1241  Other / Politics & Society / Re: UK and US demands to access encrypted data are "unprincipled and unworkable" on: July 07, 2015, 10:47:38 PM
Isn't the point of these Country's respective secret intelligence / central intelligence departments to take encrypted or coded data and decode it to see what intelligence can be gained for national security?

Now they want corporations to do that work for them? If they want our encrypted data they should learn how to unencrypt it on their own AND work directly with the People of their country to get approval to access it.

Let's leave the corporations out of this - they really have nothing to do with it. They shouldn't be deciding to provide access to our data on our behalf. And they shouldn't be put in a position to have to choose between their customers or their government.

Who ever wins - if you want a free wooden display case let me know - I have tons of them.

Hi Blazed, those cases look nice - where did you get them? What size coin case do they fit? Very slick!
1243  Economy / Economics / Re: Miners selling coins sets the price floor ? on: July 07, 2015, 08:55:45 PM
Who said the miners set the floor on BTC price?

To a small extent they make a market (determine a price) because they're receiving brand new coins, but their volume is a drop in the ocean of bitcoin transaction volume in a day. The real price is set by the volume of buyers vs. sellers.
1244  Economy / Economics / Re: How much Bitcoin to move to the UK/USA ? on: July 07, 2015, 08:52:50 PM
"Simple teenager with big dreams"...that's the best way to start a move to the UK or US!

I'd suggest moving to the US, it has cheaper cost of living and potentially more business opportunity than England. If you want to stay closer to home, go to England.

I'd also suggest having BTC25-40 with you when you make the trip. Depending where you go in the US it can be quite expensive (NYC, DC, Chicago, Miami, LA, SF) for housing and you'll need some coin to hold you over until you can get a job. What kind of work do you plan to do?

Good luck to you!
1245  Other / Politics & Society / Re: If Greece fails, can the country disappear? on: July 07, 2015, 05:46:19 PM
So they default on their debt and they're left to figure it out on their own. No one will lend them money. Building back their economic system will take a super long time. A lot of people will be left broke (Pensioner's, long term unemployed) and they'll have to deal with that situation or not deal with it all.

But you don't think the void of strength will usher in some new power or political brokering, i.e., Turkey coming in to save the day and raise their flag overhead at the same time? I realize Turkey would be the LAST country the Greeks would allow to come in, it's just an example.

Good to know that Greece isn't going to disappear. Good to know I don't have a Greece pension. I'm a little bummed someone confirmed here that countries can't be sold on eBay, wtf?
1246  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Who Did 7/7? on: July 07, 2015, 05:42:25 PM
These poll choices are all kind of overlapping, aren't they? I feel like you're trying to force us into a few specific choices that will help you prove some theory you have on the event.

Why do you say "we have no idea who did it" when the four suicide bombers have been identified?
1247  Economy / Economics / Re: TAXATION IN NYS on: July 07, 2015, 05:39:51 PM
Amph has the best plan - just use them as BTC.

For tax advice, you should probably go to the NYS department of revenue website to see what they have to say about it first. I'm sure there's an article on it. And if not, you may have more liberty to make your own call on how you treat it - property vs. income.

And you could also look at how NYS treats any gambling winnings.
1248  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin at the Tour de France!!! on: July 07, 2015, 07:03:26 AM
I'm bumping this because the Tour de France has started again and I want to know if anyone is seeing any Bitcoin related references, signs, or running-next-to-bikes shenanigans.

I think this event is a great way to get some free press around the world...

Anyone seen anything? Heard anything?
1249  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTS] Casascius 0.5 BTC Brass on: July 07, 2015, 06:10:59 AM

Thanks.
1250  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTS]Casascius Brass halves ungraded (2013) on: July 07, 2015, 06:03:59 AM
I'll bid BTC0.75 for one of the coins.
I sent you a Personal Message regarding this.

