1821  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Qora | Released 16 May | 100% POS | New Source on: June 17, 2014, 06:07:04 AM
If you want to attack Qora, please read the history posts first, and learn some basic knowledge.
Or you just want to show how stupid you are?

Actually I was interested to buy some Qora and ask legitimate questions, at least I think there is nothing wrong with asking about the initial distribution. But it looks like these legitimate questions are met with hostile attitude for an unknown reason. I haven't found anything about initial distribution in the first post, am I supposed to read all the 300+ pages? This kind of answer is not a way to attract new investors, someone (gorillajam?) complained that there is no demand for Qora. Now you see why there is no demand, because for some reason you think new potential users are Qora's enemies. Do you just want to keep all qoras to yourselves and don't like newbies? Smiley

EDIT: never mind, I found the Distribution link, is it 137 people, correct?
1822  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Qora | Released 16 May | 100% POS | New Source on: June 17, 2014, 05:16:18 AM
I have no idea how Qora was distributed and to how many, I wasn't reading this thread at the time of distribution and I only read the last posts now. Is that a secret that you cannot answer? It's fine with me.
1823  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Qora | Released 16 May | 100% POS | New Source on: June 17, 2014, 04:26:41 AM
wow, Qora has its own 51% attack now? I totally missed it, but how was Qora initially distributed that someone ended up with over 50% now?
1824  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: There seems to be a case for creating CPU only coins on: June 16, 2014, 07:03:06 PM
Now, with CPU only coins will those top 100 super computers be a problem?
1825  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NXT under serious attack! Sell now! on: June 16, 2014, 06:42:55 PM
In future could be the main security weakness the brainwallet.

You don't have to use the brainwallet if you don't want to. There is already a third-party client Offspring that uses wallet.dat just like Bitcoin, and there are plans to have the official client also offer the option of wallet.dat or brainwallet, per user choice. What is your answer to my question in the first post?
1826  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NXT under serious attack! Sell now! on: June 16, 2014, 06:12:39 PM
Not many people with manly conduct so far.
1827  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NXT under serious attack! Sell now! on: June 16, 2014, 05:37:17 PM
I'll be the first to answer my own question. 1 year. After 1 year I will have no doubts. Your turn now.
1828  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Dev Sells 50% of his Bitcoin due to 51% threat. on: June 16, 2014, 05:28:28 PM
There's a fair chance this has nothing to do with 51% and Peter Todd just felt like cashing out some coins and wanted a good sounding reason.

What the heck, why would he want a reason? Is there some sort of obligation for bitcoin core devs to keep their money in bitcoins? Do they have to publicly explain when they cash out? I don't think so, it's their money they are free to do how they like.

Just human nature.  People often feel the need to explain their actions.

Can't be just human nature. He knew he would be much criticized for this act and he still did it, though he could do it without anyone noticing. No, he truely started doubting Bitcoin, that's what it is. He had a plan set up in advance and he executed it, because he believes in the need for decentralization of Bitcoin more than many people who criticize him.
1829  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / NXT under serious attack! Sell now! on: June 16, 2014, 05:16:49 PM
Just kidding Cheesy It's for you to pay attention. Now that you pay attention, I have a question for all naysayers and doubters who claim that NXT is vulnerable. How long should NXT run unbroken before you can admit it is secure enough? 1 year, 2 years?

EDIT: don't post no lols. Give your best well-thought answer you can come up with. I mean it. Look inside your doubting minds and post what you really think, however scary it may sound to admit or post publicly. Posting an honest answer requires manly conduct. Ok, let's hear from you now.

Liquid is great, as long as it's liquid on the way up or at least showing some resilience, bouncing off support levels.
1832  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Can Litecoin hold the #2 spot? Doubtful..and here are the coins who will benefit on: June 16, 2014, 02:18:55 PM
there's a need of alternative blockchains. big investors can't be so stupid to put all their money (eggs) in one basket and rely upon a unique blockchain.

Right, now you're talking. So if you extent that logic further, you will see that putting your eggs on a blockchain that just clones that of Bitcoin is not smart, why not choose one of many others available on the market that offer compelling features and have a competitive edge. See what I am driving at? As for specific alts, we can skip and not discuss this, as everybody has their own favorites.

Wow, thank you. Definitely going to look into this. Sounds like an interesting idea.

Yes, here is one example how one of Qora enthusiasts implemented the gateway:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=522102.msg7212956#msg7212956
Qora also has issues with liquidity. NXT AE helps alleviate those issues, and as it gets more popular, more trading will be taking place for NXTs.

this is a neat idea. but i bet it's troublesome - do you have a time for it? maybe someone from the community could do it? Spekulatius for example since he got the best reputation and history here on BT.

You don't need much time. Yes, all transactions will be manual, but you don't have to rush it, 24 hours time frame for deposits/withdrawals is enough, users will know in advance it's a manually operated gateway and they shouldn't expect immediate transactions. As for buying and selling on the exchange - those transactions are quick, as soon as the price is matched and the next block is generated, the order is filled, usually ~2 minutes on average.

