But if you have a good amount of btc in your wallet and this happened... would almost all of you immediately head back to the US and get the seed and then try it to see if its correct?
I wouldn't have landed myself in a position where I needed access to my coins and only had one method of doing so, because as you have just discovered, that becomes a single point of failure. If I was away on holiday for a few weeks, maybe, but if I was going to be away from home for months or years then I would have figured out a secure way to take a couple of back ups with me.

its the same result whether i go back this week or few weeks from now.  Is that bad logic?
No, you are correct. The critical points were to confirm the seed phrase when you first wrote it down, and to arrange to take it with you when you left the country, both of which it is obviously far too late for now. Whether you go back now or in a few weeks is more-or-less irrelevant, provided your seed phrase isn't compromised/stolen/damaged/destroyed in the intervening few weeks.

Like if you guys had almost everything in your wallet such as almost all your money to your name to this and this happened say like 80 percent or 90 percent of everything you had, would you be thinking about it day/night until you get access to your seed to see if it works?
Again, I wouldn't have landed myself in the position of a single point of failure preventing me from accessing my bitcoin. I also wouldn't have 90% of my net worth in any single asset or stored on any single device or in any single location. Once you get all this sorted, you need to re-examine your general security practices.

Well here is my issue.  Im outside the US the majority of the time.  I go back to visit a few times a year only.  I thought leaving the seed there is fine because I didnt feel safe carrying my seed with me on a piece of paper when traveling.  Such as imagine you go through the airport and suddenly you had an issue and they take your belongings or things like that.  If they have you seed on a piece of paper, if they know what it is, they could hack you. Does that make sense or its complete paranoia?  Like i feel like having your seed with you on a piece of paper even in you personal item isn't that safe.  Now what would be your recommendation for someone in my position.  Basically all year around, Im outside the US.  I come back to the US only few times a year and few weeks each time... so rarely more than month and a half while staying in the US.  How would you get the seed to the outside US country that you stay at.  Back then what i did was literally type my seed on lastpass/keepass and my seed was there... so i didn't need to have physical seed.

Yea back then... i wanted to know if there was way to confirm my seed was right.  Someone said you could download the app on the ledger s but i didnt felt safe since i heard you should never enter your seed in certain places and then i thought... what if the app on ledger s got hacked etc.  Like i heard this with google chrome and play store etc. But how long has that program where it check your seed in nano ledger s been there for?  Has it been there for a long time?  I think it was last year someone said this and i didn't do it because it didn't feel safe to me.

Well how would you suggest i handle this situation with the single point of failure?  I never meant to have 90 percent of my net worth in a single asset... it was much less a while back when the price was low... then it went up etc.  So you say if you had a good amount of btc, you would have gotten two or three nano ledger s and split them a few ways?
1602  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Battery Question? on: August 30, 2020, 09:43:43 AM
How do you know the secure element inside is destroyed?  How would you know?
Once the board and all the chips are in tiny pieces (or "dust" if you hit it long enough)... disolved in acid... or a big blobby molten charred mess... it's fairly safe to assume the secure element is destroyed. Tongue

The internals aren't much... pry open the case before starting and the point of destruction of the internals would be fairly obvious.

I don't know why but I regretted not sending the btc to coinbase/binance in the meantime when my nano ledger s had that dimmed light.  I mean have you heard of cases of coinbase or binance accounts getting hacked?  I keep some coins there in binance but very little but i never felt concerned of my funds in binance.
Yes, Binance got hacked once: https://www.wired.com/story/hack-binance-cryptocurrency-exchange/

There have been other "big name" hacks like Bitfenix, Cryptopia and of course Mt Gox... and a lot of smaller name exchanges that have been hacked over the years. Have a look here: https://selfkey.org/list-of-cryptocurrency-exchange-hacks/

There is a reason people say "don't leave large amounts on exchanges"... as always: "not your keys, not your coins."

Thanks for that picture description.  But i dont think i will do this as that is very extreme.

