Initial pre-release from Sunnyking: (can be found here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=245953.0)
Quote
I am happy to announce that the primecoin project is now close to beta quality and will be released to public soon. Please keep in mind this is experimental technology and we reserve the rights to rollback or restart the blockchain should severe bug/vulnerability require such actions. However we would try our best to avoid such scenarios and further develop it into reliable public infrastructure.

Introducing primecoin

First non-hashcash proof-of-work in cryptocurrency, pure prime number based proof-of-work
Cpu mining at launch, gpu mining to be developed by market participants
Pure proof-of-work, no proof-of-stake (unlike ppcoin), not energy efficient, but with additional potential scientific value derived from proof-of-work energy consumption (energy multiuse)
Scarcity enforced by Moore's Law similar to ppcoin, mint rate gradually drops as difficulty rises, without sudden halving shock
Security model similar to bitcoin
Continuous difficulty adjustment like ppcoin
Reasonably high starting difficulty to limit instamining
1 minute target block spacing
Zero premine, zero tax

ppcoin + primecoin

Sharing the same goal of real innovations, moving cryptocurrency technology forward and demonstrating our technical capabilities
Sharing the same value, open source, no premine, no tax, advancing cryptocurrency technology for humanity
Cpu mining initially for primecoin to cater to a larger mining community, now covering all mining hardwares with both ppcoin (gpu+fpga+asic) and primecoin (cpu)
New innovations in primecoin catering to a wider audience including the mathematical and other scientific computing community, and users who prefer pure proof-of-work cryptocurrencies.
Sharing development resources and infrastructures
Different innovative cryptocurrency designs provide cryptocurrency investors with diversified advanced technology portfolio
Strategic positioning for the next 5 years in cryptocurrency market

ppcoin vs primecoin

ppcoin is our first innovative cryptocurrency design to focus on energy efficiency. Almost a year after its release ppcoin's design remains the only proof-of-stake design on the market, with seven forks/clones (NVC, BTB, YAC, BTG, BOT, CGB, YAB). primecoin is our second innovative design to focus on alternative proof-of-work system producing additional scientific values. The two networks would work in synergy to achieve our long-term cryptocurrency strategy.
Cryptocurrency market has now split into two sectors, energy intensive sector and energy efficient sector. In the longer term (5+ years) I believe the energy efficient sector would begin to challenge the energy intensive sector due to its cost advantage. In the shorter term though energy intensive market would likely remain dominant and we would like to have an innovative and competitive offering in this sector as well. The innovations in primecoin give us this opportunity, and would complement ppcoin to strengthen our strategic position in the market.
The energy intensive sector currently has two major types of proof-of-work, both of the hashcash type, one is SHA-256, the other is scrypt. There have been some new variations of the hash functions recently, with modified scrypt and SHA-3 series hash functions as well, or even compositions of different hash functions. Though existing cryptocurrencies are all still based on hashcash proof-of-work. primecoin introduces the first non-hashcash proof-of-work in cryptocurrency, the first type of proof-of-work that not only secures the block chain, but also provides additional potential scientific value, paving the way for future proof-of-work types with more diverse scientific interests and uses.
Both ppcoin and primecoin demonstrate our design prowess and capability in real innovations. We are fully dedicated to provide long term support and further development to both cryptocurrencies.
For existing ppcoin users our dedication to the continued development of ppcoin and its market has not changed. ppcoin's advanced proof-of-stake technology has long-term advantage over pure proof-of-work designs, and is an innovative environmental-friendly solution to the escalating energy consumption on cryptocurrency. In my opinion the energy intensive sector will fragment into many different types of proof-of-work, a single type of proof-of-work is unlikely to maintain dominance. More fragmentation is likely even within a single type of proof-of-work. Meanwhile the energy efficient sector would rise to challege the energy intensive sector, and ppcoin is among the leading contenders in the energy efficient sector. So in terms of our long term strategy ppcoin is of more importance than primecoin.

Release Schedule

CAP seems a little under-priced atm considering the fork problem is pretty much over.

give it a moment to settle out and I am sure it will start to rise..err at least I hope!
Yeah, I have been sitting there snapping up all the little sell orders from the dumb miners that are too cheap Smiley

1388  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Multipool and Middlecoin - big profit, even bigger troubles... on: July 29, 2013, 12:30:11 AM
If you want the price of a coin to go UP, you need to give people something to do with the coin other than dump it for BTC.
True, but I think the discussion here is to protect the coin against issue (e.g. bearish pressure) coming from its own mining process. Finding ways to make the coin go UP on the market is a whole other subject.

