1161  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do we stop the division in the Bitcoin community? on: April 06, 2016, 06:54:50 AM
There is nothing wrong with the submission of a opposing implementation to Bitcoin Core, because it is in the best interest of the technology to make suggestions and to develop new ideas to improve the technology.

I think the answer is here. People propose what they think it's best for the Bitcoin community and the community choses what works best and everyone merges under the same set of rules. After settling on a new set of rules, we have no division anymore.
1162  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin already using too much power by 2020? on: April 05, 2016, 10:04:17 AM
Why should devs work on something that's not their problem? This a problem for mining companies.

Similar numbers for power consumption have already been discussed on the forums. I don't think power usage in the Bitcoin network will increase linearly, but usage will increase more slowly in the coming years due to better efficiency in the mining chips Smiley
1163  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What you need to know about the Panama Papers on: April 03, 2016, 09:00:19 PM
... And then mainstream media still feed people the idea that only Bitcoin is used by criminals Roll Eyes I wonder if people would do all kinds of crap and laundering if there was a public fiat ledger where each transaction and addresses could be seen. My guess is it would avoid many things.

This is what the banking system is allowing: full anonymity for doing whatever you feel like, whether it's against the law or not and doing it in a way that no one knows about unless some angel sent from above has the balls to leak these things out.

And people still reject Bitcoin because f*ck logic Roll Eyes
1164  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mozilla cofounders adblocking Brave browser will pay you bitcoin to see safe ads on: April 03, 2016, 02:45:09 PM
This was already discussed on the forums. I think it's pretty interesting, like I said on the other thread, and I'll probably try it and switch to their browser if they go live.
1165  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Browser that will pay BTC on: April 02, 2016, 11:18:21 PM
This sounds really good! I'll probably use this browser once it starts paying out. Can't wait!

looks like it need us to provide our identity to cashout the bitcoin from the system, i personally not comfort with the kyc or input our identity to the internet, anyways i ever try some kind of service like this but it paid me through paypal,

Quote
If you want to spend the money yourself, you'll need to verify your identity with a phone number and email address

It's just phone + email. Use a random number and a temporary email. Or a separate phone number + email.
1166  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory 0.94 is out on: April 02, 2016, 10:57:01 PM
Interesting... Just booted Armory to see if I could capture a logfile with the "connection lost" toast and Armory stopped syncing out of the blue. Just opened it and it got stuck here:

Opening it again while writing this. Meanwhile here's the logfile. The connection lost error occurred once and can be seen there:

hi,

0.93 has filled my HD. only 400MB left.  Grin

in which folder is the DB stored? i think deleting the DB, upgrading to 0.94.1 might be the best solution.

Platform?

For Windows it is C:\Users<user>\AppData\Roaming\Armory folder (source)
For Linux it is /home/<user>/.armory
For OS X it is /Library/Application Support/Armory (I think)
1168  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Is Haobtc legit? on: April 02, 2016, 08:44:40 PM
HaoBTC appears to be legit. They are backed by a mining farm that's pretty well documented here and that's how they pay interest. That being said, I never tried their service and I advise against storing coins you can't afford to lose (or any coins, really) in an online wallet.
1169  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory 0.94 is out on: April 02, 2016, 07:00:18 PM
Lemme see your log files, maybe there is a clue there.

I can post them. Just downloaded, checked and ran the installer for 0.94.0.1, updating now. I'll post logfile for this session if the notification pops up.

lol also my mistake. he says this happens reliably after Armory is shut down

Correct, I've also seen that behavior (right after shutdown)

EDIT: great, lol, I'm exhausting my RAM on purpose (Armory + Chrome with 30+ tabs open) and the error isn't appearing. I guess I'll see tomorrow with a longer sync.
1170  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory 0.94 is out on: April 02, 2016, 06:46:57 PM
Finally managed to get my machine properly synced after updating, took around 3 hours to rebuild the new database, I think. I am yet to update to the versions that re-enables auto bitcoind management. Migration was fairly smooth after moving my wallet files to the new datadir. Old database was 60,2 GB. New is 141 MB. This in itself only is worth the upgrade and database rebuild!

I get the following on the task bar after closing Armory in all my W7 machines. I started noticing it since 0.93 (or perhaps even the one before that). The notification bubble fades and eventually disappears as expected but the Armory icon lingers and would only disappear with a mouse pointer hover. No biggie really but I guess I was hoping they'd go away in 0.94:

I get this message all the time since I started using Armory, about a year ago if I'm not mistaken, with every version released. I only need Chrome + bitcoind + Armory running to top up 2GB of RAM Wink You're most likely low on resources at the exact moment the error occurs. Armory reconnects right after (never seen it take more than a couple of minutes to reconnect).

