201  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: there is blood on the streets NOW on: July 18, 2017, 06:11:33 AM
It isn't really stupidiy, it is people who have probably invested more than they should have, who can't afford to lose everything, so they take measures to get their fiat back after a big dump on the markets.
They don't know, and we also can't be 100% sure, that the market will recover. It could have happened that bitcoin fell into a death spiral and those who sold first were the 'clever' ones.

But now in hindsight, we know that the price is back up $400 and that the sellers lost 20% for no reason.

I guess being around Bitcoin and other crypto for a few years makes you less sensitive to these crazy market moves, but I still am affected by the big swings, even if I don't sell because of them. Realising that your net worth has falled significantly in a few hours for no real reason can be tough! I understand why people then think that they should diversify, but they would usually be better off waiting a few days, then selling and diversifying.
202  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 17, 2017, 09:30:34 AM
How sad it is - just another dump by the whales to make weak hands panic so they can buy some cheap coins. As in the real world economy - the rich are getting richer the poor are getting poorer. I guess we're back on the right track though and BTC is recovering...

It's the minnows' fault if they walk straight into whale hands. Anyone with a little gumption should be able to figure out what the score is. I don't have any sympathy for anyone who follows their programming.

In other news there's this - https://medium.com/@ViaBTC/statement-on-bitcoin-user-activated-hard-fork-6e7aebb67e67

If Bitmain does hard fork it's going to be a new coin with another name. I'd say that was rather positive for everyone.

Bitcoin cash even sounds like a crappy alt coin.
It can join BitcoinDark and BitcoinPlus as pointless BitcoinX coins.

Funny that I will be a holder of this Bitcoin Cash if they fork, along with the airdrops of Alts going on, I keep getting given stuff I don't really want, that I then change for 'real money' i.e. Bitcoin!
203  Economy / Speculation / Re: Buckle Up: Bitcoin Price Heads For Below $2,000 As August 1 Nears on: July 17, 2017, 07:48:27 AM
Europe is coming online after the weekend and the price is rising already.
I expect that in the next 5-8h the price will rise quite a bit more, up to $2150 or so.

It oftens seems like the bears take advantage

https://blockchain.info/block-height/476096

a bip 91 block just got created.

How can you tell that is a bip 91 block?
I thought BIP91 blocks would only be formed when 80% of the miners indicate that they will accept BIP91.
Why are individual BIP91 blocks being created, is it not an all or nothing, we go BIP91 or not situation?

This whole UASF, UAHF, BIPXX stuff is pretty confusing for me as a non-technical person.  Even when I look at the current state of affairs with how many nodes indicate what, I have no idea what is winning and what is the most likely end result!
205  Economy / Speculation / Re: When will bitcoin hit the lowest? 1)before 21july 2) 21july-1au 3)after 1 august on: July 16, 2017, 05:24:34 PM
...I seriously wonder how many people will end up withdrawing their coins from any sort of service before the 1st of August. After all the 'hack' incidents, people are still too lazy to take care of storing their coins themselves. Lips sealed

Probably over half the people with coins on exchanges won't move them before the 1st of August. In fact they probably haven't even noticed all the commotion about a fork and won't buy or sell either. I think we will run out of panic sellers before 21 july and Bitcoin's price will begin to rise before then. There's a limited number of coin holders that take an interest in the latest developments, and plenty of other coin holders who don't read  the news.

I expect a lot of volatility, but don't think the price will fall much more than it already has.  I think that post 21.July the price will start to rise as the future situation of Bitcoin starts to become clearer.

I personally wouldn't be holding any coins on exchanges, if we fork, I want to know that I have my coins under control, not that someone gives me me my coins from 1 fork back.  They can also block withdrawals, which I would not be happy with.

If you don't hold it, you don't own it is what the PM guys say, well something similar is true for Bitcoin too.
206  Economy / Speculation / Re: Every online coin is dropping like Crazy today on the charts what happened? on: July 16, 2017, 05:19:36 PM
http://coinmarketcap.com/
Poor guy too anyone who had 100 BTC. Just lost $100k in the last 30 days.

Very literally wrong. If someone has 100BTC they are not a poor guy, they have $194.7k just in Bitcoin.
Go back to the Bitcoin chart and look at the 6 month chart, or the 1 year chart.

