1081  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Bitmark on: August 17, 2014, 04:10:36 PM
is there any live difficulty indicator?

There is on the new website, I created that bit last night.

Published the newly skinned block explorer together with API details. It will be staying on port 3000 for the short term future, a few weeks at least, until everything is migrated from apache to nginx.

Difficulty on network is high, hash rate has halved, the market has dropped a little but not so much. I think just enough such that the blocks mined yesterday at a huge hashrate will have their reward profitability decreased by the time the rewards are matured and able to be sent to market. Mining profitability on the short term really doesn't work with such a long maturity, I'd recommend ignoring such figure in future for the best performance of both network and miner investment.

edit: batesresearch, thank you. The website is far smarter, I hope you'll agree Smiley

If anybody else would like to take up the funding offer a combined total of 5.5 BTC interest bearing and guaranteed developer loans are still required to help me work on this full time for the foreseeable future.

Yes, the block maturity time seems to be working out well and helping with stability so far. Good idea on your part. Smiley
1082  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Bitmark on: August 17, 2014, 01:44:44 PM
is there any live difficulty indicator? when retarget happens(remaining blocks) i know it retargets every 720 but i wanted something that shows the remaining blocks until next retarget.

We have a bot in IRC that has all those statistics. http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=bitmark

Also I'm sure the website will have something of the sort since the API's are already done. If not on the launch then probably shortly after since it's something that wouldn't take very long(I think anyway).
1083  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Blowing the lid off the CryptoNote/Bytecoin scam (with the exception of Monero) on: August 17, 2014, 10:02:44 AM
Alain here from the Stanford Bitcoin Group. I am not related to the CryptoNote project at all, nor is the Stanford Bitcoin Group. I started an open source project called Cryptonote (https://github.com/alainmeier/cryptonote) in May 2013 and then was approached in March 2014 by someone from the CryptoNote cryptocurrency project who wanted to buy the domain, so I sold it to them. It's just an unfortunate coincidence.

The CryptoNote team has claimed that the name 'CryptoNote' was something they had been using for previous projects. Almost like they wanted to imply that they were associated with the Stanford group.

Do you happen to have any details on the person who bought the domain from you?

Were you curious about their project at all at the time? Did they let you look at any source, or ask for your opinion?
1084  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Darkcoin falls by 50% over a few weeks discuss - (not moderated) on: August 17, 2014, 09:54:20 AM
The price falls by 25% alone today. Anyone want to shred a light on what's going on?

Whales are cashing out to buy cheap BTC, weak hands are panic selling, that's what caused DRK price dropped 25% today

It's denominated in BTC, how does that work? Cashing out to what to buy BTC?
1085  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 17, 2014, 08:48:58 AM
Any Ducknote XDN fans in here?

with the recent wallet news and subsequent price spike I have started to dabble

I think it shows potential to be a "fun" tipping type currency in the CN space (similar to DOGE for a different userbase)

thoughts?

A fun tipping currency and CryptoNote seem like an odd and silly combination to me.

Well, what are some objective reasons to actually hold DRK?

I honestly can't think of one. And I have nothing against DRK in particular.
1087  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Blowing the lid off the CryptoNote/Bytecoin scam (with the exception of Monero) on: August 16, 2014, 09:35:21 PM

I wouldn't exactly call XMR being ignored. lol...

Yes it is, none of the major coin news website or bitcoin people are publicly talking about it (exception of gmaxwell and a few others), when its clearly the only coin that can surpass bitcoin on the long-term, yet they flirt with an obvious vaporware like Etherium, it makes me mad and sad.

Bitcoin people purposely ignore any alt though no matter what(I guess with the exception of the one you mentioned). They'll cover their ears until the end of time.

Etherum is an alt that's not calling itself an alt. So some Bitcoiners don't see through it. And then there is the fact that they have V. Buterin who is a prominent Bitcoiner, so that helps them ignore the altcoin association.
1088  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 16, 2014, 09:26:24 PM
Current growth of users has slowed down and is no more than 2-3% per week. ... Monthly estimates for altcoin that is baby are useless.