Yes i heard binance got hacked before but did their customers lose coins though?  Yes hear of mt gox and cryptopia.  But has coinbase/gemini/bitstamp had cases where customers accounts got hacked?  I thought binance hack affected few users only but did those users get reimbursed?  Which accounts got targeted/hacked or was it random?  I recall i heard one specific coin got hacked by users in a big exchange and i believe it was binance... so it was only ppl who had a certain coin?
1603  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano X vs. Nano S on: August 30, 2020, 09:40:06 AM
It cost 130 for the nano x and 85 for the nano s.
The Nano S is currently listed for $59. You can always find a code to get a discount though, usually around 20%. Ask on here or on https://www.reddit.com/r/ledgerwallet/.

I see you could do up to 20 coins on the nano s and up to 100 on the x?
The limit is far less than 20 now, and it was only ever that high if you picked specific coins (for example, all the forks of BTC, since they use many of the same dependencies). If you want to install totally different coins like BTC, ETH, and XMR, then you are probably limited to 3 or 4 coins at once on the Nano S. It is trivial to uninstall and reinstall different coins, though.

But could you use the nano ledger x without a computer?  The one issue i see with the nano ledger s is if you want to transfer btc while outside and not having your computer, you can't do that.
The Nano X has bluetooth and can therefore be used with any smartphone which also has bluetooth. The Nano S does not have bluetooth, but can be used with a cable with Android phones (but not Apple phones).

Thanks for response.  I saw some codes discount on reddit.  But its hundred percent safe to use it right?  So the ppl that offer these codes, they basically get a percentage each time someone buys a nano ledger product like a referal?

Okay so with a nano ledger s, you always need a laptop with you to send the btc right?  But with the ledger x... its basically on the go... if you want to send it to someone in public without having a computer, well you can?  Now with the nano ledger x... you can always use it connected to a computer like with the nano ledger s right?
1604  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Won't Turn On Help on: August 30, 2020, 09:37:36 AM
Hi well i can't wipe it because it doesn't turn on.

Well i dont have my seed with me at the moment.  The only other wallet i have now is electrum on my laptop which i kept my coins in a long time ago before i transferred them to my ledger s when i got that years ago.

Yea i want to know if they do repairs as in repair it... then could send it back to you without it being reset.

Also I thought about this idea but this probably is going to sound very bad.

I could contact a person who know where my seed is.  The thing is again im outside the US now so i dont have physical access to it.  It would be an extremely bad idea if they facetime me or whatsapp or skype me on their phone and tell me the phrase right?  Then that way, i could try it on electrum to see if it works?  With all the hacking and things, there is always a chance someone could pick up what is said online or read out right even in in whatsapp or facetime?  I thought another way would be say a few phrases on facebook... a few on a phone call and a few on whatspp etc.... to spread it out... but that is a completely bad idea?  I mean i know having them email me the seed via email is about as worst as you can get.  But what about speaking to them on phone, whatsapp, skype, facebook and mention a few of the phrases each time?  Heck, email the last few phrases via email?  But that is all a bad idea right?

1605  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Current Shipping Time and Carrier? on: August 30, 2020, 09:32:29 AM
Dude, there's no need to post multiple times in a row, just edit your old posts.
1. Can't recall it from my head but free shipping probably happens on Nano S too for promotional purpose.
2. The price is obviously cheaper now since Nano X is available.
3. Free shipping and express shipping will obviously have differences in the time it takes to deliver your wallet. So if you want it fast, express is your choice. If not, free shipping is better
4. Yea Ledger ships from France.
5. Yea there's no harm using promotional code, just like you guess it's for marketing. Pay attention to the website you visit and don't fall for phishing.

Hi.  Well if i go to ledger site directly and order it and say someone on reddit post the promo codes, there is zero risk using anyones promo code for a discount on ledger site right?  I know that might sound like a dumb question but i just want to be sure.

1606  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Battery Question? on: August 30, 2020, 01:27:06 AM
Hi okay didn't know about aliexpresss.

Okay make sense that you destroy it as a small price to pay.  But i paid over one thirty for it though which was a lot for me.

How do you know the secure element inside is destroyed?  How would you know?

Also im curious about you and others.  But if you have a good amount of btc in your wallet and this happened... would almost all of you immediately head back to the US and get the seed and then try it to see if its correct?  I basically have everything there.  So I was going to head back this week.  I was planning to head back to the US anyways in a few weeks but these few weeks, I had things to do here for the next few weeks.  But I did thought... well if i go back this week for few weeks later, if my seed where i store it is correct or not... its the same result whether i go back this week or few weeks from now.  Is that bad logic?  Again, i did not confirm my seed when i wrote it years ago but i did make sure i wrote it correctly when doing it.

