2101  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Senator Ted Cruz Unveils Obamacare Repeal Act on: February 05, 2015, 05:34:18 PM
So you're a supporter of the repeal?
2102  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Traditional cash is more privacy oriented then bitcoin on: February 05, 2015, 05:25:40 PM
More private yes, more transferrable no.

However, Bitcoin is more private than cash for larger volumes. It's very difficult to make a larger private transaction with cash. If you want to buy a house, how much volume does $250,000 in cash take up? A lot! But I can send a $250,000 equivalent of bitcoin easily, with low fees, and without the huge suitcase!

Also, in the US, if you withdraw $10,000 or more from a bank you have to fill out a special form, which allows the Government to track the withdrawal. No such requirement exists with Bitcoin!
2103  Economy / Economics / Re: number of transactions per day higher than ever on: February 05, 2015, 05:18:20 PM
ever since January, where we hit a low, the transactions per day have never been as high as they are now.

the number of unique addresses used is ~30% up from december 2013

miners are struggling making a profit with these prices (so difficulty is lagging behind)

why is the price lagging behind so much?

it has every reason to rise, and yet is doesn't.

There are a lot of factors that needs to be positive first before the price moves upward. Like you, I am also wondering what is the reason why the prices aren't up when there are a lot of positive things happening around bitcoin. Huh

more sellers than buyers...that's really the simple reason. We can all speculate on why people are selling more than buying, such as recessionary times require people to cash in their savings, or perhaps other investments are more attractive, or perhaps there's been huge liquidation that hasn't been made public.

Transaction volume is good for the "survive-ability" of Bitcoin. The more transactions that happen, the more people are using it...and a successful currency needs people to use it!
2104  Economy / Economics / Re: What Comes After Paper Money, Part 1: Fiat's Obvious Failure on: February 05, 2015, 05:13:59 PM
I know people site the fact that every fiat currency in history has failed at one point as a driver for thinking the Dollar will fail, but can the Dollar really fail if the country's economy is still moving and producing?
2105  Other / Off-topic / Re: Riemann hypothesis - Proof on: February 05, 2015, 05:45:34 AM
How does this mathematical theory serve as a predictor for the human action of supply and demand, which directly impacts the price?
2106  Other / Off-topic / Re: Riemann hypothesis - Proof on: February 05, 2015, 05:41:16 AM
IF the OP doesn't have time to summarize the articles and share his opinion on them then I don't think we have the time to do the same.
2107  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Started getting paid 100% in Bitcoin starting with my last paycheck on: February 05, 2015, 05:28:58 AM
the average joe is not going to want such a volatile ass income.
It's not volatile income - it's volatile savings.

There's a big difference between the two, although people who live paycheck-to-paycheck might not know what savings are and so might not recognize the difference.

If a person who is paid regularly in bitcoin buys as much local currency as they'll need before their next paycheck on the same day they get paid and saves the rest, they are not affected by short term volatility.

That's a good point, as long as the BTC is spent quick (like within the pay period) the volatility means less.

Buy back in and figure out where I went wrong so it doesn't happen again.
2109  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am pretty confident we are the new wealthy elite, gentlemen. on: February 05, 2015, 05:12:01 AM
While I share the belief that bitcoin or something very like it will play a major role in the future, I think the road there is going to be a lot rougher.

I imagine we will see a huge boom then a bust, after that those who stick around will build the meaning full economy that will allow bitcoin or its successor to dominate.

One of the first posts on this thread, this guy/gal had it pretty right!
2110  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: NBC incorrectly implicates Bitcoin in Ransomware scam on: February 05, 2015, 04:49:22 AM
According to what I've heard previously, most of the ransomware is asking for bitcoin.
This is the first time I've heard of anyone asking for litecoin. Kind of bizarre to ask for LTC, if you think about it.

Bizarre indeed, but that's whats on the clip from NBC.

It's unfortunate that regular folks that only here about Bitcoin from this type of news source are going to get one more reason (in error) to associate bitcoin use with crime.
2111  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 5$ transfer fee between bank accounts on: February 05, 2015, 04:45:30 AM
There is a payroll company that will pay you your paycheck (where ever you work) in Bitcoin. There's a thread about here -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=913145.0;topicseen.

