cost prohibitive. I think it would be better to just let them shutdown when there is no wind rather than messing with expensive batteries that need to be replaced every 3 years or so anyway.

By the way the same consideration applies to solar, and you can combine both.

So yeah, if you have that larger 5kW turbine, it probably works for 3 miners (remember the 20/80 rule) Smiley

You need a grid tie inverter if you plan to use the grid as "battery", if your setup is separate from the grid, a regular inverter is enough.

In principle you need about 200~250v 50/60hz AC for the PSUs, how you achieve that is left to you... You might need extra things for protection and stabilization, depending. And don't forget the ground.
1528  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: May 08, 2020, 04:56:52 AM
I chose 900W in the configuration with default fan and temp settings and it auto tuned my S9i to 825W at 11.9TH. That's 69.3 W/TH
Another S9i I chose 800W with default fan and temp settings and it auto tuned to 723W at 10.4TH. That's 69.5W/TH. It always ends up with a watt reading lower than what you choose on the configuration page.

Can you give us some details, in method of measuring, which kind of mains voltage, and what exact S9 model/speed you used to achieve this? Its quite impressive to have under 70 W/TH actually Cheesy

Any idea why the CHIP temps report is not working? (i am using the latest version)

with the 2019 version have no problems...

Antminer S9J

It would be nice if you could show us the logs so we could see if there are any hints, could you paste them into hastebin or similar text sharing site?

If you decide to paste them in the forum, make sure to use the [code][/code] bbcode for the log output text.
1529  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Wind Turbine and power supply? on: May 08, 2020, 01:36:43 AM
Quick question, could a single 400 watt wind turbine and 2 batterys and a 6000w inverter power 3 s9 ant miners at 1350 watts per miner. I’m not too in-depth with electricity but trying my best to learn.

If the turbine is only 400W how does that suddenly become 1400W X3?

I think you would need 4 of these turbines per miner, but the inverter seems adequate. Forget the batteries.

If your inverter is a grid tie inverter, then you could supplement the missing power from the grid.
1530  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Project Covid-19 : An approach to support the Bitcoin community on: May 07, 2020, 03:48:13 PM
Abstract: From over last six months I am living in a foreign country which can be called third world county as Westerners and Europeans like to call it. I have an established business here. I was too late to fly back to the place I live but now I can not until they open the air service. Not a big deal because I am safe here. I have enough food, money and connections to support myself for long time. Guess I am lucky. But I am having such hurting/unfair social experience in here that I could not help myself but to do my best from my position to support these people. If ever I run out of supply then I will seek help from others but for the time being, I am doing well in here, in real life1.

One thing I noticed, this middle class people who do not have enough savings, never lived in the poverty level or below poverty level, never needed to ask for money because they had/have a decent job but now some of them are in such position that they do not have a job, did not get salary for last two months, their employer is not telling them about the future of their current job and all shit. These people are in deep trouble but these same group of people are too shy to ask financial help from others too. They will not eat for two days but is not going to ask money from you. I discovered it in person.

Well it seems you made an interesting campaign, Poker for aid?

In that paragraph you just described what happened to my country, during the past 5 years or more. And the one thing i have noticed, is that with the pandemic people in "wealthy" countries are experiencing this poverty thing for the first time in their lives.

It is exactly like you said. My country used to be "rich", because of the oil. There was a wealthy class in the capital and they had a saying: "Its cheap in Miami, give me two" meaning they rather go to the US to buy things because it was cheaper. This happened in the 70ies and 80ies for a segment of society. People from my country could enter freely as tourists without needing a visa like they need today, so it was kinda like buying groceries in the weekend and come back by Monday (4 hours flight).

After the 80ies this went to slow decline, then it wasn't slow but fast, then came to power the politicians who blame it all on the free market economy, and things got worse, much, much worse.

