How did they conduct the test? I'm not yet convinced that the people in the study were bad at remembering thing to begin with.

The real test is if you can remember your public bitcoin address!
1322  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Right now the Bitcoin trade is dependent on the banking system, how to fix that? on: July 02, 2015, 05:48:01 AM
Bitcoin is only truly dependent on the traditional banking system for the initial purchase or the sale of bitcoin. As long as owners keep their transactions in bitcoin you can completely avoid the banks!

The hardest part is really getting paid in bitcoin from your employer. I know there are services that will convert your paycheck to bitcoin but those companies rely on dealing with fiat and traditional banks.
1323  Economy / Economics / Re: Can bitcoin really save Greece? on: July 02, 2015, 05:30:17 AM
Bitcoin cannot save Greece, and it's not supposed to. Bitcoin is supposed to save people, and it can!

Giving people an alternative to any Government controlled fiat currency allows them to eliminate some country risk from their financial lives. There's also a secondary effect that Governments may do things differently if they know that an alternative currency exists, but the reality of this happening is driven by the people more than by Bitcoin.

Why does the timing of the halving have an implication over the timing of the forking? The two aren't really related are they?

Maybe Gavin is Neo and all the articles are the fog of the matrix...
1325  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hello Everyone! Not new to Bitcoin or the forum but time to introduce myself. on: July 02, 2015, 05:14:19 AM
Wow, living off the mining? Nicely done! You took a leap of faith and it delivered for you. I'd love to hear more about how you made this happen, how much volume you're seeing or time between earning the packages.
1326  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Video: Morgan Spurlock - Living On Bitcoin - [CNN Full Documentary] on: July 02, 2015, 04:52:56 AM
A nice blast from the past! I think Morgan did a good job representing bitcoin fairly - the good and the bad. It would be cool for him to do a look back at it to see how far we've come in a year. I know the episode was released in the fall/winter, but it was filmed in the summer as you can tell from the price of bitcoin and the footage.

It's also a good program for newcomers to bitcoin to watch. It explains how the system works REALLY well with graphics and easy to follow conversation.
1327  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Looking for Offers on The Highest Graded Casascius Coins [MS-69] on: July 02, 2015, 04:45:33 AM
Regardless of the sales, would you care to share pictures of your coins? It would be cool for us to see what they consider a 69 vs. 67.

Sounds like you won the lotto with that submission. What's the highest rating? 70? Good work!
1328  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTS] - MS66 .5 Brass Casascius Coin on: July 02, 2015, 04:42:58 AM
My bid of BTC0.75 still stands.

Since you've had no other offers, I think you should reconsider mine.

Thanks.

I have considered it and it is way too low.  Your bid price would be considered for a loose ungraded coin, but not for an MS66.  I am not looking to give this away.  I am just looking to move some of my duplicates.

Thanks for the offer.

Most ungraded Casascius coins are of the same quality of the graded ones, they just haven't been sent to ANACS to be slabbed and numbered. It's not like these Casascius coins actually get traded or used, passed around among people. They just sit in drawers or display cases.

I'll go up a little bit, but I think my price is quite fair, I think 1.6x face is decent. My offer remains open if you change your mind.

Good luck, get as much as you can for it!
I am not sure why you are offering a multiplayer of the face value of a coin. The value of a physical coin is going to be derived by the amount "loaded" onto the coin, how rare the coin is and what condition it is in as well as the reputation of the seller as to how well they package the coin, how quickly they ship, ect. Each quality is added to the other qualities. There is not any kind of a multiplier in this equation.

The reason why graded coins tend to sell for more then ungraded coins is because the owner of the coin has endured the expense of grading the coin and the risk that the coin may not come back as a high grade. A MS66 for a brass coin is a very high grade and is going to be very rare. I am also going to go out on a limb and say that you are not qualified to say with any authority as to what a particular coin will come back as, especially after looking at a few pictures on the Internet Wink

Good point on the ANACS fee. The multiplier is merely a way to compare one offer price against another or one coins sale price or value against another coin. The factors that go into the multiplier are face value, scarcity, demand premium. The multiplier isn't the equation, it's the answer. You're right that I can't grade coins, not in the slightest way, but you gotta agree that most of these coins are not handled or "in circulation" in the traditional sense.