Essentially your company sends your pay to this third party who then converts it to BTC and deposits it in your address of choice.

If you're not keen on getting your whole paycheck in BTC check out Capital One 360 for checking, they have nearly no fees.
2112  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Campaign to BOYCOTT BITCOIN! on: February 05, 2015, 04:14:46 AM
So what's the word on the boycott, have you all started it yet?

NBC claimed that Ransomware virus scammers are asking for payments in Bitcoin (which is actually an error), which should help your cause!
2113  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: NBC incorrectly implicates Bitcoin in Ransomware scam on: February 05, 2015, 04:10:14 AM
The two are really one and the same as far as the public is concerned. Additionally you generally need to purchase bitcoin in order to purchase litecoin.

I would not be all that furious about this, it is inaccurate but not infuriating.

That's the problem, the public doesn't know the difference...and this just supports their misinformation about Bitcoin and crypto currency.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion on the severity of the error of course.
2114  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / NBC incorrectly implicates Bitcoin in Ransomware scam on: February 05, 2015, 02:46:46 AM
http://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/video/virus-allows-hackers-to-hold-your-computer-files-for-ransom-393994819594

Tonight NBC Nightly News presented a story about a virus scam where your PC files are threatened to be destroyed if you don't pay the scammers within a specific period of time. In the footage they show the ransom note asking for $500 of Litecoin but actually state that the scammers are asking for $500 of Bitcoin (and they add a Bitcoin graphic).

This unfairly associates Bitcoin with scams!

Anyone outraged? If so, email NBC at contact.nbcnews@nbcuni.com with the following message to let them know that they need to get their facts straight:

Dear NBC,

On your February 4th, 2015 broadcast you incorrectly implicated Bitcoin as the the crypto currency of choice of the Ransomware scammers, when in fact the scammers were asking for payment in another crypto currency (Litecoin). Your footage of the computer screen shows the countdown timer with the currency "Litecoin" named.

The error is akin to saying scammers asked for payment in Dollars when in fact they want Euros.

This may seem like a minor detail but for those of us looking to promote the positive uses of Bitcoin this error unfairly associates Bitcoin with crime. You've misrepresented the facts and hurt the image of Bitcoin.

Please have Brian Williams clarify the mistake in a future broadcast.

Thank you!
2115  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Donetsk, Kharkov, Lugansk - way to Russia. on: February 05, 2015, 02:25:56 AM
Three comments:

1) This poll doesn't make any sense - cleansing of speaking Russian? Cleansing of Russian speaking people?

2) The choices aren't collectively exhaustive, clearly the OP only sees one answer as the right answer

3) The number of responses (in the thousands) may indicate how many people from Russia or that region read visit this forum, which is REALLY cool
2116  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Both sides proven inaccurate about concealed carry on: February 05, 2015, 02:11:55 AM
It's been a year since concealed carry went into effect in Illinois, the last state to legalize it. Both sides were wrong about the consequences: concealed carry has neither led to a rash of shootings, nor a wave of crimes prevented through the intervention of armed citizens.

So crime has remained the same?

It may take longer than one year to see statistically valid results, but this interesting.
2117  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Interest on Debt to Surpass Defense, NonDefense Discretionary Spending - US on: February 04, 2015, 11:38:59 PM
Well with 10 years to plan for it you'd think we'd do something to fucking stop it!

How historic would it be for one US president to devote one term to paying off the debt...no additional spending, tightening our financial actions?

Of course the real challenge would be for the man or woman that comes after that president to not rack up a bunch of debt again. This would be the most humble act of a US president since George Washington stepped down after serving two terms (which set the precedent for a two term limit.)
2118  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Silk Road Mastermind Ross Ulbricht Convicted of All 7 Charges on: February 04, 2015, 11:33:57 PM
It's awful that in a system where everyone is innocent until proven guilty a judge can ban evidence that helps support the accused's innocence.

I mean, the guy isn't completely innocent, but he's not guilty of all the charges. Hopefully there's some good that can come out of this (like the good that has come out of Snowden's work.)

Warren Buffett, even though he advises against investing in it.
