Wait you could use any two factor authorization on coinbase or gemini even though they only recommend like two options?  But gemini doesn't allow you to use google authenicator right?  I do use google authenticator for other sites and I find it okay.

Well I have no android so can't use Aegis.  Only have iphone.  I never heard of tofu.  I took a look at apple store and it has good reviews but not that many users.  So that is no concern?

Again I was planning to use google authenticator for both coinbase and gemini until they said they didn't have it for gemini.

But can you use google authenticator, authy or tofu on both iphones?  So you have it in both phones in case one breaks?  But what do you need to write down as the backup?  Is it like a long security key or something?  Or is it a picture?  I know you need to write this down.

The thing that is confusing is people say coinbase gives you a backup key for google authenticator but can you write it down anytime?  Now if you were to lose access to it... same with authy with gemini, you eventually can get your account back right?  Because with coinbase, that happened to me a while back and I was able to get reverified with my documents without my broken phone etc.

Can you use aegis on both coinbase and gemini though?

This is used with the iphone correct?  I do not have a yubikey.

Someone suggested don't use authy for gemini.  Well that is certainly better than sms number right?  So what do I use there?
623  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best 2 Factor Authorization for Coinbase and Gemini on: December 30, 2021, 07:32:21 AM
Wait is the QR code a picture you take?  Or its numbers/characters you write?  Doesn't make sense if you take a picture of it... since well that picture would be on that phone of yours which will most likely be the phone that stops working.

How long or short is that seed phrase or code?  Can someone give me an example of how long it should look?  The thing is it can't be that much characters right?  And by that i mean like 50 plus... because you would need to write it down and make sure you it is correct and that is easy to make a mistake writing it.  And well you aren't suppose to store it online so you can't just copy/paste it to a password manager right?

I want to use two factor authorization on my phone so that would mean google authenticator or authy.
624  Economy / Exchanges / Re: 2 Factor Authorization for Coinbase and Gemini on: December 30, 2021, 07:28:33 AM
Do you use coinbase or gemini now?  I assume not since you say you don't remember backing up a QR code?  Is there a seed phrase then?  That is what i read on coinbase.  Again years ago I used coinbase with the google authenticator but phone didn't work and I did not have the backup... I don't even remember if it was a secret phrase or QR code etc.

625  Other / Beginners & Help / Best 2 Factor Authorization for Coinbase and Gemini on: December 30, 2021, 07:07:09 AM
Looking at coinbase, they have google authenticator.  I used it years ago with them but then my phone broke and I couldn't get into my account for a while until coinbase reverified me.  But was I suppose to write down a coinbase two factor google authenticator key?  Or was I suppose to take a picture?  Is this the preferred 2FA for coinbase?

On gemini, it seems they do not have google authenticator.  It seems authy is what they offer.  So that is what one should choose?  But when make this your 2FA, you need to write a code down right?  Or take a picture?

So google authenticator for coinbase and authy for gemini?

What happens if you have no access to your phone?  Do you need to make sure you have a backup copy of the code?

What if you have two phones?  Could you install it in both phones so in case something happens to your main phone, you still have it on your backup phone?

Want to set this up correctly for coinbase and gemini.

627  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Using Waves With Nano Ledger S on: December 27, 2021, 05:39:52 AM
is there anyone here that has waves and uses it with the nano ledger s?  My waves are stored in the waves exchange desktop client.  I have a waves seed phrase that is associated with the account so I have to enter my password each time to log into the waves exchange client.  I have a nano ledger s where i store btc and bch with it.   With the waves seed phrase, you can restore it on a computer.

From what I am reading, if you want to move your waves that has a seed phrase to nano ledger, the first thing you need to do is a sign up a new account on the waves exchange client that connects to the nano ledger?   You then create a new password with it.  Then after this is done, you need to plug your nano ledger into your computer and install the waves app on the nano ledger?

