Any idea how the trezor could be used to sign longer messages? Like if you wanted to sign a contract that was a few pages long.
...

Everything digital could be reduced to a single hash. Then sign the hash that corresponds to the document.

It expects a little to much in the way of technical skill on the part of the user. I thought about this today when i found myself needing to sign a message longer than the trezor would allow.
...

i thing that getting a hash of a file s as simple as 1 command? like sha256 contract.xml and it returns the string with hash value right there in the terminal. signing that as usual with your favorite bitcoin client. it is two steps but two small steps.

It still wouldn't have been appropriate for me to say. Here is a hash of the doccument: blablabla. Hash the document yourself to make sure you get the same hash. Now here is a signature of that hash: blablabla. Not as a businessman. You cant put barriers like that between people and your service. Even though in theory it is as simple as you said if they are using linux.

And actually it wouldnt have worked with bitrated.com (which is where i wanted to use an address stored on my trezor but couldn't). It's an automated process. I cant "explain" to it that its a signature of the hash of the document rather than the signature of the document that it asked for.
2144  Economy / Speculation / Re: I AM HODLING on: January 16, 2015, 05:27:23 PM
I feel weird but, as an attempt to chase my losses, I just deposited some more fiat on bitstamp. I can't tell anything to my friends or gf, they already think i'm a poor fool, so I tell u bros. Hodl me.

Let me tell you a story. My words will hodl you. I call this story the "the night of the living legacy banking system".

It was a cold dark middle of the day last week. I wasn't able to pay my wifes credit card because they hadn't sent us a bill for some reason and it was getting close to a month and i didn't want to get hit by interest payments. So i went to see if it was on my online banking and wasnt. So i called and waited on hold for about 15 minutes. When they finally answered i said hey why Isn't this credit card showing up on my online banking. They said its because its under my wifes name. I pointed out that we share a bank account. They said that didnt matter. So my wife hadnt used online banking, i do all of the money management. So we had to create an online banking account for her. We created it, filled out a bunch of forums and annoying crap, we get logged in and no credit card. I call back. Wait 15 minutes again... I said forget this just let me pay it over the phone. They said ok how would you like to pay it. I said ill just use my debit card. No that wont work. Ill just use my credit card then, i know how to pay that one off, no thats not going to work either. I said ok well how can i pay it off. they said they need my bank account number and routing number. So i asked how do i get that? They tell me i have to log into my online banking and find an electronic statement. So i find it and i ask "so how much do i owe". Guess what, he cant tell me. Hes not allowed to tell me how much i need to pay off. I can say "please pay off the credit card" and he will do it, but he wont tell me how much im paying.... Well this is just great for my accounting. I point out that ill know exactly how much it was as soon as the transaction goes through, doesnt matter. I point out that i might overdraw, i ask, can you atleast tell me if it will over draw me? Nope. Cant tell me. So i say ok well this was annoying but how can i avoid it next time atleast. He says well you could become a co user on the card then it would get added to your online banking. I say ok lets do that. He says ok well we need to send you a forum in the physical paper mail for me to sign. Like the post office and mail box system for christ sake. I say can you email it to me and ill fax it back. NOPE. So i say ok go ahead and send the damn thing. NOPE. He needs to speak to my wife and of course shes not here. I point out that i cant sign it if its got her name on it. NOPE doesnt matter. He needs to talk to her to send a letter that will take a week to arrive that i cant sign anyway. Shoot me in the fucking head.

THIS. THIS is our competition and the price is falling. People who are selling so they can buy back into THAT are idiots.

Any idea how the trezor could be used to sign longer messages? Like if you wanted to sign a contract that was a few pages long.

I know for maximum security you need to be able to see what you are signing on the trezor but maybe there is some reasonable middle ground for when people dont need that much security? I mean even if someone is spoofing client side the worst they could do is trick you into signing something other than what you intended. As long as it wasn't a transaction than its an acceptable risk. By tricking you in this way they wouldnt actually be getting your private key. And unless they are in such control over your computer that they are man in the middle brute force projecting pixels onto your screen, or part of some vast conspiracy, when you went to verify your signature with a third party you would immediately know you had been compromised in said relatively contained fashion.

It could be bad though if they tricked you into signing a transaction. Does anyone suppose there is a way for the trezor to be sure that, when it is signing a message that is too long to be reviewed on the trezor screen that at the very least it is signing something other than a transaction? One idea is that the trezor forces a concatination onto the end of any long message it signed. For example: signed using trezor. Any message that was being signed that ended with "signed using trezor" shouldnt be validated by the bitcoin network as a transaction. I know that transaction scripting is fairly robust in some ways but not that robust, is it?

Ok anyway that was less of a simple question and more of a stream of consciousness but thoughts?

It expects a little to much in the way of technical skill on the part of the user. I thought about this today when i found myself needing to sign a message longer than the trezor would allow. And i could have done it. But i just didn't think normal people would go through that extra step to verify so i found myself creating an old fashion air gapped cold storage machine. It was really sad to step backward like that after becoming accustomed to my awesome trezor.

