1861  Other / Politics & Society / Re: One Week in Islam: What is Wrong With This Faith??? on: June 22, 2014, 09:44:32 AM
Qataris began flooding them with the petro-dollars and Jihadi ideology.

Qataris are Jihadists?

Qatar is pouring in billions of USD every year in to poorer nations such as Bangladesh and India, in order to strengthen the hardline factions there. The moderates are being sidelined as a result of this, as they can't compete with the hardliners successfully. What the Saudis were doing a decade ago, the Qataris are doing it currently.

It seems strange to me that the country that gives us and funds a reasonably good news network like Al-Jazeera also uses that money to fund Jihad.

1862  Economy / Speculation / Re: Highest percentage of portfolio that is reasonable to keep in btc? on: June 21, 2014, 09:46:09 PM
Currently 113% in. In a week it will be a mere 100% as I pay off the remaining part of my loan. It will go no lower than that as long as the price remains cheap.

After you pay off the loan do you plan to take out another loan to buy btc?

Are there people out there cycling through loans, paying them back with profit and then taking out new ones to buy more btc?
1863  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Karpeles back to living large in one of the most expensive apartments in Tokyo on: June 21, 2014, 09:44:58 PM
He just tweeted, he thinks hes actually given something back to the victims.  IMO he hasnt done anything more than he had to do to keep himself out of prison so far.

This guy is a real piece of work. Honestly.

Shows no remorse and doesn't think he's done anything wrong.

It's acting like that makes me think he's involved in the theft.
1864  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why didn't people make a big deal about mining pools at ~33%? on: June 21, 2014, 09:42:25 PM
i'm not an expert on the bitcoin protocol, but is there any way that we can make it financially feasible without having to be forced into a pool?

Make the whole group of miners one big pool that no one controls? Payout based on shares with no variance at all?

I'm guessing that doesn't work because it's too obvious.

Such a pool exists.  It's called P2Pool.

Unfortunately, most miners are too lazy to learn what their options are.  They hear that GHash is bigges, and so they assume that "biggest" means "best".  Then without doing any additional research, they turn on their equipment and connect to the GHash pool.

I know about P2Pool but what I mean here is forced P2Pool. Like P2Pool is hardcoded into the protocol and everyone is forced to mine that way.

I assume it's not possible. Seems like a good solution otherwise, no?
1865  Economy / Economics / Re: The Open Business on: June 21, 2014, 09:40:26 PM
I published a wiki page about that where I speak about it in more details : https://github.com/NicolasDorier/Open-Business/blob/master/specification.mediawiki

Nice, checking it out now.

I really like this concept and I hope to see it evolve.
1866  Other / Off-topic / Re: Best multiplayer Game You played? on: June 21, 2014, 09:38:49 PM
Ultima Online. Best game ever! Still is, but it's too old now Sad Real awesome sandbox

www.uoforever.com

It's still pretty popular on this server. I played it for a little while recently. It does feel really old at first but you can kind of get used to it again if you played back in the 90s like I did. I still have lots of fond memories so it was nice to give it another go.
1867  Economy / Economics / Re: How high a of a market cap would bitcoin need to have to be 'stable'? on: June 21, 2014, 09:36:09 PM
Even gold with its huge market cap is still relatively volatile. Bitcoin will always be relatively volatile as long as it isn't used as a widespread unit of account.
If it gets widespread enough, it will replace fiat which will make it basicly 100% stable. Noone will ever ask: "how much dollars or euro is 1 btc worh"? Answer would be: "What is dollar or euro?"

Hehe. Pretty optimistic post . I dont think we will get there anytime soon . Maybe in like 50 years or so Cheesy
Well of course. IT can burn right now down to 0 because of some unknown bug, or it can liv eon and take over fiat. It's just one of possibilities. What is for sure is that higher it goes, more stable it will get.

Higher market cap doesn't mean stability. As pointed out by various posters, gold has trillion dollar market cap and it is no where near stable.

No, but there is a correlation of stability with market cap. As it takes more money to move the market the higher you go.

This is true. However it will be exaggerated be the fact as to how concentrated bitcoin holdings are. As the market cap get bigger, large holders of bitcoin (especially early adapters who CPU mined several blocks per day) would have a greater incentive to sell off part of their bitcoin holdings. This would cause large swings in prices.

Yeah, that's true.

And then there is always the threat that Satoshi could come back one day and decide to let loose one million coins on the market Tongue
1868  Economy / Speculation / Re: Highest percentage of portfolio that is reasonable to keep in btc? on: June 21, 2014, 09:34:37 PM
Do you guys think the same thing applies to someone who is 60 years old and nearing retirement?

I'm not 60, but if I were I would be much more conservative. And it would seem awfully risky to put so much of a retirement fund in to such a volatile instrument.
1869  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Karpeles back to living large in one of the most expensive apartments in Tokyo on: June 21, 2014, 09:30:26 PM
Can't wait to read about when someone finally decides to pay a "visit" to his apartment  Wink

I'm sure an apartment like that as some good security. I doubt he's going to have randoms knocking on his door anytime soon Tongue
1870  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why can't altcoins merge? on: June 21, 2014, 09:29:25 PM
I have a similar question: why BTC, or LTC, or DOGE developers don't add some new innovative features to their codes, to combine innovations with existing infrastructure?