Then you log into your waves exchange desktop client with your password which will give you access to your seed phrase waves account. Then you send a test amount of waves from your seed phrase wallet to the waves account associated with nano ledger?  This confuses me here because you cannot use ledger live with waves.  So how exactly are you suppose to send the waves to it?  So you would use the waves address displayed in the nano ledger for you to send to that would also display on the laptop screen?

So after you send all your waves to the nano ledger, then you need the nano ledger every single time you receive or send waves from it right?  I know you have to use waves exchange with nano ledger but this seems very confusing.  So what happens if you have other coins like waves community tokens that you want to send etc?  Or say btc in a waves wallet you want to send?  What about when you want to stake or unstake?  You need the nano ledger for any of these processes?

Now assuming you send all your waves to nano ledger, does this mean your wave seed phrase is thus useless since those waves are now in the nano ledger?  Thus let say you only have btc and bch in your nano ledger.  Your nano ledger seed phrase now contains your btc, bch and waves?

So having your waves and using it with the nano ledger s is going to make your coins secure because no waves can be sent or any transaction be done inside the waves exchange client... without nano ledger allowing it?   This seems very confusing because you are using the waves client with it.

My waves are stored in a seed phrase with a password on the laptop.  Thus I use the waves exchange client to store waves.  I have a nano ledger s.  Who here uses a nano ledger s with waves and recommend it?

So basically having your waves and using it nano ledger s is going to make your coins secure because no waves can be sent or any transaction be done inside the waves exchange client... without nano ledger allowing it?   But what about if you are trading coins or staking/unstaking waves?  This seems very confusing.
629  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Firmware Update? on: December 25, 2021, 11:05:48 PM
I do see firmware is available and option to update firmware. Shows Update Firmware to 2.1.0 is available.  I am using firmware 2.0 still.

I also see that the apps I have installed below have updates available as I am using these

Bitcoin  1.6.3

Bitcoin Cash 1.6.3

Bitcoin Gold 1.6.3

I can click on update all and it would all go to version 2.0.0 for each of these. My question is... do I update all first... before I do the update firmware?  Or the other way around?

Also my ledger live is the latest one as Ledger Live 2.36.3

Want to make sure before I do this firmware update.

Did anyone here regret doing this update?  I saw some people on reddit ask how they want to rollback to the old one but that certainly isn't possible right?

The thing though is if I do not update my ledger live now, I won't be able to for many months due to me not having the seed with me.  Thus I don't want to be doing a firmware update when I'm in another location without the seed.  So would you recommend to do this firmware update now or not?  Because there is a risk where if another firmware updates let say happens in a few months and say its now firmware 2.2 and you still using firmware 2.0, there is a better chance of something going wrong in the firmware update when it goes from an older version to newest one compared to like 2.1.0 to 2.2 right?

I did the step HCP recommended a while back.

When I typed this in windows powershell...

Get-FileHash ledger-live-desktop-2.36.3-win-x64.exe -Algorithm SHA512 | Format-Table -AutoSize -Wrap

It is suppose to show this after you click enter to confirm it matches.

70e4748f68bb949cc048c9db1b2887a865625e25ed071355f24c36e9d0796d4d5aa56ac359fd763 6cd3a522fc206985c514e5be17125d1f0e30b3a7b92dbdabf

It shows below which is the correct letters and numbers... except how come what I bolded below is all in CAPITAL LETTERS?  Can someone here confirm this?  Last time when I did this with an earlier version of ledger live, I was pretty sure it was all in lowercase.  But now its all in uppercase?

SHA512 - 70e4748f68bb949cc048c9db1b2887a865625e25ed071355f24c36e9d0796d4d5aa56ac359fd763 6cd3a522fc206985c514e5be17125d1f0e30b3a7b92dbdabf

Also to the right of the bolded above... I see Path C:/users/jerry0/downloads/ledger-live-desktop-2.36.3-win-x64.exe.  I don't recall seeing this few months ago when I did this test with windows powershell to verify ledger live?  Just want to make sure before I install it.
632  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Reinstalling Ledger Live And Accounts On New Computer on: December 25, 2021, 07:13:48 PM
The thing is I do not recall if my funds in BTC and BCH are in nested segwit or native segwit accounts.  I am pretty sure they are not in legacy.