Many people from my country faced the situation 3 years ago you people faced for the first time with the pandemic. Their only choice was to leave the country and hope to work elsewhere. Why? Because a full time job here gives you literally 3 USD a month, when the same thing would net you $250 a decade ago (yeah, ridiculous in many wealthy countries, but a "fortune" over here). Many left to work in neighbor countries (often illegally) to send some money back home, and that was still happening by the time 2020 came. The estimation was about 6 million (20%) of our people left the country this way.

Then the virus happened.

Many of them worked selling goods on the streets, or had formal jobs that closed due to quarantine. But they often live by renting a room. No work, no income, no paying rent = kicked out. Many of them living in the street started walking back to my country. And i mean literally walking hundreds of kilometers, in the middle of the pandemic no less. Often detained at checkpoints and not allowed to go on etc. To these people the situation is desperate, but i don't think any of them would ever visit this forum.

Yes third world is a term that's still often used, i guess its a reminder of the cold war, back when there was a second world (the socialist bloc). It was meant to mean the group of countries who were not affiliated with either of the superpowers, but somehow came to mean, "the non developed countries".

While i sympathize with your individual initiative for some little wealth redistribution in the world, it is unfortunately too little. Yet the big whales could do so much more. Remember, its not about giving the fish, but the fishing rod. Think about starting a business that would create jobs online that pay with bitcoin, i think what people would appreciate more in the long run is having a steady income (however small) rather than temporary relief.

Many people right now are at home and could really use a job. so think more about starting companies that would employ people online doing legit work. Then your footprint to change the situation of the "third world" would be much deeper.

1532  Local / Mercado y Economía / Re: Venezuela otra vez... on: May 02, 2020, 10:50:41 PM

Hombre, ¿y si EEUU agrede, porqué nosotros no? ¿y si EEUU miente, porqué nosotros no?

1533  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Starting to mine | Which ASIC to buy? | New or second hand? on: May 02, 2020, 10:29:52 PM
The incovenient I see on bitmain is that the power suply is not in pack with the miner

That's not inconvenient its convenient. If it pops, you can replace it easily. And, you can use different PSUs, either more capable or less depending on your goal.

S9s running efficiently should use less than 1000w (possibly 800w).

If you buy in bulk, you can get them for as low as 25$, probably less after halving when many miners start dumping them.

Of course, stick to S9, S9j and S9i, avoid the rest.

This reminds me a lot of the S7s before the halving of 2016...
1534  Other / Politics & Society / Re: the internet is becoming very very regulated ,how do we fix it ? on: May 02, 2020, 10:21:14 PM
Neither TOR nor VPN will help us if the government has access to almost any servers (even foreign ones) and simply removes information that is not convenient for them very quickly, especially if this information concerns exposing their illegal activities.

Tor works when used correctly. And that means, no servers outside of Tor. As long as people think Tor is some sort of cloak for them to keep using the normal internet, chances are high they will make mistakes.

But if you put your server, forum whatever as a hidden service (so called .onion address) ONLY, then there is nothing to fear if you have the common sense of never using details that could help others track you down.

So the answer is simple: Help populate the Tor network and forget about the normal internet. You don't have to run an exit node, in fact you should NOT run an exit node (your IP will get blacklisted into oblivion). Being a bridge (published or not) is perfectly fine.
1535  Other / Off-topic / Re: The Ending of Covid-19 on: May 02, 2020, 10:07:25 PM
It's funny when some countries are slowly relaxing the restrictions, but little do they know that'd cause some new clusters or spikes in cases.
But not every country can keep all their people under lockdown because they don't have much reserve to survive for too longer that is why they wanted to bring some cashflow with lot of restrictions.

And this is why its going to stay for as long as it takes for the vaccine to be made. Relax isolation, numbers bump, isolate again...

Rather than funny it is sad. Sending people out to work as sacrifice...
1536  Other / Off-topic / Re: Bloody ants in my laptop :'( on: May 02, 2020, 10:02:47 PM
Realising the truth, ants are most hardworking creature on this planet. They also are hygenic /clean creature which will not destroy my laptop and I know it. Also so far, there is no news or nothing related to ants spreading any kind of disease. Ants are common. You are reacting to ants like those are some huge pandemic spreading illness or any kind of virus.

