I do think with mining investment you can recoup most of your mining costs be reselling the hardware if you decide its not for you. Additionally you can trade the coin once you have mined it and use those profits to essentially do the same trading you would have done with the money.....

I have the charts on live in my office at work and monitor it on my phone throughout the day.

Even if difficulty is 4 or 5 times what it is now you will probably still make money from your ASIC it just will be not very much money. Definitely not the amount you plugged into the calculator.