Statistically, monthly estimates smooth over the variation from week to week, and thus are, while more lagging, a less noisy (but more biased) estimator of central tendency.   Adjust for bias, and you end up with a number which is all-around superior.  The first month after public listing is likely to be an outlier (see the price chart for evidence of anomaly), and hence should be dropped.  An argument can be made that price patterns are evidence of a continuing declining anomaly, and hence a weighted average should be superior.

Are there any current initiatives going on now by Monero to increase adoption?
1089  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Blowing the lid off the CryptoNote/Bytecoin scam (with the exception of Monero) on: August 16, 2014, 08:36:14 PM
Call me crazy but all this dirt surrounding XMR may actually be good on the long run, I have long lost faith in humanity and seeing clear-as-day scams like Darkcoin being pumped and shilled while XMR still largely ignored hurts any feeling I have left, so thank you OP for the clarification with proof that XMR is in no way associated with these shady individuals and that Cryptonote tech is sound, that being said, XMR being child of a scam project will actually help bring more people on it, because even at a subconsciously level people like having leverage to blackmail you somehow even though associating with you would do nothing but harm at long-term (darkcoin), with XMR some will like to think they have knowledge of some dirt on it but this couldn't be farther from the truth and any insinuation of bad intention on part of Monero's team would be instantly destroyed by equal opposite evidence.
Insane logic but human beings are insane.

I wouldn't exactly call XMR being ignored. lol...

Darkcoin is sketchy but that's just bag holders holding it up at this point.
1090  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: bter hacked and lost 50m nxt on: August 16, 2014, 07:38:56 PM
I am impressed that the forgers made the right choice.

I feel bad for Bter, especially considering that they helped someone from the Nxt community by freezing someones acct.

I am even more impressed that in the near future it will take 90% to make a fake ledger. I don't ever see 9 out of 10 people choosing a fake ledger unless the life of the coin was actually on the line.

So everything turned out ok for Nxt. It passed a very big test and showed the world that it is the real deal.

gotta agree this is what i wanna say too !
i hope bter is not destroyed because of this Sad

@Jedelqu
it was BTER's fault though but NXT's rep is damaged i think in this no matter what.
but it's not fair to blame the coin when it was BTER's password problem that caused this (or so they say)

Why do you think NXT's rep is damaged in this?
1091  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 16, 2014, 06:29:48 PM
This is good for them, but I am still out for now, the fact that this was on the table scares me.
Even in Bitcoin there's plenty of people constantly proposing retarded things that would remove fungibility hence destroy the currency itself.
But they are just ignored.

Yeah, if anything the complete and utter dismissal of that option should strengthen your opinion. I have no strong opinion of NXT as an investment but if you were 'in' before, this is an odd reason to get out.
1092  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Blowing the lid off the CryptoNote/Bytecoin scam (with the exception of Monero) on: August 16, 2014, 06:27:07 PM
Things are getting interesting, i like that  Smiley

Rethink-your-strategy, you showed in OP that you can verify certain claims, but honestly you should provide facts without giving conclusions atm – do not assume that readers are idiots. You gave strong evidence about dates of two documents, paper v1 and v2, but this does not tell much about motives for such action. Your conclusions are very naive and now i'll explain why.

You conclude that whole original CN group had one goal and that is was to scam ppl out of their money, but actually world is much more complex than you suggest. I'll offer alternative scenario by assuming that not every person is the same and that within that group members had different motives for participation. Some may be interested in a technology, some in human rights, other just didn't wont in the future for their girlfriends/wifes to know where they spend all of their money, some wished to produce monetary platform they can invest in long-term in and finally some just wonted to get fruits of their labor quickly and non-transparently. It is not your only mistake that you do not see spectrum of possible motives, with in a group of ppl, but you neglect the fact that there are more repressive states in the World than one you have in the US. This whole 2y in deep web mining by small groups around the globe claim could have been an attempt to anonymise development path of CN, and i can hardly see what is wrong with that. After all, they are not the first who gave monetary platform and wanted to stay anonymous, remember “Satoshi group”? I couldn't care less if they come from China, India, Russia or Iran, as proven later they gave cryptographically solid platform to the rest of the World - a private one that is arguably more valuable than transparent one (in altruistic sense).