Like if you guys had almost everything in your wallet such as almost all your money to your name to this and this happened say like 80 percent or 90 percent of everything you had, would you be thinking about it day/night until you get access to your seed to see if it works?  When this happened and i noticed my nano ledger s did not turn on today, i was freaked out but not that freaked out because i knew the screen had issues with the dimming.

1607  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Battery Question? on: August 29, 2020, 11:56:27 PM
I took a look on amazon.com and the cable you mention seem to cost ten dollars... the cheaper one on amazon is like 5 dollars.  Of course i can't buy it now since im outside the US.

But where do you find these for one - two dollars?

Okay that idea with ziplock bag and those silica packs is interesting.

Well, the reason you wouldn't return it is because of security reasons right?  Like if you send it back to them, and somehow they enter the pin correctly even with three tries, then you are at risk?

How would you securely destroy the old one?

Well if you return old one and they send new one... then say you have your coins in the new one you bought.  Then once they send you a replacement, then you could send the coins from the new one you bought... to the replacement one... then wouldn't you be secure?  But during the time they have it until you receive it... well there is a security issue if somehow they got into your broken nano ledger?
1608  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Battery Question? on: August 29, 2020, 10:43:26 PM
Hi.  I had no idea it was just a micro usb cable.  Thought it was a special ledger nano cable.  Also i don't think i ever used a micro usb cable before.  I can't use my iphone charging cable for it right?

Do you think its worth buying one right now where im located now to try to see if that would work?

Well would you say its better keeping it in a box as oppose to having it in a fanny pack zipped up if my apartment is humid?  Again almost all apartments here are humid where located... no escaping that unless you want AC on all the time.

Yea i know i should have gotten a replacement months ago but issue was i was outside the us... and still am at the moment.

You agree best option is buy a new one first and then put the seed in right?  Then if seed works, send back old nano ledger for a replacement so i have an extra one?  Like don't just send the old one back to a new one for replacement first right?  I mean, i know i could type in my seed in electrum wallet on my laptop but i haven't used or keep btc in it for a while but i know the wallet is generally safe.  I just haven't downloaded the new version of electrum for long time because i kept my coins in my ledger.
1609  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Current Shipping Time and Carrier? on: August 29, 2020, 10:38:18 PM
Does anyone here have a promo code that i could use?

I seen some on reddit where some ppl said they get like 20% off with it.  But using those codes, there is no risk with it right?  I assume when someone post those promo codes, then they get some money back as its like they referred you to buy one with their code right?
1610  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Battery Question? on: August 29, 2020, 10:17:26 PM
Speaking of humidity, what if you keep your nano ledger s in the box it already came with?  Does humidity affect that or it would have no effect if its inside the box?  I put my nano ledger in like a fanny pack zipped up.  But again, I left it there for a long time before this and had none of these issues.

Where do you guys store your ledger nano then?  I mean it could be humidity but then again i read of ppl who said their devices dimmed and dimmed and won't turn on and none of them mentioned humidity.  But humidity most likely played a role here?

But is there any risk of going to a repair shop or trying to find someone that could fix it if it indeed doesn't work anymore?  But doing this would mean you definitely can't get a replacement right?  I will most likely buy a new one from ledger... then send this one old back to them for a new one.  So i have two nano ledger s.  That is probably best option?  But yea i like to know if there has been cases where someone couldn't turn their nano ledger on for a while... then got it to work again.
1611  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Battery Question? on: August 29, 2020, 10:13:43 PM
I posted on reddit and a person who appears to be related to ledger says they would replace the device but i didn't hear anything about them fixing it and sending the old one back to you... which is what i want to know if that is possible.

I would get the same nano ledger s... i mean what are my other options?  Its basically nano ledger s or x or trezor right?  I heard other brands but those don't sound good.

Well i have my seed but i dont have it on me at the moment, its back in the US.  And i mentioned this as well... i never tested the seed ever.

Yea the ledger doesn't turn on when connected to my laptop.  Do you think its possible its a cable issue and getting a new cable could fix it?  But where would i buy a new cable?  Again, im outside the US at the moment.

I plan to fix these issues when im back in the US.

