401  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How do I get started with investing in altcoins? on: March 03, 2017, 08:39:46 PM

Research Read Research Read Research Read.

Guess, hope, expect it to be a scam, don't hold long term. They seem like decent rules too!

The best altcoins aren't neccesarily the most valuable ones, they are just the ones that have been picked up by a community and were added to good exchanges.

I would add, don't expect that a coin will eventually be valuable just because it is a good coin, i.e. not premined, fairly mined, good coding etc. You will end up disappointed a lot of the time otherwise!
402  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [CPC] Capricoin - The Peoples Coin on: March 03, 2017, 08:34:49 PM
I was in a regional train today going from Offenburg to Konstanz in Germany and when I sat down I saw a sticker for Capricoin and capripay!
I had to look it up and see what it is all about. It seems like a massive pre-mine, thus not something I would buy into, but I did find it funny that a small alt would be advertised on a regional train.

Did someone here put the stickers up?
403  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin seems to be still the best pick on: March 01, 2017, 08:41:52 PM
stick to btc then for now.

depends how many btc you have.

If you have 1000+ then you can easily risk 50 btc playing with good prospects.

If you have 100 btc then risk 5 BTC

Even with 20 BTC i would say risk at least 1 BTC playing with a few alts that have proven developers and a community around them. A few good outsiders can return nicely on 1BTC.

I like it more risky with 50 % btc now and 50% alts...

Even just months ago I was 80% alts. Too many scams out now though so have got back to btc and a bunch of reliable alts with a good dev.

Some alts look crazy undervalue whilst others look crazy over valued. I guess hours of reading and browsing on here gives you the chance to make the best guesses unless you're a serious developer/coder then you will know which ones offer the most for the money .

Having said all that - exchange manipulation, whale manipulation, hacks, etc all can not be accounted for easily so it's a minefield.

Getting on a x10 or x100 is obviously fun but those are few and far between.

I guess selling BTC before 10th march is not a good plan ... i expect many may have their fingers on the triggers awaiting the outcome of the etf ..
Be nice to know beforehand which way that will go. Or perhaps it won't make as huge a difference and we think.

I like that you are talking to the masses, if you have 1000 Bitcoins - $1.2million worth!
A shorter version would also be - invest 5% of your bitcoin in alts.

I think that when Bitcoin's price is generally rising, then hold bitcoin. When the price levels out or drops, then invest in the alts of choice at the time, now Monero, Dash, ETH or alike.
404  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will this be 1:1? on: March 01, 2017, 08:36:51 PM
I like https://ounce.me/. It does look like parity will be reached this time.

I always planned to swap a few Bitcoins for Gold coins if we ever reached parity, but now that it actually could happen, I feel like I might be missing out on future bif Bitcoin rises if I swap into gold!

I still think Gold is a safer bet though, less volatile in both directions.
405  Economy / Speculation / Re: Get ready to BUYDL on: March 01, 2017, 08:33:52 PM
I don't understand your figures. A 35% chance of the ETF being approved is a 65% chance of it not being approved, hardly a big positive.

If it does get approved, then $300m would be invested, so 1.5% of the total value of BTC.

So there is about 35% chance of a 1.5% inflow, so the price should rise 0.5% on the basis of the ETF. Assuming it won't go down if the ETF is rejected...
406  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why does BTC drop much more sharply then it rises? on: March 01, 2017, 01:43:57 PM
I think that the price slowly appreciates but sharply drops is a good thing generally, better at least that the other way round.
I see it is the weight of buyers slowly pushing the price up over time, and a whale dumping to try to disturb the market, or take profit or buy back cheaper (I have never really understood why a whale would dump on the market)

The other way round would show to me that the masses want out, but the whales are propping up the price.

But maybe that is my rose tinted glasses talking!
407  Economy / Speculation / Re: Despite all the FUD Bitcoin proved to be worth it! on: March 01, 2017, 01:32:35 PM
Bitcoin now worth $1200 with all the FUD and hatred with all the negative opinions about bitcoin, it's performance during past 3 months has proven that bitcoin is a serious currency with a bright future.
BEAT THAT!
Almost $20B market capital, literally from zero to hero Cheesy I don't see those idiots always talked about $200 is the real price any more.
Now mining makes more sense than ever.