Without a doubt, some members of that group did have get rich quickly motives, but to conclude that no other motive exists if just ridiculous. If i was to jump to conclusions as you do i may conclude that your whole effort is to prove that every coin except Monero have devs that know the technology, which puts Monero ~1y behind rest of the CN coins, but that would also be ridiculous. Please give us facts, and skip the conclusions, things are obviously to complex to be able to conclude anything just yet.

Other thing that is dubious in your conclusions imo is that about that guy Andrei. Do you find him guilty that emails work as they do so spaming is cheap, or if he is guilty that certain OS is insecure enough so it can be easily exploited, or because of him pharmaceutical industry is what it is today? Dude, if he made botnet that does not steel money from ppl using banking services “secure” as they are at the moment that does tell a lot about him per se. What evidence you have to claim that he would not do something else (less dubious) if he was payed enough for his talents? You seem to be forgetting that not everyone has the same chance as ppl in US.

This brings me to my last point. Claims made not just by you, that ppl which are not native English seekers are not credible is racist crap and should be avoided at all cost! It is not important how much Hero or whatever status member has – speaking like that just reduces his credibility significantly and mark him as FUDster troll, subtle in some cases but troll nevertheless. On the contrary, i see some of the CN projects as galvanizers that (first time in History?) bring ppl from all over the globe to contribute together for a benefit to all,  without formal obligations and contracts. This is just beautiful, and would not be possible without the Internet. If BTC gave ppl chance to connect despite cultural differences, CNs may be leading in exploiting this opportunity.

So again, please, give us facts but do not be aggressive with drawing the conclusions. If you would travel more around the globe your conclusions may be stronger, but i assure you that this does not sound very convincing to all.

Disclaimer: I never mined or owned BCN, and I have no clue who these ppl are. I'm against premine/ninjamine generally but i do like most other consequences of CN group work.

I don't know what your intention is here but this whole defending Andrei is kind of out of left field. Are you doing in case it turns out that crypto_zoidberg is he?

Even if CZ is this famous hacker guy it doesn't exactly kill BBR. I don't think that many people will care. Clearly CZ is a very intelligent person who is determined to make a good currency. Even if XMR devs disagree with him on some key points.

I still doubt that he is but your post almost looks like you know that he is and you're preemptively defending him.
1093  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: bter hacked and lost 50m nxt on: August 16, 2014, 04:47:35 PM
NXT is a social experiment as its founders like to say, devs give forgers a choice, so that forgers can exercise their right to vote with their forging power. That's the reason for this patched release. This goes to show the spirit of forgers and what they stand for. If they weren't offered a choice, it would be unknown what forgers stand for, and whether they truely support ideas of crypto currency. NXT forgers proved they do. You can keep trying to twist it as if it's not in NXT favor, but for all unbiased people it's clear to see what it's all about. But trolls gonna troll, it's their life.

So why don't they introduce this as a permanent feature? Give forgers the option to whitelist or blacklist every single transaction at will.
Maybe with a nice thumbs up button.   Lips sealed
Do you know why? Because this would be the shittiest of all alt-coins...

Actually forgers can do that on their own, NXT is open source, just like in Bitcoin miners can do that.
They can modify the software to include or not include txs.
If 51% (or 90% soon when Transparent Forging is enabled) of forging/mining power agrees to use the same modified software, then an alternative longer chain can be formed. That's the beauty of crypto currencies Smiley and that's basics of crypto currencies too Smiley

Well you just go ahead and live in fantasy land.

Luckily most prefer reality.

You are describing the worst altcoin ever.