You don't have to feel sorry for people who have bought and held, maybe those who bought at the very top, but time is on their side, they can hold and sell in the future, unless it never goea back to $3,000, which I find unlikely.
207  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 15, 2017, 02:59:05 PM
Well this sucks, seems like people wait until the weekends to really dump on the market at the moment.
I'm not in a big hurry, so as long as this isn't the beginning of the end, it doesn't matter too much.

I do feel a lot happier when Bitcoin is rising to all time highs though, I feel rich!
208  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Waves Vs. Ethereum on: July 14, 2017, 07:05:22 AM
Does any one thinks that Ethereum can survive with the rising of Waves? I've heard that "Waves will be the next Ethereum"
No one here will give you a serious answer, everyone just talks their book.
ETH is much bigger and more establihsed than Waves. I can't really comment on the technical differences of the two, because I am not a technical person.

Waves has more space to rise in price, but might not rise. ETH has more room to fall, but is also down 33% in the last few weeks, so could regain that. Basically you have to do you own research and decide which is better. Even if you decide correctly, the market is often irrational, so you might lose money on a good investment.
209  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Photos: Life inside of China’s massive and remote bitcoin mines on: July 14, 2017, 06:55:46 AM
All that water around all that electricity doesn't seem like a good mix

This!
It looks like a good place to have a Bitcoin mining plant, but it doesn't look very high tech. And what is with the standing water inside next to the miners? I get using water coolers, but water on the ground deosn't look very professional and can't be safe.

It looks like the owner is in it for a quick buck to me. They picked out a great location, but are half arsing it with the other stuff. How about they dispose of their rubbish/trash?
210  Economy / Speculation / Re: 1st Aug event: Possible Bitcoin pump? on: July 13, 2017, 01:52:42 PM
Buy the rumour, sell the fact is the old trading proverb.

In this case it would be sell Bitcoin before the possible fork, then on August 1st it would be time to buy, when the fact is know.
I can imagine that that would be the right way to go too, sell now, let the market fall due to uncertainty, then buy back low and wait for it to rise after the uncertainty is over.
211  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why everyone are nervous for the segwit2x fork? on: July 13, 2017, 10:01:49 AM
The market doesn't like volatility, that is why I am nervous.

I am a fan of bitcoin, I like the principles behind it, but I also care about my money and don't want to have an improved bitcoin that costs $500, now that I am used to it being over $2000.
The split didn't do ETH any long term damage, but it could hurt Bitcoin. I think an amicable agreement from both sides resulting in one stronger chain in the future is the obvious dream scenario.

Maybe 2 strong Bitcoins are better than 1, but it is worrying, this is real money we are talking about!
212  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BYTEBALL: Totally new consensus algorithm + private untraceable payments on: July 13, 2017, 06:31:57 AM
Feel like every month, there is a pump and dump for Byteball....

It's only to be expected, it's almost like collecting monthly interest payments on your BTC.  I'm sure there are plenty of airdrop recipients with no plans to hold Byteball long term.  The airdrop arrives and they turn around and sell...

If it weren't for them, Byteball buyers would have a tough time buying cheap GBs. In any case, this will stop in a few months time as the airdrop ends. Looking at the pace of Bitcoin linking, I wouldn't be surprised if the airdrop lasts only for a couple of more months.
I agree with this. At the moment people aren't really incentivized to sell, they will get a 20% bonus on what they hold anyway. so if someone has 1GBYTE, and there are 4 more airdrops, they will have 2.07 GBYTE after the last airdrop, even without holidng any BTC.  That means that the price will have to more than half for it to be worth their while selling now, instead of later.

After each Airdrop, the maths changes. Next time it will be a more attractive time to sell, after 2 more airdrops, it will be even better.

I predict carnage after the last drop, but as you say, that is when the true price discovery phase starts.
213  Economy / Speculation / Re: Buying BTC with storage space (Sia/Storj/Burst...): Price analysis on: July 13, 2017, 06:14:07 AM
It's an interesting topic, which is rare on Bitcointalk these days!
1 question would be, do you not need to have a SSD to rent your storage space? That costs more than $30 per TB if so.