I am happy that the price is high, but nothing has really changed in the last few months!
No ETF, no bigger block size, higher fees, no greater acceptance, no new regulations.

The price is high though, so that is good!

I'm pretty certain that mining makes exactly no sense unless you get free electricity. If you want Bitcoin, then buy them, it is quicker and less risky than mining, leave that to the farms.
408  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone else hopes the ETF does NOT pass? on: February 28, 2017, 03:14:17 PM
Me, like everyone here (except damn whales) are dreaming about becoming part of the 1 million club (that is, 21BTC holders). In order to achieve that, I NEED BTC to stay as low as possible, if BTC keeps rising, I can kiss goodbye at ever achieving 21 BTC. It is prohibitive enough today, if the ETF passes and BTC price skyrockets, it will be impossible.

Buying 1 BTC a month is impossible unless you are making a lot of money, for the average joe is not possible anymore, so im stuck with small amounts of BTC monthly. Im hustling all day, I feel exhausted, but I either reach the 21 BTC goal or die in the process.

I am not sure that if it passes that it will be a good thing.
SLV and GLD are not good for physical Silver and Gold, I don't see any great reason why Coin will be great for Bitcoin.

If people want to invest in Bitcoin now, they can. It really isn't that difficult!  My fear is that the ETC will start the age of fractional reserve Bitcoin, which is the beginning of the end in my eyes.
409  Economy / Economics / Re: What is an ETF? on: February 27, 2017, 08:10:21 AM
I will mention again, SLV and GLD are ETFs for gold and silver.
They are almost universally considered to be bad for the price of silver and gold as they trade paper metals, instead of the actual metals.

That means you can print a new 100million ounces and sell them, you just have to say that you have the metal to back up the paper. I bet it is not 100% covered though, there is some fractional reserve going on. That could happen with Bitcoin too, so the initial joy of having an ETF could lead to a long term downward pressure on the price.
410  Economy / Speculation / Re: What will happen when 1 satoshi is $ 1? on: February 27, 2017, 08:05:04 AM
There are extra digits that can be used, so if 1 satoshi was worth $1, something that would only happen if extreme hyperinflation takes hold, then 1/100ths of a satoshi could be used.

Like I say, 1 satoshi will never be worth even close to a 2016 $1, so will never need to be split. If inflation does mean that a satoshi is worth $1, then $1 will buy you nothing, so there will be no need to split it.
411  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [POLL] Are You losing Interest ? on: February 27, 2017, 08:01:26 AM
I am struggling to keep up interest in Altcoins. It seems like a new wave of coins come through every year or so that are the coins to own and are heavily traded.
There is profit to be made trading them, but they will be forgotten soon enough, much like Peercoin, Primecoin, Nxt etc before them.

None of them offer me anything except a trading opportunity. Bitcoin is of very limited value as so few people use it. It is also folding under it'd own weight with higher transaction costs and limited transactions numbers.

412  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: BITGILD.com - Bitcoin to Gold || LIVE CHARTS - BITCOIN TO GOLD || on: February 24, 2017, 02:53:50 PM
Hi, I have a question about the Lunar Goats.
Why are they available below spot gold price?  Is it a mistake (that won't be honored) or is it an offer?

It is quite a lot below spot too!  I haven't heard bad things about bitgild, so am very interested.

The one that is out of stock?

http://www.bitgild.com/lunar-goat-1oz-gold-2015.html
Yeah those ones, I'm pretty sure they weren't out of stock earlier! In fact I am sure of it as I only found them by sorting the gold ounces by price, and now when you do that they show up as out of stock.
Oh well, let's hope that Bitcoin keeps rising and I get to buy some gold sooner or later!  1.09 Bitcoin seems like a lot compared to the 1.02 that the Goats were earlier today (and the BTC price is higher now that it was then!)

414  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 24, 2017, 09:22:47 AM
have any of you managed to log in to Kraken or Poloniex since this Cloudfare problem?
I have this morning, I changed my password on Poloniex. I had a strong password and 2FA anyway though.