Yea i did thought... sending a hardware wallet to them and them fixing it and sending it back to you... even if its ledger... couldn't their technicians compromise it somehow and thats why ppl say only get sealed nano ledger s?

1612  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano X vs. Nano S on: August 29, 2020, 09:41:58 PM
What are the additional pros of the nano x vs the s?  It cost 130 for the nano x and 85 for the nano s.  For me, the nano s was fine when it worked.  I see you could do up to 20 coins on the nano s and up to 100 on the x?  I dont have more than 5 different coins max so i would not need 100 different coins etc.

But could you use the nano ledger x without a computer?  The one issue i see with the nano ledger s is if you want to transfer btc while outside and not having your computer, you can't do that.  But i recall there was a device where you could do it on the go without any thing... is that the nano ledger x or is that something else?  I think that is the nano ledger blue or something like that? I recalled it had a big screen like an ipad.
1613  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Current Shipping Time and Carrier? on: August 29, 2020, 09:39:46 PM
I also noticed this right now.  If you buy a nano ledger x as oppose to nano ledger s... there is free dhl shipping.  Was that how it was like before?  It cost 130 dollars for the nano ledger x and around 85 for the nano ledger s.  So its a no brainer just get the nano ledger s right?  Again the nano ledger s worked fine for me back then when it worked.

1614  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Current Shipping Time and Carrier? on: August 29, 2020, 09:33:49 PM
Also does anyone here have a discount code that is available or there isn't any now?
1615  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Nano Ledger S Current Shipping Time and Carrier? on: August 29, 2020, 09:33:26 PM
I'm looking at nano ledger s site right now as I need to buy a new one.  Shows the item is 59 dollars and a sales tax in my state.  So it would be around 67 dollars or so total.

It also shows Express shipping with DHL of 4-5 business days and that cost another 18 dollars or so.  So the total price of it is around 85 dollars almost.  I know a while back nano ledger had discounts where someone said it was 50 dollars and once was like 42 dollars total.  But back then, was there option for free shipping?

I"m asking about people who are located in the US.

When i bought my nano ledger s years ago, i recalled i paid like 130 dollars for it because it was much more expensive, because... i paid for express DHL shipping, it still would been over 100 dollars for it.  But has nano ever offered free ground shipping or it always has been express shipping?  I like to know those of you who bought it when it was a huge discount like when it was under 50 dollars months ago.  I recalled months ago, it was like 40 dollars before tax and like 43 total after tax that someone else said.. but did they give you option for free shipping?

Also all ledgers come straight from France right?

I'm pretty certain years ago when i bought my nano ledger s, there was other shipping options where i believe it was free shipping or ups shipping that cost less?  I assume the situation now is because of covid?  Or does nano ledger only offer express shipping with their packages?

1616  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Won't Turn On Help on: August 29, 2020, 09:18:31 PM
Has there been cases of ledger repairing the screen without wiping the device though?  If they could do that... that would be great.  If there are any stories about this, then that would make me feel better as a backup. But if they do this, well their technician better make sure to never enter a pin because i read if you do it three times wrong, well your ledger s resets.  But if they fix the screen or do something to it... that wouldn't wipe the device?  Also you wouldn't need to be concerned about a technician doing something to it right?

So right now you suggest buy a new one from ledger first.  Enter the seed to see if it works on the nano ledger s.  If it works, then great.  But if it doesn't... then ask ledger if they could repair my old one and then send it in?  But has there been any cases of them repairing it and it not resetting is the big question here.
1617  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Nano Ledger S Won't Turn On Help on: August 29, 2020, 09:18:02 PM
Hey all.  I posted this in the hardware wallet subforum but also wanted to post it here since many people read this subforum more and would get more views/replies here.  If this is a problem, moderator, I understand but I really appreciate if anyone has a nano ledger s could answer this or reply since most people rarely view the hardware wallet subforum.

I bought my nano ledger s about a long time ago.  Earlier this year, I notice it had a dimmed screen but I didn't do anything about this as I was out of the country.  I still am out of country now but will be heading back to the US soon because of this.

Now my nano ledger s does not even turn on when connecting it to my laptop.  I had mentioned months ago when I connected it to my laptop, the screen was very dim and hard to read.  This was maybe 7 months ago.