To issue an asset (1 asset unit can be = 1 fantomcoin, you should issue an asset with more units than you actually have fantomcoins so that you have enough units to transfer to other depositors as they start using your gateway, say 100 000 - 1 000 000 units is fine) you need a NXT account funded with 1000 NXTs (~$75, well, actually a bit more than 1000, make it 1050, as you will spend some NXTs for tx fees, each time you create a sell order for example, or transfer asset units to depositors of Fantomcoins who use your gateway, you have to pay a 1 NXT fee, which will be lowered in the future but now it's 1 NXT) and some Fantomcoins as a reserve to sell to the first buyers. Then, when you process deposits of other Fantomcoin users, they will add to the liquidity of the trading pair FANTOM/NXT, but first you need some sort of reserve to set up initial sell orders at the exchange. There should also be minimum deposit and withdrawal limits set, so you don't have to process very small amounts.
1834  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Can Litecoin hold the #2 spot? Doubtful..and here are the coins who will benefit on: June 16, 2014, 01:46:59 PM
compelling features are just smoke and mirrors for naive buyers in order to work out pump and dump schemes. there are 2 things that count before anything else: longevity (hence distribution) of the coin on one side and solidity of the mining network on the other one. ltc has both, way better that any other coin. add also the liquidity factor: there's no other coin as much traded as ltc (which somedays is even more traded than btc). wanna add more: marchants already accepting it, a good team of honest devs... and so on. come on, any other coin out there has no more than maybe 200 or 300 holders as compared to btc (250k-300k), or ltc (30-50k).

Correct me if I am wrong, but Litecoin has the same kind of 51%-attack issue as Bitcoin. Now that Scrypt ASICs are becoming more and more popular, one of the pools has been hashing way too much, which doesn't add to the feeling of security of the network.

As for liquidity, yes, liquidity is there, but judging by the sliding trend, it means more and more people are getting out before losing their shirt.

If you ignore the compelling features factor, then Litecoin is redundant, because Bitcoin already does what Litecoin does. No need for compelling features = no need for the alt coin that does nothing but clones what Bitcoin does.
1835  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Can Litecoin hold the #2 spot? Doubtful..and here are the coins who will benefit on: June 16, 2014, 01:40:56 PM
Nope. I think there has been a shift in how alt coins are viewed. If you don't offer a compelling feature that makes it better than bitcoin than the response will often be: so what's the point?

+1
and I even suspect one compelling feature may not be enough these days. Competition has become very severe in the alts, Litecoin doesn't even try to compete and even declares that it doesn't want to challenge Bitcoin. I don't know what Litecoin supporters are counting on if that's the official Litecoin stance.
1836  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Can Litecoin hold the #2 spot? Doubtful..and here are the coins who will benefit on: June 16, 2014, 11:38:48 AM
by ur reckoning no crypto will take hold as a currency because of fiat use...

This is an interesting interpretation, but no, I didn't mean that.

What I meant is, no other fiat currency will take hold in a land where a native fiat currency is made legal tender. However, the Zimbabwe case is interesting to study, I believe they use USD now, and some other countries that experienced severe hyperinflation in the past also used to turn to more stable fiat currencies in their daily transactions, although taxes still had to be paid in their native currency.

As for why you assumed that I meant no crypto can take hold as a currency I am not sure. I am sure crypto will not be made legal tender in any country, meaning businesses will not be obligated to accept it. If they do, it will be their own free will. In some countries cryptos will banned. Both of these circumstances do not add to use cases for cryptos, hence we can safely assume that the competition among cryptos will be as severe as anything under the sun, because they have to compete not only for fiat users, but also to grab market share from each other. Which means there is not much space for a few cryptos, the winner will have over 90% of the market, the others will be losers.

Could you elaborate on this? First time I hear about NXT Asset exchange.

NXT Asset exchange is a decentralized exchange where all assets are priced in NXTs and they are bought and sold for NXTs.

Have you heard of Counterparty or Mastercoin? Those are also decentralized exchanges, except they rely on Bitcoin network to function, NXT has its own that runs on its own network.

Basically, someone trustworthy can create an asset, called 'Fantomcoin' in the NXT AE and sell units of that asset for NXTs to everyone who would like to buy them. That would be virtual Fantomcoins, only existing within the NXT AE. Then, if somebody wants to exchange those virtual Fantomcoins to real ones, they would send you a certain amount of virtual Fantomcoins with the operation 'Transfer asset' and include their Fantomcoin wallet address in the description. You would have to redeem those virtual units into real ones by sending them real Fantomcoins over Fantomcoin network to the specified wallet and charge them 0.5% fee for this operation.

You can also process deposits of real Fantomcoins into virtual ones, also charging a fee. If someone wants to trade their Fantomcoins on the NXT AE, they send you Fantomcoins, you transfer them the corresponding amount of 'Fantomcoin' asset units on the NXT AE and now they can sell them for NXTs.

That means you would function as a gateway NXT<->Fantomcoin, charging a 0.5% or whatever you want to charge for deposits/withdrawals, just a small exchange buro on the NXT asset exchange. Of course, you would have to build some trust first, people wouldn't send large amounts through you at the beginning, but if you can process all deposits and withdrawals within the specified time frame, say, 24 hours, the trust will eventually be built. That will be another new market for this coin. People don't have to rely on centralized exchanges any more.

You can check out nxtforum.org to get more info and ask specific questions and just get a more general overview of the technology, it's hard to explain everything in one post here.

I don't see a lot of buy orders on Poloniex for Fantomcoin, so the NXT AE could boost demand, especially since NXT doesn't have the privacy feature yet.

Hi, I would suggest setting up a gateway on NXT Asset exchange. This will create additional demand from NXTers for this coin. I believe Fantomcoin will need every new market share it can grab.
1840  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Big scam in NXT hundreds of BTC stolen with a one post on: June 16, 2014, 08:49:53 AM
NXT doesn't care, NXT is a technology, like any other, and better than most if not the best. NXT/BTC going up steadily.