DJ, I'll add the ANACS fee to my bid -> BTC0.85 (are there any other bids on the table?)
1329  Other / Politics & Society / Re: LGBT on: June 30, 2015, 11:58:31 PM
what do you think of this?

personally, i don't like this whole gay movement. but i don't care either. do what you want.

You seem conflicted - you don't like it but you also don't care and at the same time you say it's OK for LGBT folks to "do what you want". What if we persecuted you for being undecided?

This is kind of what LGBT folks may be going through. Being forced into a stereotype that they honestly don't believe in or feel in their heart. Or being told they can't love and life life with the person that they love simply because of the their gender. It's ridiculous. How can the government or a stranger tell you who you can and can't love (provided the person is an adult and mature enough to understand what love is and to make those decisions)?

This literally has zero impact on anyone else, yet many in the world feel compelled to say "No, you can't love that person." It's really, really silly.

I'm glad the US has granted the right to marry a same sex individual to everyone. Equality doesn't happen until all people have the same rights and the same opportunities.
1330  Other / Politics & Society / Re: NSA conducting widespread economic and industrial espionage against France on: June 30, 2015, 11:52:17 PM
This old news. It made US headlines in 2012. And yeah, the US is spying every country they deem relevant to the global conversation on anything. That said, so is every other developed country (except maybe Canada.) It's not fair to point the finger at the US, the only difference between them and other major countries is that they got CAUGHT!

Have you ever listened to anyone else's conversation without them knowing about it? Maybe in the office, at school, at a restaurant, on the train? If so you're just as guilty of spying...cause that's really what's happening.

I believe the US and other country's should tell their citizens when and how they'll be spying on them, Snowden's release helped the US. Positive action (for the People) came about from it.
1331  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTS?] - ANACS MS 67 Silver Casascius Tenth with Exception on: June 30, 2015, 11:47:41 PM
I think that quote from Nubbins was in response to me talking about valuation of coins (in terms of the price offered times face value, or 2x face value) when comparing one Casascius coin's market price to another Casascious coin's market price. I agree with Nubbins math. However the valuation, the answer that Nubbins math provides, needs to be thought of in terms of 2x, 3x, etc. when compared to a similar coin with a different market price or valuation.

Lesbian Cow, I'm glad you're willing to entertain the side conversations. I think it keeps Casascius coins relevant and new people educated. It also keeps your thread floating on the first page!
1332  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTS?] - ANACS MS 67 Silver Casascius Tenth with Exception on: June 30, 2015, 04:56:56 PM
Hi Possum,

Given bids we have received for the coin, both in this thread and via PM, I humbly suggest you are wrong.

You also come across as a douche-nozzle.

Cheers!

The coin has been "tampered" from its original state, like trying to polish patina off an old fiat coin. I'd only offer face value, but that's just me!

Haha, a "douche-nozzle"...that's hilarious, i've never heard that said before. I like it. I agree with you, the market is what sets the value of things and clearly people want this coin and are willing to pay a premium for it! (Maybe I should add BTC1 to my tenth and gain some automatic extra return from it!)

This commentary is all just conversation, it's fun to debate a bit, no? And alternative opinions keep people thinking. Don't be so sensitive. The most important thing is that these coins are relevant and worth talking about.
1333  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Silver Wallets - A New Kind of Physical Storage [MEGA SUMMER SALE!] on: June 30, 2015, 04:53:43 PM
Where have I seen these before? Oh yeah...Mike Caldwell had a thread about these a few years back, he called them Casascius coins.

Why do you claim this is a new kind of physical storage when it's been around since 2011. And to add insult to injury you practically copy Mike's design with your silver and brass version, not cool!

$80 is way too steep for a brass token. I wonder how many of these you're actually selling.

Our coins look nothing like Mike's and they are not brass. They are new as in something different...mike did not mainly sell unloaded coins. I always see you making snarky remarks in physical coin threads like you are some expert. If you think Mike invented adding some gilt onto silver coins you really are clueless.

Come on Blazed, let's be honest about this:

1) Design 1 and Design 1 with Gold Trim are VERY similar to Caldwell's coins, the obverse side with the BTC is nearly the same. You have added some detail, but the foundation of this coin was first seen on Casascius issues.