Back to speculation, the rise over the last 2 weeks had been uninterrupted, I see now that our first whale dump just happened. I wonder if we will bounce off the price of gold for a third time now!
415  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][EXCHANGE] Poloniex - Crypto Exchange with BTC/NXT on: February 24, 2017, 07:05:35 AM
Can you give more information about possible data leaks, as you mentioned on Twitter?
I have 2FA already and have changed my already strong and unique password.

What data has been leaked, who else has been effected? I'd be thankful for a full reply (no character restrictions here!)
416  Economy / Speculation / Re: When will BTC surpass Gold in price? on: February 22, 2017, 02:23:00 PM
I don't think it's that relevant if Bitcoin surpasses gold in price because that won't make everyone suddenly think Bitcoin is a better stable asset to hold.  What's relevant is whether the market cap of Bitcoin surpasses the value of all gold in circulation, which will take a long time if it ever happens - and it's hard to say when Bitcoin's value objectively passes that of gold because while Bitcoin is a specific unit, gold is different as it could be a coin, a certain weight etc with different numbers of carats as well.

It's also about how volatile Bitcoin and gold prices are and spreading awareness about the benefits of Bitcoin as a non-physical asset.  People often invest in gold for stability when their currency is unstable, and those people need to be convinced that Bitcoin won't just disappear because they're not quite used to the idea of something which doesn't physically exist.  They also need to be informed about the benefits of being able to exchange it with any currency anywhere in the world as long as you have access to the Internet - you don't have to put the work into taking gold anywhere.

Quite the opposite!  I am planning to swap some bitcoins for gold ounces if/when we reach parity!
We have bounced off the price of gold twice now, I think we might break though this time Smiley

Picking the time to buy will be the issue then. I would like a few ounces, but don't want to buy before a rise, or fail to buy before a fall!  1st world problems eh!
417  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can BTC be the major currency ? Maths says NO on: February 22, 2017, 02:16:40 PM
Am american Trillion is 10^12, which is almost certainly what the money supply would be measured in.

Even then 1 satoshi would be 30c, which is too much. I won't lose too much sleep over it though, Bitcoin isn't even supposed to be the only currency in the world. It can also be split 100x further, meaning each 1/100th of a satoshi would be 0.3c, which would be ok.

I think transaction limits and the block chain size 'might' be an issue before then though!

418  Economy / Speculation / Re: Double your retirement moneyz the easy way - ETF-style! on: February 21, 2017, 03:17:32 PM
It seems like this ETF decision will be profitable to matter which way it goes. My plan:

Sell my current IRA/Roth IRA funds a couple of days before ETF news day. No capital gains to report - money ready to go.

If the ETF is approved, buy COIN as soon as it's available (when would that be?). Double my money within weeks.

If the ETF isn't approved, wait and buy GBTC after the big over-correction. Sell once it doubles and await the next ETF news.

Profit?
You have a plan, so go for it!  There are many many things that could happen to throw a spanner in the works, but if you want to invest your entire pension into Bitcoin, then do it!
If you lose out, you only have yourself to blame, better that than missing out if evyrthing happens just as you predicted it!

I personally don't think COIN will double the price of Bitcoin. I also don't think that COIN being rejected will cause the price to half.

Good luck though!
419  Economy / Speculation / Re: 1 Bitcoin Costs 2000$ on: February 21, 2017, 07:01:15 AM

Do we need ask top 1 Youtube Blogger "PewDiePie" to promote Bitcoin?

I really feel that silly little gimmicks like that are way below Bitcoin now, and won't increase the price by 15 billion USD!
The ETF might move the market a little, but I expect that new inflows of money from Africa and non-China Asia would be the main ways for a natural price increase that would get us to $2000.

There is no rush anyway. I personally can't make any difference, you probably can't either. Just sit back and enjoy the ride!
420  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: IS BITCOIN WALLET APP REALLY RELIABLE? on: February 21, 2017, 06:58:13 AM
I have the feeling that my wallet app is the weak link in my Bitcoin security.
Blockchain has a 4 digit code to get into it, my phone has a lock too, but in comparison to 2FA and a very long very strong password, it is weak.

That's why I only keep a small amount on my phone, in case of emergency Smiley

In your case, do you actually trade in the app, or is it just to show the USD value? If it is just for show, it doesn't matter!
