221  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Nothing-at-Stake & Long Range Attack on Proof-of-Stake (Consensus Research) on: March 26, 2015, 07:56:59 AM
Slides from my talk @ SF Bitcoin Devs Hackathon (titled "Proof-of-Stake and its Improvements") http://www.slideshare.net/AlexChepurnoy/proofofstake-its-improvements-san-francisco-bitcoin-devs-hackathon

Any good criticisms there?
222  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: March 25, 2015, 02:12:14 PM
there is (was) one great inherent flaw in the implementation of zerocash. I think the tech-savvy guys here can explain it properly. I am not even completely sure it is still worked on the project.

Wasn't it the fact that there is a master private key or something that could mint money at will or something? Thus the need for a 'signing ceremony' or something where all the Zerocash is created and then that key destroyed? I actually don't think that's too much of a problem if it's done right.
223  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: March 25, 2015, 01:44:26 PM
Can someone please explain about Zerocash, why it is a potential threath to Monero (currently considered the number one anon. coin by the most people on the forums)? Please, use layman's language...?
At least there are smart people in their team (prophessors). http://zerocash-project.org/about_us

So this is not launched yet?
What type of emission is planned for this?

The government involvement in this tells me that there is no damn way that this is anonymous.

Holy shit. I knew there were a lot of good academic minds behind Zerocash, but that list of funders is insane. I wonder what the context of this funding is. Whether these are just general research grants or specific funding for the Zerocash project.

Also, just because the US government funds a project doesn't automatically mean that it's going to be compromised. DARPA specifically is pretty general in terms of what they'll support. They did give us the internet after all.

224  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [DRK/XDN/XMR/SDC] Comparison between the most known anonymous coins (MUST READ) on: March 24, 2015, 05:17:20 PM
NOTE: I'm not claiming it will go 100x or even 10x, I'm just saying that if DRK/DASH is going to get the attention of the NSA or similar it won't be until it is 100x at least.

I think all it would take is a significant amount of dark market usage. Or even worse, some perception that it's being used to fund enemy organizations(terrorists or whatever).

The thing is too that people probably underestimate how governments could affect even Bitcoin if they wanted to. If the Chinese government wanted to shut down those massive mining farms they easily could with little excuse. Same for pretty much any country. So it's a potential problem for everyone. I'm actually surprised no cryptocurrency opponent has come out with rhetoric about how miners are 'processing' dark market transactions, and use that to put pressure on them. I guess it's probably similar to how running a Tor node is though legally.
225  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: List of Alt Coins Backed By A Business on: March 23, 2015, 08:36:20 PM
People should be using digital tokens for businesses. Not creating fresh cryptocurrencies from nothing. It's quite silly for them to do so when there are already platforms like NXT and Counterparty which can be used for this exact purpose.

Poloniex is still frozen. Anybody know why.

Keep up the good work devs. Waiting for the next update

Getting everything sorted now and everyone on the same chain. Should be unfrozen pretty soon once Poloniex gets the all clear.

I got delayed a bit, but I should have a pool and will have a block explorer on the correct chain sometime this friday. The server is built, it's just a matter of testing and configuring Cheesy

On a semi-related note, the current network for this coin is not very big. This is not that weird, except it's a scrypt coin, and they make asics for that Cheesy But it presents something of an opportunity, and it could be helpful to the network as well if as many of you as can spare the CPU cycles set gen=1 in your config file. (or setgenerate true in your console). The chances at this network speed of you breaking a block are not huge, but they are not impossible like some coins. I think it's worth a shot, and will be doing it with my personal wallet.

for reference, my gamecredits.conf looks like this:

daemon=1
server=1
listen=1
gen=1
rpcuser=thatcrazybiomechguy
rpcpassword=isnotcrazyenoughtoposttealcredentials

What does the hashrate look like now? I remember last time I look I think it was around 4 GH, but that was when there was more volume. Once things get going again soon I'd expect that lots of miners will join the network again to raise the hashrate.
230  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: list of coins with web browser wallet on: March 19, 2015, 07:53:23 PM
Anything on SuperNET will have an HTML5 wallet ready to go eventually. There's already a handful of currencies functioning in the wallet already I think.
231  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [DRK/XDN/XMR/SDC] Comparison between the most known anonymous coins (MUST READ) on: March 19, 2015, 03:40:11 PM

Sorry, but with current state of Boolberry (not even in top 100 marketcap - no development since months) and the few differences with XMR or XDN, it doesn't seem to be useful to put Boolberry in the comparison

Unlinkable transaction upgrade to CryptoNote and blockchain bloat reduction are probably the two biggest upgrades to any CryptoNote currency so far. XMR has probably done a bunch of stuff too but I can't think of a specific thing off the top of my head that could be more important than those two upgrades. XMR devs plan to do their own versions of these upgrades down the line, but they have a lot on their plate so I wouldn't expect them anytime soon.