It also seems like you are talking about a 1 month job, which it wouldn't need to be. You would still have everything in month 2 and onwards to continue making money.

I guess the costs of running the HDs, along with the bandwidth and associated extra costs would end up making the procurement costs of the HD look minimal in the long term.
On a different note, I would worry about storing other people's data on my server. What if they have illegal stuff on there?
214  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BYTEBALL: Totally new consensus algorithm + private untraceable payments on: July 12, 2017, 08:11:15 PM
lol. just look at this bullshit wall. someone obviously wants to accumulate cheap coins.

If they want to accumulate, why are they selling and not buying Huh

When things looked good a whale put a 109 BTC wall of china to make me be at loss again, great

The big sell wall is trying to scare the weak hands to sell so that they can accumulate.
Once they have accumulated enough they will remove the wall.
You might well be right and that is something I have seen happen quite a few times.
It does also sometimes happen that a whale wants to sell, so they put up a wall.

$250k worth is pretty crazy!  I remember similar stuff happening with Clams, but eventually the seller sold off the exchange and the price went back up afterwards.
215  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: BITCOIN FORK INFORMATION on: July 12, 2017, 10:17:42 AM
If only there was a part of the forum where you could post topics specifically about Bitcoin and Bitcoin related news.
Oh yeah, that is almost the entire forum, other than the Alts section, which is where you have posted this!

Thanks for the Bitcoin news, but next time I will look in the Bitcoin discussion area for Bitcoin discussion, then in the Altcoin discussion for discussion of altcoins!
216  Economy / Speculation / Re: Cryptocurrency getting Crashed on: July 12, 2017, 06:45:15 AM
Why Cryptocurrency getting crashed in last somedays?
You mean alts, Bitcoin is down a little, but it isn't tragic, especially when you look over anything but the short term.

Alts are in a massive bubble, that might explain why they will eventually fall massively.  They might drag Bitcoin down a little with them, but I don't see it being a huge problem, in fact the BTC dominance being over 75% again would be a good thing for the Crypto world in my opinion.
217  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Being a whale.. on: July 11, 2017, 07:59:49 PM
I think a whale is actually more like a unicorn.

They don't really exist, or at least they don't exist in the way that people talk about them here. Why are these 'whales' risking millions of USD worth of Crypto to move the markets, so that they can maybe, hopefully make a few percent.  I think mass hysteria is the real reason that the market swings quickly, then recovers, not whales.

The whole pump and dump stuff might be started by individuals or groups, but they just start the ball rolling and let the idiots move the market further.
218  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: I’m thinking about Bitcoin Mining on: July 06, 2017, 08:35:48 AM
Is there a thread about how to complete mining?
If anyone can give a link to that thread?

I can do you one better!

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=14.0

That is the entire sub-forum about mining. Just a quick tip though, if you need to ask, then Bitcoin mining isn't for you.
If you get unlimited free electricity and have several million dollars to invest in a mining farm and the newest, most efficient miners, then go for it!
219  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: EOS is an Ethereum token without any purpose on: July 05, 2017, 11:47:27 AM
I'm surprised that they have raised so little.
Such a stupid idea sounds perfect for speculators in the current environment.

I see they have only raised $150k, hardly worth their while  Roll Eyes
220  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What do SegWit or 2 MB blocks actually solve? on: July 05, 2017, 09:51:38 AM
Right. No kidding.

I have been saying this for years.

So it does not solve anything (in terms of transactions per second).
Essentially the moment it is implemented we can start with another SegWit 3x vs. 4 MB debate.

If it is truly so what is the background story behind such a heated debate over cours of scaling?
But in the future when 16TB SSD hard drives are the norm, it won't really matter that the block size is 2MB or 8MB or 16MB.
Right now the blockchain is already fairly large, like 120GB (and rising 1GB per week now).  Given that most people won't even have a 1TB SSD (because a decent one is expensive), it means that it is taking up a huge chunk of their hard drive.

If you are happy for people not to run full nodes, and to run lite wallets, then it isn't a problem for you, but if you want to see Bitcoin less centralized, then the size of the blockchain matters.

I think a gradual rise in the blocksize as technology improves is a fair way to go. Segwit helps for the time being, but ultimately we will need larger blocks, meaning a massive blockchain.