So I have to add all 6 of them so to speak?  Or just the nested segwit and native segwit of each BTC and BCH?

633  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Reinstalling Ledger Live And Accounts On New Computer on: December 25, 2021, 06:40:38 AM
When you open the ledger live program, you need to create a new password before you connect the nano ledger s to it right?

Also when you add the accounts, will it add multiple BTC and BCH accounts?  I remember when I added the accounts a while back, there was like two different BTC and BCH accounts.  The segwit had a balance for BTC And BCH but the other one didn't?

Well do most people who reinstall ledger live have much issue with this?  This is assuming their nano ledger s is already set up etc.  Also using a new laptop or deleting ledger live and reinstalling it... is basically the same thing here?
634  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Reinstalling Ledger Live And Accounts On New Computer on: December 24, 2021, 04:37:39 AM
I had ledger live installed on my old computer.  I had added the accounts on ledger live a while back when I connected my nano ledger s to it.  The accounts I added were btc, bch and btg.  The wallets installed on my nano ledger s are btc, bch and bitcoin gold.  I do not have a balance on bitcoin gold though.  So whenever I logged into ledger live, I see the account balances of btc and bch.

I also have to do a firmware update as I see there was one recently.  I am now using a new computer for this and need to start over.  But I believe I don't need to enter my seed though into the nano ledger right?

I know the first thing I need to do is download ledger live.  Then check to make sure the download hash file is correct.  But there still hasn't been a case where the hash file was wrong right?  I know last time HCP helped me with this when doing the checksum.

After that, I need to create a new password right on ledger live?  Then after I do that.  Do I connect my nano ledger so to it?  Or do I add accounts first?  The thing is I remember last time it added two different accounts for btc and bch and one was segwit and the other was something else?  I do recall having my coins in segwit for each btc and bch.  Thus one btc account had 0 balance. but the other had the balance.  Same for bch.

I remember you have to wait till it adds the accounts and then the balances show up right?

Then only this, do I go and update the firmware?  The last firmware update I did was back in May.  Also, I should reinstall my btc, bch and bitcoin gold apps before this update?  I know its still using the older ones.

This is my first time reinstalling everything on a new computer.  So I want to make sure I do things correctly.  Thank you.

635  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Firmware Update? on: December 22, 2021, 06:31:00 AM
I am going to need to reinstall ledger live and also do this firmware update.  So first reinstall ledger live and check the hash signature is correct.  Then add my accounts to it.

Then do this firmware update.  Did the majority of you do this firmware update?  I did read it will make your storage much less etc.

I only have btc bch stored in it.  But I do have btg wallet installed in it as well.
636  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: How To Verify the Downloaded Version of Ledger Live on: December 22, 2021, 05:26:01 AM
Okay well actually I will come back to this thread.  Reason being I have to do a install of ledger live again.  But the process is still the same right?

I also read on reddit recently that apparently the code for it was not the same?  But I heard this was only with MAC devices?

So are you telling me I cannot claim my bitcoin SV just with the electrum seed after I download the electrumsv.io wallet?  I want to make sure of this before I start the process.  I don't want to get stuck and not sure what to do.
638  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is the difference between seed phrase and private key? on: December 16, 2021, 04:17:01 AM
The private key is a very long letter/number.  But do most people write that down as well?

Nope, if you have the seed phrase there is no more need to keep a copy of your private key. Your private key, after all, is derived from your seed phrase. Having the seed phrase under your sole control means you also have the sole control of your private key. If in the event that you specifically need your private key for whatever reason, you could always extract it from your seed phrase using iancoleman's BIP39 tool.

What if you only have the private key but not the seed phrase?