I haven't used it in some time nor did any updates to it mainly because I been out of the country for a very long time and my seed is back home in the US.  I also did not do any updates at all to my nano ledger s since November of last year... that was the last update I did... mainly because I was concerned an update would brick my nano ledger s since the screen was extremely dim light.  So basically I haven't touched it for months nor connected it to my laptop.  Someone told me they had their nano ledger s dim light as well and they bought a new one and gave that dimmed light one to a friend and they said it still works for them.  So I figure even if its dim light, no big deal and then once I get back to the US, i enter my seed my the dim light one to make sure it works... then buy a new nano ledger s .

The thing is i wrote my seed a few years ago when i first go the nano ledger s but I never entered it into my nano ledger s to confirm it but i did check it many times to make sure i wrote it correctly.  I recalled someone said a while back you could type it in the app on the nano ledger s to confirm it works but I never did it because at the time, I thought it was not safe even though the app is on the nano ledger s.

Has anyone here had their nano ledger s not turn on and if so, is there any way to get it to turn back on somehow?  I will be heading back to the US soon and getting a new nano ledger s because of it.

I had considered sending my btc to my electrum wallet on my computer in the meantime or even send it to exchange like binance months ago since I wasn't going to head back to the US for months but I figure that isn't as safe as keeping it in my nano ledger s.

This is very frustrating for me now because of this.

Does anyone have any advice here?  I want to try everything I can to see if I can get the nano ledger s to turn on.  I will be buying a new one once I head back to the US no matter what but now I will have to go back soon to get one because of this.
1618  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano X vs. Nano S on: August 29, 2020, 09:13:27 PM
Hey all.  So no matter what I will get a new hardware wallet because my nano ledger s doesn't turn on anymore.

Is getting the nano s still the preferred option here as oppose to the nano x?
1619  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Battery Question? on: August 29, 2020, 08:37:02 PM
Okay I will contact ledger support.  The thing is months ago when i had the dim screen issue, i contacted them about it and they said they will reply back to me.  They never did.  So during that time, I didn't do anything since I was out of the country and still at the moment... outside the US.  So i figure i buy a new one when i head back to the us but have not.

Well my screen had no issue for 1.5 years or so, then i saw the dimmed screen and was concerned.  When i saw dimmed screen, i recall connecting it to my laptop a few times after it... it still worked in the sense that you could enter your pin etc but the screen is very hard to read... so i didn't do any firmware update or do any transfers etc.  Then now i see it doesn't even turn on.

Yea i want to know has there been cases of someone sending nano ledger back to them... they fix it... and it doesn't reset... that is the big question here.  If so, that would be good.  Someone mentioned you could ask ledger if they could repair the screen ... but again im not sure if its the screen itself or the device itself.  Well i have my seeds written down and its back home in the US.. but the thing is i never entered my seed on any device to confirm it.  That is a concern.

I will definitely buy a new device once i head back to the US.  I am planning to head back to the US very soon because of this.  I'm guessing best advice is don't do anything to the ledger s... buy new device, enter seed on the new nano ledger s.  That is the only thing i can do now right?  My plan originally months ago when the nano ledger s screen was dimmed was when i go back to the US, enter my seed on the dimmed screen just to confirm it works... then buy a new nano ledger s.  But since it doesn't turn on now... i wanted to know if there was a way to turn on the screen somehow.  Because someone says nano ledger might be able to repair it but could they repair it without resetting the device.

Anyone else have advice based on what i mentioned here?
1620  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Battery Question? on: August 29, 2020, 07:44:19 PM
I wouldn't do anything to your current Nano at this point.

Since you say you haven't seen your seed phrase in months/years, and you never checked it was correct when you wrote it down, that Ledger Nano might be the only way to recover your coins. Although you cannot do anything with it at the moment, I would assume Ledger would be able to repair the screen without wiping the device. If you go messing around with it trying to fix the screen and reset it, only to discover your seed phrase is missing or incorrect, then your coins are lost forever.

Buy a new one (or some other hardware wallet), recover your seed to it, check you can access all your coins, and then you can go about trying various things with your old Nano.

I like to also ask.  There is no way my nano ledger s does not turn on because I haven't did an update in a long time right?
No. The Ledger hardware does not have a built in "kill timer" which will brick your device if you do not update it in time.

Hi.  Well i bought this nano ledger 2.5 years ago and wrote the seed on piece of paper.  I never entered the seed on any device.