2) Both designs are silver, Caldwell's coins (of similar design) are also silver. I never mentioned brass, in fact the first person to do so was you as you tried to misdirect my claim of how much your coins resemble Casascius. To even have a coin that's silver "with gold trim" is a copy from Mike, direct copy. Let's not look past this obvious point.

3) You claim this is a "new kind of physical storage" yet it's been around for nearly 5 years, Caldwell was first to sell them loaded and first to sell them unloaded as rounds. In fact, the only reason you can't sell them loaded is because the US Feds put a stop to Mike doing it!

It's cool if you want to also sell coins like this, I wish you good luck with it. But please don't represent the idea as original when it clearly isn't, to do so is deceptive...especially to newcomers in the forum.

And, for the record I think the price is fair - I'll take back my original complaint about that, it wasn't needed. I totally agree that coins like this sell at a premium above the metal value.

Thanks for hearing out my point of view. I'll try to keep my comments from coming across as snarky. I'm as much an expert about this as you are. I've put a lot of my own research into what people price these coins at and I think my opinions (on other threads), particularly about price valuations are valuable to insight that provide sellers and potential buyers with additional information to accurately gauge the value these coins have.

Hello Possum577. Smiley

You seem to be quite intelligent and well spoken, so I'm hoping that we are able to have a gentlemen's discussion about this.

While I do agree that one can easily see the resemblance to Casascius coins, it does not at all mean that Silver Wallets copied or stole anything from Mike.

1)

Mike created a simple and clean image using the Bitcoin logo on a physical coin.  It would make sense for anyone involved in physical coins designed specifically for Bitcoin to use the logo in some shape or form.

With absolutely no disrespect to Mike, this doesn't equate to Mike being the creator of such a design or resulting in any future coins to be made in similar fashion to be copies or replicates. I could provide several examples using coins and flags or other symbols, but I think one can easily draw the inferences I'm trying to make.

2)

Coin designing has been around for over a century and there are several thousand coins that feature silver with gold trim.

Again, this has a lot to do with the fact that just because he was the first into the Bitcoin niche of physical bitcoins does not make him the originator and sole proprietor of such designs.  By your logic, you could argue that Mike has copied from the countless coin designers before him.  That is just silly.

Mike simply had an inspiration to create his own take on a beautiful designed coin and that is exactly what Silver Wallets has done as well.

3)

Silver Wallets are actually the first to deliver the ability to offer buyer funded Bitcoin physical coins with the use of private keys.  This is a completely solid and legitimate claim to "A new kind of physical storage".

Cliff notes;

Silver Wallets are beautifully designed.  They may hold some resemblance to other coins but are completely original and professionally crafted.

Great points, great points. I think the conversation has run its course. I'm glad to see more talk of sales...here's a free bump just in time for people coming home from work around GMT!

Great information and the website is very engaging and user friendly. If your information were in a post it should be "stickied" at the top of this thread. Maybe someone can get the link to your guide added to the Newbie Read Me thread.
1335  Economy / Economics / Re: Bank of Bitcoin on: June 30, 2015, 04:45:57 PM
Coinbase could easily be the leader in lending if they wanted to expand their banking operation beyond deposits. Lending in bitcoin is risky. The price is volatile and the inherent anonymity of the payment and ownership system could make it difficult to prove that one person ever received a loan and is therefore required/obligated to pay it back. The fact that many countries don't fully acknowledge bitcoin as a currency could hurt the company's chances of getting money back when someone bails on their loan.

There's so much risk involved and risk increases the interest rates, which makes it harder for people to payback a loan (or even want one beyond what's available in the fiat based traditional banking market.)

I think bitcoin-centric insurance needs to come first, then lending can follow.
1336  Economy / Economics / Re: Collapse Spiral on: June 30, 2015, 04:41:07 PM
Interesting, well admitting it is the first step.

The only entities that are too big to fail are countries, major municipalities. The debt should be repaid but perhaps an ease on the interest rate would help (and certainly a loosening of the pay back period.) It's nice to see the US is keeping its distance thus far, allowing PR to figure it out, but in the end this one will be the US' problem. Hopefully something can be done to ease the burden.

The article didn't talk about how far off PR is from making its payments. I'd also like, to know what can be done to increase PR's tax revenue.

The People.

Everyone seems to forget that point, no one rules unless the people follow. If you don't like your leadership, don't follow.