Thanks for your quick reply, I look forward to discussing this with you.
1251  Economy / Economics / Re: Can the US win the currency war? on: July 07, 2015, 05:38:32 AM
with an 18 trillion dolar national debt, the currency war is pretty crazy the debt keeps on growing and nothing cant stop it, the question is how much debt can the u.s population can support http://www.usdebtclock.org/

The US debt is actually at $17.4T. And in per capita terms, the US comes in third behind Japan and Ireland -> http://www.bloomberg.com/visual-data/best-and-worst/most-government-debt-per-person-countries

National Debt is not a US invention, so it's not fair to use this as a reason the Dollar shouldn't be the currency standard. Stability is the best reason.

1253  Economy / Economics / Re: Buying stocks with BTC!!!! on: July 07, 2015, 05:15:56 AM
Bitcoin's in a weird place - is it currency? is it an investment? That definition is an important part in answering what one can do with it. One can't buy things with an investment but can with currency.
1254  Other / Politics & Society / If Greece fails, can the country disappear? on: July 07, 2015, 05:07:49 AM
If Greece fails, can the country disappear?

What if the worst happens? The country gets "acquired" by Turkey or Cyprus or something...what an awful outcome.

Greece, the Greek people have brought so many great things to the world that to lose their existence as a formal place and country would be really, really sad.

Apparently the Greeks voted No because they have nothing to lose, it's kind of admirable - going into the riskiest part of their future, on their own, as confidently as they entered it.

1256  Economy / Economics / Re: Will bitcoin usher in a new global perestroika? on: July 07, 2015, 04:55:06 AM
Ready for the changes, but I think changes will be slow, even if use of bitcoin grows wildly over the next 5 years. Banks have a huge role and a lot of ways to serve a need that bitcoin can't serve (that also earns the bank money). It may be possible for traditional banks and Bitcoin to coexist peacefully, which may be the best option because it would produce fewer enemies of Bitcoin.

As for Russia, I think Putin's mad control over the Russian world is the biggest challenge for bitcoin's success there.
1257  Other / Meta / Re: Just curious...why does my activity number stay the same after multiple posts?? on: July 07, 2015, 04:49:19 AM
One more thing to add here, the Forum makes the calculation to determine what your activity is way, way too complicated.

You get the lesser of 1 activity point for each day you've been on the forum or you number of posts. Also you must post once every two week period to collect the activity points for that period.
1258  Economy / Economics / Re: Greece debt crisis: Bitcoin benefits from market turmoil on: July 07, 2015, 04:44:18 AM
I agree that there's a lot of conjecture over what's driving the rise, and we could all take a side and debate it (which would end up being silly). It is cool to see the alternative option be bitcoin (no surprise), but what media coverage has there been so far mentioning bitcoin? I'm sure I haven't see the articles. The real benefit comes when more people learn about Bitcoin as a result - and the price bump is fun too.

1259  Economy / Economics / Re: Can bitcoin help the world's unbanked? on: July 07, 2015, 04:37:27 AM
I think bitcoin can help the world's unbanked, underserved and it would be great if that became reality. The problem I see is access. If people aren't being served by a bank they either are very poor or live in a very remote part of the world, which doesn't bode well for internet access for those people which is the biggest requirement for engaging in bitcoin regularly.

How can we over come that gap?
1260  Economy / Economics / Re: Can the US win the currency war? on: July 07, 2015, 04:33:29 AM
Ransomer, how old are you? (not a sarcastic question).

The "language war" as you call it wasn't won by the first to create or bring life to the internet, it was won by the spread of business - American business and English business. English, the language, is referred to as the language of business and I therefore has grown into the the common language for people of different country's to adopt to connect with each other.

I wouldn't give the US credit for this as much as I'd give credit to the UK. The UK dominated business before the US did. The UK is in the proximity of more different languages than the US. It's not called American, it's called English, because it was created by the English and the US was first populated by the English.

The Dollar has become the current global standard for currency because of the success of the US economy over the last 50 years. I wouldn't guarantee that it will continue for another 50 years. A lot of people think China will become the next standard for currency. A lot of that has to do with stability and volume of economy.

Why do you think of it as a war?
