2281  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: September 04, 2014, 09:31:25 PM
Just made my first ever XMR purchase - 5 minutes of XMR dev time for attack mitigation and security.

Thanks, devs!!

This kind of post is such good news.  Today made the coin, and community, incalculably stronger :-)

Well, I also just made my first purchase, but they are locked on BTER because I can't withdraw.
Very good first impression!

(1) Don't buy XMR on BTER, and
Too late, I just deposit some satoshis, did a market buy monero and went for withdrawal, basically a hit and run.

Can someone advise me on a place where I can do a hit and run which actually works? I don't want to have them locked up somewhere online.

Poloniex has worked great for me.

Well, Peter Todd was right.  It's politically incorrect, but he's not known for tact and charm.  He's known for creative technical solutions.

And frankly, if IBM were doing its accounting with crayons and monkeys, and you didn't inform the stakeholders, you'd be very irresponsible.

I am curious if the cryptonote code base is intentionally done with crayons and monkeys. What is to be gained from this?
Simple things like their reference code didnt compile for me. Now I am always having problems getting all the modules installed, but I would think a supposed reference code should compile. So if it doesnt compile, then what other problems are there?

Didnt make sense to me and I didnt have time to investigate

James

It is a bit of a bastard to get up and running in my experience. also hi james. unexpected to see you over here.

When handling or applying any pressure at all on the Trezor's case, I hear lots of creaking/sticky plastic noises.  I tried this on someone else's Trezor and did not notice this. Is this normal?

I have noticed nothing like this myself.
2285  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Please support OpenBazaar on: September 02, 2014, 07:17:27 PM
To revive an old thread, since we're getting closer to a beta for OpenBazaar, I want to jump in and say that the questions about trust and anonymity are very real and challenging, so thank you for posing them.

In our preliminary documentation on the matter, A pseudonymous trust system for a decentralized anonymous marketplace, we attempt to address some of these issues to preserve both anonymity and establish trust towards pseudonymous identities. Feedback is always welcome.

You ought to use a hybrid of WOT and a nash equilibrium strategy of mutually assured destruction through mutually risked funds. http://nashx.com/HowItWorks

The WOT give you protection from situations where there is a large discrepancy in the value applied to money its self by each party, and so the party that values the money less highly can extort the other party by legitimately threatening to destroy both parties risked funds. Its not a particularly threatening attack vector that would only work in very niche cases, but the addition of WOT would bring the likelihood of its occurrence down to almost zero.

The combination of these should be sufficient to create a very reliable totally distributed system of accountability even in within the framework of a totally anonymous system.
2286  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [ESHOP launched] Trezor: Bitcoin hardware wallet on: September 01, 2014, 08:18:28 PM
Will there be a version with metal casing anytime soon? Great product, anyway!

I want to know the same thing, silver, gold, white glass, other? Just not white plastic, and it would be nice if it was in time from Christmas, then it could be one of my gifts

  Grin
I don't care if they are disposable and made from recycled cardboard. I want to see someone make these cheap.

In time it will come. The hardware is already cheap. On my receipt it said like 15 or 20 dollars for the trezor and 90 or 95 dollars (or something similar) for "security services". I think its fair. I do hope however hope that they will gradually start lowering the prices. Some people like myself were excited enough about this project to spend >100 dollars and they captured people like me. I paid it. But there are many people out there who are excited but not >100 dollars excited. If they start lowering their prices maybe 10 or 20 dollars at a time, they will be able to capture the people who are excited but not as excited as me. Once they saturate the market for people who are willing to pay >100 dollars they will find themselves in the situation of choosing between no profit or less profit. I'm sure they will chose the latter.

This is my first post here, but I am not a "troll".  I am a significant holder, accumulating over the last months, and you can tell by my twitter @indiemaps that I have supported Monero in the past.  But I can't see how anybody can trust the socialist devs of this project after the revelations of the past few days.  I will not dump b/c I believe there is more BTC to be made off this flavor of the season coin.  But I have certainly lost my trust and faith in the coin and team.

The developers claim to want to separate the monetary system from the government, yet David Latapie also believes in socialist education, redistributionist schemes, and forced/violent taxation.  How this is compatible with an anonymous cryptocurrency is beyond me.