Ensuring profits for speculators is not a miner or pool operator's priority and really should not enter into our concerns in any way.
Who will keep buying a given coin in large quantity if speculators have no room left to operate?

Please don't kill the goose  Wink

I understand most are not to be concern about this on short term. I just hope a coin developer is observing and willing to try to experiment about this. It might make a difference on long term.

We only mine coins that people are willing to buy.  If people stop wanting to buy a coin its value and profitability will go down and we won't mine it anymore.  See PXC.

Right now there are many competing coins and many speculators who want to diversify into them.  The cream will rise to the top, the dregs will fall to the bottom, just like any free market system.

The CAP fork seems to be a perfect storm scenario starting with the bottlecaps pool having to much hashrate then suddenly hanging up stopping 90% of the miners on CAPs most didn't know for quite a bit. Then around the same time frame multipool coming online with CAPs and then throwing a massive Sh*t ton of new miners at it some 760MH's at one point I'm told. All the while this is happening as the first Proof of Stake blocks started to be minted so who knows what that threw into the mix. And folks with bad peers and un-upgraded wallets never help.

I know the bottlecaps devs are working on it and I'm told a new release should be out very soon. As far as which chain yes someone will lose coin from the chain they were mining on or trading on its an unfortunate thing its not the first time and definitely wont be the last time. Best course for these scenarios is know what it is your mining understand what it is your trading and pay attention to events that take place folks noticed a possible fork a bit back. Continuing to mine a forked chain is well a risk probably 50-50. I don't blame the multipools and I think some of the ideas on how to prevent coins from these sorts of things are what all these altcoins are about a grand experiment to figure out what combination, features additions work best.
1389  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: *Updated* Bottlecaps NEW v1.3 [CAP]| No Premine | 0.25 Start Diff |Proof Stake on: July 28, 2013, 01:23:10 AM
I performed a clean install of this client v1.3 for Windows. I needed to manually add nodes to begin synching, but once completed, get the error message, "WARNING: Checkpoint is too old. Contact the development team."

I had the same problem. One of the added nodes was the cause of that problem. The problem node has been deleted from the original post and the following currently works:

addnode=186.95.162.209
addnode=70.79.24.157
addnode=70.98.114.229
addnode=188.165.211.65
addnode=199.192.205.46
addnode=176.34.210.88
addnode=70.69.238.84
addnode=70.98.114.237

Good to know. I was not at my pc to verify.

It looks like the node removed was:
addnode=69.85.86.195

I removed this from the .conf file, restarted the client, but the error message was still there. I'll wait for the next version. Everything else seems to work well.

I deleted all except for the wallet and my .conf file (c/w with the revised addnodes) and re-downloaded the blockchain to correct the problem. I was able to re-create the problem on several different computers and cure it.

Okay, I deleted all files except wallet and conf and downloaded the entire blockchain again. I can assure you the problem is still there. I verified again that every ip in addnode is correct. If a new client is released and this is mentioned as a fix and some people still have problems, it's not gonna look good.  Running on Windows XP, virtual mode on Win7, client v1.3.

The only other thing I can think of is that I downloaded the associated dll's from one link, but since the client was not there, I downloaded that from the other link. I don't know if the issue could be in the DLL's, but in that case the update should probably be fine.

I got the same problem, couldn't sync the blockchain with the CAP client, got same WARNING in the bottom left box, followed directions by removing blockchain and redownloading it. Alas, now the CAPs in the wallet are showing unconfirmed, and the same WARNING persists. The next step is to notify the developers, it says. So there.

Ditto.  Just downloaded 1.3 (verified the version after the install) today for the first time (fresh install) on win8pro-64, copied the addnode list on the OP into the .conf file (matches the one quoted above) and still I get ring around the collar, er, the blockchain warning.  An issue with 1.3?

Dev should have a new update very soon he got delayed should be no issues with 1.3
1390  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][Exchange] Latest Cryptsy Additions, News and announcements on: July 27, 2013, 01:37:23 AM
You know how people ask you to put coins on the exchange?  Well, I'm going to do the opposite.

Please do NOT add Gascoin, Spots, Cryptobits, and Cloudcoin.

