Bter has so far sent 30 BTC then. They should get back at least 15m NXT for that, but fully expect the hacker to run away. Why give the thief more money when he said negotiations are over.

Who sent the other 80 BTC then?

Bter sent the full 100BTC. Not sure about the other 10 or if there was another 10. There was a couple BTC in that account before all this started I think.

That's what I thought as well.

I'm surprised they sent it even after he said the deal was off.

They're clearly panicking.

So, here is what's going to happen.

In NXT, forgers decide what chain to forge on.

NXT is all for decentralization.

CfB is against a rollback, he said, but he sees not giving a choice to the community as a centralized decision on his part.

That's why he's going to put a modified release for download, which rolls back the chain.

If enough forgers download that release and forge with it and their chain is longer, then that chain wins and the hack is rolled back.

If enough forgers stay on the old chain and keep it the longest, then the hack is not rolled back.

That's how decentralization works in the PoS world.

The equivalent in PoW would be 51% of the miners mining on the longest chain, it's same in PoS.

Let's see how this drama unfolds Smiley

Right.

This is exactly what decentralisation is.

Like I was saying earlier in the thread.

I don't know if withdrawals are completely frozen or not but anyone who has money in Bter should strongly consider getting it all out if you can. They lost 50 million NXT and things are not looking good.
1145  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 15, 2014, 12:15:09 PM
If you have money in Bter I would advise you get it out while you can. Things are going off the rails. The Bter guy just sent what looks like 100 BTC to the hacker after the hacker said the deal was off.

Considering they lost ~2 million worth of NXT and they'll be obligated to pay people back I'm guessing they might be in some trouble.

Child me would be happy to know that the future would read like some cyberpunk novel. Tongue

110 BTC sent but the deal is off?!

What are they doing?!
1148  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: bter hacked and lost 50m nxt on: August 15, 2014, 11:49:44 AM
The courteous thief/hacker made an account and posted on the Nxt forum.

Quote
Okay, Guys - Let me apologise - but the deal is off.

I'm not going to stay here for hours waiting for him to send the bitcoins. I been almost hour since the first batch of NXT was sent to him, I'm not going to stay hours waiting for his send batch of his bitcoins.

I got  things to do, than sit around and wait.

Lets see if the one exchanges lack of impenitence will ruin whole NXT community.

Good luck, all!

Moments later, BTER sent him 20BTC.

Why did Bter send 20 BTC after this?

I don't think the details about the hacker are correct. Very likely those are stolen too.

The details are the Bter guy's details...

From the hacker: "Lin used same password for 90% of his services including his linode account."

Now we will see if NXT is decentralized or not Smiley

rollback = centralized

Not really. It takes all the decentralised nodes to agree and form a consensus.

That's like calling Bitcoin centralised every time they upgrade the software.

haha what?

When bitcoin upgrades the software there is no rollback

Do you not see the difference?

How is x amount of individuals separate from each other centralised?

When Bitcoin upgrades the software or has a hard fork the miners and the nodes need to agree on using and mining on a new chain(in the case of a hard fork).

It's a decentalised consensus either way.

That's the whole point of decentalisation. That it takes the majority to make changes.

I'm not saying that I necessarily support the forgers choosing to roll back or not though. But it clearly isn't a centralised decision.

Digital hostage negotiation going on between Bter and the 50 million NXT hacker via public block messages.

737607765281301757 is the first one i think.

So in case people just follow this thread and ignore the alt forum in general like I normally do, I thought I'd post this since it's somewhat relevant to the general discussion here:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=740112.0

Bytecoin being a scam is not new. But the rest of it starts getting crazy and I'm wondering what's up.

edit: The crypto_zoidberg stuff seems a bit out there, but I don't know. It's pretty clear though that Monero should continue distancing themselves from CN.
1154  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NXT] Nxt - Official Thread on: August 15, 2014, 09:58:51 AM
Bter's systems must have been comprised right? How could they only hacked their NXT wallet? They must of keylogged/read the clipboard and gotten their twelve word seed right?
1155  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: SteamBitShop ● Buy Steam games with bitcoin ● Instant delivery (0 confirmations) on: August 14, 2014, 07:55:23 PM
This is a great service and everyone who buys games on steam and also likes to use BTC should take advantage of the low prices. Smiley

This is my go to source for any games now.
1156  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Bitmark on: August 14, 2014, 07:27:05 PM

I specify 60 days rather than 45, to allow time at the end to earn money by traditional freelancing should the value not double, as a contingency to make up any shortfall.

Just want to point out that if for whatever reason the BTM price alone does not cover the loan(I think it will, but regardless) Mark will easily be able to repay it through his regular job as a professional freelance programmer.

The risks are minimal considering the project rests on funding and the 10% interest is very generous in my opinion.

I would do it myself but I've also taken loans for Bitmark related expenses in the short term and will probably do so again since I believe the project is easily worth it and a good investment.

1157  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 0.2 FEE!!!! ? am i missing something? on: August 14, 2014, 04:59:48 PM
There should be a ignore filter, where everyone who doesn't have Full Member status or is whitelisted can be ignored.

The newbie jail worked fine I thought.

Does the newbie jail still exist?

I thought I saw a few newbies with 1 or 2 posts outside of the beginners forum.
1158  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Quantum Computer. on: August 14, 2014, 04:58:13 PM
If quantum computers really going to exist, we will need to update our crypto protocols to stronger ones(SHA-1024)?

But the same crypto technology still can be used, so we will only need some adaptation after the panic wave

If they really can break one-way mathematical functions, just updating to a more complex one doesn't work... It's a question of what exactly will be possible with quantum computers.

sigh...already been discussed to death in other threads.

there is no known or even theorized quantum algo or speedup for breaking one way functions.
only ECDSA.

Yeah: no _known_! Like I said, we'll probably be safe off, but can't be sure since something just _might_ come around the corner and prove our current systems to be flawed. It wouldn't be the first time that happened with some technology!

It is definitely something to keep in mind. A lot of people seem to dismiss it outright but really it's kind of a big deal.

Is coinapult official involved with this?

Is that service run by reputable members of the community?
1160  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Bitmark on: August 14, 2014, 04:40:25 PM
I remind everyone that Project Bitmark has no Pre-mine and no-IPO. With the implementation of 'Marking', Bitmark offers a tangible vision for the future which far exceeds the ambitions of other currencies.

Mark (coinsolidation) has made every sacrifice imaginable to bring us "The Bitmark Community" to the point we are now. Mark recently sold his car to cover the next 2 months rent, so that this project does not leave his family without a roof over their heads.

Mark is committed to Project Bitmark and I hope many of you make a commitment to aid in the Funding efforts that are required for this project.

Please do what you can (18rai2ichzUfXG6PVmUQLNPqBjtctnVRAD)

Yes. Any support for Mark's development benefits us 100 fold in the long run. Right now we're on the cusp of some big innovations in adoption by regular people but since Bitmark is 100% community funded it puts a lot of pressure on Mark working 16-18 hours a day on a non paying job. Especially when he has a family to take care of.

So especially if you're new to the project and weren't aware of our funding model it's no premine, no IPO ect. Our goal is to support full time development through donations. Anyone buying or mining BTM for future value can understand how much we all gain by having an top notch developer working around the clock of us.