Well BTC I understand. It's too risky for the devs and they already have a massive amount of 3rd parties building on top of the protocol anyway.

But I can't for the life of me figure out why a coin like LTC insists on staying in the dark ages. With all that money behind it and all this new competition you would think that the community would be stepping up to take it to the next level.

And doge, well, that's not such a serious coin so I can understand why they aren't too serious about upgrades.

Developer Earnings Calculation
---------------------
If we pin a milestone target of $ parity on the value of the coin, and assume no coins are touched, then after a year the developer will have ~$6500-$13000 worth of coin from block rewards.
Assuming a 100 hour per month commitment to the project, that equates to an hourly rate of $5.5-$11 per hour of work.

This seems really low to me. But I'd like to hear what other people think.

There is potential for higher rewards but dollar parity after a year would be a 5.25 million dollar market cap(if I calculated that right) which wouldn't be a failure at all and I would think the devs would deserve more than that.

It's all relative. If the project picks up to an $84m cap instead, and the developer has earned $200k worth of coins, without transaction fees, and with the assumption that they'll mine or buy a few hours worth of blocks themselves over the year. Then people may feel that's high.

I'd like to avoid being in a position where people feel those working on the project are excessively remunerated.. complaints of "not enough" are far nicer to deal with than complaints of "too much!".

This would be a very healthy experiment. I still consider the IPO model (paying the developer up-front) to be fair still. This would be a lot more fair than that.

I have an alternative to the IPO model and donation model which I may need to turn to in order to buy some resources for the project (templates, servers, leased rigs for testnet).

If we follow the notion that the developer is hired by the community, then developer days (monthly developer reward / 25) = ~52.5 coins could be auctioned or sold in advance at an agreed rate, and only for a reasonable amount of time, say an "advance" of "next weeks wages" at an agreed amount in return for ~250 coins.

It seems a reasonable approach to funding the early stage resources. Not quite as nice as blind donations, and not as risky as IPO.

Yeah I think it's almost always necessary to have at least some funds at the start so that there are enough resources to get the launch going properly.
1872  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin ATM Fees on: June 21, 2014, 09:24:16 PM
Does anyone have a list of Bitcoin ATM fees?

It should show both the fee and how the exchange rate is calculated.

Can u please tell me the real need of a Bitcoin ATM except for fancy ?

I think they are targeted at less technical people who want to feel like they're buying something tangible. They can hold their slip of paper with their private key in their hand and know that it has whatever value they just loaded on to it.

College Accept Bitcoin
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=651347.0

I doubt that many colleges are going to fail. A lot of these schools have huge endowments. They've been making a killing over the years with tuition. I think a lot of them could afford a price crunch.

Maybe some fringe schools might not cut it. But maybe that's just the market clearing out those who can't compete.

Are this available worldwide or only for US citizens? Are you serious about this? Count me in.  Smiley

worldwide (except for Zimbabwe and Antarctica)

Well I guess I'm out then. Thanks a lot.

Thanks a lot for nothing.

Next time consider not leaving out a whole continent of us.

I have to admit I'm not so sure who could win at this point. It seems like it's a pretty level field this time around. I don't think any team really sticks out as clearly superior. Yet anyway...
1876  Other / Off-topic / Re: Have you quit your job yet? on: June 21, 2014, 09:15:15 PM
What is a full time bitcoiner?

What does that entail and how does one make a living being a full time bitcoiner?

I guess I could see someone who put in a few hundred dollars back in 2010 might be able to live off their bitcoin. But other than that I'm not so sure what you could do other than have a regular job that pays you in bitcoins. Is that what you mean?
1877  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How I made 0.3 for free in just a couple weeks. on: June 21, 2014, 09:13:23 PM
I branched out a found a few earn sites. The best of which I found was www.landofbitcoin.com
This site pays you in satoshis for entering captchas every 5 minutes, but how you actually earn is by waiting for videos to pop up. I enable sound notification so I don't have to stay on the page. Video pops up, I play it and leave the volume on low so I don't have to hear it. They pay 5000 satoshis per view, so it doesn't take much effort and you can earn probably 0.005 BTC a day with that system. On that website you will find other options such as bitvisitor.com which pays you for viewing web pages for 5 minutes at a time.

Umm... Are we thinking of the same site here? Last time I checked, Landofbitcoin.com was a faucet rotator for Microwallet.org. That one was actually one of the first faucet rotators I used before I started getting seriously into Bitcoin (and like you, realizing that faucets are mostly a waste of time and it is much better to just buy it with fiat instead Cheesy).

Check the date on OP.

It's from a year ago.
1878  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Radeon HD 4670 AGP mining? on: June 21, 2014, 08:59:56 PM
Is it really possible to mine altcoins on an old Radeon 4xxx series? Are these new algorithms really made to work on slower cards?

I have a HD 4850 and I can't imagine mining anything on it, or am I wrong?

Are X11 and X13 specialised for cpus and older gpus or something?

1880  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which coins have innovative features? on: June 21, 2014, 08:49:47 PM
IMO, the only remarkably innovative coin (besides BTC obviously) is Namecoin. They actually added functionality, and that's something you don't see here much.

How are all the other coins that have implemented PoS, asset exchanges, anonymous transactions ect. not innovative? I think there have been lots of very innovative features. Namecoin is also innovative of course, but so are all these others in my opinion.
