221  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US Government Seeks Blockchain Solutions for Contract Bidding System on: June 22, 2017, 03:43:32 PM
Neither positive, nor negative I think... They can have their private blockchains to play with.
222  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will maintaining the network security always be profitable? on: June 20, 2017, 11:22:10 PM
One can only speculate. I either hope that somehow mining will always be profitable or that the price of not having Bitcoin is way bigger than maintaining the blockchain at a cost.

Unlimited free energy is impossible. Energy will require resources to get in the foreseeable future.
223  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Unicode 10.0 on: June 20, 2017, 11:19:03 PM
What is a unicode? Is it an application used to program like C++?

Maybe this will make it a bit more clear for you.
224  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: hold your savings in the cloud rather than at a bank. on: June 20, 2017, 11:16:11 PM

… which seems almost tragically anachronistic given that we have apps today to send funds directly to a recipient’s mobile phone or email address.

Which still relies on banks and accounts Cheesy

This article has the same goal than me when i read the first agression-law (Europa - end of 2013) that it can take (my) saving from bank in case of bankrupt (of the bank).

Which makes us remember this classic Bitcointalk thread...

Anyways, a better alternative to the cloud: cold storage Smiley
225  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Unicode 10.0 on: June 20, 2017, 11:06:46 PM
Wow, this has been announced for quite some time! Almost two years ago, I remember really well... It's finally here! Smiley A great step for Bitcoin, indeed.
226  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: SegWit2x will get activated for sure? on: June 20, 2017, 11:00:47 PM
It's not a decent increase, it's a really, really big increase... Especially comparing to support to other consensus proposals.

Maybe this is what will start scaling for Bitcoin. If so, great! I think this is what pleases most of the crowd...
227  Other / Meta / Re: What is a -ve trust?? on: June 13, 2017, 11:24:06 AM
Trust is mostly earned with successful trades. So a successful trade gets positive and an unsuccessful one negative... There may be other reasons for +/-ve trust, if so, they're explained in the people's profiles.
228  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ledger expects to sell 1 million hardware wallets this year on: June 12, 2017, 02:42:59 PM
Wow, well, this was unexpected. A million Ledgers is a really high number. I'm also curious regarding Trezor (which seems to have the biggest pie of the hardware wallet market). Indeed this shows quite a growth (and how useful these little machines are).
229  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: We need to rethink the way we look at 1 BTC value... on: June 11, 2017, 11:48:52 PM
Everyone starting out with Bitcoin eventually learns Bitcoin is divisible really soon. Exchanges sell less than 1 BTC... So I don't really see how this should be rethinked.
230  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: **Download the blockchain here, updated regularly ** on: June 11, 2017, 11:46:30 PM
Please don't listen to bullshit from non-technical people. Bitcoin Core does initial download faster only in certain conditions, that nowadays could be considered laboratory-like. With the real user environments (especially technical newbies or people outside USA) it is much more reliable and oftentimes faster to do this using Bittorrent or cloud file storage.
This is simply untrue.

Unless your internet connection is very slow the vast majority of time is spent in validation and data handling even on a 24 core host.

If you download separately you cannot overlap the download and validation.  So unless your download is nearly infinitely fast it must be slower.

This experiment is conducted regularly in real conditions at least with every release (since we benchmark for synchronization performance regressions).

Finally. Maybe this time these downloads are finally debunked and a bunch of people stop wasting their time.
231  Economy / Speculation / Re: price after segwit? on: June 11, 2017, 11:31:55 PM
So segwit will supposedly be activated this Fall right? This should mean blocks are no longer near full, transaction fees go back down to hopefully 10 cents or so, and sending bitcoin will go back to taking tens of minutes instead of hours.

Sending Bitcoin is and will still be instant. However I do agree we need fees like they used to be... We're yet to see if SegWit will provide such.

What will all this do to the price?

If price is the only thing you want to discuss, then it's maybe better to have this on the speculation section I think. Anyways, if what happened on other coins applies to Bitcoin, the price will go down, at least for a few days... Which is great as I'll be able to get cheap coins Smiley
232  Economy / Services / Re: Poloniex Push-Notification-Bot for SLACK (beta) on: June 11, 2017, 11:28:14 PM
I was going to request access, but I now see that it's necessary to give API key + secret. Is there a way to have the secret on the client side only?
233  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Is there any golden rules you follow in regards to investments? on: June 09, 2017, 09:57:08 AM
Are there some rules like this you should set up as to prevent getting burned?