Speaking truth, I do not care if they are spreading any virus or anything but what I am ONLY concerned is about taking them out from my laptop forever.

I lost a digital camera like this. To me its not a joke, and i can't even imagine why they chose it as a nice place to make a nest... In fact the queen decided to use the flash lamp as the queen chamber, so it was perfectly visible once you took the camera out of its fabric bag where i was left for months unattended.

Ants may be clean, but they are also somewhat conductive. So they start crossing things with different polarities causing little shorts here and there. Often their bodies keep piling until they can make enough current flow the wrong way and damage something.

So no, its not harmless, you should get rid of them.

I never used laptops on the lap, because i find that incredibly uncomfortable (besides fabric is bad for cooling).
1537  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why there is no Standard Marketplace like Amazon with BTC as payment method?? on: May 02, 2020, 09:47:08 PM
They won't do it unless somebody else does and starts taking a bit of their customers.

Someone with capital should start a company in a Bitcoin friendly country (Bahamas?) and build that marketplace. They could do their own payment processing with btcpay or such, i don't think this would be impossible to do.

In Latin America we also have Mercadolibre...
1538  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mining: Why choose Solo or Pool? on: May 02, 2020, 09:02:33 PM
Couple of months? The whole of 2020 they haven't found a single block! They are way past the average, they are just having a REALLY bad luck, and the opposite just occurred to another pool with even less hashrate that should on average find 1 block per year, but already found two in a row this year.

So yes, good luck for some, bad luck for others, in the end it all averages.

But what does this mean for the miner? Variance. With solo mining, you are playing this game alone, like you are your own pool. And your little hash rate probably means it will take you years (on average) to find a block. But you can be lucky, or not...

So those doing solo miner simply don't care to lose their money mining, its a lottery to them. You see many using obsolete miners in the unlikely event they get lucky and hit it.

When you are in a pool, you will get compensated according to the share of your hashing contribution. Higher hashrate pools find blocks more often and can pay more often.

So to simplify: solo mine means you might never see any reward while with a pool you are going to get a small but more constant reward.

PPLNS pools only pay when they actually find blocks, while the others (PPS) assume the risk to pay even without finding anything but need to keep a large sum as reserve always, which is why they have higher fees.
1539  Local / Mercado y Economía / Re: Venezuela otra vez... on: May 02, 2020, 08:33:50 PM

1540  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: May 02, 2020, 07:22:38 PM
Are you trying with the latest release from yesterday? There is apparently a new setting to limit the lowest frequency to try, but by default it will try all the way down to 155 Mhz (and all the way up to 950Mhz).

Maybe this answers Kano's question:

CGminer, BOSminer, and GPL Compliance

There has also been some discussion recently amongst miners about GPL compliance when it comes to CGminer. We want to be clear about how this applies to Braiins OS.

Up until our latest major release (March 2020), Braiins OS was built on top of CGminer, which was using Bitmain’s FPGA code as a backend. This component from Bitmain was closed. We built BOSminer from scratch to replace CGminer in order to make everything open-source, including replacing the previously closed FPGA IP core with our own open core.

In other words, the above paragraph simply means that Braiins OS users do not need to worry about this GPL matter because we are not using CGminer or Bitmain’s FPGA IP core.

Additionally, it should be noted that we own the IP for BOSminer and we have a contributor license agreement in place for it. Braiins OS is released free of charge under the GNU GPLv3, while Braiins OS+ has its own software license agreement. We reserve the right to use this software however we see fit, including providing commercial licensing to individuals should they be interested. If any hardware manufacturers want to implement BOSminer, we will be happy to accept their commits to the public repository and keep this open standard for the mining community through the contributor license agreement.

We are focused on continuing to develop our products and supporting our users as best as we can. What others in the industry do in regards to this matter is up to them.