What the ledger should show is WHAT REALLY HAPPENED IN REAL LIFE

THAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE LEDGER

Not for us to pick and choose what public ledger suits us. lol smh gtfo!!  Roll Eyes

Actually I'd think you would be impressed with this. Their new technology requiring 90% of forgers to agree is much closer to what you want it to be than the standard >50%.
1094  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Blowing the lid off the CryptoNote/Bytecoin scam (with the exception of Monero) on: August 16, 2014, 03:01:22 PM
Do you guys really think that crypto_zoidberg is part of CN or Bytecoin?

The post is quite good but I think that part seems the weakest. But I'd like to hear other opinions.
1095  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: bter hacked and lost 50m nxt on: August 16, 2014, 02:37:54 PM
Anyone concerned that bter does not have 1.5 million available to make up for this...

Arent they now a de facto fractional crypto operation?

I'm concerned, yes. I've been advising people to get their funds out of BTER.

I hope they can recover from this. But personally I would not be taking a chance with my money by letting it sit around.
1096  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: bter hacked and lost 50m nxt on: August 16, 2014, 12:35:01 PM
Hacker's btc moving

very stupid of them to give hackers the BTC. Giving a thief more money and hoping he will return when he has no obligation to do so.

They got 5M back, that's worth >300 btc. Bter won in that trade.

They traded only 10 BTC for the 5m NXT though. The hacker said the deal was off but they foolishly sent another 90 BTC to his address.

Hi,

This is my first time claiming payment. Are we supposed to fill out that form before the 17th, or on the 17th?

Also, I don't remember exactly how many posts I started with. Is there a spreadsheet or some other data source I can look at to find this out?

Thanks.
1098  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is focus on adoption the most important thing? on: August 16, 2014, 09:46:58 AM
I agree that crypto currencies should focus on people using them in their day to day lives, but in order to do this I feel it needs:

1. Be easy to use
2. Secure
3. Transactions need to be instant (6 sec's or less) and this has to be natively built-in, no third party stuff.
3. Mobile, needs to be mobile, use it on phones and tablets.
4. Bloat free, a user shouldn't have to wait hrs to sync with chain.
5. Price stability, no big swings let we have seen with BTC.
That's what it will take for your co-worker, neighbour, spouse to use it.

Project Bitmark's 'Marking' initnisitive mentioned in the article should cover 1-4. Although 2 is not guaranteed but since it's meant for mircotransactions and microtrust it should be less of an issue and a lot of thought is currently being put in regarding how to maximize security on all fronts.

Number 5 is a tricky one since it's not really possible to control the market. I think time, volume, and market cap are the only things that can really calm the volatility inherent in these type of assets.

I want to know about other projects that are attempting to tackle these issues.

Is there anything in Bitcoin being developed? Circle perhaps? Anything else?
1099  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: bter hacked and lost 50m nxt on: August 16, 2014, 09:24:07 AM
If I have learned anything in the world of crypto. It's just when you think nothing can get worse just when you think everythings at an all time low Mark Karpeles will walk his fat fucking ass into the room and spill a boiling hot frappucino all over your computer. Mark my words thinks are about to get worse.
This is legendary.

I agree. That's why the community turned down that unacceptable patch.
Still i have some news that might shock you. Even in open source programs you need developers. Developers to make them and maintain them.
And the fate of crypto-currencies is pretty much tied with the reputation and the actions of its developers.
That's basically it, a lot of coins have failed because the devs were not trustworthy or just inexperienced.

Yeah, there's not much way around the fact that things are going to be dependent on the developers. I guess the fact that we have 1000 currencies that we can switch to in the drop of a hat mitigates that risk somewhat.

It's like if Bitcoin devs ever went rogue there are clear alternatives to Bitcoin that could easily replace it. Not that I actually think Bitcoin devs would ever do something like that.
1100  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: bter hacked and lost 50m nxt on: August 16, 2014, 08:17:24 AM
It never occurred to me until this whole fiasco how "forging" can also have connotations of illicit activity, and not only refer to forging steel or something (which I think is the intended meaning). If all the forgers agree on a new fiction, then it shall be a reality, or something Tongue

How is it any different than "mining"?

How is it illicit activity?