Wasn't there news a few months ago saying the Bitcoin symbol was accepted for Unicode? Well, I guess here are the results. Pretty good. If euro, dollar, etc are there why no Bitcoin?

It was a member here I think who himself was going through a process to get it approved, I remember reading the thread but can't recall the username.

Ken Shirriff

The guy deserves an award just for proposing this Cheesy

This is still in the development stage guys and it will only be available to subscribers willing victims...
FTFY Cheesy

Open Source users of Bitcoin should support other open source IMO. That's the culture that created Bitcoin to begin with; Microsoft would never have created anything like it in a corporate culture.

https://libreoffice.org

not sure if they support the Bitcoin symbol yet, but that doesn't matter much when you could implement that yourself. Try doing that with MammonSoft products.

LibreOffice is great. But no, they don't have the Bitcoin symbol. Yet Wink
1173  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin could consume as much electricity as Denmark by 2020 on: March 30, 2016, 02:24:05 PM
The error is comparing Bitcoin to a centralized state issued currency... this is not the right comparative. You should compare how expensive mining gold is, compared to Bitcoin. Then you would see that not only Bitcoin is a better money in all aspects than gold, but its also way cheaper and environment friendlier.

Correct! Which reminds me about the amounts of paper needed to print fiat...
1174  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin thought experiment on: March 30, 2016, 02:17:13 PM
The blockchain isn't going back 3 months out of the blue... When forks happen they're quickly discarded. If you're not on the largest chain, you're losing out.
1175  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin could consume as much electricity as Denmark by 2020 on: March 30, 2016, 02:14:31 PM
So how much energy does regular banking consume, again? Yeah...

Still, Bitcoin is very energy expensive. But I don't think it will increase this expense much more as difficulty rises and chips are more efficient Cheesy
1176  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who creates there bitcoin wallet with real info? on: March 30, 2016, 07:03:08 AM
I think mostly no one does this, unless they are really required for exchanges like Coinbase, Bitstamp, Kraken, etc... I think nobody should do it unless they're aware of what they're doing and they're doing it on their free will.

Blockchain will never limit your account, even though you have lot of money out there by make some ilegall activity

What are you trying to say here? That seems to be a pretty serious allegation without any proof.

It's most likely a false positive. Did it find anything else?

Wasn't there news a few months ago saying the Bitcoin symbol was accepted for Unicode? Well, I guess here are the results. Pretty good. If euro, dollar, etc are there why no Bitcoin?

Something similar already exists and it is currently active on the forums. That being said, it would be an amazing tool for forum admins if it works just like what we have here on bitcointalk.

have you a link to where i can see more info about the other solution? or is it an internal tool for actual btt mods/admin your talking about?

There's no information regarding this bot for obvious reasons. You'd have to contact Mitchell but I doubt you'll be given any info.

That may be true, but the Bitcoin/bitcoin community needs a way to transact btc in a physical manner
(without phones/computers) that both parties don't know the private keys to.
In theory, the trust has been removed in this product (as long as private key generation is top notch).

For example, this device does what the Casascius Coins could have done,
but this time, the private keys are truly (or purportedly) unknown to anyone other then when it is spent.
With Casascius or other forms of physical btc, the private key is always known to someone.
If I gave someone a paper wallet, and they never swept it, I could have always taken it back.
With this device, that is not possible.

It may be somewhat expensive now and used by a small group of bitcoiners,
but the device and its use will pave the way for new ideas and innovations that adds to
Bitcoin/bitcoin's value and future potential.

As said before, I also think the blockchain is enough. Just get into the store, send Bitcoins from your phone or whatever and bring the goods.

Here's a "physical" thing that would be interesting: Some kind of Trezor like device with retina scanning and fingerprint scanning capabilities and POS terminals accepting these devices. The device has your keys secured, you insert it in the POS terminal and download address and payment information. You take it out, make it scan your retina, hold it for fingerprint scanning and it signs the keys and creates the transaction. When you connect it to the POS it broadcasts it immediately (that, or it broadcasts it right away from your phone). Either this or the devices generates a private key with the funds and "dumps" it immediately on the POS terminal.

One could argue a device like this could be expensive... Yes, but I prefer it like this: one time cost and multiple usage. I think that paying 8$ for something like this is a bigger premium than paying 200$ for something like what I described.

I understand your point and what you mean, but I still don't think it's worth it to order a few of these to regularly use them. I don't think this would bring people to Bitcoin and help it become something you spend daily. I wouldn't like to spend extra 8$ for having to pay for 50$ worth of groceries.

So every time you use one, you're wasting $8...

Yes... And to think people whine about 2 cents transaction fee Cheesy

Coinbase i think was the first Physical Bitcoin wallet

Casascius was the first.