Never invest more than what you can afford to lose.
234  Economy / Services / Re: Poloniex Push-Notification-Bot for SLACK (beta) on: June 09, 2017, 12:15:27 AM
Sounds interesting, how many users are you targeting with this beta? I'd like to try, please reserve me a spot. I'll setup Slack and I'll be sending you a PM
235  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ** Warning ** on: June 09, 2017, 12:00:06 AM
If true, than the decision is easy, go with what makes you and anyone else in that position sleep well at night. If the site is still used, it might be easy to contact with all the users and tell them to move their coins asap, no?

Anyways, seems unlikely. Such a site unattended? people using it without seeing it being updated?
236  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Storing on Exchange vs mobile? on: June 08, 2017, 11:56:02 PM
What if you can't find any other place to store your coin? I am not talking about BTC that has wallet support everywhere.

You are in the Bitcoin Discussion section, everyone assumes you're talking about BTC to begin with.

And so far I have not found anyone who have been able to motivated why Mobile wallets are only safe enough to store pocket money compared to Desktop Wallets. They are both essentially computers that both can have problem with malware. But I see no reason why mobile have a bigger problem with malware than regular computers, and there are good virus scanners on phone also. I use BitDefender virus and malware scanner on both my PC and my phone. Please motivate.

There are several factors to this. Most people know how to protect themselves and identify infections on desktop. However this platform is considered more "unsafe" than phones, because there are many computers out there (mainly with Windows), thus hackers have more to gain developing for this platform.

Smartphones are more "recent" and considered safer because there are less viruses out there. However, with the growth of these systems, hackers are "encouraged" to find holes in softwares, and people wouldn't probably recognize if their system was compromised.

Common issues people have with coins on phones is when phones are rooted/jailbroken...

Phones can serve as cold storage too, and be pretty good at it. Except if they're compromised to begin with Smiley ex: bad RNG.

exchange... i don't really trust mobile wallets..

popualar exchanges have cold wallets.

Probably. How are you so sure of that? How do you know your coins are stored on those cold wallets and not on hot wallets?

If you have Google Authenticator + 2 step verification (mail code) enabled, isn't that like really good defense vs getting hacked? I have the most important coin (XBY!!!) stored in offline wallet but I feel like my small parts of other coins are pretty safe on Exchanges with those autheticators and such.

They may be safe from hackers that want to access your account, but not from hackers that are aiming for the whole exchange, or the exchange itself.

Did this for me, might be useful for someone else. Not sure if it has been done before, or if it is of interest to update the first post with this info, but I'm still posting for those who might be curious.

Yes/No explanation
If a campaign has Yes/No as escrow status, it means that the person holding the funds also manages the campaign. This is a conflict of interest, but shouldn't be a big problem if the person doing escrow is trusted.

Please use the following format if something is missing or incorrect:
Campaign Name (Thread)
Payment period: Weekly? Monthly? On a specific date?
Payment method: To BTC address or credit to an account?
Minimum posts: What is the minimum post count you have to have to get a payment?
Maximum posts: What is the maximum number of posts you will receive payment for?
Payments: How much do you get after a month/week? Example: S: 0.1BTC per month.
Escrow: Did they escrow funds? If so, who is doing the escrow?
Miscellaneous: Other information that might be important

238  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hello. New here. on: June 07, 2017, 12:06:23 PM
So I got ito BTC around jan 2012.

I unfortunately lost all my coins in a HDD failure.

I then got into altcoins and ran with that for a year. I stopped it all together and completely forgot about coins until this resurgence.
Is this a continued rally for behind the scenes works soon to be unveiled?

I guess yes, you can say something are happening behind the scenes (or at least it is believed there are), but most of it is out in the open. The "works" you're referring to can be the scaling proposals that have been discussed for quite long, and that seems to be somewhat driving prices.

I'm male, and I'll send you a sample ASAP via PM. Would you accept using an escrow?
240  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Stop Calling It A Bubble. on: June 06, 2017, 05:39:04 PM
I think the bubble effect is currently superior to people throwing money at Bitcoin Wink This bubble will settle when the scaling debate settles too... This is my bet.

True. I recently found a blog of when bitcoin was at 100$,I think  it will go to10k and 100k soon , definitely not a bubble.
Megaupload2.0 and Bitcache's  launch will be this august, price  will increase exponentially and bitcoin will consolidate as the best currency.

This is vaporware, he's been tweeting this like crazy and said that this is going to revolutionize Bitcoin, but he didn't even explain what whatever he's trying to launch will do. He has nothing to do with a price hike. Unless he's the whale buying all these coins Cheesy