CryptoZoidberg is still around. He's done a lot of work and it's a bit silly that you would dismiss that and have the balls to put Ducknote above BBR in relevance.
232  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [GMC]▬►► GamersCoin | For Gaming and more| Poloniex| Bittrex ◄◄▬ on: March 19, 2015, 01:59:45 PM
And its frozen now at Poloniex  Embarrassed

Yes, that's because I notified them about the potential issue. It's much better that we get this sorted out properly first than have to try deal with it later.

It could just be one of the block explorers messing up or something. I'm not sure. I'm guessing though that it might have something to do with the update though. Maybe everyone who knows people mining GMC should reach out to them and make sure everyone is mining on the same chain and are fully updated and such.
233  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Bitmark on: March 19, 2015, 07:19:48 AM
Hey guys,

Will there be a hard fork for implementing the difficulty change algorithm? I have most of my coins in my wallet dormant, so i need to know whether I should be paying attention to the changes or not. Because i don't plan to sell in the near future.

Thanks! Cheesy

There's no hard fork scheduled right now, no. But lots of work has been done by dbkeys, leathan, emdje, ecucoin and mark in testing alternative algos. So if he community decides we need to hard fork we should be able to implement some of the new ideas. (edit: Sometime in the future though, not in the short term for sure. A few things need to be worked out first. The important thing is that we have options for the future if it's deemed necessary.)

We will make sure to give lots of notice if we're going to hard fork.
234  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Best Urban Dictionary entry for "Dash" on: March 18, 2015, 09:12:34 PM
This rebranding to Dash seems to have happened quite suddenly. I wonder how many different names they went through before settling on Dash.

Naming a cryptocurrency isn't an easy task though. Many different things to consider. Lots of different attributes you want to impart in the name. Also lots of implications you need to avoid.

These definitions are pretty hilarious though. Sounds like there are definitely going to be parts of the world where asking someone if they take Dash is going to either make them laugh or maybe want to punch you in the face! Cheesy Tongue

Not sure how I feel about Dash as a name. Sounds alright I guess if you don't already define it as one of these poll options Cheesy. I remember Dashcoin. Dash is better than Dashcoin imo.

I'm guessing this one(http://gamers-coin.org:2750/) in particular is out of date since last block says "2015-03-08 13:56:54 "

As to which of the other two is the correct one, I'm not sure exactly. Which one are the miners/pools on as well as Poloniex? I know there are a few miners here. I can see if I can ask someone at Poloniex.

This is a good coin, how's the status now? Still alive?

Still alive yeah. Re-branding to GameCredits and projects to integrate GMC for game payments going on now.

Dev still around?  There are two block explorers on completely different chains.  Which one is the correct one?   Look like there was an update but no notification of it....

thanks
richie@bittrex

Should be someone around to fix it. There are a few people who should be able to clear this up if DrBob doesn't get to it first. I'll see if I can notify the right people.
238  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [GMC]▬►► GamersCoin | For Gaming and more| Poloniex| Bittrex ◄◄▬ on: March 16, 2015, 03:59:26 PM
so here GMC can be spent :
https://cryptocloudhosting.org/blog/

any other sites ?

I'm working on getting GMC integrated in to mobile games.

After basic integration with the Game Payments Platform we'll focus on getting a fiat gateway created that people can use to purchase crypto.

Lots of people are already familiar with in-game credits now since mobile games are so popular. So it shouldn't be much of a stretch to introduce people to cryptocurrency since it can behave in a similar way in games. And GMC should be well positioned to take advantage of that since its primary focus will be on gaming.
239  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Your favorite CryptoNote coin? on: March 16, 2015, 12:30:25 PM
So 32 votes so far and it seems that Monero is way ahead. Actually I was expecting to see Monero at number 1 so no surprises there. However, the size of the gap between first and second place is surprising.

I was wondering why Boolberry's market cap was so low the other day. The coin has jl777 behind it and is an integral part of SuperNET but the market cap is less than the price of a used Audi. Grin

Interesting to see no votes for Bytecoin too. Traditionally it was Monero's biggest rival.

BBR has no active development at the moment.

CZ is still around though. CZ has been working on Louis D'Or a lot recently, but it's not like he's abandoned BBR at all.

240  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: March 16, 2015, 12:13:21 PM

Sounds like SuperNET to me. Especially the API thing and being able to run on any type of currency.

I'm not so sure, isn't SuperNET using the various coins as features apart of the network? For example BBR will be the anonymous layer, etc...

I am not advocating that at all, I'm advocating for a truly coin agnostic platform that only uses Crypto Currencies as a method of barter/payment and nothing more.

Something that allows people to spend any crypto anywhere that accepts crypto as payment?