Just consider all the publicly owned utility services like electricity.

Electricity is almost entirely privately provided in the united states. Maybe the hoover damn is an exception? Maybe a few others? Pretty rare if it exists at all. Look at your electricity bill sometime. See who you are paying it to. It will probably be a private corporation.

Ever been to a Corporation Commission (called by different names in different States) meeting? They are State run agencies that control how much the private electric companies charge for the electricity (among other things). Their people are often elected by the popular vote, but sometimes are appointed. Once the officials get into office, you have to trust that they are doing the best job that they can to make sure that the power companies are getting enough pay for the electricity that they sell, so they can adequately meet expenses. You also have to trust that are not allowing the power companies to overcharge the people - like NASA charges $100 for a $15 wrench.

Sure, these officials can be impeached (fired) from office if they are screwing either the power companies or the people. And, sure, there are citizen watch-dog groups that are constantly trying to keep an eye on the whole operation. But there is a whole bunch of bribery going on. And being government directed, there's always going to be a bunch of waste and misappropriation of funds.

Smiley

Interesting stuff. I don't think it refutes anything i said though does it? Just an interesting aside?

People in the U.S. don't fear or hate socialism. In fact, they willingly use it all the time. The like it. They thrive on it. Consider a bar situation, or a church meeting, or the gang from work that goes out to the restaurant for lunch. Many popular television sitcoms are socialistic in nature. Sex in the City.

Really? Man i must be out of touch. I had no idea that it was normal for a group of work colleagues to go out to eat and threaten to murder the wealthiest among them unless he agrees to pay for their lunches as well. I really need to get out more.

Most people don't like the idea of the wealthiest among them being the one dictating what, where and when they eat either. Can you really have a democratic society with widespread inequality?

Well ok so my example described socialism and you seem to be describing mercantilism. Yes i think its true that most people would not support either your example or mercantilism. It should be noted that you definitely did not describe capitalism. Under capitalism every person is free to eat any where every they like assuming they can afford it, and if they all eat at the same restaurant than its because each and every individual personally chose to eat at the restaurant at the same time that the others made the same choice.

would you like to work hard in life and get some or all of it taken away because someone else doesn't work as hard as you.

Working hard doesn't ensure you'll have enough to live. Sometimes life sucks and you need help.

Yea of course. If you want to help someone than do it. I don't think there is a libertarian anywhere who would suggest that anyone should be violently prohibited from helping someone who needs help. We just dont think that alice should be allowed to threaten violence against bob because charly is down on his luck. If alice wants to do something to help charly than she can give away some of her own property, and if bob wants to do something to help than he can give away some of his own property, but alice has no right to force bob to give away his property to charly.

NeobitCEO and I have made arrangements for me to provide escrow for this project. Do note that this is in no way an endorsement of this project on my part. Read this entire post before sending funds.

You do not need to contact me or get my approval before sending funds, you may send at your own discretion at any time. However you will be required to digitally sign instructions using one of the addresses you sent from in order for me to release or return the funds. Do not send from a wallet that is not under your direct control, do not send from an exchange. If you do send from a wallet that is not under your control, i will be keeping your bitcoins as part of my compensation for the service i am providing and will not be held liable for the loss of those funds. If in doubt just use https://blockchain.info/wallet. If you do not know how to produce a digital signature that is no problem, I will be more than happy to walk you through every step in the process when the time comes. My fee is 0.02BTC if the transaction is less than 1BTC and 2% if greater than 1BTC. You may have your funds released or refunded at any time upon request and presentation of a valid digital signature.

If you read and agree to all of these terms than my address is: 19s6V3wXR2xHXmop8NPUt6KVxkmU5wKZbL

Also received a Trezor today ... much smaller a device than I imagined ... not that is a problem .. but god the display is small.

Does feel a bit weird trusting my BTC to this little device via a website.

Yeah, that's true!  Cheesy

But as one of the early trezor users I can assure you, that all of my BTC are still there!
I'm loving it!  Grin

Here soon I am looking at buying a Trezor, have you found any bugs or issues with it? Just wondering.

None that I know of. The software is improving rapidly. In the first release you couldn't sign messages with your trezor account but lately they have implemented that as well.
You can't assign names to addresses AFAIK, but that's already on the to-do list.

names on accounts would be more useful to me personally.

if you have lost it that could be a possibility.. unless you confirm your account by signing a transaction from one of your known accounts like an excrow account or something.

I can use my OTC account address. Linked in OP of my reputation thread. See link in signature. Smiley

the culture predominant in Africa does not led itself toward economic progress

Yes this is exactly right. Its all in the culture. Westerners happened to stumble upon a set of values that are conducive to wealth creation while the africans have, for various reasons, not developed these sorts of values. The values that africans have are actually sort of noble, its not for lack of morality or anything like that, its unfortunate that the right values for wealth creation are so unintuitive.

Guess it's time to hand out copies of Atlas Shrugged, instead of bibles.

Well said sir.

Except for one point. Bibles are way more important, because they lead people to eternal life.