I and I hope all the other anarchists who have supported this coin in the past need to move on....to a coin with nonviolent developers who do not wish to force their views of society on us.
How could you possibly mandate that all developers of an open source project conform to a certain set of political views?

I think he's just mandating that they not be extreme statists.

How many devs are there? How many of them are socialists? What specifically are the socialists working on? What harm do you suppose would be caused by a socialist developing the code? Do you expect that he will sabotage it so that governments can persecute its users?

Im willing to entertain your argument but we will certainly need more argument on specifically what harm you think this will cause.
2289  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: September 01, 2014, 01:54:56 AM

Until we run into a situation where the demand for space in the blockchain exceeds the supply of space in the blockchain there will be little to no need for 2 almost identical monies. Money is very very strongly effected by network effects and its very inefficient to use 2 monies that are very similar to each other if it is not necessary. Either bbr or nxt will be the cryptonote platform, people arnt going to use both for no reason, there are good reasons to expect that monero will be the winner because it has strong network effects compared to bbr.

Anarchists support Monero.

This one definitely does. Smiley

Many people are using it not only anarchists. I hope many people around the world will be using it everyday

If we could just get all of the anarchists to use it, that would be a pretty good start.

Only altcoin exchanges we are missing right now is btc38 and cryptsy, we should get monero added to that! Spoke to fluffypony also on IRC and the GUI wallet is taking some time because the lack of funds.. If more funds would be donated they could hire skilled developers to speed up the work.

I still have 100 monero pledged for as soon as they get the database completed. I only have 2 gigs of ram on here and i dont want to deal with trying to run it on the hard drive Cheesy

Really? Sell the 100 XMR and upgrade your hardware.  It's a thought. Smiley

Cant be upgraded. There is no expansion slot. 2 gb of ram should be plenty for this sort of application. its not a cutting edge video game. Tongue I'll just wait.

Any conjecture as to the reason for the dumping?

So how about monero lately. Glad to see the price starting to rise. Still so much more to go Grin

100$ with 6 months. Against that time BTC will be 1500/2000$

We need to have a 100 dollar party if that happens. Like the bitcoin 1000 dollar party.

Not recommended... We planned a Bitcoin $100 party too, but by the time it was arranged, it was a $200 party. These things are always a jinx (ring a bell at the top)

...Noone wanted to do it all over again later in the year, so it became $1000 party and look what happened.

Well im having a 100 dollar party with or without you guys Cheesy.

Wow i knew your government was crazy but that's a special kind of crazy. Next they will be forbidding you to interbreed with people with the wrong skin color. Gotta preserve that french heritage. Cheesy

We can't see movie not translated in French, media have a number of French subsided "art" to diffuse, my government plan to prevent netflix from coming here. English class is with funny teacher to do nothing or speak about American history in French. Even in Paris nothing is write in English in the street...

And the more funny is the government funded agency that translate "e mail" to "courriel" or "hash tag" to "mot dièse" even if nobody use their fucking word.

And your far leftist or rightist say that English language is some imperialist conspiracy...

that is fascinating. i had no idea about any of this. thanks for teaching me a little bit about your culture.

Hey i dont even speak a second language. So dont feel bad.

I feel bad as many French, we have more difficulty to learn English cause many law prevent anything in English to come here to protect French...

1.I requires a long-term vision to put them in place and I can't believe a free market would create them.

2.It would create a road and plumbery for this very building and the next one and it would be done in a ad'hoc way,

3.resulting in a lot of incompatibilities and kludges and thus loss of efficiency.

4.Central planning has its merit.

1.Heavily capitalistic capitalized companies have long term plans, like mining companies. Did you know that the American railway company (in the time of the "wild west") was the biggest capitalization most capitalized of on the American exchange? The Free market can build very big (large would sound more natural but big is acceptable) infrastructure.

2.It would improve the way we build road cause there will be concurrence and different price, we don't need first class road everywhere but companies need them to move their product.

3.If government don't didn't decide what is the language, would everyone will speak a different language and nobody will understand each other ? No, free market can do standardization where we need it (it is needed would be better than where we need). Did you know that big hardware companyies meet to decide what is HDMI, USB, WIFI, ect ?

4.In army yes, everywhere no.

ill give you a free lesson.
