Does anybody know if there have been any "glitches" in the past year re: Monero, that would have allowed insiders to obtain XMR "off the books" as it were?  Thank you for any answers.  Wasn't able to get an answer yet in #Monero on #freenode.  I know that there was some incident in August/September 2014, but not sure on the details.

I think the only "glitch" has been the initial release of crippled mining software. It is assumed that the scammers were mining from the beginning with an optimized miner. I think this was fixed within the first couple of months. There is a blog post by David Anderson that described this problem.

There will always be a new, freedom-loving frontier. It's not America anymore. It's here. It's called the internet.

Space.  The Final Frontier.
Yeah, but no decent restaurants.

Just wait, there's one at the end of the universe.

See that is the problem.  People are mixing up their anti-government/anti-establishment sentiments with good science which has changed the world for the better.

if everyone is catalogued, monitored, evaluated by algorithms without their consent, watched for "anomalous behaviour", data-mined for increasing corporate profits and basically treated as a herd of chattels for State "tax farming" is the world really better? (albeit slightly healthier)

be careful of the utopia you wish for

This is exactly why Monero appeals to me. Without privacy, human freedom, dignity, and progress will die.

How long does it take to switch from buying a constant amount of XMR to spending a constant amount of BTC? In other words, after updating on the buymonero.net website, how long before the order is changed on Poloniex?
226  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Blowing the lid off the CryptoNote/Bytecoin scam (with the exception of Monero) on: April 13, 2015, 12:25:25 AM
It's amazing that they persist in investing so much time, energy, and money in these elaborate scams. Why not just buy Monero?  Undecided

I'd really prefer if donations for a project are held by a dev or someone of trust. I would send some coins over if this was done, Monero on a trezor would be great.

Edit: You might even be trustworthy, but I will wait till someone vouches for you seeing as you have a Newbie account.

Honestly, not a big fan of BitcoinTalk. I've been hanging around Monero IRC since I discovered it 2-3 weeks ago. Suggestion to cross-post this here actually came from there.

Anyway, feel free to Google me if that gives me some credibility in your eyes - same username everywhere (real life/irc/twitter/github/linkedin/...).

Would you mind tweeting something about Monero to confirm your identity?

Nevermind. Used "brew install bitmonero" instead.

That only works out on a bearish market. If the markets would be bullish, buying one chunk makes more sense. Just don't obtain that amount as the last one.

The whole point of the method, as far as I am concerned, is that it optimizes the average case under the assumption that you don't have an edge on bull/bear calls.

There are still pathologically pessimal cases, of course, but not under typical assumptions about the nature of a financial time-series.

231  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XMR] MoneroX - A cross platform graphical account manager for Monero on: April 08, 2015, 07:51:02 PM

Thanks for the report! This issue seems to be related to MoneroApi.Net's port checking mechanism, which fails to initialize a socket. Although I've specifically debugged and fixed an issue related to Mac OS X (v10.9 Mavericks) and added platform-dependent code, some issues still seem to be present.

What version of Mac OS X are you using? Did you install the latest version of the Mono .NET Framework? Thanks for providing feedback, your bug report is valuable!

EDIT: It also seems that there may be a DLL collision to the reference System.Net.Http, and in that case, I should add a binding redirection to the application. I'll definitely keep investigating about this.

"You all", "everyone", "they" (which can be singular or plural), etc.

I know people don't mind, but it is an affect of our male-dominant culture that should be made aware of, or in the case of the natives, an affect of an ignorant colonist culture.

OK, so maybe we are drifting a bit off-topic, but:

So, "you all" (also pronounced "y'all" where I come from) is the politically correct way to refer to a group of mixed-gender persons?

Yeah why not

It might offend the solipsists.

Have you allowed apps from outside sources? Doing that should fix that error you had.

Ok, I just changed the security settings. It had some effect, because I no longer get the error message when I double-click on MoneroX.app. Now I get a rainbow-colored spinning ball cursor for a few seconds, then nothing happens.

When I open package contents and right click Launcher.exec to open it I'm getting "There is no application set to open the document “Launcher.exec”.

Do you have Terminal as default application to open it?

If I open it with Terminal I get -

You shouldn't mess with opening package contents, but try opening the .app directly by double-clicking it! Also, make sure that you have the fixed version of v1.2.0 (re-download it if you're not sure).

I downloaded the new version and still get the same error when I try to open the MoneroX.app directly: "The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -67062.)"

When I go into the package and open Launcher.exec with Terminal, I was prompted to install the Mono Framework. But that didn't seem to make any difference. This is the error I get when I open Launcher.exec in Terminal:

Looks awesome, thanks for the contribution! Smiley

MoneroX v1.2.0 has been released!
Download it from GitHub!

  • Added support for the Mac OS X platform
(I'm aware that there are little layout issues, but from other aspects, the client should be fully functional)

  • Added text to the sync progress bar

Special thanks to ItzX and othe from #monero-dev for the help in testing Mac binaries!

Hi Jojatekok, on OSX 10.10.2 I get "The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -67062.)" when I try to open the binary.

Do what thou wilt, because either way you'll learn!

"At all times sincere friends of freedom have been rare, and its triumphs have been due to minorities, that have prevailed by associating themselves with auxiliaries whose objects often differed from their own; and this association, which is always dangerous, has been sometimes disastrous, by giving to opponents just grounds of opposition, and by kindling dispute over the spoils in the hour of success. No obstacle has been so constant, or so difficult to overcome, as uncertainty and confusion touching the nature of true liberty. If hostile interests have wrought much injury, false ideas have wrought still more; and its advance is recorded in the increase of knowledge, as much as in the improvement of laws."
Lord Acton, "The History of Freedom in Antiquity", 1877

Love is the law.

But if they instead generated a unique address(es) for each account, wouldn't that mean that there is no need to deal with payment IDs? I'm ignorant here.

Monero uses stealth addresses, automatically generating one-time use addresses behind the scenes. The equivalent of generating a unique address, without using a payment ID, would be generating a unique wallet for each Monero customer. It's much more elegant to use the payment ID.

Some publicity for SDC: http://motherboard.vice.com/read/the-race-for-the-first-decentralised-silk-road-is-on

Edit: I am puzzled at the lack of attention that Monero gets from the media, even those outlets that cover other privacy-oriented crypto-currencies.