Gascoin is ecologically irresponsible, as the orphan rate because of four second block times will be absurd.  The electricity wasted and thus its contribution to all-things-global-warming will be substantial.  It's an argument Cryptsy cannot win if they tried to justify accepting Gascoin.  FST, WDC, and DGC already push the limit...

Because the dev of Spots is the same as Gascoin, and since Spots has a sizeable premine/dev tax, I refuse to support Spots by default.  Bad reputation should stand for something and we should draw the line by not accepting these criminal losers as part of the cryptocoin community.

Cryptobit was announced in a truly shady manner.  They were announced on a dead forum then, by mere chance or collaboration, someone not part of the dev team decided to post a announcement thread in this forum.  And when the point is brought up about their strategic use of a dead forum to instamine/premine their own coin, the devs of CYB feign ignorance.  This type of shady behavior should be punished.

Another coin I won't support is Cloudcoin.  Date was scheduled and devs decided to secretly launch much earlier, essentially creating an instamine situation for themselves.  A quick look at cryptometer.org shows well over 90% of all coins currently in existence was mined in the first two hours. Moreover, the dev of Cloudcoin (ahmed_bodi) has some morally questionable beliefs:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=255361.msg2725066#msg2725066

I commend Cryptsy for having the guts to adopt altcoins, and I'm happy for their growth.  But there needs to be a line drawn so that criminals and bad practices are punished instead of being rewarded.

-Merc

I think there is merit in what you say. We have started to consider premines way more heavily into the coin research we do. Essentially fair release coins will move up the list way faster than the others. I wouldn't go so far as to say its criminal but bounties are not a real factor in the coin consideration criteria. If folks want to do a bounty I think they should be in another currency since it shows the community that they have at least put a little money where there mouth is and may stick around a while. Since the alt boom there are way more fair release alts floating out there now. Can I say none will make it no I can't but most of the ones you listed are not ranked very high on the list and will tend towards the bottom as more fair release coins are out there.

Is anyone else having difficulty with payouts from www.bottlecapspool.com?
I should have had 5 payouts from the site, but only 2 are actually showing up on the blockchain:

It appears that the bottom two went through without any issues, but the top three are MIA.

I didn't have any issues with payouts from that pool, but stopped mining there yesterday. My results there were horrendous. I started tracking the results per hour and was getting about 68% of the coins I should have been receiving according to their stats.

I just tried to login to the pool now to double check my transaction history, but the site seems down. I've had no problem with any transactions going through from any point to point anywhere on the network, and confirmations are really fast. Everything has been flawless for me concerning transactions.

BigVern's Wallet for bottlecaps pool got corrupted should be fixed now. The weird blip was due to 90% of the hashrate popping off at one time. Lets spread the wealth to some of the other pools as well. Silverwolf, Eurdook, Multipool all run some great stuff try em out.
1392  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: *Updated* Bottlecaps NEW v1.3 [CAP]| No Premine | 0.25 Start Diff |Proof Stake on: July 26, 2013, 09:21:16 PM
Hey  I have to say the transaction may have gone though ....

I'm blowing my own whistle here guys but Nibble is about the release one of the most stable clients currently out there

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=216637.0

Team digitalindustry nearly took Nibble PoS , I'm glad we did not bloat the client and , we are using an ultra low fee structure .

Feel free to come download have a look , we intend to show you how effective management can provide security and all that the end user wants .

A rising price and security , PoS provides no security against someone with no "stake motive" , the biggest threat to an active Cryptocurrency team is not stakeholders , but  Government agencies of course , that work directly for commercial fiat banking interests ,  none of this is addressed by PoS , and look at the fee structure , and client bloat ?

The user wants a Secure cryptocurrency with an efficient client , low fees , that is now/soon Nibble .

The time to be fixing this stuff is now, when if attacked we can roll back the BC , we know any attacker now  has not " stake motive " .

Proof of stake is a bonus in defending the currency there was no attack on bottlecaps. Not sure why your posting nibble in other coin threads. Proof of Stake is the safest bet for any alt. The other big question it answers is what happens when all the coins are mined.....On that note Bitcoin will not have the issue as I believe the fees would support it as the tech to mine Bitcoin will improve and the money behind it will keep it going probably true with a couple other PoW coins as well. But for smaller alts proof of stake is the way to go. How does Nibble answer this question? How is Nibble more secure?
